he understands. talking about herself must feel trite at her level of infamy in the organization. she's an underboss — he imagines she's given this pitch a thousand times over. but if she doesn't want to talk about what they are meant to talk about, then he will force them through the monotony of interview-level questions until the hour passes.[break][break]on his paper, if she can abstract meaning from a doctor's penmanship, is information as mundane as the conversation. her name, the time session began, notes on her posture and that she says she's "quite fine" following her kidnapping. [break][break]"i see. you have quite the storied career."[break][break]the compliment comes out a bit flat. he pockets the topic of two avatarships for later, but the rest is just a recitation of her file, each word carefully curated to give him the correct answer. Elisabeth Fiorelli can "win" this session if she wants — it's money in his pocket whether he helps her or not — but it will come after the slow, pyrrhic march of time. [break][break]THEO BECKETT speaks up, cutting through quiet, somber status quo. he doesn't look at him, doesn't need to — instead, he watches the faces of others in the room, gauging their reaction to his speech.[break][break]in the end, he inclines his head in approval of the underboss's words. there will be many more deaths, and war will make the convention of a private funeral a luxury.

marcus' knowledge of Elisabeth Fiorelli is superficial. she's an underboss and an avatar — and someone he pictures in his mind to be more like @cillian than THEO BECKETT on those factors alone. he's read reports, heard things offhand, but mostly she has remained an enigmatic superior. [break][break]he's curious, now, to see who she really is. [break][break]they finally meet in team rocket's headquarters (after some noticeable scheduling difficuly) under the duress of a mandatory appointment. he looks across his desk at her, observing her body language. she's sitting stiff and still in her chair, like she hopes she might become invisible for the next hour. [break][break]her words mirror a similar discomfort. she had been kidnapped — surely that is something worth commenting on. but he recognizes some people need time to open up, so he just nods and writes it down on his notepad. [break][break]"that is excellent to hear, underboss fiorelli," he says, his words drawn out by the distraction of writing. "unfortunately, we have another ... "[break][break]he twists his wrist to look at his watch. [break][break]"fifty-nine minutes of this session left."[break][break]he looks at her. [break][break]"we could sit in silence for the duration, certainly, but i find that talking passes the time much quicker." he shrugs, breaking up the formality with a casual gesture. marcus smiles disarmingly, sensing the there-and-gone tension that flits through the underboss. the hierarchy has shifted since Cillian Quinn left kanto, but he can tell that he's grown in their time apart. though he may want for the days where their roles were reversed, he does feel a twinge of pride to see kanto rockets taking footholds within hoenn's branch. [break][break]Cillian Quinn. THEO BECKETT. jayden cross. [break][break]his own life is made easier here by association. [break][break]"i have been," he says, dipping his head with acknowledgement. "though it has certainly been an adjustment coming here."[break][break]marcus doesn't think he needs to elaborate. cillian, in all his experience, must know how abnormal this region is. he can deal with fighting the league or civilians despising him, but he finds himself feeling like the sky is about to fall every time a new problem in hoenn crops up.[break][break]he punctuates the confession with a laugh, short and polite, and then his attention turns to the underboss. [break][break]"underboss quinn," comes his typical greeting. the man in front of him is another face from his past, catapulted into a position of power after leaving kanto. "it's been some time, hasn't it?"

[break][break]"it looks like it healed well enough." within a medical tent in the thick of wartime, there's no guarantee that an injury will heal as well as it could've in a less hectic and better supplied environment — but it doesn't look bad, not at all. "and she didn't end up giving you rabies, i see."[break][break] there's a hint of mirth to the observation, but it passes as congratulations are given. he studies his body language for a moment, wondering what might be concealed beneath his poise, and then begins. [break][break] "when you encountered your patron, did you experience anything unusual?" as he speaks, he thinks of mint frost, terrorized by a gauntlet of illusions. "hallucinations? voices?"
