What was it with some of the newer gyms—

They didn’t have non-trad challenges?

This made things infinitely more complicated for him, because let’s face it, he’s much more of a non-traditional ‘battler’ when it came to getting his badges.

Funnily enough, though, he already had eight of them, and knew that there would be more added to his collection.

(It would never be anything like kyle lopez’s though, that man was just too much!)

“Funny, wasn’t this one of those minor Gyms before…” he mused to himself as he swapped out his team—normally he’d be packing Ro and Alpha, but today he decided to try something different.

The question now was, who was going to Mega-evolve first if shit went down to the wire—would it be Lynette, or Gareth?

Who knew?

Moment he’d arrived he made his way straight to the front desk to inquire where the Gym Leader was.

Little did he know that they were a familiar face…

“Mamma mia, did you really have to call me out like that?” he began with a cackle. There… there was a reason why he liked things more relaxed within the Rangers per se.

Titles were too stuffy and could die in a burning hole.

‘Oh so that’s your—’

‘Shut up, as if you don’t know!’ he all but screamed at the snarky voice in the back of his mind, who retorted with this absolutely evil cackle.

“I came by here, for one reason. I mean, should be kinda obvious.”

Even if he had to pull through the strictly traditional-only set-up, he was here to test himself. To see how much he could coordinate under a ‘controlled’ setting, as opposed to how things were out in the field—unpredictability was something he rather excelled in.

(Why did he have such a chaotic bend, then?)

“Are you gonna make this hard for me?” he added with a bit of a laugh afterward.

“You know, getting the badge or something.”

he wonders just how capable the head ranger actually is in battles. he's never had the opportunity to fight alongside lars nor has he done any research. all he knows is that lars is articuno's chosen.[break][break]

but articuno won't be battling today.[break][break]

Now, if he’d planned this through a little better he would’ve brought at least two of his Ice-types, however the other didn’t need to know something he’d preferred to be kept under wraps.

“Rain,” he decided. At least the only things he would have to potentially handle would be either Hurricane or Thunder; unlike with the sand—where there were the potential of entry hazards and chip damage, or hail. Well, with hail all his Pokémon companions were immune to the Freeze condition, but he wasn’t sure if that also included the chip damage from the Mirage’s preferred weather.

“Hope you’re ready to get wet,” he cracked a few moments later, grin on his face as he shook out the hood of his jacket and prepared to throw it up once the controlled ‘weather’ came into play.

He couldn’t help but fucking snicker at the proclamation—why did that sound so dirty?!

It made him laugh like fuck, though.

“Thanks for the laugh!” he teased back, unable to hold the guffaw in because… was his mind really that far gone it was already in the fucking gutter?

His attention was drawn to the battlefield afterward, though.

The moment the water started coming down, he had approximately half a second before it turned torrential—but then again this was how he wanted it to be!

Two clicks later, a Gardevoir and a Gallade hit the field, both ready to scrap the ever-living fuck out of the Politoed and Seaking. This was going to get interesting.

“Lyn, you remember that new thing we got? Let’s try it out. Gareth, get ready. I’m counting on you both, so give ‘im a good show!”

The knightly Gallade then got ready with a Swords Dance, crossing his blade-like arms in the process. Meanwhile, the Gardevoir’s Trace ability locked onto the Seaking—a worthy choice, considering what was coming next before she moved.

A very light tap on the ground and the field turned some weird shade of undulating purple-pink—not a Misty Terrain but a Psychic Terrain.

Maybe he’d messed up, but the fact of the matter was—this terrain would serve as something—

Before said Gardevoir opened fire on the Politoed with Expanding Force! While Lars didn’t have one of his own, he knew how…troublesome…they could get, considering he’d encountered a bunch of them in the wild while on search-and-rescue missions in torrential downpours around Eastern Hoenn.

The Gallade followed after with a Shadow Sneak—on the Seaking. While it didn’t function as it did with Ghost-types (because the ghostie version of Shadow Sneak involved the Pokémon literally sinking into the shadows) the move would be effective, just not as potent as it normally would be since Gallade didn’t have the Ghost-type after all.

• Gardevoir & Gallade are out on the field!
• Gallade used Swords Dance while Gardevoir set up with a Psychic Terrain!
• (At the same time, Gardevoir’s Trace picked up Seaking’s Swift Swim ability)
• Gardevoir used Expanding Force on the Politoed afterward! Expanding Force hits all opposing Pokémon on Cian’s side of the field!
• Gallade used Shadow Sneak on Seaking!
• Psychic Terrain is in effect! (1 / 5)

"ready up, team! head ranger anderson is about to give us a fight!"[break][break]

his pokemon turn back to quickly give cian a salute (no idea why as he's never taught nor trained them to do as much) before focusing on the battle at hand. before they know it, a PSYCHIC TERRAIN materializes beneath them.[break][break]

three castform float up into the air to summon their RAIN DANCE. rain starts to pour, flooding the battlefield not long after.[break][break]

the very same droplets of rain halt mid-air as EXPANDING FORCE warps the fabric of space and time. when it expands, the energy is enough to knock the politoed back, though seaking's SWIFT SWIM activates in time to allow it to propel forward to meet the SHADOW SNEAKING gallade.[break][break]

its MEGAHORN looks to counter whatever gallade throws at it, and if it doesn't, its SUPERSONIC pulses a moment later regardless.[break][break]

meanwhile, after recovering from the EXPANDING FORCE, politoed flexes its SWAGGER at the gardevoir only to spit out a HYDRO PUMP at it after.[break][break]

“Move!” was the only thing he would shout over the torrential downpour.

The Gallade, noting that there were several incoming attacks, knew he had to defend, but against which one?

A shimmering Protective screen would shimmer into existence for the briefest of seconds, blocking against the incoming Megahorn but shattering as the second attack impacted it—however with a deft turn to one side, aforementioned Gallade then whirled around and attempted a sideswiping Drain Punch on the Seaking, if but to chip away slowly but surely at his opponent’s health.

On Lynette’s end…

The briefest of a ‘giggling’ gesture would catch the Politoed’s eye as she Teleported out of the Swaggering gesture, only to reappear a short distance away with a sudden burst of Psychic energy aimed at the amphibious Pokémon.

Well, he’d have to try and limit the use of Teleport because that was a bit of cheating, but you did what you had to!

“Keep it up, you two, you’re doing great so far!” he called to the two Pokémon on his side of the field as they awaited the next move.

• Gardevoir & Gallade are out on the field!
• Gallade used Protect to block the Megahorn attack before pivoting sideways and attempting to slam in with a Drain Punch on the Seaking!
• Gardevoir used Teleport before Swagger landed, and reappeared a short distance away before lobbing a Psychic bomb of energy at the Politoed! (Swift Swim [Trace’d] ability is in play)
• Psychic Terrain is in effect! (2 / 5)
