this feels like

a test. and as soon as persephone releases her lucario, rhian's certain that she's already failed it. not one to give up, though, she procures to think fast: the longer she took to pick her own partner pokémon for the mission, the less cookie points she'd get.

their main objective would be apprehension, she reasons. in that case, brute force isn't necessarily the only route to success.

rhian's hand hovers over the left-most pokéball in her belt, before quickly changing to the one in the middle and releasing the klefki inside. the key ring pokémon may look like an accessory next to her superior's lucario, but he's also the pokémon who offers the most utility options out of her three.

satisfied with her choice, she allows herself time to inspect the area persephone mentioned. she notes the space center's windows are too small for even her to pass through, and her eyes are following the shape of the building when she's asked a question that makes her sweat.

wha- wait, a gym?! rhian's widening eyes wouldn't be easy to miss. "i can't say i'm a huge fan," she starts slowly, gauging the other's reaction before she can commit a fatal mistake. rhian's almost certain this is another test. "but i'd be happy to spectate, if you don't mind. i'm sure i can learn a lot from watching."

in an attempt to elude further questions (she doesn't want to have to admit to hating battles; she knows it's a tricky topic now more than ever), she tries to bring their attention back to the building.

is tight, as usual. rhian gets through clearance just fine under the pretense of visiting her great aunt, steps into the elevator, and presses the button three spaces up from where she's supposed to go. all the while, she smiles at the guard, as if nothing was out of the ordinary.

it's not a lie, technically; rhian's still visiting great aunt mona— she's just prolonging the time she has until she actually goes to her apartment. what better way to kill time than in one of the residential area's very own indoor gardens?

metal doors close behind her and she's greeted by the unnatural sight of a garden encaged within a set of glass walls.

as the girl begins her aimless walk around the foliage, the soothing orange light of the sun setting is reflected on the glasses. after a few minutes, it's completely gone, replaced instead by the artificial light of street lamps.

compared to leo's

angry stomps, rhian's steps are light. diminute. like a little mouse following after an angry lion. she's never really seen him angry before— not the way he's angry now. there was one time, back during their school years, when he punched a kid. other than that, in the three years she'd known him, leo had always been more ready to call something dumb and move on than to physically express his anger.

understandably, she doesn't quite know how to deal with a furious leo. it makes her cower a little, to be around a side of leo she doesn't know too well.

"someone needed help and there weren't enough hands, maybe?" she suggests with a small voice, fitting for how small she's feeling at the moment.

her tendency to try to put herself in the shoes of others —her empathy— precedes her. she understands why leo is so angry, she really does. she knows he was working hard on his research when they were called to verdanturf.

on the other hand, she also understands that in these trying times they had to make sacrifices sometimes and help out not where they're good at, but where they're needed. she's sure leo knows this too, deep down. he's simply too blinded by his anger to see it.

rhian's slowly

getting used to the idea of her fragile little happiny engaging in a brutal battle with her upperclassman's pokémon. and although the venipede doesn't look all that nefarious (she's played with her multiple times now), the fact that she was owned by someone with leo's reputation has her feeling quite terrified.

"of course i'm scared!" she pretty much screams at him.

what else did he expect? leonardo vermilion was a name well known around the school. highest scores in his grade, a face of unconventional appeal, and an attitude that could match the regice of myth in coolness; she wouldn't be surprised if he was also an ace trainer.

in her explosion of nerves, she ends up adding something she doesn't honestly believe and that she'd be too mortified to retract. "what regice, i think you're more like a crabominable!"

the kiss

catches her by surprise. and then that love confession? like, seriously, whoever is giving leo these flirting lessons, she needs to thank them. if she doesn't die from a heart attack first, that is.

rhian's heart is still thumping in what feels like the back of her mouth when leo pulls back. she's expecting him to lean in again for a second kiss, a proper one this time, but for this she'd be left waiting and wanting.

she needs air. and water. her face feels so hot she's certain she looks like a burning tomato right now. where was her pinap juice again? right. on the table.

she picks the can up on her way to the kitchen and downs a big gulp of pinap. the trip is a daze. so is finding a bowl, opening the microwave, and pouring the popcorn in said bowl. muscle memory is the only thing that keeps her going.

when she's done and out of things to do to keep her from thinking, she lets herself crouch into a ball of blushes and self reproach.

have to do this, leo?" asks a troubled younger rhian at her upperclassman. she hugs her happiny to her chest protectively, still hoping that leo will tell her this is all a joke and laugh it off and let them go back to their usual routine of discussing strictly theoretical hypothesis.

because it is a joke, isn't it? rhian is used to jokes. this could be as much a joke as that one time her cousin told her that if she went inside the creepy old mansion near school and caught the ghost haunting it, he and his friends would stop bothering her for the rest of the year.

her head yes out of pure reflex. the faster she gets it done, the sooner she could be back for more cuddles. she doesn't want to leave the softness of the couch or leo's comforting warmth; that much is obvious. however, she's willing to sacrifice her own momentary comfort for the greater good.

"i want pinap pizza." she's sure he doesn't need another reminder that she loves her pinap on literally everything, but it doesn't hurt to voice it anyways. who knows if, given the leeway to do so, leo would conveniently forget to order the pizza with pinap? that does sound like something he would do.

first thought

that crosses rhian's mind: head scientist amavi is so pretty. this beauty is only exacerbated when she smiles, transcending the already barely perceptible dark circles under her eyes. second thought: she seems so nice.

"yes, ma'am!" the cadet answers eagerly, if with a taste of rising worry. rhian was under the impression this was more of a routine patrol. knowing there could be real, almost guaranteed danger out there, she can't help feeling a little nervous.

it's not that she's scared of the mission, per se. what she absolutely can't let happen is for her to disappoint her superior. knowing her lineup isn't the most combat-oriented, she can only hope the hours spent watching others train comes in helpful.

helpful or not, her hours of vicarious learning would be put to test soon. she follows the head scientist out.

rhian doesn't think she can bring herself to call the head scientist by her first name— not after just meeting her. however, she also can't just ignore her wishes after being dedicated one of the woman's smiles. the only option she's got left is to nod, promising to call her by first name without compromising just yet.

intense sunlight greets them as soon as they cross the space center's doors. under the cover of the night, rhian could see someone trying to sneak in, but during broad daylight? the open space would be sure to give them away. then again, she doesn't think anybody saw the slateport invasion coming, either.

"should we split up or make the rounds together, miss... um, persephone?" a light blush blooms easily across her too-pale face.

rhian replies with an excruciatingly long hum. an act. she even taps a finger to her jaw in seemingly deep thought. this, too, is an act; cuddling is always a hard yes and leo knows it well. (fake) pout still clearly visible on her face, she scuttles to the side, giving the young man plenty of room to sit.

once he's settled down next to her, she proceeds to make herself comfortable by resting her head on his shoulder and closing her eyes.

delighting in the warmth of his body beside her, she takes a deep breath.

"yes, yes," she calmly nods. despite being called fat as a snorlax again, rhian doesn't let leo's offhanded comment get to her. not like she did before. instead, she welcomes the metaphor. "i'm your snorlax, and you're my pangoro," she whispers sweetly.

just as the microwave's timer goes off in a series of loud beeps. way to ruin the moment...

rhian's about to

get her hands on those tasty-looking chips when leo suddenly pulls them back only an inch. instead of the delicious treat, she grabs empty air (figuratively speaking, of course) and that empty air earns him a pout he wouldn't be getting rid of anytime soon.

"what?" comes her retort, defiant. "why's my boyfriend suddenly so mean?" she whines. the formerly forgotten pillow is picked up once more and is once more subjected to her antics. namely, throwing it at leo for being so mean.

as for his other question, rhian doesn't have to think it twice. her mind's already set, probably was even before the question was even asked. "i want both," she answers immediately. popcorn and pizza? best date night ever.

with a cheeky tongue stuck out and a wink, she adds, "we can just put the leftovers in the fridge for tomorrow hehe." the best thing about ordering pizza obviously is that she gets to be lazy and doesn't have to cook the following day.

she really, really doesn't know how she feels about this entire situation. leo reaches for her hand and she lets him take it, but she can't forget that he'd willingly let her pokémon get hurt. pretty hard to forget when the proof is staring right in her face.

as soon as the persian is recalled, rhian hurries to take the mimikyu back into her arms. she squeezes tight. perhaps a little too tight. if they didn't know better, one would think this a reunion after months apart, rather than literal minutes. "oh, i was so worried... you did a great job, hero."

once she's had her good share of bear hugs, rhian allows herself to soften her grip on the mimikyu enough to notice the other star of the day: leo's metagross.

"and you too, meteoro," she adds, turning to the metagross. rhian pets its head, which he seems to relish in. the success in battle isn't much of a surprise coming from him, but still he deserved his compliment. she smiles at him.

rhian doesn't notice the rockets' retreat until after it's passed. while her relief still greatly surpasses her anger with him, she asks her partner, "shouldn't we go after them?"

rhian can't believe what he's asking her. "what do you mean, distract it?" she asks, refusing to accept that she'd have to let hero pose as bait yet again. she looks for the persian to maybe try and convince herself that it would all be okay. it has the complete opposite effect.

i mean, just look at those claws! they're so sharp, they look like they could slash right through hero's blanket, and if that happens then what's underneath... nope. absolutely no way.

however, for the second time today, the mimikyu goes valiantly into battle without its trainer's confirmation. it walks, or rather creeps its way, up to the persian, looking to

charm

it once more. it wasn't hard the first time; wouldn't be hard now.

hero inches from one spot to another, seemingly dancing to the rhythm of a a tuneless song as the persian bops its paws down on the spot the mimikyu just slid away from. with each bop, rhian gasps from her spectator's seat.

the gengar glows red as it's returned to its pokéball. okay, good. rhian is relieved that they didn't have to fight against such a scary pokémon anymore, and doubly relieved because it could rest in its pokéball for a bit before its trainer (she hopes) brings it to a pokécenter.

do rocket members even go to pokécenters? do they have their own pokécenters? free pokémon healthcare is such an important basis to their society that surely not even someone looking to take down the system would dare attack them. right?

rhian glances at the two rockets in front of them. they don't look that scary after all. if anything, they look to be the scared ones. she idly hums in thought before her eyes land on the still standing persian and she's reminded of its fascination with her mimikyu.

"hero!" she calls out in warning, though not really knowing what actions to take. as usual, she turns to leo for guidance. "what do we do now, leo?"

troubled, rhian looks down at her lovingly nicknamed hero. "i don't know; you're hurt. do you think you can?" she redirects the question to the pokémon. as its reply, pokémon hops off her arms before she can say anything further. the only option she's got left is to resolve herself to support the mimikyu to the best of her ability, so that's what she does.

their two pokémon stand together. hero and meteoro, meteoro and hero; they already sound like an indie band or a superhero couple. pity right now they're only bait.

shadow ball

is released. it aims for the mimikyu this time, but hero is willing to make the sacrifice. as a true hero. its

copycat

forms a second shadow ball that phases through the first on its way to exposing the position of a gengar.
