A S S I G N M E N T

PROTECT THE PEACH

The estate they'd been assigned to in Petalburg City was perhaps the largest Sigmund had ever set foot on. And he was seeing it in the dark— so that probably meant it looked a lot larger in the daylight! Regardless, the creepy old peach tree in the middle of the massive backyard was clear to see. It seemed that, for some weird reason, the moonlight was determined to shine down on it. Its branches were old and black. The petals hanging off of them looked like they were on their last leg. Despite that, however, the peaches on it looked vibrant and delicious.

After Sarah and him had found their partner for the assignment, a man by the name of Florian, the three had exited the mansion's living room and taken their post upon the backyard's porch. Almost immediately after they had, however, a gang of Litwick lead by a waltzing Oricorio suddenly appeared out of thin air. Despite their melodic swaying and creepy smiles, it soon became clear that they were wholly territorial about their peach tree. A torrent of shadowy balls had been fired their way, prompting Sigmund to duck for cover with his girlfriend, Sarah.

The orbs burst upon contact with the fence and the rest of the backyard porch, filling the air with a temporary purple haze before finally dissipating. Shooting back up and swiftly hopping over the porch fence, Sigmund jabbed a finger in the direction of one of the Litwick, doing his best to shield his eyes with his other hand. "Toskr, Electro Ball! But don't look into its flame! Whatever you do, don't look into its flame!" He urged, running towards a nearby oak tree for cover. "That goes for you guys, too!" He called out to his partners nearby afterwards.

"It'll suck your soul!"

In the meantime, his Emolga charged up a ball of electricity from the tip of its tail after jumping off its perch on its trainer's shoulder and gliding towards the dancing troupe of Ghost-type Pokémon. "Emmol!" It aggressively cried out, issuing a swift front flip that sent the Electro Ball flying towards its target¹. Unfortunately, their erratic swaying made it difficult to aim reliably. The Electro Ball missed and the Emolga was forced to use Agility to jump out of the way of a scary barrage of Will-o-Wisp²!

This was a weird situation, but as long as Sigmund was with her, Sarah was confident everything would be okay. That said, they were dealing with ghosts here, and from what Sigmund had said, scary ghosts. Sarah didn't want her soul sucked out. She'd spent long enough as an almost lifeless shell. She wasn't about to risk it again.[break][break]

"These Pokemon are fire and ghost... I don't think I have a good pokemon for this..." Sarah said, although she stayed close to Sigmund. She had exactly four pokemon. Dopey the Slowbro, while a water type Pokemon, was also psychic and so he was weak to ghost type and all 6 were ghost. Then she had Sneezy the Sneasel... dark type could be helpful, but not when 5 of the enemies were fire type and he was also ice. Then there was Grumpy, the bug type Scyther... he'd be weak to all the fire types. Lastly, she had Bashful, the Ponyta. Perhaps Ponyta could tank any fire type moves with his Flash Fire ability and didn't have a weakness to bug type... but he was also just a baby with no fighting experience.[break][break]

"I don't know what to do Siggy," Sarah thought... but she ended up pulling her first pokemon, in a heal ball. "Dopey! I choose you!"[break][break]

She threw the heal ball, and out from it came her Slowbro.[break][break]

"Dopey, use Water Pulse on the Litwicks!" He fired off his attack, nailing the Litwick that had dodged Emolga.

"It will what?"[break][break]

The pitch of Florian's voice rises in panic as he ducks for cover behind a weathered shed. A shadow ball bursts against the corner of the structure with a soft hiss. Why had he agreed to this, again?[break][break]

In contrast to his trainer's alarm and evident fright, Florian's Sylveon leaps into the danger with abandon. In his attempt to protect Emolga from the barrage of fiery attacks, the fairy-type found himself grazed by one of the errant wisps.[break][break]

He stumbles upon landing, lifting his burned paw, then turns to the offending Litwick. Psychic energy pulses about his paws. His eyes flash. The embers fired by the Litwick collide with his pink-and-white fur... to no further effect. He'd swapped skills with his target, and the ribboned fairy flashes his canines in a cheeky grin.[break][break]

Turning to the Oricorio that had led the charge, Sylveon bathes his foe in an empowered mystical fire.[break][break]

Florian's heart pounds loud in his ears. He can't see the others from his cover. "Is everyone all right?"[break]

Ghost Hunt

Sigmund had taken notice of Sarah's murmuring and indecision. Just as he turned to stand by her side and help her, however, she finally decided on summoning Dopey. Proud to see that she'd made her mind, and gone in guns blazing at that, the exuberant blonde watched as the Slowbro's Water Pulse tore through the ranks of the attacking Ghost-types. "Yeah!" He cheered, pumping a fist into the air. It seemed a few had escaped the watery wrath with minor damage, but at least one had completely fainted and disappeared. Another was rendered confused!

It's shortly afterward the Sigmund notices the Sylveon limping with its burned paw. He almost commands Ratatoskr to jump in and help, but is awed to see the Sylveon take the brunt of a fire attack with no effect. As it attacks the Oricorio leading the troupe, Sigmund turns back to Florian and nods. "We're good!" He answers, checking back on Sarah for good measure. "Let's surround them and finish this! Ratatoskr, Double Team!" The young blonde commands, watching as his nimble Emolga encircles the group of ghosts and the peach tree so quickly that it leaves afterimages of itself¹.

"Now Pursuit!"

"Emmol!"

In the blink of an eye, the flying rodent is surrounded by a dark energy before tackling the confused Litwick from the group and knocking it out². Just then, the Oricorio released itself from the flames of Mystical Fire in a rapid twirl that seamlessly became a Hurricane attack! Captured easily by the powerful twister, Ratatoskr was pulled out of his Double Team and sent flying up into the air³!

"Toskr!"

Slowbro wasn't the fastest pokemon. And a fast Slowbro like Sarah's still was no exception. Dopey stayed close to Sarah, as there was no good reason to create a significant distance. He'd be ready to protect her at a moment's notice with either his attacks which would be augmented by his psychic powers. [break][break]

"Good job, Sylveon!" Sarah cheered on their teammate. That was a spectacular move to take in the flash fire. Sarah could recognize the strategy from her studies. [break][break]

"Alright, Dopey! One more attack! Water Pulse! Keep it going!" It fired off another attack at one of the Litwicks. "We have to be careful. Dopey's special defense isn't high enough to tank super effective ghost attacks."

Though he can't see the battlefield from his position cowering behind the shed, Florian hears Sarah praise his Sylveon and smiles at the knowledge that Joli is faring well. When she calls out her Pokemon's defensive liabilities, the professor pipes up from his cover:[break][break]

"Oh, Joli has just the thing for that! Light Screen, darling!"[break][break]

Sylveon trills in acknowledgement of the command, cutting off the torrent of flame as the Oricorio twirls away and setting up a shimmering screen of light between his allies and the offending ghosts. He winces from the pain of his burn, favouring his injured paw as he, too, limps behind the protective barrier.[break][break]

Under no command of Florian's, the compassionate fairy-type endeavours to prevent such harm coming to his newfound friends. A pink mist begins to spread about the field, counteracting the eerie fog that the ghosts had brought. The misty terrain would serve as a safeguard against burns — and should the Emolga recover from its confusion with haste, would prevent further muddling.[break][break]

the double-teaming emolga sees double

Ghost Hunt

Wavy waltzing. Many ghosts. Pretty, sparkly water and wall of light. And a pink mist? Ratatoskr begins to wonder whether it is falling unconscious as it glides downward, but hears Sigmund shouting from below. Though the trainer is telling it to land in his arms, reaching out with both, the stubborn Emolga thinks it wants him to tackle the Oricorio with a Pursuit. And it attempts to do so... only to end up crashing into the ground below instead many feet away¹.

With no regard for his own safety, Sigmund pulls a potion out from his belt pouch and rushes over to the fallen rodent. The mist provides some cover from the dancing Ghost-type Pokémon, and buys him enough time to carefully apply the spray once he cradles Ratatoskr carefully into his arms. "Don't worry bud, we'll get you back up in just a second, okay?" Meanwhile, one of the Litwick whimper after being struck by Dopey's Water Pulse, eventually just fading away. Two more to go.

But the two won't go down so easy.

Spotting the Slowbro after it took down one of its lackeys, the Oricorio gracefully twirls and leaps towards the large pink creature like a ballerina. Then, in one fell swoop, it launches an Air Cutter at it with a swipe of its wings³. The surviving Litwick, in the meantime, giggles as it swings in the air to the rhythm of the Oricorio. Setting its eyes on the Sylveon, a dark purple energy surrounds its waxy body like a cloud and rises to form a hauntingly realistic red eye. Unless it was stopped preemptively, the Sylveon was sure to feel the tremendous pain from an enhanced Hex⁴!

Time and time again, it seemed, Sarah was amazed by Florian and his Sylveon's talents, being able to develop strategies on the fly and having an answer for everything. Light screen was another attack Sarah had read about before, and it seemed it was going to work in their favor by protecting Slowbro in this situation. Attacks that could have easily KO'd Dopey would now be resisted to some degree, allowing him to be the tank he was born to be.[break][break]

"Wow! That Sylveon really is an amazing partner for a battle like this!" Sarah exclaimed. The air cutter made contact with her Dopey, he took damage, but he certainly had plenty of HP left. [break][break]

"We still have plenty of HP left! Dopey! We'll take advantage of the type advantage and use Water Pulse... and we'll make sure it hits its target with Psychic!!" Sarah commanded of her slowest pokemon. Dopey opened his mouth before firing off a Water Pulse. As the Litwick attempted to dodge it, the psychic would make it curve at exactly the right moment to follow the Litwick and nail a hit.

As several of the Litwick fall prey to their combined efforts, Florian feels brave enough to poke his head out from behind the shed.

He sees Sigmund, administering aid to his Emolga. He spots Joli with his injured paw, and the mist that slowly spreads beneath him. He spots a Litwick, readying a devastating assault—
[break][break]
— and he sees Sarah with her Slowbro, the dual-type powering up an attack that'll soon head straight for the offender. Deciding to have confidence in the girl and her Pokemon, Florian calls out, "Draining Kiss! Target the bird!"
[break][break]
Theirs is a partnership that has withstood many struggles over the years, and Joli doesn't question the command. Leaping out from the safety of his protective barrier, the Sylveon launches himself at the fluttering Oricorio and attempts to pin it to the ground and sink sharp fangs in deep for a draining kiss.[break][break]

Mopping up the rest of the Ghost-type Pokémon appeared to be easier for Florian and Sarah than it was keeping Ratatoskr still in his arms. Dazed and confused, the Emolga seemed to think it had been captured by an opponent— despite the fact that its injuries had been mostly healed by the very same 'assailant' it struggled against. "Ugh, Toskr, seriously?" Sig groaned, the flying squirrel's clawed paw pressed against his face. "It's me!"

"Emmol!" It slurred in protest, squirming as much as possible before its cheek sac began to emit tendrils of electricity. "EMMOOL!" And, together, Pokémon and trainer were suddenly enveloped in a bolt of electricity that left the latter's hair erratically spiked up after it was over.

"Ughhhh..." He groaned, somehow still holding the Emolga in his lap before collapsing sideways in a heap.

"Did we win?" He weakly, and deliriously, asked of his companions.

"Emmolll..."

"Yeah... I think." Sarah answered Sigmund. So far as she could tell, all of the ghost types had been dealt with which meant that they had succeeded in some effort. Sarah stood with her Slowbro, his dopey face providing a degree of security. Thanks to the light screen that had been put up, Dopey had been kept relatively safe. [break][break]

"That Sylveon of yours was super handy," Sarah said. She held out Dopey's pokeball and pointed it in the direction of her pokemon. The beam of red light admitted from him and enveloped the pokemon to return it into the pokeball.[break][break]

The sudden calm after chaos might have been eerie if not for the hilarious situation unfolding between Sigmund and Ratatoskr: Florian emerges from his cover and raises a hand to his mouth to stifle a giggle.

"Poor dear," he says of the Emolga.

Sarah confirms their victory, and Florian's smile is bashful in response to the compliment. Joli is far less humble, letting out a contented trill.

"He is very protective! Aren't you, darling?"

To be completely honest, Sigmund hadn't heard most of what his companions had said while in the midst of his daze. Instead, he focused the maximum of his current mental capacity towards picking himself back up. His Emolga, still slightly confused and in a daze himself, didn't struggle this time as his trainer scooped him up off the ground. Now sitting up on the grass, Sigmund placed the dizzy Emolga on his lap as he recovered, rubbing his eyes before smoothing out his hair as best he could.

By the time he managed to stagger up onto both feet with his Emolga in his hands, Florian asked if any of them would like any of his berries. The lad meekly raised his hand. The older gentleman seemed to naturally inspire that sort of student-like behavior. He'd definitely drew out the awe of both Sarah and Sigmund with his tactics with Sylveon. "I... I could use a persim berry for Toskr, if ya got one..." He weakly laughed, stumbling towards him.

The imbalanced steps he took, however, would come to a sudden stop when he noticed something peculiar:

The peach tree, once black and wizened, now appeared to be glowing with newfound life. It was hardly discernible, but the wood appeared to be shifting into a rich, dark brown from its black tint. The leaves appeared to be slightly more vibrant. And the few peaches that hung on the tree appeared to have grown... larger, since he'd last seen them? "They say peach trees protect against evil spirits..." He spoke, sharing even more of his supernatural knowledge past the fact that Litwick hypnotize people with their flames and suck souls.

"If I had to guess, I'd say the ghosts were attracted to its life-force..."

Granted, Sarah was perfectly aware that Sigmund very rarely put Toskr into its pokeball in the first place, but even still it would serve a purpose when the alternative meant using a perfectly good berry instead. In any case, Sarah had already returned her pokemon into his pokeball and was sure that the Slowbro would recover in no time.[break][break]

Sarah didn't respond in respect to Sigmund's comment, because if Peach trees had any ability to protect people from spirits then this particular tree was doing a really crummy job.

Sarah seems dismissive of the call for a persim berry, but Florian is undeterred.[break][break]

"Oh, it's all right!" he insists, flicking his wrist in a carefree gesture before digging into his pouch of homegrown berries to find the correct one. He holds it out to Sigmund with a smile. "If anything, your little darling deserves the treat after that!"[break][break]

Perhaps his Sylveon and the Slowbro were better-equipped for such an intense fight, but Toskr had tried his best and that was all that mattered to Florian.[break][break]

Once he'd ensured that everyone was well taken care of, he offers a final smile and takes his leave.
