gengar preformed efficiently despite being disadvantaged due to honckrow's superior typing and the underlying ability of super luck. he was effectively knocked off his feet, the winged dual-type a barely comprehensible blur as it administered each blow.

"you're done, gengar," she said. "good job."

cait eyed the flying-type, noting that it had been given a burn that would eventually render it unable to battle.

'at least he managed that.'

"gen."

the ghost-type gradually faded from view, his face pulled into a tight and unhappy grimace.

'my next choice matters.'

she considered her options before deciding on one in particular.

"lycanroc!"

the bipedal pokemon unhurriedly mounted the bridge, her red-eyed gaze shifting to take in the sight of alexander and his dark-type counterpart. at her heels was a rockruff, the young pokemon brimming with excitement as his tail wagged to and fro.

"c'mere, rockruff. let your mama do her work now," cait crooned, beckoning the puppy over.

once the young creature was secured within her arms she'd nod at the medium-sized canine.

"stealth rock - stone edge."

the midnight lycanroc's forepaws flexed once she was commanded, a trap set for whatever pokemon was fated to come next before the stone edge's manifestation. a plethora of pointed rocks were thrust toward the bird with the flick of a claw, the rock-type's command of them absolute.

yet again cait recalls her pokemon while it is still able to fight. it is not his place to comment but it does leave him with questions, specifically a few about how she runs her gym. and even more than that, how she trains her pokemon. perhaps this is one of the downsides of having too many pokemon: training must be sparsely distributed.

to take gengar's place is lycanroc. the STEALTH ROCK is a pain but nothing can be done about it. alexander watches as sharp rocks get scattered across the battlefield, littering the earthy ground. honchrow sees the STONE EDGE coming but is too slow to avoid, dropping from the damage.

before honchkrow hits the ground, alexander recalls him back into his pokeball.

"okay, miss alfric. last one."

from the flash of white comes clawitzer along with a hidden WATER PULSE, not deterred by the STEALTH ROCKS that slash into him. the sudden onset of light aids in the surprise.

MEGA LAUNCHER boosts the attack as he sends another WATER PULSE flying, sharp claws pinching to control the attacks.

it was difficult to gauge the power behind the singular water pulse - but it almost immediately felled the bipedal pokemon the moment it impacted her form. she was very nearly cast into the narrow river which bordered the battlefield, the canine scrambling to gain purchase as her claws dug into stone. she was positively drenched, her coat soaked through and heavy as she managed to recover within the time allotted.

cait was rightfully impressed by the rock-type's ability to endure the bolstered strike - but she feared she wouldn't be able to tank another.

'we may have to try out-maneuvering it.'

unwilling to grant alexander an easy victory, she decided to rely upon a hastily put together strategy.

"try getting onto its claw," cait said. "the big one."

the canine gave herself a shake, sucked in a harsh breath, bared her teeth and lunged forward; intending to close the distance between herself and the water-type.

cait is correct in her choice to send her lycanroc after clawitzer's large claw. it is the main source that powers their attacks and that much is no different with alexander's. but he is no ordinary trainer, and surely cait has realized that by now.

clawitzer watches as the lycanroc charges forward with ferocious intent, its feet pushing off the ground as it soars across the air and onto his claw. he allows it to.

the added weight is tough to hold but clawitzer shifts his entire weight, turning ever so slightly before slamming his claw into the ground for a SMACK DOWN. it's not effective against the lycanroc, but the WATER PULSE that follows is.

this should be the end of the battle.

lycanroc digs her claws into the smooth carapace of her foe and manages a timely scramble to avoid the following attacks - though the attempt is a rushed one. the rock-type treats the beast as though it is a makeshift obstacle, reliably avoiding the worst of the smack down and the following burst of water by maintaining an unpredictable pattern of movement.

"get behind it and use crunch!"

the canine opens her maw that is filled with pointed ivory wide once she is properly positioned, her teeth aiming to mercilessly dig into the creature's much smaller body.

huh. maybe not.

the lycanroc is agile in its movements and manages to avoid both attacks, practically leaping over clawitzer. the water-type cannot turn in time to avoid being CRUNCHED down on. lycanroc's sharp fangs look to pierce through his shell but it won't be that easy.

with clawitzer's small body now in the tight hold of lycanroc's mouth, the only option is to aim his fist downwards before sending an AURA SPHERE against the ground.

the force lifts him up into the air, hopefully carrying the lycanroc with him only for him to turn, shifting his weight so his claw carries them down for a SMACK DOWN.

the superior weight of the water-type is what effectively snuffs out what remains of her lycanroc's energy, the pokemon having been robbed of her consciousness the moment she was forcefully slammed back onto the field.

'i'm impressed,' she thought, taken slightly aback by the impromptu strategy.

her eyebrows rose high upon her forehead as rockruff wriggled unhappily within her arms. she'd release him to worry over his mother before she had the pair escorted off the field, her psychic-types helping them on their way.

"looks like you've won, mister stone."

cait's voice remained outwardly neutral, a polite smile taking shape as she addressed the man.

"i'll have one of my pokemon retrieve a badge for you - a moment, please."

excitement fills the gentle clawitzer and he shows it by happily snapping his large claw, creating snip snap sounds that is only complimented by what appears to be a smile. he floats on back over to alexander, who shows his appreciation through multiple pats on his head.

"good boy."

when the words leave alexander's mouth, he almost flinches. maybe he's been spending too much time with dog boy kyle lopez.

"it was a close battle. your pokemon put up a good fight."

alexander returns the smile.

"thank you. and thank you for the battle. you have a lovely gym."

the decorations that adorn it give it a theme that is quite unforgettable. for new trainers walking in here they are sure to leave with a sense of awe. for alexander, that sensation has long grown out of him, now too caught up in affairs to fully appreciate the beauty of it.

"how has running the gym been?"

her hypno unhurriedly made her way to her mistress with the precious item within her grasp.

"thank you, hypno," she said.

the young woman surrendered her badge, her smile broadening out a little as she did so.

'i've handed out nearly ten of these now,' she thought.

"it's been fun - well - the gym part has, at least. this place is its own self-contained ecosystem," she said. "my own personal forest. and it's positively thriving."

her eyes brightened as she smiled fondly at the gym that had been painstakingly re-purposed.

'let's just hope i can keep it.'

the mere thought of losing it made for an extraordinarily painful one. though she'd much rather she'd be the only one who suffered through such a terrible misfortune.

'stormy,' she thought. 'i need to - '

"and you, mister stone? how's rustboro?"

accepting the gym badge from her, he nods his gratitude as he looks down to examine the green metal. it has a lovely design that caters to her theme. he palms it before keeping it safe in his pocket.

"i am glad to hear it. i hope it continues to, truly."

when the topic shifts to rustboro a shift in the air threatens to take place. but he won't let it. he's spent too many conversations mellowing on the past. this is not one of those times.

"all is well in rustboro. people felt unsafe for moments but they seem to be reassured for now. i am doing all that i can to assure that."

it hasn't been easy, but he has been trying.

"the support has been appreciated. speaking of, i never knew you were acquainted with stormy. friends, actually! she told me to say hi."

"i nearly forgot you two were a thing."

which was a damned shame, really. she'd have happily snatched up either if granted the opportunity; both possessing qualities that she considered to be immensely attractive.

"i promised to pay her a visit," she continued, smiling sheepishly. "but i've been so busy lately that i ended up not going at all."

such is life, the gym leader supposed.

"let's hope she isn't too peeved at me for breaking that promise."

her hypno remained for the sole purpose of curiously eyeing alexander, the psychic-type appearing to be genuinely intrigued by the man.

"oh - this is hypno. she takes care of the gym whenever i'm out," cait introduced, her gaze sliding toward the pokemon. "i'd be completely lost without her."

the woman paused for a moment before she presented alexander with a single offering.

"would you be interested in a spot of tea? i could have a table brought out so we can sit and chat for a short while before you leave. there are a few questions i'd like to ask."

a thing. he almost laughs. "i am in the same boat. have not quite found the time to yet." which is a shame because alexander knows that the people of lavaridge have taken a liking to her appointment as their leader. he will visit, for sure, he's just not so sure when.

"i am sure she will be fine."

it's not until cait points it out does alexander notice how the hypno had been staring at him intriguingly. he bows his head slightly to be polite but doesn't stare back, perhaps afraid of falling into a hypnosis of some kind.

"tea sounds lovely."

tea at the expense of a few questions; he's not sure what to think of it. what could cait possibly have to ask him that she hasn't? the thought encompasses him as they make their way over to the side.

a small and round wooden table and two chairs were soon placed in the middle of the stone field but the pair would be made to wait on the tea; hypno having trotted off to tend to it.

"it shouldn't take long. my pokemon know what they're doing," she reassured, gesturing toward the furnishings. "take a seat, mister stone."

cait settled with an air of grace about her, the smile she presently wore appearing genuine. though there was a hint of something within her expression that foretold of the seriousness that would soon be introduced into their conversation.

"i suppose i fibbed a little," she admitted, appearing sheepish. "i've a favor to ask, actually. i've plans - you see - but there's a bit of a... snag that needs to be dealt with before i can really get them underway."

as the small and round wooden table and chairs are laid out in front of them, alexander cannot help but look on in awe at the ecosystem cait has created in his contained environment. he looks around once more, this time really taking his time to appreciate the intricacies that must have gone into this.

taking a seat across her, he waits in anticipation as he listens to her speak.

"a snag?"

cait speak of plans that he has no knowledge of, which means it must have been fairly tight-lipped, perhaps even kept to herself. the seriousness in her demeanor is noticed and so he reflects the same, leaning forward slightly as he gestures with his hand.

"what plans do you have, miss alfric?"

cait smiled as alexander leaned closer, the man obviously eager to hear of her plan.

"it's nothing particularly fancy nor exciting. but it's still a matter of immense importance."

two porcelain cups were placed before the pair, steam rising from their heated contents in thin wisps. the tea was chamomile, the ingredients originating from cait's personal garden.

"due to rocket's presence at our border i intend to transition the civilian population out of the city of mauville. due to the immense lost of life of non-combatants that occurred at slateport i've managed to convince the vast majority to relocate despite a decent amount of push back. and most were convinced to rent out their properties to the league in exchanged for charging at an increased rate - which is a slight strain on our overall budget, i'll admit."

she daintily sipped at her drink and nodded her approval at her beloved hypno, the white-maned creature presently situated at her mistress's side; her pinprick gaze fixed upon alexander.

"since we've a mass migration on our hands i'd like to request that a sizable chunk of my citizens be granted temporary and free housing in the city of rustboro for no less than several months while they locate new homes for themselves. i understand that your city's funds will dwindle as a direct result and there might be some civil unrest involved but removing those whom are the most vulnerable is paramount. don't you agree, mister stone?"
