they're headed toward Lavaridge, if you want a location check. Currently somewhere not too far from the cable cars? So that's some distance down.

Okay, maybe dawdling around the area was a good idea. While he had yet to explore around the Mt. Chimney area properly, here he was, looking around and trying to shake out the ash that was constantly falling down all around him. While on some days the ash fall wasn’t as bad, today was one of the days when the active volcano was coughing up so much more ash fall than what was normal, it was practically a crime.

“Ugh,” was all Alexei could grumble as he raised his hand to his hair to shake out some of the very fine ‘powder’ that was falling down all around him. While the area wasn’t as hot as it should’ve been, he’d decided to take off his jacket and had tied it around his waist; but left the scarf on—albeit loosening how he’d wound it around his neck so he could have some more insulation.

Did the ash really have to fall as fine as snow in these parts? For that matter, was there even snow in the Hoenn region? Unlike Unova, where the northern part always had a layer of snow year-round regardless of season; this region only seemed to have two distinct weathers: hell, or high water. Well, unless one counted Shoal Cave, but only the lowest parts of said cave had the aforementioned ‘snow’ within its chambers…

Either way, he continued to tramp down the face of the mountain, seeing something not too far ahead… wait a second… was that a sack? But who the hell was carrying it?

He then quickened his pace, eventually coming upon a Delibird who was lugging said sack around—and noticeably it was alone. Where was its Trainer?

“Hey… where’s your companion?” he asked the Flying-type, not knowing if he was going to get a straight answer or not. Much tempted as he was to bonk it on the head with a Pokéball to check if it had an owner already, he squashed that impulse and looked around.

“Look, are you sure you can carry this sack all by yourself? Don’t you have companions?”

"It's been like that for a while," Kyle would raise his voice at the inquiry of the newcomer.

A small canine was on its leash, for attempting to run at random directions away from Kyle, which the trainer held on his left hand. The right hand was kept free, which he used every so often to wipe off ash off of him once enough has accumulated either on his head or on his articles of clothing. Eyes were strained as he tried well enough to identify the other, partly recognizing him in one way or another. He gave up quickly, however, fixing his expression to a more relaxed one afterwards.

He approached him, tugging the leash along without regard to the pup on the other end. It wasn't like it was unwarranted though, given that the Poochyena kept going for the opposite direction. Regardless, Delta paid no attention to Alexei even as they neared him, putting his all on overpowering his trainer, to no avail.

"I'm pretty sure it's alone. I've passed by it multiple times already and saw no trainer trying to go back for it."

His attention went to the Deliberd, who tried its best trying to get the sack moving. Though Kyle had noticed it way long before the gym leader showed up, he made no attempt to find out what was wrong with it. It didn't seem like the type to accept it anyways from the looks of it.

"I wonder how long it'll be before it eventually gives up and drops whatever is in its sack," he mused out loud.

oyaji bird, that's what it is.

“So it’s acting like a stubborn old man, then?” he asked curiously, a curious twinkle in his eye. “Maybe one of my companions can deal with—“ he tried to explain, eyebrows going up slightly at the Poochyena on the leash, trying with all its might to get away from the one who’d approached him. He then realized that maybe the leash was kind of necessary—he knew Poochyenas in general were fiercely-territorial and rather aggressive canids, but this one…didn’t seem to be the case.

Either way…

“Let’s see if this is going to work,” he remarked, rummaging through the pockets of his jackets for a few moments until he popped a Moon Ball to full size and sent his Riolu out, watching as the beam of red light transformed into a somersaulting jackal-like Pokémon.

Once the Fighting-type had materialized, it then sniffed the air curiously—before sneezing due to the ash falling all around it. Oops.

“Vince. Hey, Vincent! he called, clearing his throat slightly as the Riolu was about to dash off towards the large sack. Don’t just take what’s not yours. Anywho. Can you try communicating with that Delibird?” he asked, tilting his head in the direction of where the sack was now stubbornly trying to inch forward. Clearly, said sack was many times too large for one single Pokémon to carry alone, and he was highly tempted to summon his Braviary and hoist the damn thing into the air before having it fly off to wherever the Delibird was headed.

Since there was only one place at the foot of the mountain—he took a guess it was Lavaridge.

Nodding before sneezing again, the Riolu cautiously approached the Delibird, still struggling valiantly to pull the overloaded sack forward as best as it could manage, despite it being many times smaller and alone as compared to the large sack that contained who-knew-what.

“Who knows if this is going to work…”

Eyes widened at the sight of the Riolu, though Kyle dared not to speak any of his thoughts out loud. He wanted one, but then again, he can't be bothered to hunt for it. The only way he'd probably obtain one is through a gift or if one wandered in front of him by chance anyways.

Kyle was interested on how the stranger dealt with the problem he put himself up. The Delibird clearly did not mind getting any help from anyone, as he noticed earlier ever since he kept a close eye on it whenever he passed by it. The idea that maybe humans were the only ones it would react negatively to did not occur to him until the Riolu was called in to intermediate between the trainer and the wild Pokemon though.

"Maybe. I'm not sure. It seems suspicious towards trainers. Dunno if that applies to our Pokemon as well."

Or maybe just interaction with anyone else in general. Kyle did not bring that up though, given that the person he was with seemed too enthusiastic in assisting the Pokemon. It was a wild Pokemon after all, and for all he knows, the Delibird could simply just be doing its own thing that was beyond their comprehension. Kyle would continue to watch, before a sudden tug of his Poochyena made him realize how awkward it would be to keep the other person talking without him saying his piece.

"Why're you so keen on helping it though?" he finally asked, though the way it was presented was more akin to blurting out his thoughts out loud. "Pokemon do weird shit all the time. Maybe it doesn't actually need help."

the truth becomes clear!

A loud yelp came from the Riolu’s direction as he’d approached the Delibird—only to be batted back with a box to the face. Unfortunately, this box wasn’t the kind that healed; it was the kind that exploded and caused the Fighting-type to let out a yip of dismay as he jumped back before watching the huffy Delibird return his attention to the gigantic sack that it was trying to pull down the slope.

“Huh, not even from a fellow Pokémon,” he mused quietly, having overheard the small explosion before seeing his Riolu emerge from the other side of the sack, trying to wipe the soot off its snout. Looking up at the other, Alexei spoke up.

“Gotten reports that there was some kind of… giant obstruction blocking the way, that’s been here for a few days now. Apparently they thought it was a gigantic rock that had fallen down from one of the mountain sides… apparently it’s not, it’s this instead, he supplied, tilting his head in the direction of the sack that was blocking most of the traversable path. “And they want it out of the way. How was I supposed to know that it was actually a stubborn old Delibird?” he mused a few moments later.

How do we get this thing to move… he thought to himself a few moments later, his Riolu still hanging around his feet and sneezing as more ash fell on its snout. After around a minute of silence, he looked at the sack, and wondered if it was going to be possible for one or possibly both of his other companions to lift it.

“Seeing as the Delibird’s being stubborn… might as well have to resort to scaring it to move… he frowned, concern on his features. “Have no choice but to frighten it, then…” before reaching into his pocket and pulling out a Moon Ball and popping it to full size. A few seconds later, a beam of red light transformed into a Salamence, who was about to roar loudly because he was disturbed; before Alexei quickly held up his fingers to his lips.

“Shh,” he began, pointing at the sack that was blocking most of the way. Can you go up front and scare the Delibird? It’s about the only other thing I can think of so he can move. Once you send the bird scurrying over here, I’ll summon Kyou and have him lift the sack… judging from the size I think he can carry it…” he added, and watched before the draconid grumbled but nodded, eventually taking off to the sky so it could come in from the opposite direction and roar in the Delibird’s face.

“…and now, we wait.”

Kyle simply kept nodding as he mentally noted every detail that was explained to him before forgetting them immediately. He didn't really care about what was tasked to the person before him as much as wanted to judge his character, though he couldn't really complain after he had heard his side. Eventually, he agreed that the Delibird needs to move, though the methods were starting to get more dubious as he went for the next choice of strategy.

"I don't think scaring it will help," he'd started to open up, worry for the wild Pokemon evident in his voice. "It looks, as you said, very old. It might die the moment it gets a heart complication from the sudden scare. At best, it will probably have to leave everything in its sack to save itse-"

The words came to an abrupt stop, and so did his show of compassion. Kyle started to mentally map the thought process he had in his head before eyeing the sack that the Delibird has in possession. Whatever was inside it, he could only guess that the Pokemon deemed it to be valuable. Important stuff tend to fetch a high price in the market, and even should it not, it probably was still useful in one way or another. A Pokemon's judgement in objects, however, was not something it shared with people like Kyle.

There was no harm in trying though, he supposed.

"Actually, yeah, maybe we should try that," he'd agree, positioning himself beside him as he watched the Salamence's trainer's plan unfold. "It feels like mugging an old man. You're trying to steal from it, right?" The words were for affirmation. He did mention having someone to lift the sack (or the contents of it, as Kyle perceived his words to convey) after all.

someone being a devious little shit *snort*

“You never know,” was all he said, squinting up in the sky and seeing that the Salamence was now in position, waiting for the command. He knew that there was another way to set off his draconid, and he reached into his shirt before pulling out a thin whistle he wore around his neck.

“Humans can’t hear this, but Pokémon can—specifically, my Salamence up there, he added quietly, making a gesture at the speck that was hovering above where they stood, and with it he brought the thin whistle to his lips and gave three exact puffs.

While it didn’t sound like anything to both humans on the ground, the Salamence high above heard it—and he wasn’t expecting his Riolu to have heard it as well. “Here he comes, now,” he mused, quickly recalling the Riolu back into its Pokéball the moment the speck hovering far above swooped down, closer, closer… much closer…

Now, he thought as the draconid gave an almighty roar, its Intimidate triggering the moment it came within sight of the stubborn old Delibird. The dual-type then gave a very loud roar in the red-and-white avian’s face, startling it for all of a few seconds before snapping at it with a Thunder Fang attack. Knowing that the Delibird could only use Present, the smaller bird could only squawk out in terror before hurling one Present after another.

The funny thing about this was that all of the objects it was chucking at the much-larger draconid only served to heal it up instead of harming it, and it wasn’t until what felt like the seventh Present it had chucked did the damned thing actually explode in the Salamence’s face.

However… it only served to further anger the draconid, and another snapping Thunder Fang chased the Delibird away from the sack—and here it was Alexei saw his chance. Watching as the Salamence chased the Delibird around, the draconid deliberately angled the chase so that the other avian came into the line of sight of both humans. Seeing that it was in literally dire straits, the Delibird began squawking in a panic as the Salamence reared back and made to breathe out a Flamethrower at the stubborn smaller bird—

—and he knew it was time to move.

“What, you need help now?” he asked the Delibird, eyebrows raised at the occurrence. Another series of panicked squawking came from said avian, as the Salamence changed track midway and decided to come in close with a Dragon Claw instead…

At this, a mischievous glint lit up his eyes before he turned to the other. “You think? Should we help the bird out? he asked the other, busy with the Poochyena he was walking.

Delibird ain't takin' no shit!

A 'wild' Salamence comes charging down from the skies, intent on eating said Delibird. Intimidate triggers, spooking it out before snapping right at it with a Thunder Fang.

Said Delibird starts chucking Presents at it; only after Present attempt #7 does the thing actually explode in its face... and pisses off the Salamence even more with a second Thunder Fang attack. Deliberately chases the Delibird around the sack towards Alexei and Kyle's direction, readying a Flamethrower but changing to a Dragon Claw at the last second.

Tick tock, ya damn avian.

"That's, uh, interesting."

Kyle's attention would go fully on the tool tied around the gym leader's neck, eyes peering to see if there was anything unusual to differentiate it from other common whistles. There weren't any. He supposed that was to be expected, given that they weren't really rare considering they were often used as training tools for special applications. He would have tried to obtain such object as well, but his Poochyena were already docile enough to be trained effectively through the conventional manner.

The whistle happened. Kyle's ears did not react to any sound it produced, though his Poochyena certainly did. The annoying tugging that the canine made constantly eventually stopped, turning to Alexei as the source of noise before letting his gaze wander to the Salamence. Delta the Poochyena wasn't the only one that was left at awe from the presence of the larger Pokemon, though Kyle's attention to it was more concerned about the act it will play for the following moments.

A series of misfortune seemed to befall on the Delibird, with each passing second promising its demise for the wild Pokemon's own perspective. The way it stared at them bothered Kyle the least as he trusted on the other's judgement, though when he was prompted with a conscience check, Kyle supposed that the only correct choice was the morally good one.

He would scratch the back of his head, kneeling down afterwards and unfastening the leash from his Poochyena's collar. The question was not answered with a straightforward response, but rather, a command for his Pokemon.

"Swagger."

As the Poochyena barked, calling the attention of the larger Pokemon and following it up in aggressive taunting, Kyle plucked another Pokeball from his arsenal and released yet another Dark-type, materializing the canine in between the Salamence and his other Poochyena.

"Yawn."

And so the Bite Pokemon did.

someone had a change of heart lol

Alexei knew that he had to keep up the act as part of it, and thankfully his companion was thinking along the same line he was. His eyebrows went up slightly as one of the canid Pokémon faced down the much larger ‘wild’ Salamence, and despite the curious look in his draconid’s eyes, he shook his head before staring down at the Delibird, nonverbally telling the draconid to continue trying to eat the Delibird.

Despite its much-smaller size, the Poochyena held its ground, Swaggering its way into the path of the Salamence—and despite the dual-type recognizing the attack, was still afflicted with the attack that caused its field of vision to spin around. Now that the Delibird had finally managed to catch its breath, it made a beeline towards Kyle at first—but at the last second switched directions and hid behind Alexei’s foot.

“Take a look at that,” he said to the other avian, gesturing at the second Poochyena who’d seemingly Yawned at the draconid—and while the other was ready to incinerate the Delibird with a Flamethrower, the Yawn made the other suddenly drowsy. A few more seconds later, and the large draconid landed with a thump on the ground, snoozing peacefully.

“What’ya know,” he mused with a hint of a smirk on his face in Kyle’s direction before turning back to face the Delibird. “Will you let us help you now?” he asked the stubborn avian, and waiting for a reaction, prepared to unball his Braviary.

To his relief, the Delibird finally nodded, still hanging around behind the back of his foot, which he then took his cue to summon his Braviary in a burst of red light, watching as the other avian spread his wings and turn to face his companion curiously. “I know you can lift heavy loads. You can take that, right? he asked the avian, gesturing to the large sack.

A derisive cawing noise came from the avian, who then took off and flew forward, picking up the sack by the smaller end—the part where the Delibird had been trying to carry it. With a burst of strength and an almighty cry, the Braviary then lifted the sack off the ground and into the air. “Where to?” he asked the Delibird, who then pointed further downward the mountain.

“Lavaridge?” he mused, before the Delibird insistently pointed forward again.

“Onward, then,” he said in his avian’s direction, the Braviary flying off at a reasonable height, carrying the sack between his claws. He knew that the avian could literally carry a car, that strength of his.

“Shall we get going, then?” he said, picking up the Delibird—before the other could have a chance to squawk, he then stuffed the smaller bird onto his shoulder. At the same time, he quickly fished out the Salamence’s Moon Ball, quickly recalling the slumbering draconid in a flash of red light and shrinking the marble down before the Delibird could notice, now hanging onto Alexei by his shoulder while keeping an eye on its precious cargo that another avian was carrying for him.

Oh, how humiliated the Delibird was. But even it knew when to give up.

Salamence Confused and then put to Sleep!

Delibird finally gives up and lets them take the sack; never tearing its stare away from it even as a Braviary managed to carry said sack into the air with much ease.

And now they're headed towards Lavaridge.

And another job well done for Kyle. He just had to give himself an imaginary pat in the back for managing to keep up with the savior act without actually harming the other's Pokemon. For once on his encounter with the gym leader, his neutral expression cracked into a proud smile

He'd exchange the smirk with the other trainer as he let him be the one to mediate between the two of them and the wild Pokemon. It might be better that way for the Delibird since Kyle would most likely just leave it on its own had he been unaccompanied. The fact that Alexei exerted enough effort to assist some random wild Pokemon meant that he probably would have found a way to help the Deliberd even without Kyle.

The thought never bothered him though.

Alexei quickly wrapped things up, managed to get the location of the Delibird's destination, and was ready to head straight to where it wanted to go. Kyle could only say he was impressed with how he handled things on his own, as the Poochyena trainer recalled the unruly one back to its Pokeball and folded the leash he was attached to back into a roll. "Y-Yeah, sure," he answered blankly.

"It's a good thing you didn't resort to looting the Delibird, then," he'd casually start a conversation as he followed the Braviary and its trainer to Lavaridge.
