Sigurd joined the group upon the back of his Flygon. Traveling through the maze that was sure to lead them to the water.

One thing Sigurd, or more precisely his Flygon, made sure to do was mark the wall at proper intervals leading any civilians who would want to follow them in the right direction.

Even as Darkness encroached on them, only to be fought back with the help of their Pokémon, Sigurd and Flygon followed closely. Only for the light at the end of the tunnel to blind them.

But they continued without fear.

A cavern expanded before them. Quickly the group disturbed the peace of its dwellers. The Flygon landed gently upon the sandy ground.

Sigurd joined their leader in the surveying of the cavern as Maverick and Elaine did their thing. Moments went by before John proclaimed that this would be the place. As if Sigurd had merely been waiting for a command, he quickly asked. “Want me to fly back and fetch the others?”

“Aye, fine as can be.” Sigurd responded to the roll call. Words still affected by the sheer uselessness that he had displayed.

A surprisingly spirited clap on his back shook him out of the rut he found himself in. The grin contagious in its earnesty spread onto him. Sigurd stretched his back removing the slouch that had come to it.

He joined the rest of the group as their Captain held a quick meeting. Sigurd gave a pleased nod in Doug’s direction as the man remembered his surname.

A rest for the civvies was suggested. Sigurd thought that wise, he didn’t mind continuing on.

Rides were asked about. And everyone who hadn’t already summoned one of their own. Sigurd didn’t. Instead he patted the back of the Flygon by his side as he said “I will stick to Frigg here.” Before climbing atop the Flygon once more.

The Flygon clearly didn’t mind.

“Well, I am as ready as can be.” Sigurd replied, having now gotten nice and comfy on the Flygon’s back.

The Oasis was fake. That was obvious. Yet they continued toward it. Sigurd was confused for a moment, but decided to trust in the process or at the very least the person calling them shots.

He leaned back into his seating and waited leisurely as they approached their destination. This was a mistake. The tires of the vehicle lost its footing and began to fall rather abruptly. Before Sigurd could even perceive that Doug had begun to save all the hapless victims, them included, he retrieved his Flygon and summoned the insectoid dragon.

The Flygon grabbed him and saved him from his would-be death, had Doug not already begun to apply his own gravity to the whole situation.

By the time his head cooled enough to get an overview of the situation, everything was under control.

Sigurd sighed.

His complete and utter lack of helping Doug save anyone awoke something within his mind. It was the voice of his father sternly reminding him that he ought to be better than that, be more proactive. He shouldn’t be such a burden to the team.

Flygon eased its way down, landing just behind their falling vehicle. It allowed its trainer to stand on his own two feet while it took stock of things going on around it.

A sigh of relief escaped Sigurd. For a short unnecessary moment, he had feared they might have to trek through these arid lands. But no, luckily they had brought vehicles capable of trekking the place. And they even had a Pokémon guide, well things were truly looking up.

As soon as he was allowed to, he jumped onto one of the Vehicles and made himself comfortable. Eyes gazing out into the distance as they drove, following the directions of the Vaporeon.

The sound of Doug’s voice over the comm allerted him. He looked out in the same direction as Doug, but at first he saw nothing, then slowly it appeared an oasis.

Unfortunately any hopes of an oasis so easily found was dashed even before he could respond when Elaine came with sound arguments and the Vaporeon confirmed it.

A defeated sigh escaped Sigurd.

He turned his longing gaze away from the empty promise and in the direction that they were going. Wondering how long it would take before they would stumble upon the water they so desperately craved.

Sigurd looked up into the bright sky.

Another damned desert. Why the higher ups picked him for this was beyond him. He was more of a cold-kinda guy. His primary Pokémon, a Flygon, was known to inhabit deserts, and Houndoom was a fire type. Didn’t mean that he enjoyed the bloody heat.

Not to mention the sand. So coarse and rough, and it was surely going to get everywhere. He wondered how long it’d take for it to find its way into his boots.

The voice of the mission lead pulled his attention away from his old sci-fi references. After a quick pad down to make sure all the equipment was there. He would announce his presence at the roll call and continue to listen to the instructions.

“Just walking into that desert might not exactly be good idea?” He stated, perhaps a bit too casually. “Did anyone bring a Pokémon that can sense nearby water sources?” Surely there was a Pokémon that could do that right, Pokémon could do all sorts of convenient things.

It seemed they had come to an understanding. Taking a deep breath of air, Sigurd felt strangely relieved for a moment. He didn’t like to snap at people like that, especially not those with good reason to do so.

Her hesitation was now understandable. He prepared himself for some continued hesitation as the woman finally made her appearance. But appear she did. And Sigurd was quick to follow her to the nearby examination room. While she was washing her hands, he was already half way over at the table.

“This will hurt, but please bear it.” Sigurd informed the canine fire-type.

The Male Houndoom mewled lightly, as it readied itself to take the pain of movement once more.

While Sigurd tried to be gentle, swinging an adult male Houndoom from his shoulder and onto an examination table gently was a difficult task. But the Houndoom took the pain, knowing that its trainer would do it no harm without good cause.

“Sure, I can do that.” Sigurd retrieved a nylon muzzle from his pocket. He looked toward the Houndoom. It didn’t seem pleased, but whether it was from the pain or the muzzle that was about to be put on it was hard to tell.

It tried to dodge the muzzle a few times, but at last gave in and allowed Sigurd to tie the nylon muzzle tightly. With the muzzle on, Sigurd looked almost pleadingly toward the doctor, as he petted the Houndoom to calm it.

Perhaps if one of the most important Pokémon to him weren’t currently whimpering on his shoulders with a badly wounded leg, then he would’ve been calm enough to get the message across. Perhaps he would even have considered his words carefully.

Unfortunately, calm was not a word in his vocabulary right now. He was THIS close to just erupting on the poor Lizard when a voice appeared from behind the door.

His eyes shot toward it, but noticed the door stayed closed.

The addition of a new voice brought some calmness to him. Clearly, he had the attention of a doctor now, which was all he wanted. Her accompanying explanation did make him feel bad. But that didn’t change the fact that HIS Pokémon was wounded.

“Damn… I. I am sorry, but yes, it’s a Houndoom! And it’s bad. We are talking Angry-Scyther-Attacking-With-intention-to-harm bad.” Sigurd replied. It had been a miracle that it was only the left leg that had been granted the honor of a long deep gash. And it was another miracle that his shoddy bandage work had even worked as well as it had so far.

A Goofy grin smeared itself on Sigurd’s face as Remy praised him for a job well done. A small snicker escaped him. “Thank you.” He merely replied.

By then another Police Car rolled up to take the criminal into custody. Sigurd was all too happy to oblige them.

Remy offered a fist bump now that the professional part of all this was over. And Sigurd was all too happy to grant his friend this one simple greeting. His fist gently bumping against Remy’s “Yeah this stuff is really easy, if that was enough to prove myself!” Sigurd boastfully joked. “But yeah, I am really glad to see you Remy.” It had been far too long.

“Drink’s sounds good.” Sigurd agreed. A memory of times long ago flashed through him, though it wasn’t an unpleasant memory. Could it really be the same memory? Who knows.

Anyhow, Remy offered him his number. Sigurd was quick to fetch his own phone and add it to his contacts before Remy would ever so dutifully return to the police station for his report…

But Sigurd had to do that too, no? And so he began to walk in the same direction, totally not following Remy…

Sigurd followed the Mightyena as it bolted through crowds. Perhaps he followed it a bit too closely as he accidentally caused the fall of several bystanders.

But it was worth it as they reached an abandoned building. While Remy prepared for surveillance, Sigurd took a moment to catch his breath.

By the time Remy was done Sigurd was ready. Sigurd gave a nod and walked to the entrance as he considered the right approach.

Give a warning first, let them surrender, then burst in. He reminded himself.

“SLATEPORT PD. COME OUT WITH YOUR HANDS ABOVE YOUR HEAD!” Sigurd yelled loud enough for the culprit inside to hear.

After a minute or two of waiting it became clear to Sigurd that the person wasn’t about to hand themselves over. With a Pokéball in hand, Sigurd kicked the door in. Slamming it against the wall he immediately began to look around.

Nothing.

Sigurd wasn’t convinced. He summoned the Pokémon. A terrifying Houndoom appeared. “Roar,” Sigurd commanded. And the Houndoom obliged letting out a terrifying roar into the limited space.

Nearby rustling alerted Sigurd to the culprits hiding place. He quickly jumped upon the guy, locking him against the ground before cuffing him. Surprisingly anti-climatically. Though as the cuffs were clasped on, Sigurd remembered that he was supposed to tell this person about his rights. “You have the right to remain silent. Anything you say can be used against you in court,”

And the culprit made full use of this right as Sigurd would drag the person onto his feet and move him out of the building. With a cocky smile, Sigurd emerged from the building along with the culprit. “Well, that was easy enough.”

It seemed the sight of Houndoom had caused distress in the little yellow receptionist. Sigurd got the message loud and clear as he saw the pen pointing at the canine-looking drawing with a big fat x on top.

That can’t be right! He thought in distress.

The Houndoom whimpered some more at the sudden movements of the one carrying it. “No, I am not leaving before a doctor fixes this. You can’t send us away. We have a right to medical assistance. You can’t discriminate like that!” He spoke loudly enough for anyone in adjacent rooms to hear. His voice filled with a mixture of disbelief, anger, frustration, and a hint of fear.

A small shock sent toward a door-knob caught his attention, especially as a voice called out from behind the door. “Yeah, your little friend out here is trying to deny my partner Pokémon urgent medical attention!”

Sigurd almost kicked down the door to the Medical Practice. He quickly made his way to the receptionist’s desk. Worry painted plainly on his face as he heaved for air. He was by no means quiet in his approach caring not for any that might have been sitting in the accompanying waiting room.

Blood stained his Officer’s uniform, hands covered in blood. A wounded officer might not on his own be peculiar, but he was not the victim this time. A whimpering hellish hound had been thrown over his shoulder. Its leg were poorly bandaged.

He hadn’t even the time to take in the look of the receptionist before his mouth began to speak. “Hi, is there a doctor available right now? I got an urgent one here.” A head nod gesture towards the whimpering Houndoom was all he sent.

But then he was stopped in his tracks as he actually saw the receptionist, and one thought crossed his mind.

Wait, that can't be right?

Sigurd calmed the elderly’s nerves. A firm hand on her shoulder as the Mightyena sniffed. It didn’t take long for the canine to fetch the scent.

For a moment he listened to Remy then turned to the woman and said. “We will be chasing this person down. If you head down to the station and file a report, we will be with you asap, okay?” A bit too casual, but he didn’t have much time.

Anyhow the moment Mightyena began the hunt, Sigurd was in hot pursuit. Running right behind the canine as quickly as he could.

Luckily Arceus had blessed him with the physique to run and the training to make use of it.
