The girl walked down the beach, closely flanked by her furry friend. Armed only with a backpack half her size, she stared straight ahead as she announced her precense. “It’s a solid plan, Rudi! If we’re going to make it rain metaphorically, we need to make it rain literally! And since you can do that, we need a team of fighters that thrive in said rain! If we can do that and train hard, then through a series of events I haven’t quite figured out yet, our money problems will be solved! Hopefully! Probably! But first, we need to actually get those Pokemon out. That’s where I’m counting on yooooooou aren’t even listening to me, are you?”

She turned around to find that her partner had stopped to dance a dozen feet behind her. Where the carefree Pokemon had even learned the Macarena, she had no idea, but it was had for her to stay annoyed at the sight of it. Instead her mouth was left open as she tried and failed to find the right words for her... energetic partner.

time to hunt that shiny for ya![break]

It was a lovely day to visit the beach. After the rough weather they'd been having throughout the month of December, the sun on his skin and the sand between his toes were welcome sensations. He carries his sandals loosely in one hand, the other fruitlessly grasping at empty air when a salty breeze snatches the sun hat from his head.[break][break]

He laughs, unperturbed. "After it, Joli!"[break][break]

Trainer and Sylveon dash as one down the beach, the latter leading the charge with his ribbons fluttering in the wind.[break][break]

Said wind rudely deposits Florian's hat in the surf, and he's shaking the water and seafoam from its surface when he spots a familiar figure close-by.[break][break]

"Allo, miss Annie!" He lifts his free hand to wave, the other still clutching the dripping hat. He grins, gesturing to the dancing Pokemon. What a character it was! "Is that charming Ludicolo yours?"

The voice was foreign but still familiar. She turned and matched it with a friendly face. “Professor Fairy, hey! And Joli too!” She waved with her whole arm. So did Rudi, though her feet still danced. Judging by her unchanging wide-mouthed grin, there was a good chance that she was only doing it to mimic her trainer. Annie shot her Pokemon a suspicious glance, but decided against anything further.

“Charming is one of the words I might use to describe her. It’s not the one that’s coming to mind right now.” Rudi switched focus again, waving to the ocean-dwellers that waded along the coast. “But yeah, she’s mine. More of a lover than a fighter, but she’s just as good at both when she wants to be.” The Ludicolo proved her trainer right in short order; when Annie looked again, she’d found a dancing partner in a swollen-headed turtle.

“Oh, so you were listening!” Annie’s grin grew to match the dancer’s as she approached, dropping to one knee beside the Chewtle. “Hey, little dude. We’re going on an adventure to dance and make it rain. Does that sound fun to you?” She couldn’t tell whether the wild one was nodding or bobbing its head to a beat she couldn’t hear. Judging by the Pokeball she retrieved, she chose to assume it was the former.

Joli seems delighted that the girl remembers his name, letting out a musical chirp to return the greeting. Deciding that he's shaken off as much of the moisture as he can manage, Florian gives his hat an experimental sniff — thank goodness, it didn't smell of dead Magikarp — and sets it back on his head.[break][break]

Florian giggles as he watches the Ludicolo. "She is causing you some trouble, I imagine!"[break][break]

It seems like the Ludicolo suffers from selective hearing, a problem Florian's become well-acquainted with thanks to his Rapidash. Laverre had one of the worst temperaments he'd ever seen![break][break]

"You are basing a team around rain?" he queries, watching from the corner of his eye as Joli dodges the poisonous fangs of a Sharpedo and fires a moonblast to scare it back into the sea. "That sounds interesting! Are you looking to take the gym challenge with it, or is it just for fun?"

Rudi was doing anything but causing trouble… In Rudi’s mind. Judging by Annie’s sigh, the professor was right on the money. “I can’t stay mad at her. She just… marches to her own beat. Can’t say that I’m a stranger to that, or it rubbing people the wrong way.” Even as Annie spoke, the living sombrero continued her jig, pausing only to beckon another Pokemon over. And Joli. And Florian. And Annie, even if she was three feet away.

“Oh, you heard that?” She eagerly nodded. “That’s the plan! I wanted to fight the gym in Slateport, so I trained a bunch of Pokemon to do great in the snow and hail...” She started bouncing her knees in time with her partner as she stood up. “And then I thought, I’ve already got so many Pokemon, so why not get some of them to specialise in all types of weather? Every great trainer’s got some sort of theme, so mine can be ‘weather’!” Two fingers on each hand swayed with the rhythm.

“If you’re looking for Pokemon that are strongest around water, then the beach is the best place to start, right?” As if on cue, a splash of water a dozen feet away marked the arrival of a creature, springing out of the ocean. It landed before the two dancers – one of them having only just realising she’d been infected. Oh well. She was happy to go with it, even as the Frogadier stared them down. Then took a few steps closer. A younger Annie might have taken that as her sign to attack, but the professor had taught her the value of letting a wild beast be curious. Patience and pacifism, more often than not, paid off, as the newcomer would prove. After a few seconds of hesitation, she drew closer… and joined their dance.

“And nobody knows a water-type better than another water-type, even if Rudi really… really doesn’t act like it!” The Ludicolo let out a call that sounded like agreement, though she was just as likely responding to the sound of her name. “Huh. Now that I think about it, somebody said that to me the other day. Anyway! How about it, Second Little Dude?” She crouched down again, swaying her head from side to side. “We’re heading out to dance, kick butt and hopefully eat a lot of food. If any of those interest you, then this is for you!” Another Pokeball was retrieved from her pocket and offered to the frog.

Being relatively new to Hoenn, Florian's only familiar with a couple of the gyms. He hadn't been aware that Slateport even had a gym, and he tilts his head.

"Is Slateport an ice-type gym?"

She'd mentioned snow and hail, and he figures that would be a logical conclusion. Or perhaps she was planning to go on the offensive against grass or dragon-types.

"I only know of Verdanturf and Fortree's gyms," he confesses. "Do you have any badges? A weather theme sounds incredibly interesting!"

It was always inspiring to see trainers thinking outside of the box. He'd learned through various advertisements and gushing fans that Kyle Lopez of the Elite Four trained canines of all sorts. He'd met the man (and many of his dogs!) decorating Christmas trees in Slateport.

Florian seems delighted at the appearance of Frogadier.

"They are from Kalos, did you know?" He favoured the Fennekin line, personally, but all three of Kalos' signature Pokemon held a special place in his heart. They remind him of home. "Ah, and she is a wonderful dancer! Look at that!"

Florian, meanwhile, finds his attention drawn to a tiny pink ball that's also joined in on the dance. It's a bit of a copycat, only mimicking the moves of others, but it's trying ever-so-hard to impress. He giggles and bends down to pick it up.

"Aren't you adorable? Ah, I could just take you home! ... Could I?"

She responds by planting a sweet kiss on his cheek, and the professor laughs as he retrieves a Pokeball.

“Good question! I don’t think it’s just an ice-type gym, but it had a whole list of challenges. I picked the ice one, obviously.” She may have missed the part where the gym-leader used ice-types, not the challenger. “There’s a bunch more gyms. Like, at least six. I’ve got the badge from Oldale Town. Broke my arm trying to get that one, but I think it’s healed up alright!” She stretched her right arm into the air to demonstrate. It was one of the many advantages of being a young trainer – she could bounce back from most anything, given enough time to rest.

“So while I was waiting on that getting fixed, I started training up my guys for more gyms. If I don’t break something else, then I’ll get enough badges to be halfway to being Hoenn’s champion.” She eagerly nodded, as if the only challenge that could stand in her way were more nights in the hospital. In her mind, that was probably the case.

Her eyes fell to the recently-filled Pokeball. “Kalos sounds like it has some really cool Pokemon! I’d love to go down and visit there some day.” Before she could think about holiday plans, she’d need to get steady income, but she chose to push those thoughts aside while the professor was around. Instead she leaned forward to watch his new friend earn a place in his team.

“This friendliness thing really works wonders. I’m glad you showed it to me! Everybody’s a little less tired at the end of the day, and even the guys I don’t catch end up being cool friends!” Case in point, the Ludicolo behind her waving to a Pelipper flying overhead. The big bird didn’t look too interested in dancing, but she bellowed a friendly call as she went on her way.

Florian's eyes are wide, all thoughts of Slateport's gym disappearing in a haze of alarm. What sort of barbaric gym challenge could lead to such a dangerous conclusion? Annie seems to have recovered, at least, showing off the regained movement in the previously-broken arm, but his horror does not abate at the sight.[break][break]

"W-What kind of gym do they run in Oldale?"[break][break]

'If I don't break something else,' she says, so casually that Florian can hardly believe his ears. He had a lot of respect for the fiery determination and bravery of trainers, especially as young as Annie, but he couldn't relate for the life of him.[break][break]

His gaze is soft at the thought of home.[break][break]

"A wonderful region," he sighs, and then seems to reconsider, wrinkling his nose. "Provided you don't wind up stuck in Snowbelle. It's freezing there! Gorgeous, but... far too cold."[break][break]

As Florian kneels in the surf, to assist a Clamperl that's washed up tangled in a net, he glances up and smiles at her thanks. It delights him to know that there's one more trainer in the world willing to assess a wild Pokemon's disposition before going all-out in a battle.[break][break]

"You are most welcome," he gushes, carefully maneuvering bits of rope around the Clamperl's shell. It provides its thanks in a language he can't speak, but he can detect the relief. "You are as well, little one. You must be close to evolving..." It doesn't fit well in the confines of its shell, which is scored with signs of battles prior. "Lucky that didn't happen with this net around you!"[break][break]

Freeing it from the last of the ropes, he winds them around a strap of his bag. He's not about to cast them back into the sea, where they might harm other Pokemon.[break][break]

"Would you care to join me?"[break][break]

He taps it with a ball to accompany the question.

The man seemed surprised, and that was enough to draw a confused look out of her. “There was an option to just battle the gym leader, but that sounded too normal. So the alternative way-“ She checked off each of the steps with her fingers while her hips continued to sway with Rudi’s body. “She drugged me. Dumped me in the middle of a forest. Took most of my stuff, and told me to survive the night. I had three of my Pokeballs, the clothes on my back and… No, that was about it.”

Perhaps it wouldn’t be too surprising that Annie managed to sound pretty chipper about the experience. In her mind, the fact that she’d mostly known what she was getting into meant that it was still a step up over escaping Kanto. Even after that, for a girl that had gone years without a permanent home, another night in the wilds wasn’t much of a threat. “Oh! I had a flare in case I was about to die or something, but I never needed it.”

”…I guess none of that explains my arm.” Rudi nodded behind her, shortly before showing her moves to a Simipour swimming past. “Any good survival trainer knows that your first priority in the wilderness is finding shelter! So I went looking for that. Turns out a Pokemon had the same idea, and he wasn’t too friendly. Florian can't help but to be astounded at the casual way Annie describes being drugged, robbed, and essentially kidnapped, like it's the most normal and acceptable thing in the world. He supposes that the League must keep tabs on the gyms and ensure that nothing untoward went on within their practices, but — but still![break][break]
