He’d gone over to visit someone in Lilycove, and was running pretty late.

Well, shit, I hope they don’t take it against me that I’m going to be late! I know how pissy they’re going to get especially with punctuality… he thought as he slid into one of the open elevators in the apartment complex he was visiting.

He knew as well as the other that they didn’t like wasting time because people were always busy, busy, busy and time was of the essence.

Alexei wasn’t expecting the fact that something would happen in the near and inevitable future, so…

Jabbing at the button where the apartment was located, he waited for the doors to close so that he could get going with the appointment.

Who knew they’re also extremely impatient? He continued to himself in the back of his head, leaning against the cold, smooth wall of the elevator.

It didn’t help that there was extremely cheesy elevator music playing over the speakers, and the tune made him roll his eyes at it.

“Seriously? Valentine’s day cheesy songs?” he muttered under his breath as he resisted the urge to slap a palm to his face and drag it downward out of sheer horror.

Visiting a friend, Sorrel wasn’t particularly in any kind of hurry when he left. He’d said goodbye leisurely, and made his way to the elevator with his hands shoved in the pockets of his baggy shorts. He jammed the button a few times, yawning, and stepped into the elevator while looking at his phone. It continued looking up and Sorrel sighed. Of course it couldn’t have just been going downward.

Without warning the elevator shuddered to a halt and Sorrel glanced up, blinking in surprise. The first thing he saw was a familiar face. ”Oh hey,” he greeted to the boy he’d met on the beach. ”What are you up to-“ breaking off when the elevator jerked once, his face screwed up in a frown. ”Well-fuck. This is really irritating huh?” Glancing around the small area, he hit the 1 button a few more times, before pressing the door open button for good measure.

”Huh.” He frowned, not really feeling more than irritated. ”Well uh-hope the elevator doesn’t fall or anything? Scuffing his foot along the floor, he blinked. ”Your name was…Alex, right?”

The urge couldn’t be contained, and he eventually gave in, slapping his left palm to his face and then slowly dragging it down out of sheer insane horror as the cheesy elevator music continued to grate through the speakers. It didn’t take too long for the elevator to come to a shuddering halt and dinged, before he groaned again. Looking up at the number display above the door, he knew he was going to be really in for it…[break][break]

…that was, until he saw a familiar figure join him in the little space before the doors slid shut again. As the elevator continued to hum towards its destination, he could feel himself looking at the other, attempting to get an air of the situation—before it shuddered to an unexpected halt.[break][break]

At the same time the cheesy elevator music came to a stop (thank fuck) before hearing the other speak up about their interesting scenario. Then the lights had to go out, and he could only groan even more. “Oh, come on,” he said at last, glaring at the lights, which had fizzled out and the little space was plunged into sheer darkness.[break][break]

“Well, this is interesting… you have a light, or something?” he asked the other, squinting in the dark and hoping that the emergency lighting would come on. Sliding down to the floor, he figured, they were going to be there for a while. Might as well make the most of it, then?[break][break]

Looking up at the mention of his nickname, he nodded. “Hey there,” he added a few moments later, breaking the awkward silence.[break][break]

“Sorrel, right? Who were you visiting here?”

”I’m tellin’ you-we have the worst luck.” He grinned at the man he’d gone on a “date” with, scuffing his foot along the ground.

”Yeah-that’s my name. I was just visiting a friend. No one really like-you’d know or anything, I’m sure.” Just a childhood friend he liked to catch up with every once in awhile. ”Anyway-you got any ideas?”

“I was going to ask if you had anything smaller, like a Charmander or something… but then again that might be a bad idea, considering how fast fire can burn up air in an enclosed space like this…” he mused, turning his attention towards the ceiling of the elevator.[break][break]

He wondered if there was like a trap door they could open so that he could at least see if there was a way for them to get out of the place and fly up the elevator shaft and try to force the door open on the next floor. But then again that was a scenario that only existed in action movies… where the elevator itself would fall down to the basement and squash them like pancakes.[break][break]

No, Alexei. No, no, don’t think of that. That’s stupid, he chastised himself in the back of his mind, shaking his head slightly. “First it was the Slateport thing, and now this… what do you think’s next?” he added with a chuckle, moving forward to press the bell button that was above the series of numbers. But got no answer from it.[break][break]

“I was thinking… but it might be improbable. You know those action movies that have elevator scenes in them, right?” he asked Sorrel, turning to face him again.[break][break]

“You think this one has some kind of trap door we can force open and climb out of, see if we’re close to another floor and then try prying the door open from the inside?” he suggested. Wondering if it was even doable in the first place.

Mission: Elevator Entanglement

Erin isn't trying to eavesdrop, but it's hard not to hear a conversation going on within feet from her, in a closed space where the hard surface of the walls helps sound bounce and echo. She finds it curious, how two people could happily ignore another's presence when caught up in a conversation.

"Bad idea. Escape hatches are bolted from the outside nowadays. Trying to pry that open will only destabilize this box."

There is barely any light shining down on her inside the elevator, what with the other man's flashlight being directed away. The possibilities of them not having noticed her at all are quite high. Luckily, Erin could fix that pretty easily.

From inside her purse comes a small but potent portable flashlight. She flicks it on towards the panel on the wall, searching for a lid. Her hand finds it easily—it's right below the buttons panel. "Now this will be easier to open. Care to give me a hand?"

But what about the counterweight? Shouldn’t that be… he thought idly, knowing that boxes of this make and structure usually had a counterweight to balance itself when filled to maximum capacity.[break][break]

“Wait, what are you going to do?” he asked, standing up and looking over at the panel beneath the button display. “Do you… uhm, do you have the tools to cut a wire open?” he inquired a few moments later, scanning the panel and wondering if it really was screwed in place and they could crack it open with just their bare hands.[break][break]

Sometimes it was situations like this that made him regret not bringing along a small kit when he went out. He thought he wasn’t going to need it, but well, fate had other plans in mind today…

“So they took a letter from the media, then,” he hummed quietly, turning his attention back to the wall panel. “Don’t look at me, but older ones usually… should have them outside,” he mused, looking up at the array of buttons—but to his surprise, it wasn’t there.[break][break]

“Oh, crap,” he hissed a few moments later. “I may be able to help,” he offered, searching through his pockets and finding one he wasn’t expecting to see—and sending out his Charmeleon, Ravana, in a burst of red light.[break][break]

“Char?” the Fire-type inquired, wondering where the hell they were.[break][break]

“Rav, can you… can you hit this?” he asked, pointing at the wall panel. “Don’t just Slash at it, I need you to get the cover off…” he quickly corrected, seeing as the Fire-type was rearing up to shred the wall panel apart.[break][break]

“There we go, nice and easy…” he said, easing the Charmeleon forward as the Fire-type took aim with one of its clawed hands and then tried to scrape the panel off.[break][break]

How long would it take before it gave way and sprang open for them?

The lid slides open thanks to the charmeleon's precise work. There's a variety of buttons in this newly unlocked panel. It's not a airplane flight deck, but there's enough buttons to give a headache to someone not acquainted with how they work. Thankfully they're also labeled.

In the middle of the panel, a keyhole painted bright red stands out. She supposes most of the functions in this panel would be locked unless they had the corresponding key.

also stands out from the silver and black of the others. This one may not be functional, seeing as the cause for the elevator getting stuck was quite clearly a power outage, but they lose nothing by trying.

"Hello? We're stuck between—" she eyes the screen that should have told them their floor, "floors five and six in Lilycove Towers. Can someone help us out?"

No answer.

Erin turns her attention back to the keyhole, taunting them from its center position. "I don't suppose Rav can pick locks?" she asks, ready to call her own pokémon for help in case the charmeleon couldn't.

The Charmeleon looked at her in confusion, wondering what the hell was going on with his human’s female companion—before giving an almighty shrug at what had gone down.[break][break]

“The best he can do is smash things. It’s lucky we got him to pry this off without wrecking it,” he mused, before hearing the Fire-type let out an indignant little snort. He didn’t know that the way he’d called his Charmeleon a ‘he’ was ticking her off, but how was he supposed to know about this? Either way…[break][break]

“…do you have a… what was that Pokémon again, dang it, the one who hoards keys like it’s nobody’s business… whatever its name is on you?” he asked her a few moments later, outright gaping at the stupid bright red keyhole that was mocking them from like, a mile away.[break][break]

Well, he figured it better to ask her now, rather than later.

Erin hums, considering the man's question. "No klefkis, no." Unfortunately so. The key ring pokémon was definitely in her to-get list, though it happened to be in its lower tiers. Facial recognition and key cards had replaced traditional keys in most of her everyday routine.

"I do have this boy though." A red beam solidifies in the form of an alolan meowth. The cat's claws are long and sharp when he expands them; perfect for lock-picking.

That is, if the meowth had any experience with it to begin with.

"24K, that right there is your job," she says, pointing at the keyhole in question.

The meowth is just the right height to reach it comfortably, so with doubtful eyes it introduces one claw inside and turns. And turns. Erin stares at the meowth impatiently, which only helps make him even more nervous. Her passive-aggressive "We're counting on you," doesn't help either.

He tries going at it the other way: counterclockwise rather than clockwise. Another turn and something seems to lock in place. The meowth has a better feeling about this. He turns to his trainer. Somehow, by sheer luck, whatever it was he did got them a result.

"Wow, you actually did it. Good job, 24K." Erin offers him a pat on the head before doing her part. She wastes no time trying to consult her decision with her companion in distress. "Let's see. Push to stop first, then..."

Her eyes scan the list of buttons indicating each of their available floors. The first floor would be anyone's first guess, but the one immediately below them would probably be safer. From there, they could simply take the emergency stairs down to the first floor. She presses it.

He blinked, before realizing that he was face-to-face with a… wait, was that a Meowth?[break][break]

It didn’t look… like a normally-colored one. What the hell?[break][break]

Discreetly scanning it with his PokéGear, he then read off the information quietly, hoping that the gesture would go unnoticed—and then there it was, he heard a clicking noise. Seeing that it was on the right track, the differently-colored Meowth then managed to spring the lock and force it open—without them even using a key.[break][break]

“…should really make those keys stronger,” he mused quietly, watching as she then took a best guess with what they wanted to achieve. Maybe the auxiliary power had come back on?[break][break]

A sudden lurch indicated that yes, the little elevator cab was moving. Not too slowly, not too quickly—and then it came to a halt.[break][break]

Wait, that was it?[break][break]

“Oh, Arceus, please don’t tell me we’re—“ he was about to say before the doors slid quietly open, leading down into a dark passageway.[break][break]

Well, what do you know?[break][break]

That was hella lucky.[break][break]

“Nicely done,” he said to her, gesturing for his Charmeleon to step out first so that there was some light that punctured through the darkness.

Erin shrugs. She never notices the man's reaction to her meowth, busy as she keeps herself overlooking his performance. By the time she turns back to check on him, she only sees an expression difficult to pinpoint. Something between surprise and disappointment is what she'd choose to take it as.

Recent trends in engineering in general have taken a turn toward user friendliness and simplicity. Would there be any benefit in all these processes being designed differently, with more security locks? Probably, but then again she's pretty sure they sell master keys for fire service panels online.

Just before leaving, she presses one last button that would notify the manufacturer to send a technician as soon as possible, whenever the power returned permanently, and pushes the lid as closed as she can manage.

If someone happened to go inside the elevator before the technician made it there, they at least wouldn't bump themselves against the metallic lid. Unless they stupidly tried to walk in without looking, at any rate.

She calls her meowth back before he can trip over himself and steps outside the elevator. The flame lighting up the charmeleon's tail offers a decent enough source of illumination for them to find their way to the closest stairs.
