He was right, like always.

But, again, Rory swallowed down the thought. Instead, she allowed his suggestion to consume her mind, smiling as she noticed an emptied wooden picnic table set out between a couple of the food stands.

"Sure! Let's sit over there."

When they walked over, instead of sliding into the opposite bench, Rory chose to hover, her eyes caught in the web of fairground delicacies served just a few meters away.

Her eyes returned to his.

"Actually, stay here. I want to get something sweet for us."

A pause.

"But don't look! Like, keep your eyes over here." She waved towards the carnival games, stretched out toward the opposite side of the fairgrounds. "I want it to be a surprise."

For the next 10 minutes or so, Rory spent her time waiting in two different lines. When she returned, it was not without two paper plates full of steaming delights.

She placed them onto the tablespace before sliding onto the opposite bench.

"I hope you like them."

"Well," She began, nerves already biting at her cheeks. There was no stopping the splotches of red from infecting her pale cheeks. The fact that James was now notably closer than before didn't help, too.

"My name's Rory Faust. I recently graduated from the University of Slateport with a bachelor's in mechanical and electrical engineering."

Uptalk infested her voice, turning confidence into a far-off dream she'd once conceived during a night's rest.

"I previously interned at..." Her mind drew to an abrupt pause. No matter how hard she searched, no answer arrived on her tongue. Whenever one did, one look into James' eyes was all it took for it to get lost again.

Eventually, she gave up.

"God, I'm awful at this."

Cheeks red, eyes squeezed shut, she buried her face into her hands.

The sight didn't surprise her. For as long as she'd known her brother, there wasn't another word that quite describes more than being a complete mess. Even if he tried passing it off to Greyson Connors , his roommate, Rory knew better than to fall victim to the gaslighting.

"Just water, please," she called over her shoulder. It's with two fingers she slowly plucked pieces of clothing from off the couch, tossing it back onto the ground before nestling into the crinkled leather. It squealed to her movement. "I wanted to talk to you about Mom."

The name rung more than a few bells. For someone as strictly bound to her morals as Rory, it was an abomination of science created for the greed-infested goal of ultimate power. Still, her allegiance to rocket had forced her into the role of the hypocrite, and thus she had already learned more than she ever wanted about the amalgamation of Pokémon parts.

"I know a bit, unfortunately," she forced a smile, eyes searching for comfort from the route's greenery, "I've worked with a few biomedical engineers on one. It's a harsh process. I don't know if there's currently an alternative."

Though, the same could be said about many other problems moments before a solution is born.

"You also have JAMES BAKER working on this, right?"

In the meantime, a stray houndoom had found its way onto their path. Rather than vicious, the pup took to a kinder, approaching Rory with a gentle hop. She reached down to pet his snout.

Those words brought out an ache strong enough to force Rory's hands loose. With a soft thud, the wooden spoon fell from her fingers, slamming down into the mixing bowl. At the same time, the young scientist had spun herself around to face him, hands reaching for his to offer not only comfort, but support in the way that screamed 'im here for you.'

"Yeah, well, I'll always be here for you, Cade."

Her bleeding heart had spun her into a fool. More than the fear she felt for his history of crimes, there was a deep-rooted desire to comfort another lonely soul.

"so you can count on me."

"yeah, okay."

It's no light work reigniting the small space craft. Between the wiring and mechanical aspects of setting the engine back into gear, Rory and Mawile spent several minutes dug into the depths of the cockpit. By the time she came back out, sweat coated her forehead, sticking the pieces of her bang against it.

Her face crinkled.

"I think I got it."

She gave the key a quick tug. The engine, while loud, does little to power up it's entirety. It simply chugged out a puff of smoke.

She tried again.

Nothing.

One last time.

As if the charms of 3 blessed their space craft, the engine roared to life with the final twist of the key, lighting up not only it's inner systems, but the lights adorning it's front and rear.

Poking her head out, Rory offed a half smile.

"Anyone wants a ride?"

Goosebumps raked the young woman's quivering body. Not only were they returning to this god-forsaken realm filled with extraterrestrial threats, but on the way over to the rift, JAMES BAKER had nonchalantly added the important tidbit of information that more members of AEO would also be in attendance.

So, not only would this be a test of her waning mental, but it would also act as a first impression for her colleagues.

"Sorry, sorry," she apologized, smiling through the constant waves of anxiety. Each time one would wash over her, another small misstep would lead her leaning either a smudge to the left or to the right. Luckily, there was always JAMES BAKER by her side.

"It's wolfgang volkov , right? It's pleasure to meet you! I'm Rory Faust ."

Her outstretched hand sought out his for a firm shake.

"The teeth? What? Of course not," she laughed, her rosy cheeks brightened by his gaze. "You just give similar vibes. I don't know how to put it."

She did, actually.

You're both cute.

But their possible shared future employment prohibited the words from ever escaping. They'd only serve to muddle the waters for what was meant to be a long, positive working relationship. Though, some might question why even go on this little expedition out to the fairgrounds if that was her stance on things. Rory, on the other hand, chose to ignore that aspect of today's adventure.

It was a bit nerve-wracking being left alone with James like this. He was a nice guy, there was no doubt about that, but in all the novels she'd read, something always first happens in situations like this. Behind closed doors, in the comfort of one's own bed.

In fact, she could easily pinpoint an exact scene from a recent novel she'd dug into that started the same way. They were lab partners, looking to get a project done, when the female lead dropped a pencil, to which the male lead also reached down to grab for her, bringing their hands together for the briefest kiss of a touch.

"Um, sure, sounds good."

She readjusted herself, turning her body to face him. Her hands folded on her lap.

"Ready when you are."

One hand reached for the Buizel, the other JAMES BAKER.

"Okay okay okay!"

Together, the three of them were freed to set off to the next stall, leaving behind nothing more than the scattered remains of joyous laughter.

"What do ya think?"

Bringing the plushie in front of her, she gave the small water type a good look down, searching for any loose threads. Carnival stalls were notorious for their low-quality product and as a plushie connaisseur herself, it was within her duties to ensure there wouldn't be any premature breakage of her newfound friend.

Suddenly, Rory brought them to a curt stop. She then scooted in front of him, holding up the Buziel close beside JAMES BAKER' head.

"He kind of reminds me of you."

She didn't even bother asking about his preference, as they were only one thing on the menu tonight: water and more water.

Skipping over to the corner of her room, she knelt beneath her bed and dug into a small gray mini fridge. It was kept snugged between her tucked drawers, just big enough to hold no more than a few bottles of water and some snacks. She pulled out two bottles and handed one over to him.

"Here."

Next, she grabbed the promised chips. Salt and Vinegar, just the way he liked them.

"And some snacks," she smiled, dropping it onto the bed. Next came her own body, as she gently slipped onto the corner of her bed, bringing her legs into a polite criss-cross. "So! How shall we start?"

There is much we still don't know - that was a statement that could describe multiple thoughts filtering through her mind. She questioned, more than what the game was detailing, whether what she was viewing was another piece of fiction, as a few of her routes had been, or if it was based in the same reality others sprung from.

And, if it were based on reality, how did Macro Cosmos become privy to such developments? To where did they even originate from? The league? Rocket? If it were rocket, she'd expect to at least hold some hint of what this organic being might've been.
