As Sage enters the building, Cillian retires to a nearby taxi stop to sit on its bench. He lights up a cigarette, indulging in the poison that floods his lungs upon a deep inhale.[break][break]

Indeed, the business was not well-guarded. In fact, it wasn't guarded at all. Only the employees, of which there were two, posed any threat of discovery or suspicion. One toiled behind the counter as the other pottered about, cleaning various surfaces and adjusting merchandise.[break][break]

The occasional customer posed a different sort of threat; should Sage be seen acting suspicious, alarms might be raised.

Cillian was no small man. Six foot three and all corded muscle, he is nevertheless dwarfed by the giant who steps onto the terrace. Without fear, his amber gaze settles on the man that could only be Alphonse Gambino, lingering there as he draws close.[break][break]

He takes the offered hand without hesitation, shakes firm and brief.[break][break]

"Aye," he affirms, the depth of his own voice carrying a smoker's gravel. An ashtray sat beside him, the cigarette within slowly turning to ash — forgotten in favour of whatever had been on the screen of his phone. He'd pocketed that phone when Alphonse arrived, affording the stranger his full attention.[break][break]

Leaning back in his chair, more for comfort than any desire to extricate himself from Al's presence, the underboss pinches the cigarette between scarred fingers and takes a drag. A slow exhale sees grey smoke mix with the dark miasma that curls around him, serpentine. Alive. It shifts with him as he rests an elbow against the table.[break][break]

Though unsmiling, there is no hostility in Cillian's countenance.[break][break]

"I understand an agreement has been reached."[break][break]

He remembers, distant, what had been taught to him. You will learn to bend, or we will break you. And what they'd broken, they had rebuilt.

As the vessel explodes, Lugia plunges underwater.[break][break]

In the moments before, Cillian knows an intensity of heat only matched by the bowels of Mt. Chimney, the likes of which he'd explored with Shalin Nariya months ago. There is shock, at first, then a stab of fear as he's dragged under the water, before his mind can catch up to what's occurred. In contrast to his own racing heart, Lugia is eerily calm.[break][break]

Blood threads in thin tendrils through the surf, attracting Sharpedo who flee upon the sight of the wounded leviathan. She RECOVERS quickly, pivoting underwater to ferry them a distance away before surfacing.[break][break]

Uninjured by comparison thanks to his patron shielding him, Cillian observes the smoking wreckage of the smuggler's ship. The fate of its passengers mattered little, now. Either they'd have died in the blast, drowned in its aftermath, or were somewhere far away from here for Arceus-knows what purpose. What mattered was finding the culprit.[break][break]

A WHIRLPOOL forms around the splintered wreckage, consigning it to the depths. [break][break]

"They've got to be nearby," Cillian hisses, sending an AERODACTYL skyward. The DARK PREDATOR was a skilled hunter. "Find me a target, Sluagh."[break][break]

The prehistoric Pokémon leads with fierce AGILITY toward an island battered by wave and rain, and Lugia follows below, her bone-white spines slicing through the surf.

Bay Leaf Brews was a small but well-trafficked local café in Sootopolis, with an outdoor seating area that overlooked the city's broad bay. Its mascot, a chipper-looking Bayleef, rested beneath a blue-and-white awning and drew customers in with its AROMATHERAPY.[break][break]

Cillian disliked Bayleef, as well as this one's signature move, but the smell of coffee was far preferrable to flowers mixed with burning flesh.[break][break]

Familiar with the Rocket underboss, the owner is quick to attend him upon his entry. With an instruction to prohibit any customers not of Rocket affiliation, a single photo is shown as the exception.[break][break]

"Point him to me, when he arrives."[break][break]

No questions were asked, and a steaming pot of peppermint tea was quickly provided. Cillian sips idly at the steaming liquid as he waits, expecting his intended contact wouldn't be long. He was described as a gentlemen, and a good gentleman was rarely late.[break][break]

To a man who'd done his research in kind, Cillian's infamy made him an easy spot even without the direction provided by the establishment's owner. Tailored suit, blond hair, a scar along his cheek... and a SHADOW MIASMA that curls around him like a morning fog.

While not at work, Cillian was always at Rocket's beck and call. Such was the life of an underboss. Of a dog, beholden to a master who'd tightened his leash after the betrayal of his siblings. Don't disappoint me.[break][break]

I won't he'd vowed. He wouldn't.[break][break]

So, in spite of the comfort of his bed (in which he'd got little sleep, as usual) and the warmth of his husband's arms, Cillian extricates himself the moment his 'work' phone rings. In the span of minutes, he's out the door.[break][break]

Lugia erupts from the depths of Sootopolis Bay in a shower of sunlit drops, violet wings fanning out to cast long shadows over the underbosses beachside home. Wasting no time, a PHANTOM FORCE from his Dhelmise delivers him to her back.[break][break]

Thunder rumbles to herald their approach, but the boat seems strangely lifeless in the water. Though as smugglers they made a living on being inconspicuous, their lack of appearance after summoning an underboss to their aid was suspicious, to say the least.[break][break]

Waves slam against the hull as Lugia's wingbeats stir the ocean's surface, the Guardian settling upon the water like some dark swan, wings folding at her sides.[break][break]

"Announce yourselves," Cillian commands, suspicion sharp in his tone. If they were in distress, perhaps whatever trouble they'd encountered had already befell them. Were there League officers hiding belowdecks, hoping to capture a prolific Rocket?

Though Gavin's Ninetales was by no means small, it didn't compare to Shalin's Letheia. The icy fox twitches his nine tails and cants his head, clearly intrigued by such an impressive specimen. Gavin's never seen the regal Pokémon so flustered as when Letheia touches her nose to his.[break][break]

His SNOW WARNING, while unable to create a proper snow in such oppressive heat, creates a light mist around their group that somewhat offsets the unbearable temperature. Somewhat.[break][break]

Unable to ride his Pokémon, Gavin elects to walk casually at his side.[break][break]

"Probably," he says of Shalin's assumption. "Maybe the right path would lead that way? So where might the other one lead?"[break][break]

Naturally, his attention shifts to the left.

As his mind and vision clear, Cillian watches the pulsating purple chunk as if it were a particularly interesting chemical reaction. Only when Fern speaks does his attention snap back to the admin.[break][break]

"If it does, we don't get to see that part." Cil sounds almost disappointed. Their surroundings begin to twitch, shifting and changing beneath the meteorite's power. "It'll shift us somewhere else before-"[break][break]

He doesn't get to finish the sentence.

Lamenting its centuries of imprisonment, the Spiritomb lunges forward.[break][break]

"Fuck!"[break][break]

Cillian finds himself wishing he'd brought along his Chandelure, that they might burn the errant souls upon its ghastly flame. Instead, pale fingers curl around the capsule belonging to his DHELMISE. Its SHADOW HOLD could not chain down a fellow spirit, but with a click of Cillian's tongue it vanishes into the planes of a PHANTOM FORCE.[break][break]

Perhaps sensing the impending threat, the Spiritomb cackles.[break][break]

The icy fingers of DESTINY BOND close around Cillian's chest.[break][break]

"Eurydice, back!"[break][break]

Rather than executing its target, the Dhelmise reappears some distance away and then ALLY SWITCHES not with Cillian, but with Nomi.[break][break]

"Nomi, run! It'll kill us if we faint it."[break][break]

It might've been a simulation, but death was no more pleasant to live through.[break][break]

With the aid of his SHADOW MIASMA, Cillian turns on his heel and gives chase through the maze of tombstones.[break][break]

"We should shift soon!" His words echo in the vast network of halls.

"I'm not too familiar with Unova's scene," Cillian admits, shrugging. "But I've heard nothing compares to Galar, and Hoenn and Kanto have proven that so far."[break][break]

Kanto. One had only to think on the name of the doomed region for a moment to realise why a high-profile Rocket might have some knowledge of its scene. He'd lived there. He'd watched Rocket raze it to the ground.[break][break]

Still, he dismisses their gym circuit with the same tone one might afford a discussion of weather.[break][break]

"I was in Galar recently. It's livable, at least."[break][break]

He forces down the pang of sorrow as he remembers what he'd returned home without.[break][break]

"You get it," Cillian says with a grin, as Frank reflects on the potentially deadly nature of the spot. "Nothing in the world like it."[break][break]

For a man who feared death, he chased it regularly.
