he answers with a shrug before looking up.

"somewhere north," he deduces, given the time of day and the position of the sun in the sky. "ain't there any nearby landmark in the map?!"

he stops to look around the area, finding nothing but large crystalline growths and bright green meadows. cliffs and the like were common too, but when every place has one, it was difficult to pinpoint which edge they were at.

"either way, we have time." they did embark earlier than suggested since wolfgang believes in being punctual.

in their idle chat, he finds himself blurting out a question that lingered in his head the moment james offered to take the map. "can you actually read a map?"

"huh?!" the defensive retort comes out. "it's not that! fuck!"

he turns and folds the map before handing it to james. an extra force backs the exchange, coloring the interaction with the same hue that he always shows.

"i just wanted to be thorough with this! ain't that the proper way?"

wolfgang exhales, and then rests his hands on his waists.

"if ya wanna go straight to the extraction point immediately, then be my guest. the paradox pokemon are oh so scary, right?"

he was actually lost. he just doesn't want to admit it in front of james, so he masks it with mockery and taunts that just appears as banter since it came from him.

an injured iron valiant comes into their view, its movements wonky and its wires fried.

"i thought you don't like fighting?" he teases him.

he releases his typhlosion on the field, ready to fend off the drill while they gather data. it stands on all fours, flaring up the flames on its back as its way of preparing for a fight.

"i was so ready to fuckin' roast ya if ya didn't follow. ready to get rid of it?"

their escort party already weakened it, but it doesn't mean it wasn't a threat. if anything, a cornered beast is more dangerous since they're willing to give it their all for survival.

does it apply to paradox pokemon though?

"ya gonna report me for it?" he taunts, and then chuckles. "you won't."

in the midst of their banter, a text message shows up on the screen of the tablet. the status report of their supposed guards show up, which briefly translates to 'watch out'.

a click of the tongue is an appropriate response.

"tch. they're fending off an entire horde, and apparently, an injured one ran away to this direction."

he walks away from the tent without any other word, grabbing a pokeball and leaving james behind.

"huh?!"

he should have expected that kind of weak answer, but he didn't. he's too surprised to even get a proper quip out in time.

wolfgang calms himself down with a sip of his coffee, finishing the cup immediately before letting it down on the table. only then does he explode like he usually does.

"hell no! i'm just a damn labs guy too!" he taps his foot on the ground. "if we get in trouble, you're gettin' yourself in there with me, aight?"

technically, this was his senior. he did join aeos before him. normally, he'd be fired for lashing out on a superior, which is how he doesn't land too many jobs before silph co. came around.

"ya scared they'll leave us alone?" he teases.

he opens an insulated bag that contains the entire party's food. wolfgang procures a thermos from it, pouring himself a cup of coffee after giving james one.

"ya did so well at ultra wilds. you make me wish they failed so you can step up to the plate and deal with the paradox 'mons 'round this place."

he leans on the table's edge rather than sit on a chair, sipping on his drink as he waits for a response.

after making sure that the parameters are safe for the machine to start working, wolfgang presses a button from his terminal to start the drill. he grimaces when a piece of dirt flies on his shirt.

"oi, baker boy," he calls his colleague. "are the guards here yet?"

the two of them were sent first to set up a drill for surveying the ground as scientists of aeos. they were supposed to be escorted by other trainers, but they were told that they were going to clear the nearby areas first.

he leaves a tablet on a nearby table underneath a tent set up by them for james to double check.

the flames on the typhlosion's back start to burn, creating enough dark smoke to cover the entire area. it leaves nothing visible in the eye, and worse was actual smoke that induces coughing.

he was used to it though, given that his time in azalea was filled with neighbors making charcoal and a smelter for apricorn balls.

"you always have the option to visit me at lilycove," he tells her amid the coughs. "isn't it nice that your brother finally moved to a place with actual modern buildings."

the fletchinder may have hit its mark as the typhlosion set things up under a black screen, but it would find the typhlosion hiding with the reduced visibility after it rebounded.

"you don't look like the type to cook," he addresses bluntly, killing the mood for the moment.

he enters a different subject altogether, foregoing the romantic side of their banter in favor of sticking true to his nature.

"you don't need to do much to impress me," he informs him, leaning back to his seat. "take out is fine."

he does know how to cook as well, but it doesn't enter his thought to offer. after all, it's james' job to prove him wrong at the end or the day, or at the very least, impress him.

he's not sure if he's being stringed along or if this guy was just that dense with the words he was using.

wolfgang raises a brow at first, and then a chuckle. he leans back, easing himself, as he throws the same stare back to him once he decided he can take the bait and play along.

"treat me out on a date first," he humors james. "then we can have a happy ending."

in the same manner as being playful, he joins his colleague's games. it has a hint of the same tone that he used on him, but playful enough to be signed off as banter between friends.

he crosses his legs under the table, swinging his foot in the air in the same way james taps the ground with his.

"what's wrong with that?" he challenges back. "be happy your brother's boring, or else you might not have enough time with him."

that's how he was during his stay in johto.

keeping it chill and lowkey was a lifestyle had appreciated once he was out from rocket. being 'normal' was nice despite the peace being disrupted every once in a while on hoenn.

at the very least, the chaos provides a nice smokescreen for his background.

"you could get one of those new typhlosions in the market," he tells abby. "purple flames are your color, right?"

unlike the one he has, the hisui variants were much more useful.

"anyways, let's start with eruption."

a burst of flames akin to an active volcano shoots out from the typhlosion's back. it flies up and starts raining down embers as the pokemon performs the move with ease.

this was the standard during his stay in rocket. he supposed it should be normal on hoenn too if his sister called him boring.

the question catches him off-guard and forces him to be defensive after he had subconsciously answered it.

the last time he tried, he got nothing serious. it wasn't like he actively looked for one, but it doesn't look promising for him regardless of the angle he took during speed dating.

"y'er not gettin' anything good from my history anyways."

despite the unsavory background, there really was nothing spicy from his past. there only was work that had been done, and he spent the last few years trying to oblige.

the expression turns smug, a mischievous smile greeting mila with malicious compliance.

"i'm sorry, lady. was that not a proper response?"

wolfgang stands unmoving, almost as if he's willing to play the game. it wasn't like he has much to do without a date in a skating rink.

"ya want me to apologize for standin'? well, sorry for takin' your time away from your date."

that's what most people are here for: dates. couples were the only ones here, besides maybe families and groups of young students taking their vacation from school.

his frustration with his own situation has been projected.
