They were nearly home free now, the entrance of the Safari Zone clearly in sight. Fresh snow was starting to fall, further incentivizing his expedient retreat from the nature preserve, but before Victor crossed the threshold, he decided to take one more sweep of the area. After all, he had come a sizable distance to get here, and had spent money for the admission, so why not get his money's worth? [break][break]

The clearing he was standing in was largely vacant, outside of himself and Jaakko. A copse of conifers stretched out into the northwest, and there was a large pond to the south, not dissimilar to the one he had caught the Staryu in. To his admittedly untrained eye, there wasn't much to see; perhaps most of the Pokemon had begun to retreat to their own homes in light of the new snowfall. But then Victor saw a shape moving in the pond, distant and hazy at first. He squinted hard, trying to discern what it was through the falling snow. [break][break]

Finally, the Pokemon came into view, and Victor immediately recognized the blue pleisosaur Pokemon. Lapras was a rare but beloved species back home, a mascot for probably a million different sailing and travel companies, and a species known for it's gentle disposition. He half-considered catching it. A selfish part of him was tempted by sheer virtue of it being relatively rare, and another, more utilitarian side of him reasoned that the creature would be excellent for travel over the water. But then he saw something that immediately dashed his ideas for capture. [break][break]

There was another, much smaller Pokemon trailing behind the Lapras. It was another of the same species, struggling to keep up with it's much larger kin. The larger Lapras stopped, waiting for it's apparent child, craning it's neck down to nuzzle the smaller one affectionately as child leaned against it's parent. Something in Victor's chest ached at the sight of it. [break][break]

The larger of the two suddenly looked up, locking eyes with Victor in a stare that was neither threatening nor friendly. It was an assessment of his intentions, trying to determine whether he was friend or foe. Well, there was no good reason to break apart a family, Victor reasoned, so he gave a wide and cordial wave to the pair of them. The smaller of the two tilted it's head quizzically at the gesture, but the larger simply turned it's back to him and began to swim away. Victor watched for some time as the two disappeared across the pond, the increasingly heavy snow obscuring his vision as they sailed off into a world of white. [break][break]

Victor turned and nodded to Jaakko. Stepping out of the Safari Zone proper, he decided it was finally time for the two of them to get home, too.

As if to answer his question, Victor noticed the Gym Leader taking the lead, guiding the Kilowattrel in a circular loop as he decided a place to land. Victor guided Pazuzu to circle around above them in a similar formation, trying to keep his eyes trained on Josh so that he could examine his movements closely. He watched as the Gym Leader guided the bird onto a stretch of green, gliding low until the bird suddenly jerked it's body up and flapped it's wings to abruptly halt it's descent. Victor saw Josh wave him on to do the same. He nodded, more to himself than his friend, and began to guide Pazuzu to do the same. [break][break]

As the Pokemon and it's rider grew close to the ground, close enough that Pazuzu's talons looked like they might scrape the dirt beneath them, Victor jerked upwards hard on the reins, hoping he was correctly imitating what Josh had done. Pazuzu's wings fanned out behind them, massive wing beats acting almost like a parachute to slow them. The great bird's talons reached out in front of them like a pair of grasping hands, and Victor nearly felt the wind knock out of him when the Pidgeot's feet finally found purchase on the grass beneath them. It took a couple more steps and wing beats from the massive bird to slow them completely down, but after a few moments, Victor realized that they had safely made it back to earth. [break][break]

The flight may have been over, but the overwhelming adrenaline coursing through Victor's body was absolutely intoxicating. He felt like he could run a mile, suplex a Tauros, and arm wrestle an Ursaring all at once. With an almost manic smile on his face, he pumped his fists into the air, letting out a delighted “Woo!!”, having apparently forgotten about Josh in that moment or the fact that he was still rather securely strapped to Pazuzu. Nothing else really mattered right now, as far was Victor was concerned. He couldn't remember the last time he had felt so alive.

Victor woke with a gasp and fit of coughing. [break][break]

He rolled over to his side as water was forced out of his lungs, expelled onto the cold linoleum next to him. Wait... linoleum? [break][break]

Victor's eyes shot open when he realized where he was; he was sprawled on the floor of his bathroom, cold water from the shower above saturating his clothes. He scrambled to a sitting position, his back pressed against the tiled wall. Was he back? Was the nightmare finally over? [break][break]

Right on cue, his Espeon came bounding in from the open doorway, eyes wide with concern. Solomon mewed pitifully, pawing at Victor's chest, [break][break]

“Hey buddy,” Victor soothed the Pokemon, trying to steady his trembling voice, “I'm home.” [break][break]

He sat there for a while, under the cold water of the shower, in the familiar grimy bathroom of his temporary home in Mauville, his favorite Pokemon at his side. It was such a relief to be back, but there was a bitter pang when he thought of Naomi, doomed to her fate. When he considered it, though, Victor could at least admit it was a kinder fate that the one he had dragged her into. [break][break]

After what felt like an eternity, Victor rose to his feet, turned off the shower, and began to rid himself of his wet clothes. That's when he noticed a peculiar lump in his trouser pocket; digging inside, he pulled out a Poke Ball of unfamiliar construction. It was made of... wood? And fitted with a peculiar metal latch. Upon scrutinizing it's surface, Victor's heart swelled as he made out a familiar phrase carved into the wood that made up the top portion of the capsule. [break][break]

Stepping out of the bathroom and into the bedroom, he shoved the peculiar ball into his messenger bag before changing into a new set of clothes. As he grabbed his pack of cigarettes and lighter from the kitchenette, he strode out the front door to have a well-earned smoke. He thought of the events of the night and of Naomi. As he took a particularly long drag, watching the sun starting to creep over the eastward horizon, he was mostly content that the nightmare was over. Golden light began to spill across the buildings surrounding him, and he then thought of the peculiar Poke Ball that would serve as a souvenir of this hellish experience, of the engraving on it's surface. [break][break]

He had at least one more thing to remember Naomi by. And maybe, finally, that would be enough.

Victor woke up once more to another painful fit of coughing and retching and good old misery. He almost couldn't bear to open his eyes and force himself to his feet. When he did finally get up, he came to regret that decision almost immediately. [break][break]

He was back where he had landed the very first time he'd come to this little pocket dimension of hell; standing before what was supposed to be a tree, just north of that all too familiar bend in the road, across the road from the break in the trees that lead to the cabin. Except now, the world was swaddled in the fabric of night, dark except for the twinkling stars that dotted the infinity of the clear sky above. If the morning that all of this started at was cold, then the night that followed was abysmally so. Victor rubbed his hands together and breathed into them, feeling the black chill of the winter night shake him to the bone. He looked up, and as his eyes adjusted to the darkness, he discovered another new and more horrific change.[break][break]

TW: Gore, body horror[break]
Something about the boughs of the tree didn't look quite right at first. It was hard to place exactly what it was at first in the darkness of the night, until Victor peered closer at the branches. It was then that he realized that he wasn't looking at a branch, exactly, but an arm hanging limply, clothed in the same white fabric of his button-up shirt. His eyes widened in horror as his gaze swept over the rest of the tree's structure. [break][break]

Where there should have been branches, there were limbs, arms and legs clad in the same clothes and shoes that Victor was currently wearing. In some places, long, greasy tresses of brown hair hung like the boughs of a weeping willow. In others, pairs of glasses hung like macabre ornaments, their shattered forms draped across broken wrists and ankles or clutched by the tips of unmoving fingers. In others still, there instead hung thin delicate chains that each bore a single, plain metal band. Victor palmed his chest where he felt his own version of the jewelry through the fabric of his shirt; it was his wedding band, always kept close to his heart.
[break][break]

It was sort of amazing that Victor didn't scream at the sheer horror of what he was seeing. He instead took a couple of shaky steps back, turned on his heel, and sprinted towards the familiar cabin. Victor no longer cared whether he restarted the damn loop or not, only concerned with putting as much distance between him and that nightmarish sight as possible. As he broke through the trees, he immediately noticed another change that stopped him in his tracks. [break][break]

While the cabin was still there, situated in the small clearing alongside the picnic bench, there was a new formation that was most certainly not there before. There was a god damn shoreline. [break][break]

Looking out, the grassy clearing extended just a few yards out from the cabin until it met the edges of a tranquil lake. A small pier extended a few feet out over the water, starlight dancing off of it's surface. But this wasn't right; there was supposed to be more woods, and a rocky hiking path; there wasn't supposed to be a fucking lake here, of all things. Victor stood dumbstruck as he took all of it in. It was then he felt a gentle hand on his shoulder, and he screamed, [break][break]

“Easy Vic! It's just me,” greeted a soft and familiar voice. Victor whirled around to be met once more by his late wife. Naomi smiled softly at him and took one of his hands into her own, “Walk with me.” [break][break]

Too confused and tired to argue, Victor allowed Naomi to lead him by the hand across the clearing, past the shoreline, and down the pier. She plopped down to sit, dangling her feet over the edge, and patted the space next to her as an invitation for Victor to do the same. Nodding numbly in acknowledgment, he readily complied, and landed with an unceremonious thump onto the damp wood. He heaved a weary sigh, and without thinking, Victor laid his head on Naomi's shoulder, staring out onto the lake. She laced her fingers with his in return. It was such a warm, familiar bit of comfort. He wished they could stay like this forever,[break][break]

“Vic – the other Vic – is sleeping in the cabin,” Naomi offered nonchalantly. Her thumb rubbed gentle circles over the side of his own, “You've been through a lot, huh?” [break][break]

“You know about the loops?” Victor responded, surprised but probably not as much as he should have been. Weirder things had happened over the course of this mess. Naomi nodded in response, [break][break]

“It's strange; I have all of these memories overlapping each other. Of you, of us, and of this place. And of terrible things happening to you, over and over.” [break][break]

“I'm sorry I did this to you,” Victor sighed, defeated, “God, I'm so fucking sorry.”[break][break]

Naomi gave his hand a gentle squeeze. Victor thought his heart was going to burst; he'd go through a million more loops just to be with her again. As if sensing his thoughts, she squeezed his hand a little tighter, [break][break]

“I know I'm gonna die tonight, Vic. And I know there's nothing that can stop it.” [break][break]

Victor lifted his head and turned to face his wife abruptly. How could she say that? How could she accept her own demise so willingly? What about him? He needed her; he didn't want to leave without Naomi by his side. But rather than barrage her with every anxious thought currently rattling around in his head, Victor simply asked, [break][break]

“How can you be so sure?” [break][break]

Naomi still stared out towards the water, refusing to face him. For all of the calm comfort she had been trying to project, Victor could see the slight furrow of her brow, telltale lines of worry creasing the corners of her eyes. She shook her head firmly, [break][break]

“Because you've done this... how many times now? And there are only a small handful of constants. Mainly, the fact that I will die, in my sleep, sometime tonight,” Naomi said with firm resolve. She turned to face Victor, her green eyes stunning and intense all at once, “I don't think that's something that's meant to change, Victor. Like, it's woven into the fabric of fate-” [break][break]

Fuck fate! I'm not just going to sit back and watch you die again!” [break][break]

Victor tore his gaze away from his wife and pushed himself up to his feet. Surely there was something he could do; call an ambulance, get a cab to a nearby hospital, something, anything- [break][break]

He hadn't noticed that Naomi had stood up to until he felt her press against his back, wrapping her arms around him in a tight embrace. His resolve deflated almost instantaneously, and he felt a tangible pang of pain in his chest when he realized her shoulders were shuddering with muffled sobs, [break][break]

“I don't want to keep watching you die,” she managed to choke out, trying to keep her voice even, “Please, Victor – I don't want to keep watching you die.” [break][break]

Tides of guilt and remorse washed over Victor as he reached down to gently pry Naomi's arms from around his waist. He turned around and pulled her close to his chest, Naomi's sobs now wracking her smaller frame as she buried her face into Victor's chest. He just held her, an arm around her waist, the other hand rubbing soothing circles into her back. [break][break]

God, he'd been so stupid, and so fucking selfish. For all of his posturing about saving Naomi, Victor was beginning to realize that this whole shitshow had been less about her, and more about him. He was the one that wanted to see her, to be with her, to touch her again. How many times had she watched him die while he had been preoccupied with chasing her? When she finally lifted her head, eyes red and cheeks streaked with tears, Victor kissed her forehead and looked at her from over his glasses, [break][break]

“I'm so sorry, Naomi,” he said, giving her shoulders a squeeze, dark brown eyes locked with green, “I can't imagine what kind of hell this has been for you. I'm sorry I put you through this.”[break][break]

He slid his hands down to meet hers, giving them a squeeze of reassurance as he continued, “But I'm gonna stop, now. I'm gonna make this right, so you can rest easy. I-” [break][break]

Victor felt his throat begin to tighten and tears beginning to form in the corners of his eyes. It was so hard to accept the reality of the situation. He had to leave Naomi to her fate; he had to lose her forever. It felt like giving up, like a pitiful defeat. But when he felt Naomi's warm hands reach up to wipe his tears away, his resolve was solidified. He wouldn't keep putting her through this nightmare, [break][break]

“I love you-” he began. [break][break]

“More than anything.” she finished. It was a recitation of their favorite profession of affection for each other, one they repeated before their marriage and for years following. [break][break]

They held each other a while longer before Naomi finally broke their embrace. She looked to the cabin, and back at Victor, [break][break]

“I have to go.” [break][break]

“I know.” [break][break]

There was a hesitation on both of their parts. Victor was reluctant to let her go; Naomi paused after just a few steps back up the pier. She turned to look back at Victor, her face illuminated by moonlight. His heart ached; Victor rubbed his chest, as if the physical action would soothe the emotional pain. They stared at each other a moment longer before Naomi finally turned once more and retreated back to the cabin. To her grave. [break][break]

Victor watched her go, and stood staring numbly at the cabin long after she had made her way inside, flicking the last light off on her way to bed. He slumped down onto the pier, his legs losing the strength to support him. Victor instead pressed his back against one of the supports that jutted out of the water, one leg dangling over the edge of the pier and the other stretched out before him. He stared at the cabin still, even as his eyelids grew heavy and exhaustion sank into his bones. Sleep was rapidly overtaking him, bewildering as it was given the strange circumstances, but Victor felt the weariness of a thousand lifetimes settling upon him. He was only jolted from his weariness when he realized he was slipping from his seat on the pier, falling, body crashing into the icy water of the lake beneath him. [break][break]

Everything was muffled and echoing as he tumbled through the impossible, Stygian depths of the lake. The water shouldn't be this deep so close to the shore, right? But it was not something he had the faculties to make sense of as darkness began to shroud his vision, lungs burning for oxygen that he couldn't take in. As his body journeyed through the dark, frigid waters, he thought of Naomi, walking towards the cabin, repeating the image in his mind's eye like a mantra as the last vestiges of conscious thought slipped into inky oblivion.

The thumbs up from Josh was a simple gesture, but enough to loosen some of the knots that Victor's insides had tied themselves into. If the expert thought that things were going just fine, then they probably were. [break][break]

With a newfound surge of confidence, Victor once again attempted to guide Pazuzu into a more controlled descent. He gradually loosened tension on the reins, careful and precise with the amount of slack he allotted. Sure enough, the Pidgeot responded accordingly, soaring at a gentle decline back to earth. Victor was happy to let the Pokemon take it's time in it's descent. Now that he had reassurance that he was going to make it back to the ground in one piece, he looked up and around to finally take in his surroundings in earnest. [break][break]

Though the creatures and objects below were still small from this height, they were coming into focus with greater detail the lower they dropped in elevation. Trees, cars, people, Pokemon; from here, Victor almost felt he had dominion over it all. His heart began to race again, though this time not in tremulous fear, but with true exhilaration. The colors of the world below him, the great expanse of sky all around – it was enough to make a man feel invincible when he was literally above it all. His eyes widened as much as he could force them to take it all in now that he was no longer afraid for his life. But it was impossible to drink in every last bit of scenery, so Victor resolved to commit what he could to memory as they grew close to touching down. But as they did so, a somewhat concerning question popped into his mind – [break][break]

How was he supposed to land this bird?

As Victor walked along, Jaakko trailing dutifully behind him, he passed a perfectly round hill of snow. Victor stopped a moment to inspect it, caught off-guard by it's peculiar, spherical shape. It was then that the little hill opened it's eyes and shook itself, revealing a little Cetoddle that had been apparently blanketed by the last snow fall. It was certainly cute, but Victor was sure he was going to freeze into a block of Never-Melt Ice if he didn't get indoors soon, so he ignored the little whale-like Pokemon and continued his trek towards the exit of the Safari Zone.

Well, Josh certainly wasn't kidding when he mentioned the takeoff was one of the hardest parts. The rapid ascent into the sky was equal parts exhilarating and terrifying as Victor clung to Pazuzu. He held the reins in a white-knuckled death grip even after their altitude leveled out, and gripped impossibly tighter when he looked down at the people and Pokemon in miniature below. Victor's stomach sank when he realized just how high up they were, and the brief moment of bravado from just before they had taken off had completely evaporated. He was almost certain that he was going to have a heart attack. [break][break]

But there was a single thought that pulled him back from the brink of hysterics; he still had to control this damn bird if he was going to make his way back to the sweet comfort of terra firma. Control was something that Victor did indeed have, and that brief sliver of agency in an otherwise terrifying situation was enough for him to focus and actually start using Pazuzu's reins instead of clinging to them like a security blanket. [break][break]

Navigating in the air was a bit of a touch and go endeavor. Victor kept the Pidgeot coasting, staunchly refusing to apply much pressure on the bird's sides out of a fear that his heart might actually give out if the Pokemon took off at faster speeds. Turning was proving to be responsive and easy, similar to his riding of Josh's other Pokemon, but descending was another story altogether. At first he gave a lot of slack to the reins at once, causing the Pidgeot to descend far too quickly for Victor's comfort and causing the rider to loose a rather unbecoming scream of fear (he really hoped Josh couldn't hear that over the rushing winds around them). Then when he yanked up on the reins to ease the severity of the bird's dive, he over-corrected and sent Pazuzu soaring back upwards at a sharp angle, which again, elicited another frightened yelp from Victor. He at last managed to keep the bird level and guided the Pokemon to a gentle turn, careful not to get too far from the race track. Victor looked back over his shoulder at Josh in a rather pitiful but unspoken bid for a bit of reassurance.

“Yeah, it's a great place to people-watch.” [break][break]

It hadn't occurred to Victor in the immediate moment how that observation might have sounded until the exact moment the phrase was said. People-watching; it was something he actually liked doing, seeing little snippets of people's everyday lives, blissfully banal. But on the other hand, he quickly realized that he probably sounded downright creepy if the younger man didn't share his perspective. Victor decided it was time to pivot the conversation before he could say something else stupid. Quick, what was another safe topic for small talk? [break][break]

“What do you do for work?” Victor asked, “If, uh, you don't mind me asking.”

He hadn't expected to catch Josh off guard; was that a first in the brief amount of time he'd known the Gym Leader? Something about that stuck out to Victor, but he quickly dismissed the thought and instead considered his more pressing decision. Based on the information Josh provided, it appeared that there really was no getting around the speed issue. That just meant that Victor had to put on his big boy britches and step up to the challenge, [break][break]

“I'll take Pazuzu, then. I'm about as inexperienced as it gets,” he replied with resolve. [break][break]

He watched Josh climb onto Etali's saddle and secure himself in with the zippers. It turned out to be a relatively easy process to replicate, and Victor was pleased to find that it felt as secure as it looked. He was now thoroughly assured that he wouldn't be flung off the Pidgeot once they took to the air, but the thought of speeding through the skies still made his heart race with anxious trepidation. [break][break]

It certainly didn't help when he heard the roar of the engine-like Garchomp soar through the air above him. If he wasn't strapped so securely to Pazuzu, Victor was sure he would have practically leapt off of the bird at the sound of the dragon taking off like a jet engine. Josh's nonchalance when addressing this was absolutely mind-boggling, but hell, at this point, Victor assumed that riding a Garchomp at Mach whatever-the-fuck would be like a leisurely Sunday stroll for Josh. [break][break]

He was able to refocus himself just in time to catch Josh's instructions on piloting the Pidgeot. Pull back to climb, lower tension to fall, and he assumed the left and right and fast and slow would be the same as riding a terrestrial Pokemon. Victor made sure his grip was secure on Pazuzu's reins as he nodded in confirmation, [break][break]

“Simple enough; let's ride.”

Jaakko hadn't made it far by the time Victor caught up to him, nearing a snowbank on the other side of the clearing they were in. Victor pulled his thin coat a little tighter around him as a gust of cold air blew through the trees and enveloped them both. He could feel his teeth start to chatter even as the winds subsided, but the Stantler didn't seem to pay the cold much mind, perhaps insulated enough by his plush fur. Victor was beginning to think it was time to start heading back to the entrance of the Safari Zone, [break][break]

“C'mon Jaakko, I think it's time to get moving,” he said as he started to trudge towards the exit of the clearing, “Ope, 'scuse me.” [break][break]

Victor side-stepped a little Darumaka that was trundling through the snow, narrowly avoiding accidentally booting the Pokemon across the clearing. The wild Pokemon started at being addressed, and broke into a run towards the snowbank, it's little arms outstretched behind it. The last Victor saw of it was the bottoms of it's little blue feet as it dove into the snow pile, shimmying it's way inside the mound of snow and frost in an attempt to hide. Jaakko, watching the entire spectacle, shook his head from side to side before finally picking up the pace to catch up to his trainer.

After dismounting Din (and acknowledging her affectionate nose bump), Victor recalled Jaakko to his Pokeball so he could get some rest. He watched as Josh seemed to consider something before whistling into the skies to summon the winged companions for the next leg of the lesson. Victor gave a nod of acknowledgment as he was introduced to the two, and smiled as Josh recalled his relationship with the Pidgeot in particular. A Trainer's first catch was always a nostalgic one, [break][break]

“Nah, I'd rather try my hand at it now while I've still got the chance,” Victor insisted. [break][break]

It was kind of Josh to be so considerate, but assessing the riding equipment the two birds were loaded with, it looked much safer than he had initially anticipated. The nerves were still there, sure, but Victor was no longer convinced that he was going to immediately slip off one of the birds and plummet to his death, [break][break]

“Should I take Etali, or Pazuzu?”

As they descended the downhill slope that marked the end of the course, Victor realized it was probably a good time to stop, despite the growing realization that he really didn't want to. He straightened himself upright and slowed Din carefully down, and the Sawsbuck, for her part, was very receptive to his commands. She gradually slowed her gait from her bounding gallop down to a slow walk, and then stopped altogether. Victor reached down and gave her an affectionate pat on the side of her shoulder in thanks. [break][break]

If his face wasn't already flushed from the excitement of riding at such speeds around the track, then the Gym Leader's praise would have had Victor blushing with sheepish pride. He didn't consider himself particularly talented in any sort of field; the fact that he'd found something he might have a natural knack for was a whole other sort of exciting. But he nodded in acknowledgment of Josh's assessment of Jaakko. Talent or no, he was going to have to work with the Stantler to establish a better rapport with the Pokemon. As if summoned by his thoughts, Jaakko finally caught up to the both riders and their Pokemon, huffing with exhaustion. Victor felt a pang of guilt as he watched the deer Pokemon sidle over to him. The poor guy definitely wasn't used to these kinds of speeds. [break][break]

But then Victor's attention turned to the prospect of flying. For all of his delight in speeding down the track on Din, the prospect of literally soaring through the air was daunting, to say the least. What if he fell off and was sent plummeting to the ground to meet a terrible and painful death? Or what if Victor got super airsick? On the other hand, Josh seemed to think he could handle it – Victor was almost more afraid of disappointing the Gym Leader than he was of meeting a grisly end, [break][break]

“I, uh...” Victor started nervously. He swallowed hard, “You know what? Yeah, I'll give it a shot. Just, uh, don't put me on anything too fast.” [break][break]

Oh boy, just what was he getting himself into?
