the music in the bar fades into the background. it's dimly lit, and only a few people are there, nursing their drinks. the only ones talking are a couple that laughs quietly in a corner. they're sipping from a single shared glass. on the countertop, a mandibuzz sits, watching the room guardedly. the walls are plastered with art, and further in the back there's two bathroom doors and then, even further... a door leading into an office.

a woman is seated there at a desk facing the doorway. her feet are up on the desk and she's got headphones on as she flips through a book. when she notices she has a visitor, maisie pauses mid-flip and puts the book down.

"you look like you mean business!" she chirps. a dreepy crawls out of her hair, staring at you blankly. "what i can do for you, mate? need something or somebody found?" a faint haze lingers in the air. the office reeks of cigarette smoke. indeed, there's a full ash tray there on her desk. the window remains shut, as if the detective is completely oblivious to the effect smoking has on a closed room.

THE MAUSOLEUM

Description: a small, gothic-styled dive bar that offers a variety of drinks, as well as darts and a pool table. prices are fairly cheap and the booze is good. the owner, maisie maudlin, doesn't take shit from anyone, and runs an independent detective agency from her office in the back. on the floor above is maisie's apartment, though of course the stairwell leading there is always locked.

maisie sounds like ado! i chose this one because it's silly like her and you can hear ado's regular speaking voice too

why did she come here again? she was going to buy something... oh, well. it's not often she goes out this way. she used to be able to just fly her hydreigon to places, but... that's neither here nor there. it's not anywhere, in fact. one day her little ones will grow up, but they'll never replace what she lost.

her zorua trots alongside her. oh, right! treats! she came here to get a specific type of chew that her canine companions love! there's a shop here that sells them, and so far it hasn't expanded outside of pacifidlog, so she has to go out of her way to get it. in such a pleasant, sunny area, she sticks out like a sore thumb. if maisie minded the stares, though, she wouldn't dress like this.

her eye catches on something. is that...?

without warning, she rushes over to the strange man and his even stranger pokemon. maisie gasps in delight, already fawning over it. "that zoroark...! what a cutie!! i've heard of 'em but never seen one in person!" she gushes, entranced with its wispy fur and sad eyes. her own zorua, however, is puffing up, hiding behind her leg.

stakeouts by yourself are boring.

there was a time in maisie's past life where she enjoyed them. just shooting the shit with her partner-- her work partner, not her life partner, (though what was the difference, really?)-- and chowing down on some gas station snacks while they waited for something of note to happen. now she has no partner, and no car, so it's just her on her own two feet, hitting the pavement as usual.

the target this time is a supposed black market dealer who works with smugglers bringing in paldean pokemon. the goal isn't to arrest them, but to get information from them so she can follow the path down to the smugglers themselves. first, though, she has to find the right location.

and that's when she bumps into a face she recognizes, though it's not someone she's ever spoken to.

maisie lowers her hand, cigarette still pinched between two fingers. "oh, hell," she grumbles. "you're with the HBIC, aren't you? didn't know they were workin' this case too." she sticks her tongue out, light glinting off the stud in it. she keeps an eye on most of the detectives in the area. they're technically competition, after all.
