BACKSTORY
Zata Nefertum grew up in the small town of Oldale with his mother and older brother, Raul. His father passed away when he was at a very young age and so he did not have any memories of him. When asked about it his mother would always dismiss and ignore it. After his father's death, his mother grew depressed, her grief brought in despair. Raul would tell him stories of his father, how he was a great Ranger and would help anyone in need, and that one day he would be one too. Zata could see how much his brother admired their father.
Soon, the drinking started. Their mother would always be too drunk to take care of herself and her children. Raul became the caretaker of the house, looking after both his mother and young sibling. Finding odd jobs to put food on the table and the electricity running. Zata would hear bickering, screaming and fighting behind closed doors. Their mother was abusive, but being protective Raul would endure it for the two of them.
When Raul reached a certain age, he left to pursue his dreams and move away from the toxic environment in the household. Leaving behind Zata as well to be with their drunkard mother. Zata learned quick and his heart hardened and shelled, turning cold as ice. Allowing him to endure whatever it was his mother and the world would throw at him. He distanced and isolated himself from everything and everyone. A hollow husk performing mundane duties to keep its body alive.
That was until his mother told him the news of Raul's passing. She broke down in tears and grieved evermore. But for Zata, who had his heart frozen solid, it took him a while for the realization and emotions to dawn onto him. When it did, he rummaged through his brother's old stuffs. That was when he found six Pokeballs; And a Yamper would convince him to follow his heart to uncover the truth.

The Truth: During the Ultra Beast War, Raul was stationed at the Lilycove Warfront. Unlike the nightmares Zata was having of his brother being eaten alive by the Megalopolans, Raul died from the massive flood caused by a Kyogre. His body lost in the depths of the ocean. Raul fell into a wormhole and was trapped in the Ultra Wilds. In the aftermath of the war, Raul was considered missing and presumed dead. This news was relayed to their mother, but she was in denial. Refusing to lose another loved one while having no body to bury and no grave she could visit. She crafted a story to her own liking, in the dead of the night she dug a grave, and prepared a body. The next morning, as Zata was about to leave for work his mother would tell him her version of what happened. That Raul died during the war, that they would be having a funeral that day, and that his brother's dead body would be buried in the town's graveyard. Being none the wiser, Zata took all that his mother's words as the truth. His subconscious mind would pick up on the inconsistencies of what happened and presented it to him in nightmares.
