River is minding his own business - something he tries to do frequently but fails at every time. He's caught in the crossfire, then, as Oldale comes under attack by what the citizens describe as a dragon attack. He doesn't care at the time because why should he? He's just passing through and he's not concerned with the mundane lives of people who mean nothing to him.[break][break]

Except, when he heads right for the corn dog stand he'd been craving, having followed the smell since he'd arrived in the quaint little town, he soon realises he does care. Sort of.[break][break]

Something has burned the corndogs to a crisp. What once had been a heavenly smell of corn-bread coated deliciousness was now charred and stinky. It wasn't edible. Well, not for him, anyway. His Shinx seemed to have taken a great liking to the charred remains, eating it up eagerly.[break][break]

The boy's nose wrinkles in disgust and he kicks aside some rubble and a dropped tire. The van is totalled, and whoever was running it had written a haphazard sign indicating he wasn't coming back because he'd almost been eaten.[break][break]

"Great. Juuust great. I hate this place."[break][break]

He throws his head back then in exaggeration, a groan escaping his throat and rattling his adam's apple. He looks quite the miserable sight.

[attr="class","threadIris"]Rangers in the surrounding towns had been called to Oldale the moment the dragons struck. Today's babysitter seemed less upset by the attack than the fact that Iris was still with her. Not trusted enough to be left alone, especially amongst this panic, she was given the strict order to stick by her side and (most importantly) not get involved.

Which was a no-brainer, really, when the league had given her a pokemon as weak as this.

It's no effort to keep up with her superior, but her mudkip begins to fall behind. Iris sweeps the pokemon up in her arms with an irritated sigh, barely breaking pace.

As she runs, a familiar head of white hair stops her in her tracks. Iris falters for a moment and sure enough, it's--

"River!" She glances at the retreating form of the older ranger. They weren't going to be happy about this. Switching paths towards the Rocket boy, she closes the distance between them. "What are you doing here?!

River continues to stand there and scratch the back of his head. He had half a mind to just get the hell out of dodge and forget about this whole thing, but he was also too worked up about his corndog stand that had been left in shambles.[break][break]

By now, he could see several very tiny lizards making their way over the debris and he couldn't help but stare quizzically. He'd never seen anything like it, and when he stepped closer they disappeared entirely. [break][break]

He's just about to take another step and confront these tiny attackers when a familiar voice calls out to him. The man turns and is surprised to see Iris. He hadn't really known her well, but had heard talk that she'd fallen in with the league and had been paraded around like some sort of.. pet.[break][break]

"What are you doing here?"[break][break]

Before their conversation can continue, several more tiny dragons are launched at them at a breakneck pace, disappearing immediately once they hit the ground. River side steps and hikes up his knees in an attempt to avoid the

dragon breath

that threatens to set his pants on fire.[break][break]

He then starts to run, and a very small and very startled Shinx appears to jump from his shoulder in the confusion and skids into a sprint as she struggles to keep up with River, who has apparently turned coward and ran.

[attr="class","threadIris"]she isn't all that surprised when he runs off without so much as a glance back--camaraderie hadn't exactly been strong in rocket--but that doesn't stop the sour look on her face. "hey! wait up!" she dashes after him, a dying dragon breath licks the heel of her shoe, scorching it slightly.

her life up until now had been a series of gruelling commands in the name of 'training'; it is not hard to catch up to him. she clutches tight to blue as she zigzags towards the boy, cautious not to make herself an easy target,

"river" she hears a stall collapse, far too close for comfort, "aren't you going to try and fight that thing?!" the dragon showed no signs of distraction, quite set on the pair as it charged along the street. fuck, it was fast.

River doesn't even look back, and why should he? Iris Foster is no one to him, and never had been. Her father, or her father-figure had introduced them for the sake of her having a friend. River was a friend to no one, really. Not even to himself. So for him to turn tail and run in the face of danger and leave behind an innocent girl.. it wasn't an impossible reaction for him.[break][break]

That, and she had abandoned Rocket and agreed to play nice and follow the League with whatever they needed her to do. So, wasn't it her duty as a ranger puppet then to fight the dragon herself?[break][break]

She shouts for him and River barely casts her a glance because he's still trying to zigzag away from the dragon breath licking at exposed skin on his heels as his jeans rise up and down his ankles.[break][break]

"What do you want?. Can't you see I'm trying to shirk responsibility and let someone else handle this mess? Do I look qualified to fight off an angry momma dragon? Absolutely not. Why are you following me, anyway?"[break][break]

There's a rush of disbelief and realisation however, as River looks up past Iris' shoulder. He can see an uncanny glint in the Dragapult's eye as it

locks-on

to their location. It charges, utiliziing its

agility

to follow up with another attack.[break][break]

River gasps, grabbing hold of Iris and pressing her forcefully against him as he barrels into her, twisting to land on his own back. They narrowly dodge certain death and River's face is pressed against the top of the girls head before he pushes her off. His brief moment of protectiveness is gone in an instant as he gets to his feet.[break][break]

"Aren't you somebody's ranger pet? Aren't you, like, trained to handle shit like this?"[break][break]

He's shouting, and he reaches for a pokeball that dropped from his bag. Shinx runs for it, but a Dreepy seems to have it between his teeth. What a mess this whole thing was.

[attr="class","threadIris"]iris can't help but scowl at his response. what was that attitude for?! as far as she was concerned, they'd been friends during their time at rocket. perhaps she'd only started talking to him because father had insisted she make company with people her age. maybe it was because she was on the other side now--that hadn't been her fault though! if rocket had even thought about rescuing her she might have gone back to the organisation. she was stuck with the rangers, to both their and her own chagrin.

too caught up in her thoughts she doesn't notice the incoming attack until she's forced out the way. iris turns red once she realises river's arms are around her. oh, so maybe he didn't hate her for being with the league. that was...good...

she's still blushing as he suddenly reverts to his cold self. his next words are taken in and suddenly all her gratitude evaporates. "you'd think, right?!" she matches his volume, "well they don't trust me, river! this damn mudkip's all i got! it can't do anything!" she holds out the pokemon in her arms as if to prove her point.

"quick, let's get going while they're preoccupied with your shinx." it seemed like a reasonable sacrifice, given the situation.

The fact that she's blushing causes an involuntary flush of his own cheeks. He gasps at his own weakness, his own inability to take the reins on his thoughts. Why did she always make everything so awkward?[break][break]

She shouts back at him and he struggles to recover. [break][break]

But she mentions a Mudkip and holds it out for him and his water-type weak heart seems to soften just the slighest bit.[break][break]

"Mudkips are great, you stupid girl! You just have to actually train it, like you do with anything else!"[break][break]

Shinx has then since disappeared, chasing an invisible enemy that holds a pokeball between it's teeth. The young kitten mewls plaintively, desperate to retrieve the Lanturn locked away in the capsule.[break][break]

"Like hell we're leaving Shinx behind!"[break][break]

River jostles past her, bumping his shoulder against hers roughly as he chases after his Shinx. He scoops a rock as he runs, taking aim and throwing it directly at the pokeball - or trying to. It seems to scare off the Dreepy carrying it, and it's plaintive shriek is enough to make it drop it's prize.[break][break]

Shinx then grabs hold of the boys pokeball and runs back to River, bouncing into his arms.[break][break]

"Maybe this is why they don't trust you! Because you're so willing to give up! Rangers don't give up, you daft girl."

"why don't you try beating that thing with it then?" she holds the mudkip out to the boy, a challenge, but he's already jostled past her to retrieve his pokemon. unbelievable. while iris had a reason for keeping a close eye on blue (the league wouldn't likely give her a replacement, after all) she didn't understand what river's reasoning was.

when the boy speaks up again, she swears she'd be better off leaving him to the mercy of the dragon. what did he know about her situation anyway?! he hadn't even seen her since she joined the rangers! something in the girl snaps in that moment; whirling around to face the dragapult, she lets blue jump onto the ground.

"blue, mud-slap."
[break][break]
she shoots river a nasty look. "let's see how well this goes, then." her expectations weren't high, to say the least.

He hadn't really meant for her to use Mudkip against an impossible enemy, but he wasn't the best with phrasing or explaining and he liked to pick fights he couldn't win. And any fight with Iris was usually a bad idea. [break][break]

"No, wait--!"[break][break]

River reaches out to stop her from sending Mudkip out to tackle the mother of dragons, but his hand drops through empty space as her shoulder moves away from him. She's too fast.[break][break]

Shinx leaps from her trainer's arms to intercept. The

mud-slap

smacks her square in the face and she finds herself stuck to the ground, mewling from under the pile of mud keeping her trapped to the ground.[break][break]

She begins to tug and flop around, desperate to escape. For the most part, fortunately, it seems the Dragapult has changed target. She's trying to round up her babies, and these young humans are no match for her anyway.[break][break]

"Iris, let's just go. There's nothing we can do here."[break][break]

There's a pleading in his voice this time, a wistful reluctance to let go of his frustration with the girl. [break][break]

Lanturn pops out of its pokeball then, and her light-bulb begins to glow with a brilliant light as she

charges

her energy. With one final effort, the dual-type Pokemon launches an

electro-ball

at the Dragapult which.. surprisingly seems to work.[break][break]

The dragon falls out of the sky, paralysis crackling across her skin.[break][break]

"C'mon! Now's our chance to get the hell out of here."[break][break]

He offers her his hand after he scoops his muddy Shinx off the ground.

"hey!" she'd wanted to teach him a lesson, sure, but she hadn't expected river to react this way. blue stands by her feet, looking expectantly at her, clearly confused by the situation. she realises she hadn't given so much as a second thought to his well-being. she isn't quite sure whether to feel guilty or not.

a loud crash brings her out her thoughts. suddenly, the dragon's collapsed onto one of the stalls and river's calling out to her. she stares at his outstretched hand, surprised by the act of kindness. not wanting to say anything that'd make him draw back, she takes the hand with a grin.

"yeah, let's go."
[break][break]
