Finding himself in Area Zero once again was something Rhys supposed he shouldn't be surprised at. If he were being realistic, he ought to be more surprised that he was stuck between a sheer rock wall and a drop into some unknown depths of the sparkling-crystal hell, actually having to duck some kind of robotic Gardevoir's blade while his Crobat flapped madly above the thing's head.

Day in the life, at this point, really.

He'd come down as assigned to meet yet another Rocket he hadn't encountered before - and really, couldn't it be said that he was making acquaintances, now, if nothing else? - and instead of finding another person to do some light recon with, he'd found a nest of pokemon that looked like they might have been more at home in some kind of factory.

His foot slipped off the edge of the narrow walkway, and a zing of fear snatched it back, the doctor plastering himself to the wall as he tried to edge across to the other side where his Crobat and the Iron Valiant were scuffling. The way he'd come from was off-limits; rotund things with enormous metal hands were wandering too closely to his exit path for comfort.

[break][break] his partner had supposed to be arrive ten minutes ago. sure, ten minutes was practically nothing in the grand scheme of things but caden, who's life had fallen out from beneath him in mere seconds flat, had only one thing going for him these days. control of his life was pertinent. it was why this pissed him off so bad.

[break][break] to be frank, everything pissed him off lately. but especially this. because he wouldn't had a partner - who he didn't fucking know - assigned to him if CIAN MAHER hadn't defected. his twin had always been a reliable partner, and they'd always been able to get through these missions with little to no mistake. it was because they were family, because they knew each other just that well. caden had been spoiled by his brother, in more ways than one.

He faltered a little, caught on his narrow ledge. No way forward, no way back, and now the abyss was literally calling his name. Granted, he'd been there before, in a metaphorical sense, but he could hear his name clear as day. "Not today, Giratina!" he bit out, leaning out just enough to glare disapprovingly into the drop below.

Oh, there was another stretch of cave on the level below him. And a man that looked almost as pissed off as he was. "At your service," he shot back wryly. "caden maher, I presume?"

Crobat scored a lucky CROSS POISON on the Iron Valiant, causing it to slam into the wall, metallic surface hissing. Rhys glanced back, noting that the waddling sumo-looking things now sparked with electricity.

He peered down at his companion, more irritated at his situation now than in actual fear of his life. "Boxed in up here, a little help?"

Ah, Arceus, one of those guys, Rhys cursed silently. He should have expected more of this sort of thing, in hindsight, than what he'd really experienced so far.

His Crobat had taken out the Iron Valiant, at last, but the Bundle waddling toward Rhys was looking like more than the bat could handle - and it was already looking worse for the wear after prolonged fighting. He could call out another pokemon, but would that be quick enough to beat either side of the Paradox beasts rushing him during the lapse?

He hated taking chances.

"Hell if I know!" he called down to the other man. "I don't have money!"

An arc of electricity snapped into the wall too close to him for comfort.

[break][break] There was something especially satisfying about hearing someone else beg for him, even if it was a forced context such as this. It was this sort of thing that he'd be missing all these months, when his life had slid out from under him. He'd missed this control.

[break][break] His lips slid into a smirk.

[break][break] "Well," he said. "Since you asked so nicely."

[break][break] As tempting as it was the dangle death over him, Caden knew that there was only so long that he could. Reaching for his belt, he released his Magneton. Electricity crackled around the floating Magnet Pokemon, before flashing out in bright beams of color in the form of a TRI ATTACK.

[break][break] The smell of scorching metal and feathers filled the air, leaving Rhys and Caden alone.

[break][break] A smug smile rested on the latter's face, arms outstretched.

His mental tirade was cut short by the appearance of the Magneton and the subsequent appearance of its TRI-ATTACK, neatly taking out his aggressors. Having narrowly avoided one of the beams itself, his Crobat took the welcome opportunity to immediately drop to the ground, unmoving.

Rhys squinted over to the thing. It at least appeared to be breathing.

[break][break] Because that motherfucker was jumping.

[break][break] Caden fumbled for his belt, only to realize that his Hypno was already out. "Get him," he hissed, before looking up in the air, watching as the pink light of PSYCHIC infused around the other Rocket grunt, an aim to buoy his fall. Caden tried to - poorly - measure the distance of the other man, but it was difficult and all too fast.

[break][break] The doctor grunted as he haphazardly caught the other man, but the weight was too much, forcing him back and against the ground, in a tangle of arms and limbs.

The sensation of being buoyed by PSYCHIC energy was an unfamiliar and unwelcome one, but he supposed it was better than the alternative of breaking something at the end of his fall. Despite the precaution - or perhaps because of it - he was surprised and a little gratified that his impact on the other man was less than graceful and sent them both down in an ungainly fashion.

Serves you right, he grimaced, pushing against the other man in an attempt to get off the floor, or at least directly off the person who was currently at the top of his frustrations.

[attr="class","caden"] The situation isn't ideal, but Caden has always been able to twist the most unfortunate of scenarios in his favor. So it shouldn't be surprising that he still remains smug even as the other man climbs off of him, freeing him too, as he also pushes himself to his feet.

[break][break] "I'm glad you see it my way," he says, lips twisted into a smile. It's one of the few pleasures that he has these days — needling others whenever the opportunity arises — so he's glad when the other man takes the bait.

This mission couldn't end fast enough, and it had only barely begun. Not only had he managed to get swarmed by pokemon, Rhys had leapt into the arms of another man - literally - who had been egging him on as some kind of ridiculously suave kind of hazing, and on top of it he was fairly sure he wouldn't ever hear the end of it.

As he clambered to his feet and dusted himself off, he was fuming so much that he didn't even deign the other man's first comment with a response, gritting his teeth and recalling his battered Crobat.

Oh, he'll read the story? "I'm sure you will, y-" his snide retort was cut off as he processed the follow-up, and he immediately averted his gaze, staring instead at the interesting patterns on the cave floor. Now the guy was flirting? Or just continuing - again = to make fun of him?

Slowly raising his head to meet the man's pointing finger, he looks down at his shoes and finds he's stepped in a thick, viscous oily substance at some point during this whole debacle, and he can't help but throw his hands up and release an aggrieved snarl, scuffing his shoes angrily on the floor as he stomps away from Caden. "No I'm not going to fucking include that in the story! For the love of-!"

He knew solidly, in that moment, if he'd had the capability to, he would have exploded on the spot.

Caden isn't sure what he was expecting from pointing out the other's mistake, or the disgusting liquid dripping off of his foot. He isn't sure if he's egging him on just to be a shit, or because he sincerely enjoys poking and prodding the other's discomforts.

Rhys's indignation did not, in fact, fade with the passing moments, but he reasoned that allowing the Hypno to remove the remaining detritus from his shoes would outweigh the complexity of having to come up with a way to modify the memories of anyone who saw him trudging back with Arceus-knew-what on his shoe.

Hissing an exhale through his nose - audibly venting his frustration so that his next words would be spoken rather than shouted - he turned to Caden with an unimpressed frown. The red in his cheeks was striking against his pale complexion and hair, and one would be hard-pressed to guess whether it was from anger or embarrassment at the other man's comments.

"Nobody's perfect," he retorts with a low hiss, "And I'm not-"

He cut off the rest of his sentence with a clench of his jaw, turning to recall his exhausted Crobat and speaking his next words facing away from his companion.

"Can we pretend none of this happened? I don't think I'll survive it otherwise."
