[attr="class","devonpost"]it's necessary, sure, but alexander sees the subtle stir of emotions in her expression. pyu-pyu's reaction to the attack had done more than intended and he finds himself curious to illeana's disposition. will she be able to hold on?

the toxapex will find it much more difficult to physically hit a moving target that's as small as a cushion. when the POISON JAB comes flying at them, all tentacruel does is tilt her entire body back so the tentacle hits her head instead of pyu-pyu. her natural resistance to the attack allows her to simply shrug it off.

the LEAF STORM finds connection as grotle summons forth a flurry of razor-sharp leaves. they cut at the blue skin of the water-type, damaging, but she holds on, knowing the battle's about to tilt in their favor.

the grotle's hurt and badly poisoned; no amount of healing will save it. there's no use prolonging its demise either. with a HELPING HAND from pyu-pyu, tentacruel lashes out with a third tentacle for a boosted POISON JAB.

[attr="class","devonpost"]AERIAL ACE will always land--there is no avoiding it. so alexander reads the battle and quickly decides his next plan of action, hoping that it'd be enough to turn the tide.

"DRAGON PULSE." 

he times his order to when the aegislash bursts through the SURF. the time it needs to travel to lapras allows the water-type to summon a DRAGON PULSE that flies right at the aegislash. he ends up taking the AERIAL ACE regardless, but this would perhaps guarantee a hit of their own as well.

[attr="class","devonpost"]tentacruel takes the hit of the GIGA DRAIN and allows the grotle to heal what little amount of health it does. she continues circling their opponent even as the water-type on her head gets focused down.

purple ooze spills all over pyu-pyu and the damage is excruciating. she lets out a cry that escapes through bubbles and she slides further down tentacruel's head to submerge herself more into the water, hoping to soothe the pain. she hides the attempt to RECOVER as she starts inhaling water through her skin.

tentacruel continues her assault on the grotle. the same two tentacles hover close by before one strikes with a POISON JAB.

[attr="class","devonpost"]the garchomp faints and the clawitzer soon follows. the water-type is unable to hold on after being hit with the final SHADOW SNEAK. his unconscious body simply floats to the surface before being recalled.

the situation grows bleak because alexander knows his lapras will only be able to take two attacks at most. the aegislash is strong, powerful, and though conditioned, there is only so much punishment lapras can take. and they both know the aegislash has only taken one attack so far. it seems like a lost battle.

"avoid it." 

lapras rocks back and forth and summons a large SURF of a wave. it flows towards the aegislash, looking to sink it into the murky depths of the water. speaking of--that is where lapras goes as well as he dives back down into the water, disappearing from sight.

[attr="class","devonpost"]the brionne is already off running even before her MOONBLAST connected. their opponent's strategy has become abundantly clear when all of their attacks are focused on one pokemon. brionne understands as much as well, and perhaps that's what allows her to close the distance in the time she does.

the ZAP CANNON will find its mark. electricity surges through primarina's body and she struggles to find her bearings. however reduced the damage may be because of CAPTIVATE, the natural typing of it is still overpowering.

the IRON HEAD will also find its mark, just not on the intended target. brionne intercepts the attack with her small frame and that small distraction allows primarina to avoid the attack entirely. the impact knocks brionne to the ground, and as she stumbles back to her feet, both of them focus their attention on the dracovish.

two MOONBLASTS rain down on the dragon-type.

[attr="class","devonpost"]illeana reyes deserves to be here--everything she's worked for, everything she's accomplished, they all lead to this moment. perhaps he'll help her realize it.

as soon as she gives the first order, his pokemon begin their approach. tentacruel sifts through the water, sinking deeper to avoid the resistance from the air. the TOXIC will find its mark as it seeps into pyu-pyu's skin, badly poisoning her. the same, however, will afflict the grotle, as an ooze of TOXIC leaks out of the ground beneath its feet.

the sharp RAZOR LEAVES cut through the air and even water, damaging both of them. the water does what it can to lessen the impact but the sharpness still finds its way through. they both grimace in pain, but tentacruel never slows down.

both her choices are immobile and so they'll take advantage of that. tentacruel starts circling the small patch of land the grotle stands on. two of her tentacles will emerge from the water but only one will whip forward for a POISON JAB.

[attr="class","devonpost"]the first FAKE OUT will find its mark as it connects cleanly against carracosta, causing him to FLINCH. the fossil-pokemon stumbles backwards, but the damage is minimal and he prepares himself for the next attack.

the second FAKE OUT never comes because tentacruel never surfaces. the water-type plays to her strengths and knows that there's no reason for her to fight a battle on land. the terrain is built to her advantage and she'll capitalize on it. a HYDRO PUMP emerges from the water, looking to strike the alolan meowth.

alexander watches carefully; eyes never drifting to the blinking red of the cameras around them.

"pokemon are naturally compelled to obey their trainers. they are loyal, obedient--it is a dynamic that is ever-present and will unlikely change. but what happens if we give them added incentive? what happens if they fight out of more than just fear of failure?"

combee buzz away from the hive, leaving mister butch free access to do his thing. it doesn't take him long until he moves on to the next hive, which is luckily right next to the last one. rapidash moves forward and does the same thing: nothing.

"no longer together, unfortunately." is that the answer laurence wants to hear? alexander waits for a follow-up question.

[attr="class","devonpost"]the KING'S SHIELD is annoying but it does little to deter them from the objective of the battle. they waste little time dwelling on it and both pokemon turn their attention to the garchomp.

the blue energy that emits from the garchomp is more than familiar--it's telling. clawitzer has been on the receiving end of DRAGON RAGES and no matter who uses it, the damage stays relatively the same. it is a phenomenon alexander cannot explain but it is one he'll take advantage of. clawitzer takes the hit in full and despite the fixed damage, he comes dangerously close to fainting.

with the aegislash playing defense, it leaves the garchomp vulnerable. a DRAGON PULSE fires from clawitzer at close range and the space created is enough for lapras to aim a precise ICE BEAM at the dragon-type.

[attr="class","devonpost"]the name, however confusing it may be, works in their favor because BARRIER is not actually a barrier. the shiny sheen that had wrapped itself around tentacruel's body holds despite the BRICK BREAK that strikes it. the damage tentacruel takes is ultimately reduced because of it and allows her to stand her ground. or float in place.

brionne also makes no effort to dodge the BULLET PUNCH becauseof her natural resistance to the move. it connects cleanly and knocks the wind out of her, but she remains standing. brionne slides back and claps her flippers together, calling for an ENCORE from the metagross.

tentacruel takes advantage of the situation and pushes back with her tentacles. she creates distance and at the same time she summons a torrent of HYDRO PUMP at the lucario, looking to create space as she falls back into the water.

[attr="class","devonpost"]the dojo student moves to the side, marking their success at the challenge, but no celebrations come from it. not even a smile. the mood is sour and drenched by tension and no matter how much he dislikes it, he accepts the situation for what it is and moves on.

"thank you, mister pancham." alexander holds his hand out and the two of them bump fists; mister pancham's trainer is unfortunately a millennial. the fighting-type is then recalled and deposited back into the rotomi.

the sound of footsteps bounce off the walls and the party soon find themselves in a much more serene scene. the aroma of flowers is lovely and he appreciates the brief change in setting. hand to his belt finds his solution for the challenge.

alexander points to the half-buried ferroseed. "over there, chill. do you see it?" the cinccino perks her head the direction and nods. "BULLET SEED it, please." and with that, the cinccino gathers various seeds in her mouth and spits them at the steel-type, ensuring all five hit due to her SKILL LINK. alexander is not sure where she got the seeds from; maybe hibernation prep?

[attr="class","devonpost"]they can't avoid the DRACO METEORS that fall. lapras and clawitzer scatter in the water, doing their best to weave back and forth to avoid getting hit by the full mass of one. this creates enough separation for a SHADOW SNEAK to strike clawitzer, damaging. 

lapras breaks from the water, gasping for air, as he struggles to deal with the pain of the DRACO METEOR. but he notices the garchomp now on land after having dived into the water and sees the droplets of water that drench its ROUGH SKIN. lapras knows what to do.

a sudden cold frosts over them as a BLIZZARD is summoned. even the aegislash in the water is not immune to its effects as the sudden drop in temperature looks to overwhelm.

clawitzer uses the close proximity to fire off a boosted DARK PULSE, hoping knock the aegislash away.

[attr="class","devonpost"]alexander sees the subtleties in her expression and what lies beneath the nuances of her facade. where his presence might usually be comforting he knows it does anything but in the moment. the distance she creates is expected and no matter how painful the space between them is, he allows it.

perhaps navel tower is cursed after all.

surprisingly, alexander does not have the next pokemon prepared and ready to go on his person. there's only so much prepration one can do before being caught off guard by the specifics of a challenge. he browses through the rotomi for a while before landing on the solution to this challenge.

the pancham called out isn't his but it'll do. "hi, mister pancham. i need your help with that kabutops." he points to the fossil-pokemon and then up into the air. "can you plase STORM THROW it up?" and with that the pancham springs into action. its MOLD BREAKER enables it to break through the tough BATTLE ARMOR.
