his eyes watch the battle despite the chaos that's blooming in front of them, analyzing, understanding. the moment the riolu reveals itself he knows this isn't a battle: this is an ambush. and he walked right into it. the realization is amusing and calls for concern but he refuses to give it. this isn't a fight he wants, nor one he's interested in, but it's one he's forced to participate in.

riolu's intervention is more of an annoyance as it does little damage. another SWORDS DANCE prepares escavalier for another attack.

"know what?"

his question is asked only to further agitate the man. nikolai knows. and it's fucking facetious.

"no, i fucked them."

a click made with his tongue echoes loud enough for his team. the two redirect their focus onto one target: the blastoise. the arc made by the HYDRO PUMP is ignored as they charge straight at the slow water-type. a quick LEAF STORM aimed at slowking and riolu look to distract, allowing them to finalize their assault.

shiftry drops his shoulder and uses the momentum to send a LEAF STORM that encapsulates escacvalier's X-SCISSOR.

nikolai stands on his lonesome but still he does not cower. the smirk on his face spills his enjoyment.

she smells good. it's what he notices when she reaches across him for the bottle that he had so precariously placed. her words are almost missed but the gist of it is understood. drinking has long been too boring for him; the only thing gained is the opportunity to forget, even if only temporarily. sometimes it doesn't even work.

"alright, alright." for once, he agrees. he places his glass in front of him and gestures at it. "drink with me. i'll make it worth your while." his head's already groggy but he manages to keep awake; his desire to bed her wills him to.

still, the weight carries him backwards until his back hits the ground again. he slowly exhales, eyes trying to stabilize the spinning in his vision. he extends a hand over to her and creeps his fingers up, dancing along her waist.

"you can't be drinking all my booze, though, darling." he shifts his head enough to be able to peer at her. "what's in it for me?" his hand lays atop his body, open, as if waiting for her to hand him his drink. a little gesture accompanies.

escalation happens at the refusal to communicate, leaving him with no choice but to react. two pokemon springs forth from their ball. it's a classic two on two, at least for now. but given how quickly things escalated he won't be shocked if there are surprises waiting for him around the corner. he doesn't expect this fight to be clean only for one reason:

there's rage behind his words; whether it's justified remains unknown as he delves into the battle.

"targets."

shiftry's WHIRLWIND is conjured up as quickly as the HYDRO CANNON pumps. the sudden gust of wind is enough to combat the water, meeting it head-on only to overpower it. the wind allows the water to engulf it, turning the stream of water into a literal water tornado that lingers near the middle.

another swipe summons a powerful LEAF STORM compiled of RAZOR LEAVES. it soars straight across, ignoring the tornado in the middle to target the opposition.

nothing scares him, not even the sight of a HYDRO PUMP. escavalier positions himself correctly, using his entire body as a shield as he tanks the water attack. it hurts but this is what he trained for. both his lances split the water into two as he jets towards the slowking. SWORDS DANCE under the cover of the stream of water allows escavalier a chance of a sneak attack.

an X-SCISSOR is delivered once escavalier reaches the end of the HYDRO PUMP.

meanwhile, nikolai hasn't moved.

"is someone angry?"

he wipes off stray water droplets that splashed onto his face from the slowking's attack, more annoyed than anything. he doesn't hide his scowl. "like i said, i don't remember you, hotshot." the man doesn't stir up any memories; maybe some are too far repressed.

"so cut the tough guy shit and enlighten me, yeah?"

arrogance is a double-edged sword.

the buzzing of his phone goes unnoticed at first, lost in the vast sounds that get filtered out by the internal numbing in his ears. the vibration travels across the ground but it's still not enough. five minutes turn to twenty. twenty turn to forty. and soon enough, he's passed out in the middle of his gym, on this little patch of land surrounded by water and rocks, isolated from the rest of the world.

it is his favorite spot; or was, depending on the timeline.

it's not until one of his gym trainers wakes him up does he find the unopened text on his phone. a slide of the screen makes his heart sink. the words mean nothing but that's not what draws him in: it's the videos.

he doesn't sleep that night. how can he? the things he's spent years running from have finally come back with a vengeance.

his blood runs cold and stays that way.

10/16/18 13:30, victory road.

he abandons his post to confront ghosts of his past; it's a mistake that would prove fatal. not unfamiliar to the caverns, he has no trouble navigating through the intricate layout of victory road. the vagueness in the message is understood because he knows the vicinity. he knows what lies in the middle of victory road.

a break in the ceiling allows sunlight to shine in, casting shadows over the dark path. it covers his approach well enough. his head tilts the moment he sees a sole figure standing in the middle of the room, basking in the sunlight like he has no care in the world.

he doesn't recognize him.

it's not rocket.

then who?

"cute text the other night." the dark shades under his eyes are hidden until he steps into the sunlight. despite the internal mess he's in, his persona exudes arrogance and charm; nothing short of expected. "i don't know you."

a pause.

"introduce yourself, hotshot."

this one's different. the change in the air is almost instant and undeniable: the power. he keeps his mouth shut because he wants golex to learn what true power is.

there's a glimmer in the sky that tells him what's coming. he sees it despite its speed: an aerodactyl with its IRON HEAD. it moves too fast for golex to even think about reacting. the impact sends him pummeling into the ground.

it brings a smile to nikolai's face.

"get up, golex." it's enough to urge the armaldo to continue battling. golex is strong but not powerful; the difference is evident when he shoots a BRINE to combat aerodactyl's IRON HEAD.

it doesn't work.

golex almost faints from the impact. he goes to stand only to have a ROCK SLIDE fly towards him. the red from the pokeball saves him before he's crushed to death. aerodactyl isn't to be toyed with.

flash of white summons his lance.

"target."

SWORDS DANCE into X-SCISSOR sinks the dinosaur out of the sky. escavalier's damage is not to be trifled with. aerodactyl's head glows silver and so too does knave's.

IRON HEAD versus IRON HEAD can only produce one victor.

there's no doubt. a pokeball is thrown.

there's a reason why the SANDSTORM is more violent than usual, and the reason soon comes to fruition. armaldo's BRINE is what finishes off the onix. the rock snake roars in pain before succumbing to the damage, fainting only to fall smack against the sand, which is where the source of the storm resides.

the impact forces the hippowdon out of the ground. with its slumber interrupted, its anger is justified. an EARTHQUAKE shakes the ground, splitting it in places but nikolai stands his ground. armaldo's HARDEN prepares him for the damage only to return it in full with a BRINE.

golex follows the hot stream of water, swift and agile for another CRUSH CLAW. the ground-type returns with a CRUNCH but it's to no avail as a final BRINE sinks the hippowdon.

"the ruins?" it takes him a moment; far too long, really; before it lights up in his head. "oh! i remember. yeah, we're not doing that tonight." the tiredness makes him give in as he moves to lay flat on his back. he holds the glass of liquor still in his hands, placing it atop his chest as he stares up through the skylight and at the stars.

he reminisces of home, of the stars that were once visible in the night skies of kanto. they seemed to have disappeared around the same time as rocket—no. not tonight. her voice saves him.

it brings him back to life as he rises to an upright position. he immediately shifts closer to her. "you think? no, no, no, darling—" he quickly downs his liquor and wipes the corners of his mouth again. he spills when he's drunk. "you would rather be doing this. no uncertainty. you have to be sure."

he doesn't go to refill her drink. instead, he edges closer and closer, letting his alcohol-infused breath taint the bare surface of her skin. "can you be sure for me, sveva?"

the SANDSTORM is unforgiving in nature and yet he's in the thick of it, challenging it with a reckless attitude. it's his arrogance that drives him forward, that powers each step of his through the rough sand. his feet may sink but his ego never will. he won't be beaten by the storm.

his hands shake and it's not from the cravings. "target." golex doesn't need instructions. the armaldo bolts forward with his CRUSH CLAW, slashing it against onix's stone shell of a body. the impact sends tremors across the desert field but he stands strong. he does not waver.

he cannot.

she downs the liquor as easily as he did. he watches because he's curious, interested; he wants to know more. he can already feel the heaviness in his head but he won't stop now. he's mid-pour when she tells him to. he does the same to his glass.

this one doesn't go down as easy. he clears his throat after; the burn keeps him awake and alive. "you owe me one." he wipes the corners of his mouth with the back of his hand, glass still between his fingers. "don't keep me waiting, sveva."

he's already pouring them another shot while he waits, keen on her answer.

the situation escalates in a manner he's not prepared for, both physically and mentally. loud noises and high adrenaline-inducing activities don't go hand in hand with nursing a hangover. briar's loud voice rams itself right into his skull, bouncing off and echoing for what feels like too long. the loud, obnoxious blaring of the alarm does little to help soothe him.

"will he now?" he has to suppress the urge to roll his eyes. for such a pretty face she sure does have a loud mouth and an even louder personality. responsibility urges him into the limelight and for once, he hates the attention.

ALICE: alert, lockdown, inform, counter, evacuate. it's what they teach for more serious threats but it'll have to do. they've done the first three, and now they're on the fourth: counter.

but how does one counter an enemy that's unknown?

consider everyone an enemy.

"the beautiful cadet briar will secure the lobby while ha and i go for a little trip down to the scientists." he shoots daggers at the staff. "you will take us down."
