no dominic mouths his answer to priam into the darkness. his angular features are briefly lit up by the screen of his phone as he sends a message before pocketing the device. he sincerely doubts he’ll continue receiving reception for much longer as they descend further down into the depths.

dominic’s gaze drops down to his own explorer kit and it occurs to him that he’d barely looked at the contents - he’d only opened it to stash not one but two flasks in. for later. just in case.

"you know i love nothing more than to go on field trips with you guys," dominic drawls as he inclines his head to send gavin a wry, derisive glance. "shame that lucas couldn’t join us this time."

dominic taps his arcanine on the side and gestures toward a portion of the wall as it heaves in a deep breath and exhales a FLAMETHROWER.

"i can read," dominic says coolly, arching an eyebrow as he taps fingertips across the pages. there’s no mockery in his voice when he speaks, only something sharp and cold. "it doesn’t say why you abandoned your primary task - and the rest of us - for the sake of one individual. there wasn’t time to think isn’t good enough."

dominic tilts his chin up, his narrow-eyed gaze turning scrutinising as he takes in the hints of gavin’s exhaustion; he takes it as weakness. in truth, this is almost boring. dominic finds his gaze sliding over to marcel. "to be honest," dominic says slowly. "at this point? i think you're qualified to take over about half the jobs back on the sub."

dominic is not sure if he's joking or not.

glancing up at the darkening sky prompts him to finally check the time on his phone, and he's surprised to see how much of the day had already passed. "speaking of, we should head back."

"yeah, yeah, yeah," dominic says in quick, uninterested dismissal. he read both their accounts, he read those of practically everyone from the newest and most inexperienced grunt all the way up the ladder; there is, it turns out, little to do on the submarine during the nocturnal hours for those that don’t crave sleep.

when taken in summation, the picture illustrated is the same as what he remembers in photographic clarity. dominic understands the whats and hows and whens, but motivation is what eludes him. he fixes an unblinking, steady stare on gavin.

"why the fuck did you go into a wormhole? what were you thinking, exactly?"

although the laboratories aren’t tucked away in the lower levels of the submarine, it feels like they might be; it’s always colder here. regularly, perhaps this zone would be untouched save for the head scientists and those under their employ, but recent events resulted in the two former megalopolan generals being settled into the holding area adjacent to the labs.

dominic watches the older one - a captive courtesy of him and his team from mauville - through the one-way mirror with an impassive, though almost verging on curious, expression. it’s a glorified cell, and it’s honestly better than the man deserves.

he turns slowly when he hears footsteps approaching down the corridor. "eva. you liking your new neighbours?" dominic says after a moment as he inclines his head toward the glass.

pulling the stack of papers toward him, dominic’s gaze rests steadily on his colleagues, the ghost of a half-actualised smirk flitting across his features briefly. "no need to get so testy yet, gav," he drawls, blasé. "i want to talk about mauville."

dominic closes his eyes and pretends that the sockets don’t feel like they’re filled with cotton. he picked the main conference room. he called them both in. he has a penchant for theatrics and, sometimes, it shows.

the table - unmarred, polished mahogany - stretches in front of dominic, empty but for the neat stack of pages and folders, bookmarked and highlighted appropriately. dominic is standing, leaning against declan’s empty chair at the head of the table; truthfully, the boss’ presence is felt even in his absence. even that is intentional.

when the door clicks open, dominic nonchalantly drops his phone on top of the papers and watches, gaze sharp and expression impassive. after a moment, he’ll jerk his head toward the chairs - both an invitation and a demand for the men to sit.
