"Abeille!"[break][break]

A cry rings out through the quiet streets of Fortree, turning the heads of a few curious bystanders. They'd look to see a rather frazzled man with windswept hair and glasses askew taking short, panicked breaths as he scanned the surrounding greenery. He's taken his scarf from around his neck and wrings it with anxious hands.[break][break]

"Abeille!" he calls again. "Where are you? Oh, you haven't seen a Cutiefly about, have you?" Those he stops in his search look sympathetic, but ultimately provide no leads as to the whereabouts of the little bug. He thanks them regardless, shakes their hands, tries not to cry. He'd scarcely been in Hoenn a week! What kind of an omen was this?[break][break]

Joli can sense his anguish; the Sylveon wraps his feelers around his trainer's forearm and lets out a comforting trill. Florian tries a laugh, but it comes out as a strangled, incomprehensible sound.[break][break]

"Ah, I know, Joli, I'm a mess. We'll find her, darling."[break][break]

A kind resident of the city points him in the direction of a man he doesn't recognize. He's the gym leader of Fortree, apparently, a flying-type specialist. Cutiefly is classified as a fairy and a bug, but it has wings and it could fly, so... perhaps he could help?[break][break]

He's composed himself as best as he can when he approaches. "Ah, bonjour?" he calls. "That is — hello, I mean. Are you Monsieur Ivanov?"

Thankfully, Alexei’s familiar with Kalosian—since one of the fellow Gym Leaders (and good friend) hails from that region. So there was no need for his mind to get lost in translation—he knew enough of the language to understand what local Kalosians would talk about but that was it.[break][break]

“Uhh, yes, that would be he—I mean, me,” he began, his eyebrows going up in slight wonder. “I heard something about a Cutiefly?” he added a few moments later. “They’re terribly tiny, and such a pain to lose…”[break][break]

His mind flashbacked to that one time when he himself lost Carina around the area and had been beset by a bunch of potential challengers and then he wasn’t exactly in his local guise then because—[break][break]

Well that was a story for another time, ahem.[break][break]

“I have someone who can help,” he offered, fishing out the cutest little scuffed Love Ball and popping it to full size, flicking it forward and watching as an equally… well, not as small figure burst out of the stream of red light. “Carina, I know you can find your own kind. Can you help?” he asked the surprised Ribombee, who had apparently been napping inside the confines.[break][break]

“Sorry if I woke you up, but… he needs our help,” he added, gesturing to the blonde.[break][break]

“Don’t worry, she’s nice,” he added as the Ribombee then began circling around the blonde, attempting to pick out the aura of the Cutiefly. After a while, she let out a humming noise, and took off.[break][break]

“Well, let’s go follow her, shall we?”

Alexei seems a tad caught off guard by his sudden approach, but recovers quickly and seems perfectly polite. Florian can't help but to be relieved at this; he wasn't sure what the gym leaders of Hoenn would be like, having only a modicum of knowledge of Miss Alfric as she used fairy-types in her gym.[break][break]

"Yes, that would be mine," he agrees on hurried breath, relieved that Alexei has already heard. "Abeille, my darling, we were exploring the city and she must've gotten lost — all of the unfamiliar sensations. She's barely gotten used to Verdanturf and I should have known better than to take my eyes off of her here..."[break][break]

He's rambling, catches himself and wrings his hands.[break][break]

"Apologies, monsieur, I'm terribly distressed."[break][break]

Alexei seems more than willing to help, and Florian could have hugged him. He doesn't, instead looking as if he's about to cry from a hysterical sort of relief. His expression brightens to something like wonder when a Ribombee is released from its Pokeball, the Kalosian's eyes going wide as saucers.[break][break]

"Oh, she's a darling!" Carina flits around him, and Florian follows the path of the little fairy with a grin. "You are a sweetheart, Carina, thank you so much!"[break][break]

He nods when Alexei suggests to follow, starting off after the little bug. "And thank you." He turns to Alexei as they walk. "I did not introduce myself, forgive me; Florian Laurel. I just moved from Kalos — I'm sure the accent gives it away, no?"[break][break]

He laughs, a soft and musical sound.[break][break]

“No worries, it’s good luck we met out here,” he reassures Florian with a smile on his face.[break][break]

“From where in Kalos do you hail from? I know a friend who comes from there. Interestingly he’s the Gym Leader of Verdanturf, have you the chance to meet him or not yet?” he inquired from the other.[break][break]

Keeping his eyes on the not-as-small Ribombee as she flit through the area, he continued to speak to Florian, hoping to calm him down. “What brings you to Hoenn? Is it the climate? Or the sights?”[break][break]

He knows the signs of being a nervous wreck, being one himself—at least in private. He hoped that the Cutiefly hadn’t gone too far out of the city proper, because then that would be another problem and a half entirely. Hopefully it hadn’t wandered too far. Perhaps the Cutiefly was hungry?[break][break]

“There’s a chance your little Abeillie may be hungry and went to look for some flowers, I’m sure you know how they’re drawn to flowers that are about to bloom and take enough to feed themselves,” he remarked presently.[break][break]

Just where was Carina taking them? He didn’t know—at least not yet.

Florian's grateful for the conversation, anything to take his mind off of the distress. He's starting to calm down now that they're taking action, having faith in Carina to find one of her own.[break][break]

"From beautiful Laverre," he says with a wistful sigh. "I will miss it so, but Hoenn is beautiful in its own right. Especially here, surrounded by nature." He gestures around at the towering trees. He admired the way that Fortree seems to have built around the forest, instead of chopping it down and building in its place. Had he not found a place in Verdanturf first, he could see himself having settled down here. "You are the only gym leader I have met thus far, though you make a good impression."[break][break]

He grins at Alexei, and there's something light and playful in his tone. He was quick to make friends with others, and the Fortree leader had certainly peaked his interest by bringing out a fairy-type of his own.[break][break]

"Your friend... Monsieur Benoit, no?"[break][break]

He might not have met the man, but he had learned the name of Verdanturf's gym leader. He didn't know anything else about him, not even the sorts of Pokemon he preferred to use, but a name was a good start.[break][break]

"I have come for the Pokemon, in truth. The fairies." He smiles down at his Sylveon, who offers an answering chirp. "I am a professor, you see; I study them! So yes," he agrees, "I except Abeille has wandered off in search of flowers. Normally I would not be so worried, but this place is so big... she probably could not find her way back. I am glad we have your Carina to help search."

“Yes, that would be him. He’s the Dark-type leader—a very misunderstood typing, to be fair. He’s from Shalour, where I believe there’s a Tower of some sort? Near the beach?”[break][break]

That much he knew about the place. What he was privy to as well was that Shalour was the undisputed birthplace of Mega Evolution knowledge, but that’s a topic for another day.[break][break]

“Doesn’t Laverre have the odd clock tower? The one with thirteen numbers on it instead of twelve? Near that massive tree… yes, I think it was near there, in the middle of the city,” he adds, trying to remember what little he knew of the place. “And then, Fairy-types love the nature around the place.”[break][break]

The moment he revealed that he had come for the Fairy-types, the expression on his face changes to one of excitement. “There’s a lot of Pokémon from around here in Hoenn who’re definitely part-Fairy now, shame that there was only one from my home region that’s actually part-Fairy. Have you ever encountered a Cottonee?”[break][break]

He wonders if Carina has found the patch of flowers where the smaller Pokémon had run off to. “When was the last time your Abeille had something to eat?” he inquired a few moments later.

Florian offers an understanding nod. Most who met the very flamboyant fairy professor might assume he was much the same when it came to judging those lesser-loved types; he looked so delicate, after all, and his favourite types erred toward the side of cute and fragile. But that simply wasn't true.[break][break]

"Yes. Quite sad, I think." His grin fades into a contemplative expression, brows knit together. "I believe all Pokemon should be given their fair chance. After all, so many dismiss my beloved fairies for weak, but they have not seen my Joli face down a dragon!"

He laughs, and his Sylveon chirps excitedly upon hearing his name. Florian strokes his companion's fur as he rubs up against his hand like a cat, purring all the while. He was truly a gentle soul, but Florian had seen his fiercer side as well.[break][break]

"As for Shalour... I have not been myself, though I saw its coast when I took the boat from Coumarine. It's not far from there. And the tower, yes, I saw that, too."[break][break]

On Laverre, he is more animated, nodding enthusiastically as Alexei describes features of his hometown. "Yes, the tree underneath which we have our gym! The gym is covered in flowers, and the city is so beautiful in autumn..." He'd never been inside the gym, not much of a battler himself, but one couldn't help but admire the floral decorations. There were flowerbeds everywhere in the city, and it left the whole place smelling fragrant and like home. "Laverre is where I met my Abeille, and Jonquille as well."[break][break]

He sends out a Comfey, who seems a bit confused by the new surroundings before she spots her trainer and gives a little trill in greeting.[break][break]

"Joli here, he was... a gift." It's not the truth, but it's close enough for now. A much too personal story between strangers. "My little darling has come so far from the little Eevee he once was. And — Cottonee, yes! You are Unovan, then?" He's surprised to learn that so many of the gym leaders in Hoenn might not be native to the region. It makes him feel like he'll be readily accepted into his new home. "I remember when the Fairy-type was first discovered, there was so much excitement in reclassifying those we had previously thought to be another type! Like Clefairy, no? It's right in the name!" He laughs, cheeks flushed.[break][break]

He has to think about the question, tilts his head. "It cannot have been too long, but she is a curious little thing. If she smells flowers, she will seek them out, hungry or no. I'm always having to shoo her away from Jonquille."

“Moment word got out that Ralts was part-Fairy, I remember another friend of mine telling me a lot of people swarmed around in the grassy stretch connecting Oldale and Petalburg. Madness, really,” he recounts with a chuckle.[break][break]

“Dragons have held the throne for too long, and now that there are Fairy-types around, it pretty much leveled the training field,” he added a few moments later.[break][break]

At the mention of his home region, he nods. Maybe a little too excitedly but who cared? “Western Unova, actually. Mistralton. let the fun begin

Florian has to take a moment, squinting a little as he tries to recall the map of Hoenn he now has hanging on his wall. He is most familiar with Slateport, and the route through Mauville that leads to Verdanturf. Fortree, as well, now; he thinks these mentioned places must be more out of the way, though he recognizes Petalburg as the name of a city. It sounds nice to Florian, though he's perhaps biased by the name.[break][break]

Ralts, however, he's familiar with. [break][break]

"Ralts are such interesting creatures! I've always wanted one of my own." They could be found in Kalos, not far from Lumiose, but Florian hadn't found the time to look before he'd moved on. "They're terribly shy, though. I hear they don't appear often."[break][break]

Alexei seems as excited to talk of Unova as Florian had been when they'd spoke of Kalos, and he's more than happy to indulge his newfound companion by listening with rapt interest. Mistralton in particular is a familiar name; he recognizes it from when he'd been looking at flights to Hoenn, before he'd ultimately decided on traveling by sea. "That is the city with the airport, no?" He smiles at the mention of mountains. He'd always liked the idea of them, even though Laverre itself was rather flat. "I have heard that the stars are beautiful above Snowbelle, but it is so cold there at night." He shakes his head. "I have never liked the cold much; my Pokemon, as well."[break][break]

Conversation stills as the Ribombee returns to them, Florian's eyes wide and searching as she flits around him and darts off. He doesn't need to be told twice — he follows with vigor, and nearly bursts into tears of relief when a tiny insect rushes him.[break][break]

"Abeille," he breathes, "oh, darling, I'm so glad to see you safe!"[break][break]

The Cutiefly flutters up to bump him on the nose, her favoured greeting, then flits around Jonquille and Joli. The latter takes a playful swipe at her, tail twitching.[break][break]

"Thank you, Carina," Florian tells the Ribombee with the same sincerity as he would display in human interaction. The same sincerity that's mirrored in the grateful look he passes Alexei. "And thank you, too. I don't know what I would have done if I couldn't find her, I—" He clasps a hand to his chest, shakes his head. "No matter, now. She is safe."

“Hilariously, now that you mention Ralts being terribly shy… not a single one appeared on that stretch of grass. It was like they knew what was coming and hid away from it,” Alexei added, silently shaking with laughter.[break][break]

“It takes a lot of patience to find a Ralts and then approach it without fighting it… I had to get one of mine from the Safari Zone down near Lilycove. It was… an experience in itself,” he recounted. “And to think most want a female Ralts because of Gardevoir…” he trailed off for a few moments, wondering if anyone else had managed to catch a Ralts from the stretch between Oldale and Petalburg lately.[break][break]

“The runway practically runs through the center, because of the planes that come and go. Most of everyone’s involves in the flight industry. Maintenance and cargo, that kind of thing, and planes can only leave a certain number of times in a day,” he explained further. “The greenhouses are more numerous, and most of the business comes in when vegetables are shipped out.”[break][break]

He appreciates the momentary interruption when he watches his Ribombee lead the way, and eventually witnesses the reunion between the worried Florian and the Cutiefly. “She was most likely just hungry. They can find flowers from… well, quite the distance. And only then, they choose those that are about ready to bloom to drink from.”[break][break]

Oh, how he remembered when Carina decided to do the exact same thing. It was a righteous disaster, honestly. Who knew that his own then-Cutiefly favored one of the Berry bushes a certain distance outside the city limits?![break][break]

“Have… have you considered planting some flowers for your Cutiefly to tend to while you’re home?” he inquires of Florian a few moments later. “It should help. I mean, you also have the Comfey too…”

Florian giggles at the thought. Pokemon are often smarter than they're given credit for, and Ralts being part psychic-type certainly helped. "I hear they only appear to those with a positive aura." He spares a moment for melancholy, then. What if a Ralts never deemed him to be a worthy partner? He's not sure what determined a positive aura; was it deeds, personality, a simple luck of the draw? Perhaps the aura thing was a myth. His Pokedex was not always a font of flawless information, after all. "Gardevoir can be male, as well; perhaps they ought to be less selective."[break][break]

He's content to nod at Alexei's explanations. He knows much and more about Cutiefly, the tiny bug being a favourite of his, but he appreciates that the gym leader is a font of knowledge all on his own. Even among fairy enthusiasts, so many looked over Pokemon like Cutiefly because they were classified as bugs. A shame.[break][break]

Alexei does get his attention with the mention of a garden.[break][break]

"Oh, goodness, no wonder," he says, laughing at his own expense and shaking his head. "There are gardens all over Laverre. I had my own, as well, but we've been so busy with the move — I hadn't gotten around to planting, yet." There was the season to think about, as well. He had yet to do the proper amount of research on the Hoennian soil and ideal planting times, along with what species of berries and flowers might be considered invasive or simply wouldn't thrive. "I'll need to set up a little indoor garden for my poor darlings. Do you have much experience with gardening?" He tilts his head. "I imagine it's quite different here than back home. How are your winters?"

At the mention of ‘winter’ Alexei almost lets out a snort of laughter.[break][break]

“Winter? If there’s one thing that Hoenn doesn’t have, it’s that. Due to the tropical location of this region, there’s only one place that’s eternally locked in ice and snow, and that’s the Shoal Cave. Somewhere off the coast of Lilycove, the lower levels of the cave are the closest to what can be called ‘winter’ around here,” he explains.[break][break]

“Around this time of the year the first snowfall should be covering northern and western Unova, and since Mistralton is high up in the mountains, it can get really cold most days,” he reminisced, before turning his attention back to Carina, who had come to a stop on his nose.[break][break]

“Yes, what is it?” he asked the tiny little butterfly-like Pokémon, who was humming in his direction. After a while, Alexei turns to face Florian.[break][break]

“You can have your own outdoor garden in Verdanturf, in fact it’s actually encouraged for people who live there to have gardens as it helps contribute to the fresh, clean air around the place. No need to keep them in pots inside your house,” he added a few moments later.[break][break]

“And it seems that Carina is trying to tell me something… that your Abeille likes the flowers in the park. I can easily get you some seeds from around here so you can plant them when you return home,” he continued.[break][break]

“That is, if you wouldn’t mind?”

he hates the cold and could not be happier

Eyes of bright blue go wide as saucers as Alexei tells him about Hoenn's climate, red blush rising in his cheeks as he realises it must have been a silly question.

"No winter? At all?" He seems shocked by the concept, but his expression slowly morphs into a delighted grin. "Ah, such news could not be more welcome! I cannot imagine being able to garden all year long. Magnifique!"
[break][break]

His thoughts drift into daydreams of a year-round garden and of never needing to bury himself beneath so many layers of winter clothing, no need for his delicate grass and fairy Pokemon to stay inside their Pokeballs.[break][break]

"But of course! I would want nothing more than an outdoor garden I would not have to bid farewell to every autumn!" Laverre was gorgeous in autumn, with its colourful foliage and the smell of damp leaves. He had to admit that he would miss spring, as well, the excitement of seeing his perennial flowers return to life, little green shoots in the earth. Still, no winters. "I had only thought to use indoor pots because I assumed that it would be too cold, but you have told me otherwise monsieur!"[break][break]

It's equally nice to hear that gardening is encouraged in Verdanturf; he had noticed that many of his neighbours cultivated plenty of flowers.[break][break]

"Oh, would you be so kind? That would be delightful!"[break][break]

“Nope, none at all. In fact, the region is classified to be tropical in weather patterns and conditions,” he says, having lived here ever since he was eighteen.[break][break]

“I was surprised myself when I first came here. I’d packed a lot of winter clothing, only to find out it was all for nothing!” he added with a laugh. “Although, I would advise jackets for cold mornings when it gets real nippy at times near the end of the year.”[break][break]

Thankfully, the people he had to contact about the flower seeds were just one phone call away. “How much would you want? A packet? Two? Several? Lots?” he asked as he punched in the number and lifted the phone to his ear. Ringing, before a voice answered.[break][break]

As he carried on the conversation with the park wardens on the other line, the Ribombee in his care flittering around Florian and the Cutiefly she’d found. Humming slightly, she then hovers near Florian’s face, offering a sweet-looking yellow Pollen Puff for him to take.[break][break]

Meanwhile, Alexei was busy with the conversation over the phone, taking mental notes as fast as he could manage. “Really? You can spare how much?!” he exclaimed, before catching the phone as it nearly fell off his shoulder. “Alright, I’ll be coming by soon,” and with that he hung up.[break][break]

“Well, looks like we got you a supply of the flower seeds. You want to head over to the park to get them?” he offered.

Florian lets out a contented sigh, smiling wide at the Cutiefly that's now buzzing happily about his ear. "You hear that, Abeille? You will be able to spend all year in your garden!"[break][break]

Though he can't understand the high-pitched buzzing she returns, he can tell his Pokemon is delighted.[break][break]

"Oh, don't worry," Florian laughs, "I brought plenty of cold-weather clothing. I had not thought to look up weather patterns before the move!"[break][break]

There was a reason for that: the move had been a spontaneous decision, a spur-of-the-moment leap of faith. It was for similar reasons that the small house in Verdanturf had become a home; it was well-priced and available on short notice, and here they were.[break][break]

"Oh, I, um —" Truth be told, he hadn't given it much thought beyond yes, flowers, and it takes him a flustered moment to gather himself and answer. "Only as much as they can spare! I would not want to be an inconvenience."[break][break]

Little did he know that 'as much as they could spare' would turn out to be... a lot.[break][break]

"Thank you, Carina," Florian says sweetly as he accepts the offered Pollen Puff. He's always appreciated the Alolan delicacy; it was not common in Kalos, but a fairy-type researcher certainly knew ways to get their hands on them. To Alexei, he nods. "But of course!"
