taking a few days to recover from the many drinks he shared with Michael Navidson after his successful elite four challenge, he now has to face his close friend kyle lopez who steps in as a substitute.[break][break]

he can only vibe well since there was a floating fan rotom, courtesy of rotomtv, sponsor of cian's early days, keeping him cool.

"besides, i'm the substitute. substitutes should do it wherever the person they're replacing would have done it."

part of him was glad that MATIAS SILPH was out with a date with Elisabeth Fiorelli since he assumes that cian was one of the people who should have a negative opinion of the guy.

knowing cian though, he'd more likely blame himself for the loss of his relationship with PENELOPE LIVY rather than matias.

"don't worry," kyle releases his pokemon on the field, "you'll have a different experience here than there. we'll save the change of scenery for when it matters."

too busy fiddling with the pokeballs in his backpack, he doesn't hear the tail end of what kyle says which would have saved cian future embarrassment later.[break][break]

"well, i don't have magmortar, so you get what you get. either way, it's not like it'll be much different."

and even if that had not been the case, there really won't be that much change. at the end of the day, it's still a fire-type catered to matias' play style of going aggressive.

"as much as i would like to give you a chance, unfortunately, rules are rules. i can't break them just because we're friends."

with a shrug, he goes back to business.

"let's just end this quick so we can go get lunch."

arcanine barks in accordance to his trainer's will, alerting the electivire with the subtle messages it would be oblivious to, but not a pokemon used to pack tactics.

a snarl from the fire-type comes to intimidate the opposing pokemon in an attempt to distract them long enough for the electivire to shower them with rock slide from afar.

"the place i wanted to go to is a good distance away from the building, alright," he tells cian. "we need to be there before it gets busy."

despite being a hole-in-the-wall restaurant, it was popular. the place was small, and the owner doesn't seem to have plans on expanding. lines only get big as its fame grows.

he really shouldn't be thinking of food, but instead, concentrate on the fight. then again, he's going the matias approach.

in a typical matias fashion, kyle decides to not give his pokemon clear instructions and instead, rely on the direction of the training he gave them. he did tell them to go aggressive beforehand, which contrasts the defensive style of kyle's own training.

confused by the ninetales, all instructions go south.

the electivire shakes the ground with earthquake, conveniently timing it with the raboot's landing, despite having a fire-type teammate. on the other hand, the arcanine burns up despite facing two fire-types, his flames spreading all over the ninetales.

thinking little of how disjointed kyle's team appears to be, cian focuses on his own team, instructing them like a trained maestro orchestrating the grandest of symphonies.[break][break]

"that's fine! stay light on your toes and hop-hop-hop away!"[break][break]

his direction is more applicable to raboot but it also applies to ninetales.[break][break]

slammed by EARTHQUAKE, raboot maintains its balance and comes in close to start HIGH JUMP KICKING electivire, capitalizing on its confused state.[break][break]

ninetales is able to take the BURN UP without incurring much damage. not wanting to use a fire-move in return, it opts on EXTRASENSORY, attempting to pry deep into arcanine's mind.

the heavy hit gets the electivire out of its trance. it almost tips over on its weight, but catches his balance at the last moment.

with the ninetales concentrated on the arcanine, the electivire takes up the role of freeing the arcanine from its own confusion by targeting the distracted fire-type. a dynamic punch is swung in the midst of its attack, ignoring the raboot that had attacked it.

the arcanine, on the other hand, attempts to withstand the ninetale's. overheat comes as a byproduct of its endurance, letting out bursts of flames all over its body. all pokemon are in range, but given electivire's typing, it's the one that was in danger of taking the most damage out of it.

"do you like johto-style ramen?" he asks cian.

leave it to the vct champion to try and make quick work of hoenn's top champion.[break][break]

needing to quickly swap typings, raboot engulfs itself in FLAMES before CHARGING into electivire, catching it from the side while it swings a DYNAMIC PUNCH at ninetales.[break][break]

recovering from the blow, ninetales stumbles back, shakes it off, and then turns to douse electivire in more flames with FIRE BLAST.[break][break]

"yup, i do! why? are you asking me out?"

with its fur singed and burnt with every fire-type attack targeting it, the electivire chooses to rush over to the ninetales, seeing it as the weakened target.

the arcanine regains its senses with the support it got from its teammate, and it doesn't take him long to see what the condition of the fight was within the few moments it relapsed.

it barks, and dashes with extreme speed to trip the ninetales to limit its chances of recovery. the electivire was there to follow it up with its own move.

shrouded in flames, it makes a last ditch effort to rush at the dainty pokemon with giga impact. burnt and all, it relies on its weight to crush the pokemon, knowing that it can't hang on to consciousness for long.

it faints afterwards, forcing kyle to recall the pokemon now rather than waiting for another hit to fully take it out.

"i mean, if that's what you call lunch with friends, then maybe," he teases. "do you want to see me sit alone at a restaurant?"

NINETALES is the support but its health reflects that of a glass cannon, so it doesn't surprise him when he sees it falling to the combined attacks, the last ditch effort of GIGA IMPACT enough to make the difference.[break][break]

it leaves ARCANINE a parting gift, however, and DISABLES its EXTREME SPEED to set RABOOT up for an easy win.[break][break]

still coated in TERA CRYSTALS, RABOOT chases after ARCANINE, intending to close out the round with HIGH JUMP KICKS.[break][break]

the electivire is recalled. they're left with a one-on-one.

"we go after this match. do you really want to set up an interview for your pre-champion match as well?"

that would suggest making their match a show. kyle isn't quite ready for it yet.

when the arcanine attempts to move away with extreme speed, the pokemon finds itself unable to get away. surprise makes it open to the hit, and in its last ditch effort of survival, bathes itself with morning sun.

it throws the raboot away from him with a swing of its head, but damage was already done.

staying on the defensive was a slow road to a loss, but the advantage of surprise from having its move disabled is now lost by the opposing side. the arcanine is ready for another exchange.

he blinks, staring back at his friend with a look of confusion as realization slowly, very slowly, trickles in.[break][break]

"isn't this the champion match?"[break][break]

where arcanine stays on the defensive, raboot does the opposite, not giving it any room to breathe or recover. the MORNING SUN may have its back but raboot is quickly on it—literally, as the fire-type leaps on to vomit a GUNK SHOT into the back of its head.

"huh? of course not."

he says it like it's an obvious thing.

"matias is busy today so i'm standing in for him." besides, he knows how matias will talk to cian. it was for the better that he wasn't around. "it wouldn't be this easy if this was your last match."

the gunk shot hits the arcanine, and in the series of unfortunate events for the pokemon, poison soaks through the fur and manages to seep in enough to induce toxins on his skin.

the pokemon retaliates with pouncing at the raboot, facing him in close combat. even with extreme speed disabled, its speed was still undeniable.
