How did he get roped into this? Sitting at a lost and found station, watching over a whole pile of items returned by good samaritans and the occasional lost kid or two. It had started with that poor carny, hadn't it? They had clearly seemed tired but their replacement hadn't showed up. And so he had offered to be a stand-in until the next person came, his ranger credentials seemingly being more than enough for them to agree.[break][break]

How soon he comes to regret it. Time slow blends into a mess of sounds and shapes as various worried fairgoers drop by to find their items or place some missing report. Hell, he's even had to argue with some shady teen attempting to claim a wallet that wasn't theirs.[break][break]

Sighing, he tries to ignore the headache brought on by the incessant crying of kids, letting Na'au work her magic in trying to soothe them. They sure do have some powerful lungs, he'll give them that much. If only he didn't have to watch over them, he could be out there looking for some guy skipping out on his duties.[break][break]

Perhaps, he could pay a visit to the administration office later and claim their pay.

Fate worked in strange ways, didn’t it?

For once, for bloody once Lars had a day off to himself. Rather than spending it at home (like most days) or with the few people he knew (they were all busy) he decided to drop by the Funtasia faire…

And immediately ran into a problem: someone was running late for work, apparently! He approached the carny who looked rather lost (not to mention wet behind the ears, a total and complete newbie) before realizing that they’d gotten themselves lost first day on the job to boot.

“Eh, no big, lemme get you to the booth where you have to go.”

Bonus points of being a beanpole, he immediately spotted the lost and found station where they were supposed to be headed; him going through the crowd and making sure his companion was able to keep up.

In no time, they’d reached the lost and found booth only for Lars to blink and do a double take at the person who was behind the booth—

“Hey, Emmett. How’d you end up there?” he asked the other Ranger, a hint of bemusement on his face as the actual carny who was supposed to be on duty entered the booth and apologized a thousand times over.

A familiar voice derails his train of thoughts, ocean eyes flicking up over the counter to see a rather amused grin. And he'll return a sly grin of his own, leaning over the desk and resting a cheek upon an open palm.[break][break]

"I got lost, clearly." He drawls, waving off the carny's apologies. He's still collecting that payment anyways. "Finally come to pick me up or something?"

“I’m here to rescue you, c’mon, let’s get you outta there,” he nodded as he noted the same expression on the other’s face.

He could totally tell the other was planning something, however he let it slide.

“C’mon, I got you some food,” he added as he gestured to the paper bag that had some carnival food he’d picked up (mostly sandwiches with a small bottled water, although there was a small bag of popcorn as well) before handing it over to him.

“I’ll get my food later, this’s yours.”

And he'll offer another to Na'au before she begins making puppy dog eyes at him, trying his best to fall in step with Laurence Anderson despite the ruler's difference in height. “Would you rather be stuck with all the crying kids?” he asked him back, because from the looks of things, the fair was going to be headed towards the next location soon and they had little time to hit… all the attractions that were available.

He quirked his lips into a knowing smile, before pulling something out of his pocket—a rice ball that had a mystery stuffing inside it. (He hoped it wasn’t something he was allergic to.)

“There was this new booth that set up over there,” he tilted his head in the direction he came from, “that had spam sandwiches and all the other snacks that Alolans like, so, y’know, I grabbed it for you.”

(Yes, he paid attention to that detail.)

While he unwrapped the rice ball, he wondered if the Magikarp Fishing booth nearby had a long line.

“You doing anything today asides from getting roped to help out at the lost and found booth?”

He trailed off, before taking a bite into the rice ball and not immediately recoiling (because the filling was beef) he continued to chow down until less than half the rice ball remained.

“Someone told me to not work too much,” he continued with an extremely pointed eye roll. (Love you fam ollie morales!)

After he demolished the rice ball, he turned to face the other.

“Tell me… do I look like my frown lines are showing too much?”

Hearing it from ollie morales was bad enough, but to get it from someone else only made it even all the more obvious!

“That bad, huh?” he hummed as he shuffled around in his pocket and pulled out… huh. When did he pick up a Rage Candy Bar?

He flipped it over just to check the expiry date—thankfully the candy bar itself was new, so at least he wasn’t going to eat anything expired. Shrugging, he stripped the wrapper off and took a bite.

After a few moments, he couldn’t help but ask. He was curious, after all.

“What made you choose Hoenn over Alola?”

"New horizons, I guess?" It's one way to put it. The more long-winded way is that he just wanted an excuse not to be in charge of so many duties back home. Being relied upon was both a blessing and a curse. "I wanted to travel around while I still could. Ended up sticking in Hoenn longer than expected."

He couldn’t help but cackle quietly as he worked his way through the Rage Candy Bar that he was taking slow bites out of. The nutty flavor made him stop for a few moments, before thankfully—he checked the wrapper and there were no almonds in it.

“While you still could?” he asked, pulling on that little string and hopefully managing to unravel it. He wondered if there was an underlying reason behind it.

Rather than asking too much, he would wait for the other to answer. He didn’t want to come off as too pushy, after all.

There was this unknowing grin that flashed on his face for a few moments. The other man’s train of thought reminded him of how, years ago, he’d left this region and traveled to Alto Mare all the way in Johto…

Maybe they had a little more in common than he’d originally thought.

Taking a rough guess at the other’s age, he hummed quietly.

“Fair enough, we all get to that part of life at some point… I went to Alto Mare to find myself before coming back here. It’s always a journey of discovery.”

Finishing off the Rage Candy Bar, he then pocketed the wrapper to dispose of later.

“You think you’ve found what you’re looking for out here in Hoenn?”
