an NDA? that only made him more curious. "i see. i will have to reach out to some league contacts about the inner workings. my background won't be applied so easily to such delicate work, but i am impressed that the energy can be harnessed so well."[break][break]

haoyu had, in fact, not witnessed baby celsteela. the imagery crafted by saskia forced a laugh from him. "onions," he echoed with amusement.[break][break]

he nearly tripped on something green in the descending path. he corrected, then turned to look at what could not be a pipe but rather... a celsteela arm itself.[break][break]

"wild," he commented breathlessly. "there are not many pokemon that fall apart in pieces like this, and fewer still that break functionally. these arms are frequently used in construction." he had helped out at an alolan firestation that used one for managing forest brush. he was going to add on with a story, but some odd musical notes caught his attention. he turned from saskia back towards the path to see-[break][break]

her utter comfort around her pokemon was clear.[break][break]

"i've never seen this before. i've had a long time with my team of pokemon, but this looks more complicated than just a strong bond. who made this sygna suit?" he blanched as she brought a beedrill over.[break][break]

his hearing wasn't the greatest, but he wasn't sure he could handle losing what he had left. "maybe save the beedrill for when we're at a greater distance," he commented nervously, though grookey ran towards the beedrill with excitement, moving her sticks together to make a percussion to compliment the buzz of it already.[break][break]

words failed him at first. what he saw was impossible. balancing on a thick vine during a vine whip was...[break][break]

ah, but she asked a question. "i wanted to walk through the woods to get my dear grookey some time outside. of course, i heard from a colleague in lilycove that there used to be a blight in this woods."[break][break]

he looked around pointedly. "i work in environmental forensics, though i really just consult these days. my time is spent at the fire department more often. ah, but that's not what you asked about. i thought i would see how petalburg is holding up. i wasn't expecting to see something so, ah, inconceivable. how is it that you can work with your pokemon like this?"[break][break]

haoyu tipped his chin down in acknowledgement of the ranger. "glad to have some support," he responded earnestly.[break][break]

he looked where she indicated and smiled. "celsteela are such interesting pokemon, aren't they? they don't seem like the kind of pokemon that can learn ingrain or leech seed." he looked at the vast collection of them in the crater.[break][break]

"they are more dangerous than many believe, despite the concern we should have for their size, because they are often stoic and self-concerned." haoyu started down the path that winded down haphazardly to the base of the crater. "unfortunately, we must risk proximity to get a sample of the dust at the base of the crater; i believe the properties of it will be different than that at the lip -- perhaps from cross-contamination of celsteela landing again." he chattered on without self-awareness. environmental forensics held a special place in his heart.[break][break]

his eyes must have deceived him.[break][break]

was there really a woman sitting at the end of a vine, balanced and unafraid?[break][break]

he couldn't make out her expression, but the body language was clear. she didn't seem to be fighting with the venusaur at all. still, he felt obligated, "hey! miss, are you alright?" he stepped into the clearing tentatively, aware the venusaur had great destructive power at its size. grookey landed beside him and stood between him and the pokemon in case anything were to happen; her energetic self was now still as a statue as she stared down the other grass-type.[break][break]

a newcomer to visiting what was aptly named the wilds, haoyu had requested a ranger escort. he was plenty capable, but he knew his physical strength was on a decline. it was good to have a capable trainer with him as backup.[break][break]

his energetic grookey had no scruples. she basically bounced around with how fired up she was to see the crater.[break][break]

haoyu stood at the lip of the crater. because of previous travelers, there was a decent path down, but this was a logical waiting point for his escort. the celsteela below were humongous. there were basically buildings, some of them skyscrapers.[break][break]

haoyu was not as spry as he once was, so it was difficult to keep up with his energetic grookey. she was having the time of her life jumping between trees above him.[break][break]

and then haoyu heard a loud crash.[break][break]

that didn't sound like normal activity for the woods, even if he had claimed lilycove as his home and was less familiar with petalburg. grookey looked to him inquisitively, and he nodded. "let's go see." his pokemon stayed far closer to him as they chased the noise, protective.[break][break]

the man could be abrasive to some, but haoyu appreciated his honesty and sharp edges.[break][break]

of course, that didn't mean he always trusted the other man's judgement. "self-inflicted?" he frowned. his disapproval was clear. "and why are we doing such a thing?"[break][break]

he tried not to be judgmental, but there were a lot of artificial and manufactured substances that were hell on the body. his brief stint in medicine and longer experimentation with homeopathy and environmental cures left him preferring purely natural substances if one were to indulge. alcohol was one demon, but it was clear to him that that wasn't all nikita was experiencing. she had a great pitch for the mochi. "yes, let's do one green-tea-" the grookey whined and looked at him with big, begging eyes.[break][break]

he sighed. "let's do a variety box." grookey cheered, jumping up and down. he couldn't help but shake his head. when had he gotten so soft? the box was more mochi than the grookey needed, but only half as much as she wanted.[break][break]

"by the way," he started as he pulled out some PD, "is this for a cause? i haven't seen a crowd like this for a while."[break]

grookey, on the other hand, kept leaving his side to chase the aromatic scents. haoyu struggled to pursue the green pokemon in the crowd, but he found her standing right in front of the bake sale table. she made excited and inquisitive noises as the young woman in pink made her pitch.[break][break]

he sighed. okay, one pokemon treat and that's it. "excuse me," he said as he approached to stand beside his grookey, "is there anything you would recommend for her?"[break]
