Look, first things first he’s a Gym Leader, not a Breeder.

So when he found the little notice about two Pangoro fighting and absolutely refusing to get along with each other—which prompted the Ranch owner to ask for some serious help—he did a second take at the ad.

“Wait, what?” were the first words he said quietly, looking at the request that was displayed on the screen of his PokéGear, blinking and making sure he read it right. How can they not get along at all? He continued to himself, silently thinking of the possibility: what if both the Pangoro were male? Which would explain the possible aggressiveness?

Apparently the situation had gotten so out of hand at that point, the League had to be called in to help rein in the rampaging Pokémon and calm them down.

“Honestly…” he muttered to himself, looking around. The request had come from somewhere out in Lavaridge, and so he’d found himself here waiting for a companion so that they could help the two quarrelling Pokémon get along and potentially save the Ranch owners from going into further debt and possibly declaring bankruptcy…

Wonder who I’m going with this time… and I hope they realize that I’m not a Breeder! He thought to himself, leaning against the outside wall of the Pokémon Center, waiting for his companion to arrive.

But of course, how was he supposed to know that his companion was someone he’d already met previously?

the journey is long — yet the venture is required. inexperienced in the obligations of gym leader have him fumbling left and right. alex may be the slightest clumsy in that regard, however, he is determined.

it is what brings him here.

lavaridge is a few measly hours in the process of flight. unfortunately, his lacking for any kind of companion leaves him bound by the sea and the land. raichu is simply not powerful enough to carry the weight of his trainer — and alex does not blame him.

"we're here!" he breathes out, heavily and obviously tired. the urgency to arrive does not leave him dreading the rest of the day. although he has not an ounce of experience in the sway of breeders, his hope rests on the other, awaiting individual.

few beads of sweat disappear beneath the notion of his back—hand, straightening his posture to get a better look around the cozy town. a starkness within the rest catches his attention. eventually — there comes recognition. alex approaches, smiling gently.

"mr. ivanov?" he starts, curiosity twinkling in his eyes. it is jasp, the variant of the raichu species that comes much closer. of course, in a momentary greeting. "or should i say alex," playfulness is innocent as it had been before in the humble bar of dewford, "don't tell me you're also here for the pangoro?" he hadn't taken the other for breeder, at least, last he checked, alexei was in the same boat as him. if not a little more in tune.

Alexei had taken to messing around with his phone for a while, playing some kind of tactical mobile game that had him tilt the unit sideways so he had the benefit of a landscape in-game map. He’d gotten pretty far on the map and had just finished some part of a boss battle when he heard someone call him by his surname.

The moment he looked up, though, he did a double-take. Wait, weren’t you…? He thought idly, quickly closing out the game once he’d gotten his in-game rewards and then dropping his phone down his jacket pocket. Blinking a few times to make sure that he did have the right person on the job, he took a deep breath…

“…Alex?! That you?” he began, squinting a bit. Now, it had been some time since they last met—quite some time now, to be honest. He didn’t know what the other was up to, but here he was again. “So it’s true? You’ve moved on from being a bartender, then?” he asked, confirming if the rumors he heard through the rumor mill were true—that the one standing in front of him was a Gym Leader now, just like him.

“Well, congratulations are in order…but that can wait until we’re done with this,” he went on, pointing at the small Ranch not too far away from the edge of town.

“I don’t know where the hell the Breeders are, to be honest. I’ve got something telling me that those two Pangoro are both male. Or both female, I don’t know… what do you think?”

"ah...yes!" he says, confirming the eagerness with a simple answer, "serving others wasn't really my thing." although a sometimes well—paying job, it was also just an excuse in hiding away. as gym leader, he didn't really have a place to go in the constant eye of the public.

"there's no breeders here?" repeating the already spoken words have him reeling back in disbelief. he'd thought the other was more experienced on such a matter, of course, his prior guess had been confirmed. then again, it wasn't like alex was ready to call it quits just because the league hadn't summed up the proper help. he'd come all the way here after all.

going back would be pointless.

"you think so?" glimpsing towards the ranch at the edge of the town, he starts moving, assuming the other will follow, "its not really easy to tell them apart, is it?" he said, in reference to the pangoro having nothing distinguishable about either gender. "i'm no expert, but lets hope your guess is right!" the lips quirk upwards.

“It’s just a hunch… you know how these things go,” he began after a while as he weighed the other’s input. “Because… from what little I know of Pokémon breeding, they can get fiercely territorial… as long as they’re of the same gender. You know how two Tyrantar fight over one mountain? That bad,” he continued, stating an example he remembered thanks to reading about how Pokémon Breeding went in passing.[break][break]

“You know how it goes. Males look for females, if two males see each other they usually end up trying to kill each other. But then again sometimes both females can be pretty aggressive, too… so I might be wrong here. What do you think?” he asked his foreign namesake for their opinion. Because honestly at this point it was looking to be pretty nuts, for lack of a better term.[break][break]

Eventually they were both approached by a middle-aged couple, who were maybe slightly intimidated by the fact that not just one, but two gym leaders had shown up.[break][break]

“Right this way, please,” the woman said quietly, leading them through the town before arriving at a Ranch not too far from the gym.[break][break]

“Dear, I’ll take it from here. I’ll keep this short and simple: they’ve been fighting nonstop ever since we got them. And we don’t know what’s causing them to go off like that. If you can get them to calm down so that they can breed together without raising any incidents, hell, we’ll give you extra for your trouble!” the woman’s husband added.[break][break]

“They’ve been nothing but trouble ever since they arrived here from Kalos a few weeks ago…” the woman pleaded, almost begging the two to right the mistake.

alex nodded along — wholeheartedly agreeing to the words of the other. if that was the case, the elderly folk had been either deceived or were victims of a mix—up.

then again, if he could remember anything of use, it was that pangoro were generally bad—tempered pokemon. they often spoke with their fists rather as opposed to the more reticent kind. just alone that has him thinking.

surprisingly — from his previous and outlandish imagination, the ranch is much quieter than he pictured. listening to the aged pair, alex smiles, regarding their desperation for the situation at hand. stubborn pangoro, completely unaware was all it took in resolving the issue. especially if the other had been right.

"do you mind taking us to them?" alex requested meekly, pertaining his lighthearted approach. once brought around the back, to the large stretch, there on the far end were two obvious pangoro.

it was quite childish, from his perspective. the way they sat opposite, pouting and chewing at the greenery between their teeth. he had to wonder if it was even a violent dispute, or a simple obstinacy in getting along.

Following his namesake to the back where the two not-communicating Pangoro were, at opposite sides of the enclosure, Alexei’s eyebrows went up. Looking at his companion with a look that said ‘wait a second, this can’t be right’ on his face he then blinked, wondering how they’d be able to do this.[break][break]

What ultimately sucked was the fact that in the case of Pangoro, there was like no way of telling a male from a female apart.[break][break]

With Swoobat it was easy—the size of the heart-shaped patch on their noses gave it away; while with Gyarados it was the color of their whiskers. What he remembered seeing on Tria, his Dodrio was the fact that its three necks were black (and females had paler-colored necks) and Unfezant had the most obvious differences among all—the male looked absolutely loud and flashy while the female of its species looked rather dapper and plain compared to its counterpart.[break][break]

…no such luck for Pangoro, though.[break][break]

“Wait, let me see if this is going to work,” he muttered, quickly raising his PokéGear and pointing it at one of the Pangoro—while it did scan the barebones bits of information, he then looked at the gender where it was supposed to flash and light up—but nothing appeared on the display screen.[break][break]

“Nuts,” he grumbled, fishing through his jacket pockets and pulling out a battered-looking Moon Ball. “If what this says is true and they prefer communicating with their fists… maybe, just maybe…” he continued, his brows furrowed into thought as he sent his Riolu out and forward.[break][break]

“Vince,” he began once his Fighting-type appeared, “…can you do me a favor and try talking with that Pangoro? Like… you know… uhh… try to challenge it? And when it chases after you, have it go toward the other one on the other side of the enclosure?” he asked, pointing discreetly at the other foul-tempered Fighting-type, absolutely refusing to look at the other one close to where Alexei was.

the riolu seems the perfect choice in face of such bitter brutes. he finds himself envious of such company if only for a moment. jasp — still hovering close by makes a merry noise. persistent on also helping out, alex can't find any reason to deny his friend. a gentle smile forms.

"i'd appreciate it, jasp." twinkling blue eyes are obvious of bliss in the response. it floats a bit closer to the other, communicating some form of a plan. one to brawl the other — one to get its attention. there was much simplicity to their idea. what mattered was whether it would work or not.

once riolu would begin combat with the other, raichu, stealthy in approach charged up a small bolt. the rounded tail flickers outwards, releasing the fragment of energy in order to zap the still stubborn beast. a heavy growl resounded in startle jumps forward. pangoro would look around confused before noticing the innocent battle.

obscured by greenery — jasp lets out a sigh of relief. thankful it had not been noticed and the furrowing expression was now poised intently. although it seemed mildly irritated by the other pangoro, there was a hint of fascination in its dark eyes. meanwhile alex watches alongside the other. waiting for some form of an answer in this odd pair.

Now that the Riolu was all fired-up, he then began to yip—in a sarcastic manner, of course—at the Pangoro that he was supposed to distract. Seeing that the weird-looking Raichu was now taking care of the other, the smaller jackal ‘mon had to move quick—suddenly throwing a series of Bullet Punch attacks at the Pangoro in an attempt to cheese it off and cause it to look around![break][break]

…thankfully, with Pangoro having really short tempers they were pretty much ready to lash out at whatever was bothering them—and since his Riolu was much smaller, Alexei watched as the smaller Fighting-type then dashed around and aimed another series of Force Palm attacks, urging and literally shoving the Pangoro toward the other one—who was now in the middle of trying to figure out what had hit it—and caught sight of the other bipedal panda bear.[break][break]

“Vince, get out of there, quick!” he hissed, watching as the Pangoro that his Riolu was supposed to distract finally lashed out and hit the opposite Pangoro with a Hammer Arm attack.[break][break]

“Yeesh, talk about violent…” Alexei groaned as the Riolu quickly ducked underneath the fighting and flying fists, scrambling towards where his companion stood, watching in silent awe (borderline horror to be honest) as the two Pangoro finally began to wrestle with each other, rolling over to another direction and fists flying like it was nobody’s business.[break][break]
