Theo did not look ready to leave the fishing game, and for a moment, Yumi wondered if she'd committed a grievous error in her assumption. But then he stood, handed away his rod, and gestured for them to continue through the carnival.[break][break]

"One day, yes. But first I have to put my name out there. Once my collections feature on runways and at fashion shows, rivaling giants like the House of Glaus, I'll look into the logistics of opening a store of my own."[break][break]

Yumi spoke with an avid passion that lit up her eyes and widened the smile on her face. For a moment, she forgot she was speaking with a Rocket Underboss.[break][break]

"But for now, the casino commands more of my attention." Her enthusiasm tempered to a cool confidence.[break][break]

Then, because she could not help her curiosity, she asked Theo, "When you were young, is this how you imagined your future, Mr. Beckett?"

A fisherman? Yumi almost laughed, but then again, Theo had appeared content to sit at the Magikarp game. She tried to imagine him as a fisherman instead of a Team Rocket underboss, complete with vest and bucket hat.[break][break]

She couldn't help the way the corner of her mouth curled in amusement. Briefly, she wondered where the line was between an executive and an underboss.[break][break]

he finds it difficult to part with his catches, having grown fond of them, which is an odd thing for an underboss to admit. in fact, this is the most enthused he's sounded today.

"not many understand the need for balance. our lives cannot solely be devoted to the cause of team rocket. doing so would only set us down the path of an eventual burnout."

She assumed he had countless conversations like theirs with other Rockets, talking about their lives and goals. How many conversations did he have where he got to talk about his own?[break][break]

The woman nodded slowly as she absorbed his advice.[break][break]

"Is that the kind of future you envision for us? One where members of our organization can do our work without burning out from the pressure and stress?" she wondered. "Where we can fish or design clothes in peace, in our well-earned free time?"

Yumi fell into a contemplative silence. She watched Theo from the corner of her eye as if seeing him for the first time—not as a frightening underboss with an air of detached mystery around him, but as a man who had been working tirelessly for a better future.[break][break]

That was the difference between them, she realized: he had a bigger picture in mind, while she remained focus on her own selfish desires.[break][break]

Perhaps such selfishness was a trait she would shed with age. Or perhaps she and Theo were just fundamentally different people.[break][break]

Yumi did not answer Theo's question. She knew any answer she could give would be premature, so she chewed on it mentally. Team Rocket had conquered Kanto and tried, but failed, to conquer Johto.[break][break]

While the crime syndicate reconsidered its approach to the latter, it had turned its sights upon Hoenn. That was why leaders like Theo were there: to lead the conquest of Hoenn.[break][break]

But would Kanto and Hoenn be enough? Would the Boss of Team Rocket remain unsatisfied until he ruled the entire world?[break][break]

"You've given me a lot to think about, Mr. Beckett," Yumi said at last. "I'm afraid I've taken up too much of your time, but I appreciate the company."[break][break]

The smile that crossed her face was pleasant, a rare sight devoid of any teasing or mockery.[break][break]

"I would love to see your private fish collection, if you wouldn't mind."
