[attr="class","text"] Rook’s face broke into a smile and Lam grinned in turn, triumphant at managing to override his pout so easily. “Mmm…not luck. Just innate.” He pressed another quick peck against one reddened cheek before offering Bubblegum back to his rightful trainer. Something the fuecoco was eager for, given his sudden, furious wiggles despite previously trying to vy for Lam’s undivided attention.[break][break]

He watched as a braxien traipsed by, oversized ears twitching in their direction but otherwise ignoring them. Lam was too busy patting the heads of the cramorants to bother with the fox as they waddled back over to him with pleased honks. One spit up the charizard’s pokeball—now slimy, into his hand after having carried it over.[break][break]

Lam grimaced as he pocketed it, but glanced over at Rook with curiosity at his remark. “You think so? Dunno if it’s talent so much as the fact that these two prefer to be out together, so it makes sense. Y’know?” After all, was there anything really all that special about doubles?

One spit-slathered pokeball deposited into Lam's hand and Rook couldn't suppress the giggle the slipped out. "Extra moist." He slipped over to Lam, holding his hand before walking on. The heat was still a little unbearable but he'd gotten the rest he needed to keep going on their little walk. At least for now.

"Seriously though, I mean... maybe but it's still impressive. Most people wouldn't know how well they work together and even then, you've still come a long way in battling." It wasn't a skill that Rook had, not really. He'd tried his fair share of battles and gyms. He even had a badge, but it had never felt like something he truly enjoyed doing. Not like Lam, at least.

"You been doing a lot of gyms though, lately." Maybe too many, but Rook wouldn't fault him for that. He had drive and that was super impressive and attractive even.

[attr="class","text"] Lam’s expression dissolved into exaggerated, comedic distaste at the words extra moist. “Nasty.” He shoved the ball in his bag and wiped his palm on his pants to rid himself of the sensation before Rook took his hand and pulled him onward to resume the hike.[break][break]

He couldn’t help but to puff up with pride at the praise his partner gave—smile stretching wider into a toothy beam. “I just…really like it. It’s way more fun than the art gallery.” Not that he’d stopped caring about painting, but well, he didn’t even get to do much of that when he was working there. It’d sapped all the life out of his creativity.[break][break]

A sheepish laugh slipped loose and he looked down at his feet as they continued climbing upward. “Ah, yeah that was…kinda poor planning on my part. Some had a waitlist and I wasn’t really expecting them all to bump me up at the same time.” Kind of exhausting, but it had been fun, hadn't it? Participating, spending time picking the pairs of Pokémon based on who would work best together in which gym. And—[break][break]

“It also kind of helps…with everything that happened.” Both a distraction, and a means to improve. So he wouldn’t feel so helpless agai. Like he’d felt with Ginger.[break][break]

His hand squeezed Rook’s a little tighter as he looked back over, smile diminished, but still there. It felt awkward and clumsy to admit his weak spots and the fears that still loomed over his shoulder some days. But Rook had made it easier to talk about, to allow himself someone to depend on and confide in.

Rook grinned at that response, leaning forward to whisper another "Mooiissttt" into his ear before dashing away with a giggle. "It suits you, the battling, I mean." He hadn't seen Lam look so eager about doing something. At least, with the gallery, it was enjoyable but he was taken for granted. Now, with this new pursuit, people would be stupid to overlook his obvious skills.

That optimism wasn't just because he was his boyfriend, of course. That didn't matter in this instance, he could see Lam's skill regardless. Even if maybe he was a little motivated by love to champion him. "Yeah well... still try and take some time for yourself." It made sense, of course, eagerness worked that way. He just didn't want Lam to burn out or become disillusioned with his goal by making it into a career.

Still, there was the cloud of darkness that they couldn't ignore. That was also a worry of Rook's, for good reason in his opinion. "I know." He squeezed his hand back, leaning over to smooch him on the cheek. "I'm really proud of you, you know?"

The repeated word drew a shudder of distaste from him, and his nose wrinkled up as he looked at Rook, who was scurrying away out of reach. “I’ll get you back for that. When you least expect it, expect it.” It was a half-hearted threat at best, though.[break][break]
“You think so? Matias thinks I’m already at the level of a gym leader,” he mentioned the outcome of a recent conversation with the elite four member. His eyes darted toward Rook curiously, wondering what the reaction would be. He understood his boyfriend’s concern, though. Especially with that had happened in April, and the pall it had cast on him for a little while afterward.[break][break]
“I will, though, I promise.” A smile tugged at his mouth, widening as he fixed it on Rook. “Maybe we can have a beeeeach day.” His tone was a bit wheedling, given Rook’s typical avoidance of excessive contact with sand. But the ability to go for a swim should trump that, surely.[break][break]
A screech interrupted his reply, though it didn’t seem to be a frightened sound. Twisting, it was hard to miss the massive skeledirge that had lumbered into the open. And of course, there was an elated Bubblegum, barreling toward it at an impressive pace for the normally clumsy fueccoco.[break][break]
With a honk, Orange Crush pelted the skeledirge with a dousing HYDRO PUMP as Lam chucked a pokeball in an attempt to quell the massive croc before Bubblegum ran full tilt into its open mouth. “Oop, not your mama, little dude.”

"I agree, I think you'd make a great gym leader." Rook beamed at that. Though, maybe he was a little biased as there was nothing that Lam couldn't do in his opinion (except do anything bad). His belief in Lam was far higher than his belief in himself, which might have been a problem in most contexts. He just wasn't sure what he wanted to do with himself and wasn't sure he'd ever really know.

"I'd like that, can go swimming." Though he always did get a nasty sunburn, no matter how much sunscreen he applied. Even then, a beach day sounded nice.

Rook's eyes drew to a crobat, oblivious to the events that Bubblegum was currently causing behind him. Queenie knocked the bat out of the sky with a well-place CRUNCH and Rook followed up with a lobbed pokeball. Only to turn around to see that Bubblegum was causing a bit of a scene, throwing quite the tantrum over the bit croc daddy that Lam was catching. "Is he trying to find a new family?"

His face split in a grin, sunny and bright, as he nudged affectionately at his partner. “There's a position open in Lilycove, I was thinking, you know, it could be good. Stable.” Better income than he was making off just winning matches.[break][break]

His head bobbed up and down, “Yeah, and we can get floaties…bring lunch and stuff. Make a proper day of it.” Of course, the line of conversation was quickly derailed by Bubblegum, who seemed quite peeved that the Skeledirge had disappeared into a pokeball. “I think he thought it was his papa.” He laughed—there was no way. He’d caught the shiny fueccoco in the safari zone. That was too far.[break][break]

Stopping to pick up the pokeball, Lam paused. “Oh, look! We’re almost at the to—“ He had been pointing to where the incline of their hike seemed to crest up ahead and drop away as the ground leveled out. But his arm veered upward, his point moving to a red and gray blur overhead. “Bird!”[break][break]

Pepsi Blue aimed, a jettisoned WATER GUN shooting straight at the fletchinder, followed by a carefully aimed nest ball. Grinning, he turned to Rook again. “At the top,” he reiterated.

"Of course I do." He laughed at that, because the question was ludicrous. How could Lam not see that capability. Regardless of that, Rook would always see his potential and believe in it.

"Lilycove," He pondered on the place. It sounded nice, sunny. The kind of place people vacationed or dreamed of staying, right on the beach. "Sounds like your dream, warm beach and lots of birds." The sea kind, which were Rook's least favorite kind of bird, but there was water. Rook like swimming so maybe that'd make up for the heat.

Bubblegum had calmed down, clearly disappointed that his papa had vanished.

Of course, Lam was distracted by another bird, which he probably had a million of. It was cute though, that he still got excited regardless of how many he'd seen before.

He leaned up so that he could press a few playful, pecking kisses against Rook’s jaw.[break][break]
The other was right, of course. He did love Lilycove. It reminded him of home, he felt comfortable there. But that didn’t mean it was a guarantee.[break][break]
“Well sure, but,” he began with a quiet huff of laughter. His shoulder bumped into Rook’s affectionately as he sought out his partner’s hand. “I don’t want to do what’s just my dream, y’know.” His fingers squeezed Rook’s softly. “It should be your dream being considered just as much as mine.”[break][break]
He didn’t want to just up and go somewhere that Rook wouldn’t like as much, or not feel a part of. His life with the other wasn’t in question–he was the most important part. What kind of boyfriend would he be if he didn’t believe in Rook just as much?[break][break]
Laughing, he swung their hands up in a show of success. “We did it! Look at that.” To mark his success, he aimed a pokeball at the first unsuspecting pokemon he spotted–a hapless little croagunk.[break][break]
“Going back down is gonna be hella easier.”
