The voice was foreign but still familiar. She turned and matched it with a friendly face. “Professor Fairy, hey! And Joli too!” She waved with her whole arm. So did Rudi, though her feet still danced. Judging by her unchanging wide-mouthed grin, there was a good chance that she was only doing it to mimic her trainer. Annie shot her Pokemon a suspicious glance, but decided against anything further.

“Charming is one of the words I might use to describe her. It’s not the one that’s coming to mind right now.” Rudi switched focus again, waving to the ocean-dwellers that waded along the coast. “But yeah, she’s mine. More of a lover than a fighter, but she’s just as good at both when she wants to be.” The Ludicolo proved her trainer right in short order; when Annie looked again, she’d found a dancing partner in a swollen-headed turtle.

“Oh, so you were listening!” Annie’s grin grew to match the dancer’s as she approached, dropping to one knee beside the Chewtle. “Hey, little dude. We’re going on an adventure to dance and make it rain. Does that sound fun to you?” She couldn’t tell whether the wild one was nodding or bobbing its head to a beat she couldn’t hear. Judging by the Pokeball she retrieved, she chose to assume it was the former.

The girl walked down the beach, closely flanked by her furry friend. Armed only with a backpack half her size, she stared straight ahead as she announced her precense. “It’s a solid plan, Rudi! If we’re going to make it rain metaphorically, we need to make it rain literally! And since you can do that, we need a team of fighters that thrive in said rain! If we can do that and train hard, then through a series of events I haven’t quite figured out yet, our money problems will be solved! Hopefully! Probably! But first, we need to actually get those Pokemon out. That’s where I’m counting on yooooooou aren’t even listening to me, are you?”

She turned around to find that her partner had stopped to dance a dozen feet behind her. Where the carefree Pokemon had even learned the Macarena, she had no idea, but it was had for her to stay annoyed at the sight of it. Instead her mouth was left open as she tried and failed to find the right words for her... energetic partner.

The look of surprise told that he was spot on long before she spoke. It made sense, especially with the mention of the avalanche. She hadn’t had time or the resources to watch, but something like that must have made the regional news. “Yeah, that was the other reason that night sucked.” She hadn’t let it show. Not in front of the people that had spurned her, anyway. If she hadn’t learned to smile through her struggles, she would have been a very different person.

His mention of his employers perked her head up a little. “…Wow. You think I look that mature?” She almost smiled. Almost. Then she remembered that being mistaken for an adult wasn’t the kind of compliment she was looking for. And that she was with him because he’d caught her committing a crime. It wasn’t the best time for a joke, especially when he brought up her good deed. “I know what it’s like to watch your home go down in flames. I don’t want to see it happen to anybody else, if I can help it.” She fidgeted with her hands, staring at the ground ahead of them. One deep breath later, and she’d pushed away the negative thoughts. The day was bad enough without her dwelling on that.

“Yeah, rangers. Too young, they said… Though I guess there’s nothing to prove that now. I can ask again, but I’ve never seen a ranger close to my age, and I’m not sure anybody would trust one either. Fifteen, by the way.” She hoped that the great outdoors hadn’t weathered her face that much. “And pretty short on options, so I guess that’s better than nothing. I’ll try it.” It was the second-best news she'd heard that day, behind realising that she wasn't about to be arrested... And yet, she couldn't seem to muster up the usual enthusiasm for it.

The Lurantis went down, but both trainer and Pokemon stood, still poised for battle. It took several seconds for Clamp to realise that his enemy wouldn’t be getting back up, and a few more for Annie to draw the same conclusion. A furrowed brow and a slight frown told of brief confusion, which slowly gave way to relief, then excitement.

“Clamp, you’re a champ!” She rushed onto the battlefield, arms wide open. Even without a look back, the Scizor’s squinted eyes said that he knew the hug was coming, and that he wasn’t in the best state to receive it. Thankfully, by the time Annie had finished her cheering run, she seemed to realise as much, drawing to a halt beside her champion. One arm lowered. The other offered a closed fist to him. With a half-cocked smile, he completed the fist bump, finally relinquishing the Swords Dance. “That. Was. Pretty awesome, if I might say so myself. Not without my help, of course, but you really showed your stuff!”

The Scizor grunted and plopped down onto the arena’s floor. It put him at the perfect height to get a few pats on the head before Annie focused her attention on the gym leader instead. An ear-to-ear grin barely contained her words. “First! I wanted to say that I love your hair! And that it matches your gym! Did you dye it? Actually, you don’t have to answer that.” She quickly shook her head, trying to focus.

“More importantly… I want something from you! Besides a gym badge, of course.” She stood before the woman, hands on hips, without a trace of shame on her face. “Your choice what. Maybe a charm, or some advice, or some cash, or your favourite training spot. Something worth remembering.” Perhaps the victory had emboldened her to dare to ask for more. Perhaps that was simply a day in the life of Annie Mei.

The Pangoro, always happy to be appreciated, took a moment out of his busy schedule to flash the man a cocky smile. Annie’s body was mostly hidden by Donnie’s, but her tone carried the same attitude as his grin. “That’s the mark of Camp Annie material. Your whipped cream dude isn’t half bad either!” Between the two Pokemon, they repelled the first line of attacks, and the third blessed Donnie with a wonderful scent. As if the beast needed any more encouragement to fight. He beat a fist against his chest and roared into the darkness, as if daring something stronger to show its face.

He got his wish. The Aegislash’s single eye glinted in the darkness, just long enough for the group to catch sight of it. It’s orders were quiet to them, for they were meant for others. A pair of Golett marched out to stand between the sword Pokemon and its targets. One was content to stare them down, acting as its shield.

The other stormed into battle with slow heavy steps and a raised fist. Ghastly energy began to surround the arm as it charged a Shadow Punch for the defense. “Donnie, can you out-punch him?” The panda didn’t need to be asked twice. He rushed to meet his enemy halfway, his arm taking on a fiery glow. The Shadow Punch was endured with little more than an annoyed grunt, and he returned fire with four quick jabs of his own. The Bullet Punch toppled the Golett over; it was down, but not out. That information seemed to have been lost on trainer and creature alike – or perhaps they were hoping it would stay out of action long enough for them to finish up.

“Good job! Let’s keep it moving and take down ol' one-eye!” Off Donnie went, fists and teeth bared as he continued the charge. Annie turned to Kazimir. “If we get those things out of the way, that might be the worst of it over, right? There can’t be much night left for them to keep attack- Errrr.” Her eyes snapped to the Golett Donnie was supposed to have defeated. The standing Golett. The Golett that was continuing the march towards her, while her Pokemon had charged ahead.

A pair of puppy dog eyes settled on Pokenger.

The walkie-talkie drew Annie’s curious eyes away from the cages she definitely wasn’t supposed to touch, and towards her window into Bo’s cabin. The girl fell silent, eyes wide for a few precious seconds. Trixie joined her in staring, their faces mere inches from the pane.

She turned on her communicator, barely-restrained excitement on her voice. “You never said that this was a spy truck! If I had a bucket list, a spy truck would totally be, like, top twenty-five on it!” She pressed her face against the window to get a better look at the new screen, eyes darting back and forth as she took in the riddle. Soon enough, Bo would hear her voice again.

“Okay, I think I’m good at these!" She wasn't. "It has to be something that touches everything, right? Like air! Or time! Or the letter E! …No, that’s another riddle. Maybe rust? No, that’s not on plants... Pokémon? Poison? A Sandstorm?” She trailed off into more inane answers, looking to Trixie for advice. Of course, her partner could do little more than raise her arms and cheer.

At least she was good for motivation.

One step closer to absolute insanity. There was something ahead, neither person nor Pokemon. Annie’s mind wouldn’t let her dwell too long on the monstrosity, just like it paid the bombs, the blasts, the cries, next to no mind. The Beast Killer had already chosen what her priority had to be.

The Hydreigon swooped low, and she spared a moment to glance at Orion. “Thanks, Oreo! I’ll be seeing you,” she said, because they were going to survive the night. With that, she leapt off the dragon, somehow sticking a three-point landing solid ground. It wasn’t far from there to her mark – the mad bomber.

She ran. It was only out of a desire to not be struck by them that she started to take in the sights. A dozen energy blasts and beams, mostly fired at the clown but some towards levitating bombs trying to join it. The beast itself had gained a barrier. One that her peers were working hard to destroy, but also one that had taken on the power of too many bombs to count. Was it explosive? There was probably only one way to find out, and she didn’t intend for her partners to be in range when they did.

“Buzz, Air Slash the glowing freak!” The Yanmega was sent out first, and though he took a second to absorb the scene, he set his sights on Blacepheon shortly after. An almighty flap of half a dozen wings sent added a blast of wind to the fray, sent straight for the beast. It would be just one of many, but hopefully, between the lot of them, they should at least weaken the Light Screen.

Annie would have sent out her next Pokemon, if not for the sight of another Type: Null. Half a dozen questions entered her head, and just as quickly she forced them aside for another day. Preferably one with less fire.

“Frankie!” Another Pokemon unleashed: her own abomination. For the moment that it was close to her, its growls were unmistakable. Something about the invader had drawn more emotion out of her friend than she’d ever seen, and it was only weeks of training that stopped it from charging straight for it. Annie knew it wouldn’t stay put for long, and as long as they weren’t about to face more explosions, she had no reason to stop it.

“Go for it! Iron Head, and don’t hold back!” Not that she thought it would have showed restraint, even if she asked. Frankie broke into a run, a roar piercing through its helmet as it stared down the only thing that mattered. Its limiter glowed pure white as it closed the distance. Brick Breaks, Dragon Darts, Psychic, Sacred Sword, countless other attacks that had weakened the barrier and its master… They would all give Type: Null the opening it needed to slam its head into the monster it was made to kill.

TL;DR: Annie ditches Orion Lykos to help take down Blacepheon. Her Yanmega uses Bug Buzz to help disable its Light Screen. She attempts to send out her Type: Null after everybody else's attacks. It uses Iron Head on Blacepheon.

He was relieved. Of course he was. Any good person would be happy to see that she’d done the right thing, and Orion was nothing if not a good person. That was why he damn-near demanded that he'd sate her hunger, at least for a few more hours. They both knew that she was in no position to decline, and yet, she couldn't bring herself to celebrate the free food. In that moment, the best she could offer him was a smile. Small and bittersweet at best, but genuine nonetheless.

Then he asked of her other methods. She sighed. Dropped on half a smile. Gave up on even that. Walked around him. Plopped down on the oversized pipe beside him. “Lots. When the weather’s good, I go out hunting. For berries, not Pokemon. They’re not much for me, but they’re better than nothing. My smaller guys can live off them, no problem. But finding enough berries for seven mouths, three times a day…” The problem added up very quickly, to the point that she looked annoyed just thinking about it. "What's it called? A zero-sum game? Imagine that, but it's your entire day. So I had to find something a little less... draining."

“I think I told you about Fortuna before. Now that she’s evolved, she can lay eggs. They tasted really good at first, but I think anybody would get sick of any food if it was all they ate for weeks. Like, I actually feel a bit queasy if I eat them more than once in a while now. So no, I don’t have to be… doing this-“ He was the only one that had called it stealing. “but the alternative isn’t great either. I think the Camp thinks its old too. The way some of them look at me when that’s all I’ve got…” Her eyes flicked away, pain reflecting in them once again. She had to distract herself with something else.

“Sometimes I find jobs. Nothing permanent. Watch this field, deliver this package. I can get a bit of money out of that, but the jobs aren’t always… ‘good’. The kind of jobs you don’t ask questions about.” People like Cotillard had gained a lot from hiring people like her, and she still wasn’t entirely sure what her work had been for. “A lot of them ask for things just as bad as stealing, or worse. I try to avoid those kinds of people, but it’s not always as easy to know who the bad guys are.”

She shuffled around on the pipe, staring at the floor. She’d thought that she liked heart-to-hearts, but she was quickly learning that she only liked positive ones. The part where she had to share her insecurities and vulnerabilities? That made her think twice. It’d been too long since she’d talked about them – at least, with somebody that could say more than their own name… But she knew that she had to try.

“I don’t like asking for help. At all. There’s nothing strong about letting strangers know that you’re struggling. But sometimes things just get that rough. It can’t have been more than a month ago now. There was this big fancy party up on Mount Chimney. Somebody was giving away prize money to tire out this old man, and my eyes lit up. I tried to get these two guys to help me out. They looked pretty well-off, or at least comfortable. I had to suck it up and tell them ‘if I don’t get this money, I’m spending Christmas Day in a box.’”

She paused again, shut her eyes. She muttered the start of a curse, but didn’t bother to finish. “I can’t say I was surprised that they ignored that, but it still stung. Didn't get the money by myself. Obviously. So that’s about as well as that goes, most of the time. Did I miss anything you had in mind?” The words might have sounded sarcastic. If he looked at her, her face told a different story. Her head still tilted towards the ground, but her eyes watched him, furrowed and sad but just a little hopeful.

The announcer’s words reaffirmed hers; gave them credence. That was all she needed to keep her confidence rolling. It didn’t waver, even as he questioned her strength. Even as the totem appeared. Even as the ground started shaking.

Her eyebrows twitched. Narrowed. Her smile went from overconfident, to overconfident and just a little confused. And concerned. But still confident. Totally confident. Right?

Horn, it was called. A mound of armoured earth if she’d ever seen one. Taller than all but one of her Pokemon, and a fair bit more imposing than most of them. The ground quaked with every step – not enough to make her lose her balance, but enough to briefly, very briefly, make her reconsider. A deep breath was all it took to rid herself of those thoughts, even as the Mawile joined the fray.

“She’ll handle it with ease!” A Pokeball was withdrawn, and from it, Trixie was revealed. The Whimsicott got halfway through a cheer before she realised she was fighting, two on one. That was when Annie’s other hand moved into her pocket, withdrawing… a blade of grass. “Ready, Trix?” The cotton ball took the blade, and gave her trainer a devious grin. Annie stepped back, pointing towards the Mawile. “Give the world a show. Get it with a Grass Whistle!”

The Mawile turned around, baring its second mouth at the Whimsicott. It was too slow. The devilish smile wasn’t for nothing, and neither was her name. The fluffball was a Trickster, so with her instrument already in hand, playing a lullaby was both trivial and surprisingly fast. In short order, the playing field was even, and Trixie only had one earth titan to handle.
They’d almost forgotten about it.
Almost.
The Stone Edge was a rude reminder, sending her flying into the air.

Annie grit her teeth. She knew her partner would be fine. Appearances could be deceiving, and few taught that lesson better than her little nightmare. Still, she never enjoyed seeing her Pokemon hurt. “That’s half the job done. Finish things up! Hit Horn with a Giga Drain!” Trixie’s mane cushioned her blow, and with a quick flip, she was back on her feet and charging her next attack. The rocky rhino would be treated to a health-sapping beam of energy, one that could had ended the fight if not for its own ability. It still had fight left in it. Enough to charge horn-first towards the little fighter.

“Hold…” Annie’s open hand gestured for her Pokemon to stop. Said Pokemon had other things to look at besides her, but that had never stopped Annie from doing them anyway. It wasn’t until Horn was three thundering steps away that she called for her to “Dodge!”, and so the cotton ball bounded her way out of a Hammer Arm to the face.

Trixie was in the air. The rhino was looking up, waiting for her to drop low enough for a critical blow. That meant the trainer had a critical moment, and she was taking a little too long to act on it. She couldn’t afford to. Not when the spotlight was on her.

She took a deep breath in and made the call. “Moonblast!” There was no moon in sight, but Trixie knew how to make do. A pink ball was fired from between her arms, slamming into the rhino’s body. It stumbled, then toppled over, shaking the ground one last time as his body hit it. The sleeping Mawile was handled with an empty Pokeball against its body. Annie let out a breath she didn’t know that she was holding. To think that was only the first challenge.
