Variety is the spice of life.[break]

That’s what Lavinia tells herself each time she picks up another hobby. She can support them, no sweat–so what’s the harm in trying them out? The victimized hobby this week? Photography. Her cell has a decent enough camera, and she’s read up on f-stops and apertures and depth of field and all that. Whether she remembers all of it is a different story.[break]

It’s a happy coincidence that there’s a bulletin seeking out amateur photographers’ work around the same time. Vinnie’s more than happy to contribute. Adventure calls! She heeds it by hopping on the train and heading for the outdoors. Fortree’s outskirts, to be specific. What makes a better backdrop than the overflowing flora and fauna of route 119?[break]

She’s not the only one out today, not even the only one with camera in hand. Though, the stranger she spots seems much more prepared and sure of himself than she is. After a few lackluster shots, Lavinia works up the nerve to approach said stranger. “Pardon me!” She says. “Y’seem pretty good with that thing.” Lavinia points to his device with a grin. “Have any tips or tricks y’could spare for an amateur?”[break]

“Lavinia.” A name for a name. “But y’can just call me Vinnie!” That’s less of a mouthful and much more fun! Lavinia finds her full name superfluous, a reminder of where she’s been–of how she’s been. Nice and complacent and well-groomed enough to get by. A woman expected to skip the messy unpredictability of young adulthood.[break]

Well, screw that! Lavinia blew the nest and gave herself a new name to boot. If she’s not allowed to be messy and curious in Lilycove, then she’ll be messy and curious outside of it.[break]

She makes a sound of quiet awe as Navy describes his preferred ways to rumble. “Yer a proper trainer, then?” Bartenders are listeners by trade, and Lavinia’s no exception. When you have regulars, it’s easy to forget who you’ve told what. It becomes much easier to get strangers to talk about themselves. Seems to be a crowd-pleaser as well.[break]

Lavinia’s all for sharing when asked, but otherwise she tends to keep her mouth shut about herself on the clock. “By trade! Not always workin’ the Faire, of course.” It’d be hard to count on a seasonal activity for a steady income. “Usually, I’m in Slateport. Work at a cafe during the day, too!” She has to pay the bills somehow![break]

“Ah, but enough about me!” Lavinia says with a dismissive wave of her hand. “What’s yer trade, Navy?”[break]

The woman’s words are a stark contrast to the former noise. They’re poised, refined, and succinct. Lavinia, half expecting that she would be chastised for letting her Pokemon wander, blinks blankly a few times. “Yes, yeah, he’s watchin’!” Lillipup had always liked watching the mermaid shows, though now it seems his attention is locked on the woman’s Mismagius–deeming her more interesting than the Pokemon stuck inside the exhibit.[break]

“I take it yer Pokemon’s watchin’ too?” Lavinia takes a moment to come up with a suitable compliment to mirror the one levied at her Lillipup. “She’s real graceful!” All the draping ghostly appendages give off the same air of distinguishment that the lady herself gives. “Y’from around here?” Lavinia asks.[break]

The Perrserker doesn’t need to make any moves to prove frightening. Lavinia’s Rattata comes crawling straight back up her arm, hiding itself behind her head and into her hair–only leaving its snout and little red eyes peeking out. The rodent gives a furious glare, but the trembling and cowering certainly don’t portray him as threatening.[break]

Lavinia turns her head just enough to aim a laugh at her Rattata before facing the customer once more. It’s hard to read facial expressions through that mask but his tone seems pleasant enough. “Your authority is correct!” One moment fiddling behind the bar is all it takes to fish out a bottle of the specified mead brand. “Comin’ right up!” And one more moment is all it takes to fill up the ornate mug on the counter.[break]

Lavinia slides it forward, watching the liquid inside ripple against the edges of the container. “Can’t say I have.” Her station happens to be a little far from the main action. “I’ve been seein’ some of the knights after, though! All muddied up.” And very liable to complain about the outcomes of their matches. Lavinia winces only slightly at the memory of one of them.[break]

“Y’wouldn’t happen to be one of ‘em yourself, would ya?” She asks with a friendly smile. He seems like he could be dressed for the part, mysterious mask to seal the deal. “Mister…?” Lavinia tries to dig out his name in curiosity.[break]

Which is bizarre! It used to feel like a birdcage, but now she’s able to recognize the good in Lilycove. The calm beach atmosphere at night, the boardwalk vendors and aquatic Pokemon strolling the streets giving it life, and it manages the perfect level of modern convenience to boot. Most people dream of being able to live in this vacation spot.[break]

Tourists are abound, but few know the city as well as a former local. With that local knowledge comes knowledge that there’s a certain show happening in the aquarium. Being a beachside town, there’s a certain level of adoration showered upon water types and their trainers. It goes beyond battling and contests and into shows for the public.[break]

Mermaid shows, to be specific! Lavinia finds herself within the crowd, watching as a Primarina and its trainer elegantly delve into waters full of Goldeen and Luvisc–among other fish-y Pokemon. Vinnie had thought it cruel to leave her friend from home out of the showing! Her Lillipup sits at her side, tail wagging absently.[break]

…Or Vinnie had thought he was sitting at her side. She hears a familiar-sounding high-pitched bark coming from further away than that. Immediately Lavinia turns her head, notices her dog Pokemon is missing and heads for the source. “I’m so sorry miss…!” She bends down to pick up the Lillipup, hoisting him off the ground and turning him away from the lady he’d been barking at. “He doesn’t get out much, I’m afraid! He didn’t bother you, did he?”[break]

That fancy mixology course has done Lavinia much good in the long run. Her eccentric personality and willingness for change helps with that. Annual ren-faires aren’t out of the ordinary in Hoenn, and lucky her! They’re always open to new seasonal staffing. Preferably staffing that’s more than willing to dress in some silly old-timey clothes and talk the part as well.[break]

Lavinia’s more than in. She already has the wardrobe, actually! One of those medieval-y, off-shoulder white blouses, a nice, long burgundy skirt, and a green corset top to finish the look! Barmaid accomplished. The Rattata poised atop her shoulder isn’t necessarily part of the dress code or very sanitary, but he’s there to stay! Some customers seem more than happy to see him.[break]

The bar set-up is a bit different than she’s accustomed to. That makes sense as it’s a temporary fixture. What she finds truly fascinating are the mugs. Ceramic pieces sculpted to resemble the many trees surrounding the fair. Lavinia slides an empty one on the counter before a new customer.[break]

“Howdy, traveler!” She says with a bright grin and a wink. “Anythin’ I could get ya? Drink or otherwise?” Her Rattata chirps, crawling down her arm and onto the counter in a greeting of his own.
