“Funny how that works, isn’t it?” Fern lifts one shoulder toward the tilt of their head. “Timing is a strange thing.” It is curious they’ve passed like ships in the night until now, but they’re certainly not about to complain now that they continue to collide. Fern welcomes the change, enjoys the comfort it brings.[break][break]

“I’m sure they’ll be fast friends, then,” they reply, and as if on cue, they can hear the happy, reptilian coos that are unmistakably Cecilia’s as she mirrors Vahagn’s circling. Quick to follow him about once their initial work is done.[break][break]

A shame, they almost tease with the curl of a smirk when Jayden says he isn’t out to run today. But Fern spares him that little bit of shamelessness for now. “Sounds sensible.” Fern definitely isn’t out here training, after all. Or at all.[break][break]

They recall the prior conversation they had with jayden cross about their mutual home—back when they were still practically strangers though even then it hadn’t quite felt that way to Fern. “I can understand that, so do it,” they pause, glancing over at him with a smaller smile.[break][break]

“It reminds me of the glimwood, you know?”[break][break]

Both the atmosphere and the pokemon who inhabit it. Like the froslass that peers out from behind a headstone. Rather call Ceci down on it, Fern stoops, attempting to coax the wary little thing out with friendliness. They look back up at their companion, “The ghosts are always the best part.”

For the most part, Fern remains silent as Tuesday speaks, and weighs the options presented to them. Save for a curious, murmured, “Is that so?” There’s risk in this; Fern isn’t blind to that.[break][break]

In all his life, he’s never committed a real allegiance to anything or anyone but for himself. His work has been done on his own. His work has been measured and deemed fit as a result of his own work. But he knows that if he is to accept this offer, it won’t be a faulty acceptance with loopholes for him to drop through when he sees fit.[break][break]

As fanciful and flighty as he often presents himself to be, Fern is not that stupid to think it possibly with a syndicate such as Rocket, new or old. Their loyalty is iron clad, and for once, Fern sees the benefit in seizing that opportunity to be involved and play a part.[break][break]

They’re inherently selfish, they do care about the reward that Tuesday makes mention of. But they read the meaning underneath–that it will not come simply. It will not be handed over to them, and they do not delude themselves into thinking they’re so entitled.[break][break]

Fern knows how to dig his heels in and work for what he acquires, though. He’s never been wealthy, he’s never wanted for nothing. He can prove his mettle, no matter how unconventional he himself is. When his hand lifts and clasps the contact’s, it’s unwavering.[break][break]

As is the evenness in his eyes as he meets Tuesday’s, flashing him a cheeky, lopsided grin and winking. “Sign me up then, chief.”

“It was,” they offer simply, though curiosity flares up in the wake of the subject. Fern himself wasn’t that involved, though he’s fully enjoyed the benefits and boost to his business that followed in wake of the city having total Rocket occupation in place. But that day they had remained tucked away, and only a silent observer of the aftermath once it was okay to skulk around again.[break][break]

But where had jayden cross been amid all of it? No doubt, he wouldn’t have made reference to it if he’d not been involved in some capacity. “Likely an unforgettable one, I gather,” they add with another slight shrug, a scrutiny of their own turn on the admin.[break][break]

In a space such as their home, however, Fern cannot hold to that somber nature for long. This is a haven, and while they have, they’ve never been fond of taking work along home with them. Personal, or Rocket affairs. So when the subject eases away, Fern allows it. Doesn’t continue to exacerbate the heaviness that they guess lurks under the surface.[break][break]

“Well, yes. I’ve had to manage somehow,” they say lightly, smiling as they watch him catch the flour bag. White powder poofs up in a small cloud from a loose edge. “A print shop,” Fern clarifies as they edge closer along the counter to reach and better arrange some of the ingredients.[break][break]

And maybe it’s also to draw a bit closer to him too. “Though it is a front for the actual business, yes.”[break][break]

Fern’s brows lift sharply, and a glint flickers through the blue-green of their eyes that has every look of a lightbulb lighting up in their mind. “Will youuuu help me then? I’m bound to burn them, or they’ll come out flat and jawbreaking.” Their head swivels to the side to look at him fully, grinning despite the puppy dog stare they level at him. “Don’t think I’m not above stressing you out to make your mood suit it.” Nose wrinkling at their own joke.

“Very good.” He’s certainly still as stoic as ever though, isn’t he?[break][break]

“Hm, in a way, I suppose I am,” they reply contemplatively, head tipped to the side as their chin droops down into the rest of a raised hand. Blue-green eyes dart to the underboss again and Fern smiles thinly. “I find it a bit meditative here.”[break][break]

Maybe a bit melancholically so, but all the same.[break][break]

Attention turning to the trevenant, their chin tips in the direction of a haunter flickering in and out of the corner of his vision, drifting along behind them and ducking behind tombs. Poplar stretches out its large, branchy limbs and swipes it with a umbral SHADOW CLAW, then snags it before it can so much as retaliate or dissipate. Fern aims a ball at it, relieving the haunter of Poplar’s twiggy clutches.[break][break]

There’s a certain sort of fondness in their grin as they meet jayden cross’s eye (though for place or person, they do not readily specify.) “Whenever I can find the time.” Which is not always often, but they manage. No Pokémon of their own rest here, but there’s a certain reverence to adhere to. A hush that settles even their antsier qualities.[break][break]

Not wanting to be left out or outdone, Fern’s own dragapult darts up into the air after the other. Curiously twisting through the chilled breeze as she studies, and then greets the shiny counterpart. “Hope they don’t mind the friendliness,” he remarks with an easy laugh as he points upward. “Ceci’s pretty social.”[break][break]

Fern calls her back down with a short whistle, though, when they catch a glimpse of steel from the corner of their eye. Ceci readily obliges, diving down sharp as a pin missile, colliding into the spotted doublade with dragon force. They use the following moment when the crossed swords flinch to follow with a pokeball. Their attention returns to jayden cross, glance flitting down then traveling upward in measured pace. “Out training?”

It comes as no great surprise that he skirts around the claim Fern makes, and they don’t mind that, really. They asked playfully, after all, and the fleeting smile is reward enough to let them know they weren’t out of bounds for saying what they did.[break][break]

“I am going to assume this is a particular area of interest for you,” they reply with a smile of their own, curious furthered by the way he speaks of them. Though he likely won’t, Fern secretly decided that they could listen to him speak of them for hours on end without minding a bit. “They are, it’s a shame they’ve diminished,” they agree quietly, allowing him the space to not press the matter.[break][break]

“Hm?” Fern’s attention turns back toward jayden cross, brows lifting slightly at the remark. “Yes, I was. What about it?” Like most things in his life, he learned to work around the after effects of the event. He’s made a life based on being flexible. It wouldn’t have done him any good to flounder in the wake of invasion—it was smarter to capitalize on what he could at the time.[break][break]

Fern can practically feel the acute way they’re being studied now, and there’s a prickle under their skin that comes along with it. Not exactly self-conscious, but hyper-aware of it. A wondering of what he’s hoping to find.[break][break]

“Oh, hah. No, I mean. Not exactly.” They let out a breath, cheeks puffing as they look over at him with a look that borders on goofy. “Make for a better cook than a baker, is all. I got roped into this by the owners of the shop next to mine.”

Didn’t have the heart to say no to the elderly couple, though they’d insist it was for the sake of maintaining his front. Both? They leaned back against the counter, hands bracing back against the curved edge. “Don’t suppose you are,” they say dry and offhanded, not really thinking anything serious of it.
