one of his pokemon barks, and then the rest follows. his eyes follow the object of their attention and it goes to another mightyena.

kyle was approaching when he spots the dark-type's trainer nearby. eyes light up when he sees the costumes of his lycanrocs. they aren't the stereotypical costumes at least.

"hello," he greets, posturing his camera in front of him to signal his intent. "can i take a picture with your dogs?"

if the totally spies were pokemon, they'd definitely be fighting-types.

slateport has hosted a costume party at their local park, inviting everyone for the dog socializing event. everyone had to come in costume, and it meant both the trainer and their dogs.

kyle, who hasn't actually bothered to buy a costume, goes in with his police uniform. he already fixed some of his to be more comfortable so it wasn't identical to the official one anyways.

the rest of his dogs were also in costume. kyle has spent more time deciding what they are supposed to be than his own costume, and even though a lot of the other dogs will be in similar costumes, they won't be in a same group as his mightyenas, or as they are called tonight, the paw patrol.

with a camera, kyle walks around trying to find other people with dogs of interesting costumes, some of which include the classics such as mummies/shapeshifters/vampires. temp will be one of the people kyle will find in this party.

an espurr appears on their walk. the urge to kick it like the gif comes to him, but he's not a fighting-type so he stops himself.

"this is it." he turns to his spectrier. "do you want to stay?"

despite not answering, it remains in the vicinity. kyle smiles as he takes the horse's answer.

the espurr, on the other hand, chooses to cling to kyle. the urge gets stronger, before he realizes there's a collar on the pokemon. he lowers himself to the ground and checks the tag. a name on one of the grave markers fits the returnee name on the back.

"um, you don't really fit my team..." it continues to bury itself by hugging kyle's leg. "ugh, fine."

he pats the espurr, who seemed unsurprisingly tame. not surprising from a pokemon that was most likely a pet. it wouldn't be one if it stays with kyle, but he supposed he can give it away as a gift or something.

"i can't really leave you behind here when ghost-types will eat you alive, huh?"

a pokeball is offered, and it is taken.

"hmm, you're serious, confident and you're actually trying." he analyzes her right in front of her. his conclusion is vague, but not something that can be said to everyone.

"rather than a death wish, i'd say it's more like you're trying to live than just survive." he raises a brow, accompanied with a smirk. "you can't really say you lived if you play it safe, right?"

the solgaleo cloaks itself in fire like it's a fire-type and attacks the tsareena in its moment of getting distracted. heat crash crashes towards the tsareena in the background.

"i get why you're friends with matias now." he sheathes his knife. "you're not boring. i don't have to carry a conversation alone, even though we have nothing in common."

it's a subtle jab on how he treats his own life.

a natu flies nearby, perching on one of the gravestones to stare at kyle and his horse.

"then, do you want to join me visit the comrades?"

as soon as the carrot disintegrates within the spectrier's gastro acid, it gets up and nods its head. it postures to let kyle take a ride on its back, but the champion motions for a no.

"nah, let's just walk there." he turns to the natu. "you can come too."

the wild natu flies away instead.

"tch."

kyle wanders around mt. pyre with a carrot in hand, which goes to a certain horse that lingers around the site.

"oh, you're here."

the moment it shows up, he offers the carrot. the spectrier, who emerged from the shadows, approaches for kyle's treat. it was still busy chewing on it, digesting it with its gastro acids, when kyle asks a follow-up question.

"how busy is it around here?"

the horse nods its head. kyle just now realizes how bad he worded his question for a pokemon who can't communicate with him.

working on halloween night was a blight of his existence. it honestly should be considered a toxic work environment when they get forced to work during one of the more fun holidays.

he follows a scent trail of where the missing children were supposed to be. it leads deeper into the more forested areas of verdanturf, just near where a neighborhood where trick or treating was about to start, and it was important to investigate a reason before the time comes.

enter kyle.

after being asked to investigate by locals rather than the authority, he and his mightyena stumbles upon another individual on the way. perhaps they are attracted by the mystery from the rumors of missing children, or maybe the leaking interdream mist nearby was the invitation. either way, kyle approaches them.

"hello," he greets. "do you know anything about the supposed missing children?"

to have the two fire-types side-by-side on a memorial that commemorates her seemed like a nice visual for his eyes. it'll definitely be the centerpiece of mt. pyre for a while.

"then i'll wait for it when you set it up."

if he's offering to make something extra such as that, then she must've been that important to him. kyle can't find himself offering to help when he might disturb a personal moment.

his watch rings, reminding him that he might have spent too much time playing games and that he needs to head back soon.

"oops, i have to go." as he heads to the exit, he turns briefly to lars. "better make it pretty. she's all about the effort," he teases.

"i'm not really sure," kyle answers. "i can help with farming tickets too if you want."

it's an excuse to play more games, but...

"i can just give this to you instead." he takes the small moltres and offers it to lars.

at the end of the day, it doesn't matter if he gives this to her or not. she wasn't shallow when it comes to gifts anyways.

"maybe that one." kyle points at moltres. "i'm visiting mt. pyre soon and maybe that's a good gift."

he's not the type to follow traditions to the heart, but it was fun in concept nonetheless.

"i think she can have something fancier than flowers, though she probably doesn't mind those either."

stormy silph. she was a friend to both of them, and a victim of the drk triad.

"now, let me do my magic."

kyle cracks his fingers before he inserts a coin for an attempt. it takes a few calculated attempts to calibrate himself with how the machine works. it normally was a waste of money, but aqua pays a lot and he has nothing else to spend it on.

he hyperfixates on the claw machine until he eventually snags one after multiple attempts. a sigh of relief marks his victory.

"but i'm already comfy..."

the whining ends abruptly as he lazily gets up from the couch. scratching his belly with one hand, kyle drags noah with the other with him on the way to investigate the commotion.

he opens the door down and flicks open the lights. he finds his silvally sleeping, and in the same room, noah's machamp.

"oh, yeah, didn't you tell me you're my bodyguard? why am i the one keeping you safe?"

kyle turns to the ring afterwards.

"wait, is that going to ruin our home again?" money wasn't the problem, but the inconvenience caused by repairs. "but i just got it fixed after that one rocket attack..."

he'd forgive the destruction if it turns out it's a source of infinity energy or something, though.

kyle sees a desecrated berry tree.

"entei?"

he looks around as he calls him by his name. the beast saunters in with a yawn, stretching in front of kyle after being called. he looks so lax when it's just the two of them that he wonders if he's the type to get comfortable around a person or if he's superficial enough to put up a front for others.

"i thought you were guarding the garden. why is this one dead?"

the pokemon lies down on the ground and blinks at kyle.

kyle realizes he's not getting an answer. he writes it off as his guardian being busy protecting him from the shadows when he got to more dangerous situations, and that this happened during one of those times.

"i may have lived and grew at verdanturf, but i'm still a city boy at heart."

his entire profile screams it. that was why he never stayed as a ranger even though he passed certifications. nature just wasn't his calling when he feels more comfortable in the city.

they have arcades after all, which was like his infinity energy.

"ooh, those are interesting." he takes a peek at the prizes, and finds the birds. he guesses lars might be here for the articuno. "these are usually rigged, but i can try until i get one."

he postures himself in front of the machine, taking a better look at what he will be working with.

"have you tried yet? how much have you spent already?"
