A lot could be said about a person judging by the state of their place of work, but admittedly, Tam had never been the sort of person to pay attention to such details, and to him, judging was of no interest at all. Nevertheless, the assault on the senses that was the scent of the Head Ranger’s electronic cigarette was noticed when entering the office, the Unovan’s nose wrinkling for a single second before his expression returned to neutrality and his gaze met that of his new boss.

”Anderson, yeah?” Acting polite for the sole sake of acting polite didn’t suit Tam. He wasn’t here to dance around topics, he was here to get a job done. ”Fawley. Looking forward to working with you.”

Warm. Too warm. Even if it was the middle of winter, even if recent events had altered Hoenn’s weather for the foreseeable future, the supposedly tropical region was still much warmer than the weather Tam had come to expect and know. Did it bother him? Make him regret his decision to move away from Icirrus City? No, but it was different, and different was alright sometimes.

Although, alright as it may have been, the wave of cool air that greeted him when entering the Lilycove ranger headquarters was pleasant indeed, and if Tam were the sort of person to wonder about such details, he would’ve questioned if they couldn’t afford heating to adjust the place to a temperature Hoennians apparently preferred or if Lilycove rangers were particularly fond of the cold for one reason or another.

Shame that the question didn’t even cross his mind.

He approached the front desk, calm as ever, and when meeting the gaze of the receptionist, a simple explanation was spoken:

The warmth of scattered sunlight that filters through a tree’s verdant canopy. The rustling of leaves with the touch of gentle breeze. The soft grass upon which herds of Deerling roam, their coats changing with the seasons. The distant sight of Dragonspiral Tower, rising high and filled with secrets.

When thinking of his childhood, of his home, of Unova, it’s not of his family’s ancient manor at the outskirts of Icirrus City that Tam thinks of. It’s of days spent at the nearby moor; of naps beneath trees, of watching the wild pokémon, of exploring the vast woods that lie north of Unova’s Route Eight.

It’s not that he ever had a particular liking for nature, that he was overly fond of pokémon, or that he considered himself to be adventurous. It was just that things were simpler that way. Nature was always quiet, pokémon were always easier to understand than people, and there was always something interesting happening in the forest.

If he were asked if he misses those days, if he feels nostalgic when thinking back, Tam really wouldn’t be able to say…

He didn’t love it. He didn’t hate it. When searching his feelings, all there is is nothingness.

There are so many things about which Tam feels nothingness. So many life experiences that seem as if they have no emotional significance. His childhood, his relationship with his family, school, his friendship (few and far between as they have been), his more romantic encounters, not even his days as a ranger back in the Unova region – none of it ever mattered much to him.

A void. One only a few things can fill. Like how training his pokémon sometimes does. Like how he had hoped moving to a place so different from his calm and quiet home might...
