the static on marcus' earpiece eventually clears out. the quality is a bit worse than the crisp clear radio communications that the people he would be spying on were experiencing, but the words were decipherable still.

a voice that people who watch mainstream hoenn can be recognized.

"-so yeah, lunch is late. there's already a lot of complaining around. can you do something about it?"

unbeknown to the person tapping into the conversation, it was the caller that instigated the whining and complaining on the other side. most didn't care at all, especially since there's bigger things to worry about.

the voice on the other side of the line seemed frazzled. it's normal, given that an issue that shouldn't be one is made into one.

"s-sir, i don't think we can share any more information about the cause of your problem."

"huh? why is that?"

"um, i can't tell."

or rather, the agent from the call center wasn't sure how to approach the situation. the frequency was compromised, and they weren't sure if revealing that they are aware was better or not.

being compromised was the least of kyle's problems. keeping secrets was a joke at this point, and kyle doesn't seem to take it seriously as others would have.

he expects hellfire to rain down once his signal is traced, but instead the league continues to talk. it feels like psychological warfare, somehow, to listen to kyle lopez continue on about lackadaisical faction swapping, but he prefers it over the champion finding his location and pulling up on him. [break][break]but — every time? he lingers on the statement too long.[break][break]"reroute and send out a distress signal from someone else's line."[break][break]blissful silence, interspersed with the occasional and less pleasant dial-up tone his porygon makes, follows.[break][break] the normal-type verges on overheating a few times, but eventually taps into someone else. maybe they're trying to get past an obstacle inside the cave, or maybe they're one of the officers succumbing to mid-afternoon hanger — either way, their comms begin to ping for help.

the source signal changes. the champion's ridicule of circumstances distracts the operator from the other line to notice at that moment, as their chitchat lasts for a few more exchanges before they were made aware of the rerouting.

"sir, i think we lost them."

"them?"

"sir, the rockets that tapped in the frequency..."

"oh, that's too bad."

"we found someone else though."

"send a signal. let's see if we can send a message back."

they're exposing themselves at this point, but kyle thinks it shouldn't matter all too much. with too many literary tools the other side can exploit for the narrative, they'll be able to accomplish anything should they want to anyways.
