june's hand makes miyako lose grip of her paper and pen, and it clatters to the asphalt underfoot with a resonant thud, causing miyako's brows to knit together. "what the fu--"[break][break]

miyako is about to lean down and recover her supplies when june's sudden movement catches the officer's attention—an understatement, really, as miyako finds her eyes lingering on the spot of june's chest where her zipper demarcates the difference between a plunging neckline and the rest of her jacket. "--uckkkkkkkk...?" her nigh abandoned curse comes out of her throat strangled, a little breathy, rougher than she intends.[break][break]

june bet right. miyako is bi. and, right now, miyako is counting her lucky stars that she is, because dayummmmmmm.[break][break]

miyako feels the heat rush to her face as she tries to process what just happened. her mind is muddled, a mess of alcohol and exhaustion, making it difficult to focus on anything but the image in front of her. for a split second, she's caught, her eyes betraying her as they flicker downward. but then the reality of the situation hits her like a cold splash of water. yeah, she's gotta do her job now, no matter how much she doesn't want to.[break][break]

her expression hardens, albeit artificially, as she straightens up, trying to regain her composure. miyako steps back, breaking the momentary tension, and clenches her fists to steady herself.[break][break]

"you're under arrest," miyako says, her voice firmer now, though the rasp from earlier still lingers. she bends down to pick up her pen and notepad, slipping them back into her pocket with a quick motion. then, she reaches for the handcuffs on her belt. "turn around and put your hands behind your back. now."

the steady rhythm of whiskey’s paws hitting the ground echo through the dimly lit tunnel, each step a comforting thud that reverberates off the stone walls. rusturf tunnel is quiet today, the usual flow of hikers and travelers noticeably absent, which suits miyako just fine. she isn’t here for the sights or the sounds—she is here because she is bored out of her mind and needed something, anything, to do.[break][break]

miyako leans forward slightly, her hands gripping the thick fur of her stoutland as they navigate the uneven terrain. whiskey, ever the reliable companion, moves with practiced ease, his nose occasionally twitching as he picks up on scents hidden in the cool, damp air. the tunnel might not be the most exciting place in hoenn, but it is better than sitting around doing nothing. besides, there is a certain peace in the isolation, the way the world outside seemed to fade away, leaving only the rhythmic sound of whiskey’s paws and the distant drip of water from the tunnel ceiling.[break][break]

"ugh, whiskey," miyako muttered, looking down and patting her loyal steed. the stoutland gives a huff in response, his ears flicking back to catch her voice. "there's gotta be somewhere cool in this damn place. sniff it out, 'kay?"[break][break]

as if on cue, whiskey steers the both of them down a narrower path, the tunnel’s rocky walls pressing closer on either side. the dim light from her flashlight casts long shadows, making the space feel even more enclosed, but miyako doesn't mind. spelunking is kinda hip and cool right now anyways.

miyako had heard the rumors—josh devlin was in pacifidlog. she couldn't resist the urge to see it for herself. after all, how often did you get to witness someone riding pokémon like it was an extreme sport? while she could often care less about her job, and cutting corners was a way of life for her, she was also an extreme adrenaline junkie, and she knew she couldn't miss this.[break][break]

she arrives at the floating city with a purpose, her camera ready and her mind clear. as she wanders the docks, her eyes scan the horizon until she spots him—a figure with unmistakable spiky black hair, standing beside a pokémon that made her brows raise. she doesn't even recognize it, she only knows that it looks like it just stepped out of some epic fantasy book.[break][break]

"josh devlin, right?" she calls out, a grin spreading across her face as she draws closer. "you ridin' that thing?"[break][break]

she doesn't really want to act like a fangirl, so she tries to play it cool, even if there's a bit of an uncharacteristic pep in her step. "mind if i get a few shots? they'd look cool as hell," she says, indicating to the camera hanging around her neck. the unspoken part of her also wants to ride the walking wake.

miyako lets out a low whistle as she watches the tyranitar finally come to a stop, her eyes wide with a mixture of awe and disbelief. she had seen some wild things in her time, but this? this is something else entirely. as the green-haired woman weakly waves, miyako quickly closes the distance between them, a grin spreading across her face.[break][break]

"dude!" she calls out, practically bouncing on her feet as she reaches shalin. "were you riding that thing? that’s freaking awesome!"[break][break]

miyako's excitement is palpable, her exhaustion from earlier completely forgotten. "i mean, look at this guy!" she gestures to the massive rock-armored Pokémon, her voice filled with awe. ...she kinda wants to ride the thing too. is it like a bucking tauros at all those old rodeo shows? "like, how? and can i try?"

miyako doesn't lower her camera immediately, even as she senses the presence of someone behind her. the absol, though still for a moment,swiftly vanishes into the trees, leaving only the rustling of leaves in its wake. just as it does, miyako clicks the shutter and captures the scene before leaning backwards to lay eyes upon the photo taken. a wide shot of the forest. it is lonely, almost melancholy, save for the hind legs of the absol, diving into underbrush. a good photo, if miyako says so herself. artistically, at least. she's unsure how it will fare for the other photographer's needs.[break][break]

miyako finally straightens and stands to her full height, though still doesn't give the councilwoman her full attention as she quickly runs her fingertips across the smooth chrome surface of her camera in search of adjusting a few settings. "well, i'd say a job done quickly is better than a job done slowly," miyako says finally, a hint of a smile curling up at the corners of her mouth.[break][break]

she looks up to penelope finally, brushing a loose strand of stark black hair from her face. "you got any experience with a camera?"

miyako removes her respirator as soon as they crest above the water. her hair is soaked, her body uncomfortably wet, and her knuckles certainly bruised from the force with which she punched the dondozo (which, in retrospect, did very little), but there's a wide smile on her face.[break][break]

she gets the undercurrent of kyle's question, and the way he looks at the steel lockbox. why even bother? he seems to be saying.[break][break]

"and all i had to do was punch a dumb fish!" is miyako's reply, and the feeling behind her words is also clear: success is so much sweeter when you do very little to achieve it.[break][break]

and truly, they both had done very little. bar punching a fish and digging for a few moments beneath some sediment, the lockbox had honestly fallen into her hands. she'd say the day had turned out to be a success.[break][break]

still, doing all of that was still way more than she was used to. miyako yawns and stretches as she feels her eyelids grow heavier. "tell me when we're back at shore, 'kay?"[break][break]

with that, she reclines on the back of kyle's gyarados, promptly falling asleep with the lockbox in her lap.

miyako closes her eyes, in the arceus give me strength kind of way, as the cyclist begins to make at least a few excuses for running a red light.[break][break]

"if i'm remembering right, the light before red—yellow—means slow down, and not speed up," miyako sighs, rubbing at her temple with a gloved finger. "even if nobody got hurt, it's just reckless. you'll get someone killed if you keep doing shit like that."[break][break]

and that's the whole point of miyako's job, isn't it? to keep people from getting killed? yeah, right. as if cops are actually useful nowadays.[break][break]

miyako sighs again as she pulls a pad and pen out from her pocket. maybe a fine might make a difference? nobody really wants to pay a few hundred pokedollars everytime they run a light. is it a deterrent, though? or just a motivation to be a bit sneakier about it? miyako's unsure. maybe this was the wrong career choice. "sorry. writing you a ticket. didn't really want to, but here we are."

miyako feels the dull throb of her fist from where it made contact with the dondozo's head, though the feeling of adrenaline still courses through her veins, dulling the pain. as she watches kyle’s gyarados latch onto the massive fish, dragging it away, the water around her stirs violently, creating a cloud of silt and debris that obscures her vision. the swirling chaos of the underwater battle momentarily engulfs her, and miyako finds herself kicked back a few feet by the current.[break][break]

she quickly regains her balance, her eyes narrowing as she notices something glinting in the disturbed silt. With the dondozo now preoccupied and kyle seemingly content to watch from a distance, miyako dives toward the source of the glint.[break][break]

her fingers dig into the soft sediment, sifting through it until they close around something solid. it's cold to the touch, slightly metallic, and after a bit of effort, miyako pulls it free from the muck. she squints through the murky water, trying to make sense of the object in her hand.[break][break]

it's a rusted steel box, the lock broken from however many moons it's sat undisturbed beneath the ocean. when she opens the top...[break][break]

holy shit. jackpot.[break][break]

a stir of bubbles forms around miyako as she gasps, then inclines the box to show kyle from where she floats, almost oblivious to the chaos behind her. within the rusted box is a massive collection of cds, most of them in a semblance of good condition. a pretty great find, if miyako does say so herself.[break][break]

the real problem now is getting the hell out of there. closing the box, miyako indicates to kyle with one finger pointing upwards, towards the sunlight, at which point she begins kicking up.[break][break]

miyako squints through the murky water, trying to make sense of kyle's flailing hand gestures. the whirlpool created by the battling gyarados and dondozo makes it even harder to focus. whatever kyle's trying to say, miyako's patience runs thin.[break][break]

forget it, she thinks, her frustration bubbling over.[break][break]

without overthinking it, miyako swims straight toward the massive dondozo. the creature looms like a living fortress beneath the water, its eyes fixated on gyarados. miyako doesn’t care that it’s probably not the best idea, or that kyle might have had something more strategic in mind. she just wants to put an end to this chaos.[break][break]

she propels herself forward with a burst of speed, her fist clenched tight. the dondozo, preoccupied with gyarados, doesn’t notice her approach until it’s too late. with all the force she can muster, miyako delivers a solid punch right to the side of the dondozo’s massive head. since she doesn't have any pokemon suitable for being underwater, she had to take matters into her own hands.[break][break]

miyako's eyes narrow as she pulls up alongside june's bike, the siren still wailing in the background. her head pounds with each beat of the noise, and she can practically feel the hangover digging its claws deeper into her skull. she takes a deep breath, trying to gather what little patience she has left.[break][break]

"you're shitting me, right?" miyako mutters under her breath as she stares at june's nonchalant demeanor. the visor flips up to reveal a pair of eyes that don’t look the least bit guilty. miyako can’t decide if she’s impressed by the audacity or just annoyed.[break][break]

the officer kills the siren, savoring the sudden quiet like a cool drink of water. even so, the relief is short-lived as she focuses on the situation at hand. her voice comes out rougher than she intends, a mix of exhaustion and frustration seeping through as she tilts her head down to look at the motorcyclist from above her sunglasses.[break][break]

"so, like, i think we both know why i pulled you over," miyako begins, every word that comes out of mouth sounding a lot like she's fighting her own vocal chords at every turn. "here's my request, though. can you just, like, not do that? like, you just don't have to. following traffic laws makes both of our nights so much easier."[break][break]

miyako doesn't want to deal with this. she wants to be anywhere else but here. but this is slateport, and the city never sleeps, even when she desperately needs it to.

miyako is still groggy as she dismounts whiskey, taking in the peacefulness of route 114. the air is crisp, and the scent of pine fills her lungs as she reaches up high to stretch out her arms. but, before she can fully relax, the ground beneath her feet begins to tremble.[break][break]

"what the hell…?" she mutters, instantly alert as the distant sound of crashing rocks and thundering footsteps reach her ears. miyako's instincts kick in, her hand immediately reaching for the pokeballs clasped to her belt loops. whiskey stands by her side, growling low, his eyes locked on the source of the disturbance.[break][break]

then, appearing on the trail ahead, is a massive, rock-armored Pokémon barreling toward them, the sheer force of its movement sending debris flying. what truly catches miyako’s eye isn’t just the terrifying beast itself—it is the person riding it. a green-haired woman, clinging to reins attached to the thrashing creature, completely fearless.[break][break]

miyako's eyes go wide. goddamn. that's cool as shit.[break][break]

even so, before the woman can process what she is seeing, a screech pierces the air, followed by a sharp cawing. her gaze snaps upward, where a mandibuzz is circling above, its keen eyes locked on a target down the trail—a small, defenseless mudbray that had wandered into the chaos.[break][break]

oh boy. poor thing. miyako doesn't really wanna see the vulture eat the poor thing, so the officer languorously pulls an empty pokeball from her bag.

miyako adjusts the strap of her camera, the familiar weight of it resting against her chest as she double-checks the settings. the request had come in late last night—a photographer working for the league needed assistance in capturing images of some rare wildlife. who better to send than someone who could do the job and watch their own back?[break][break]

“perfect gig,” miyako mutters to herself as she scans the horizon, the dense forest ahead of her hiding the first location on her list. the air is thick with the scent of pine and damp earth, the kind of place where you need to watch your step just as much as your surroundings.[break][break]

she isn’t worried. this isn’t her first rodeo, and it certainly won’t be her last.[break][break]

there should be a league-assigned partner meeting her right about now. for now, though... it doesn't hurt to get a head start! her eyes narrows as she spots movement in the underbrush—a flash of white and black that she recognized as an absol, its form sleek and powerful as it moved through the shadows. this is a bad omen, she's pretty sure. oh well.[break][break]

keeping her pointer finger on the shutter, miyako raises the viewfinder of her camera to her eye.

miyako can't help but laugh aloud at the stranger's caution. "i'm a photographer," miyako snorts. "sitting in weird places and taking pictures of random shit is kind of in the job description."[break][break]

miyako begins to incline her camera towards the man to allow him a chance to see the shot she had snapped, but pauses as the ranger picks up the ball of cotton. miyako hears the soft cry of the sheep pokémon and looks down to see the mareep nudging at silverio’s legs. the whole situation is almost absurd, but somehow it feels right for a quiet night in slateport. she raises her camera, snapping a few more candid shots of the mareep and lycanroc, their contrasting forms making for an interesting composition.[break][break]

but her attention is quickly diverted by a metallic glint in the corner of her eye. miyako smirks as she spots a ferroseed, half-buried in the shadows of the stall. it’s nestled between a pile of crates, its spikes glinting dangerously in the dim light. the mareep must have drawn it out of hiding with its electrical energy, and now it’s rolling slowly toward them, its spikes ready to launch at any perceived threat.[break][break]

"oh boy," miyako murmurs as she unclips a pokeball from her belt. "sneaking up on me, huh?"
