once again dominic releases his pokemon into a nearby fountain, pointedly ignoring the way that the caretaker glared at both him and the sharpedo as water overflowed from the basin and on to the floor.

whenever poipoles would stray too far from the station with the antidote distribution, the sharpedo would leap from the air and corral them back by lashing at them with its body.

he doesn’t hear her muttered words; dominic’s hearing has been adversely affected over the years of borderline guerilla warfare, through whether it’s just psychosomatic selective hearing or an actual medical issue remains a mystery. therefore, he takes circe’s silence as a win. dominic doesn’t hide his smirk when he latches the barred steel hatch behind the last dregs of their trubbish charges.

"whatever. you get... other benefits," he says vaguely, raising a shoulder in a shrug. sure, she’s a head scientist, but she’s lucky the pair of them share an unusual rapport.

the hatch slams shut and dominic turns on his heel to look at circe, his expression ambiguous but finally settling on something resembling smug satisfaction. he didn’t want to think about what was going on in his apartment, but he wouldn’t let the flicker of agitation show on his face. "sure. unless your place is closer?" it was worth a shot.

regardless, their job here was done. it’s time to disappear into the depths of the city.

it feels like stepping out of a pool of still water; dominic's body unfolds from the shadow beside marcel in exact place that he had vanished minutes prior. there's something pinched in his expression, eyebrows quirked into a frown.

"i've seen enough," he says after a heartbeat passes. "we should leave."

leave this outcropping of rock, leave this region entirely, leave the league to deal with it.

this particular area was far from the sea, and dominic had to take a moment to backpedal and release his pokemon - carefully - into a nearby fountain. the water splashes out the basin as the tentacruel's hefty mass materialises and fixes its beady, questioning stare at dominic.

dominic gestures vaguely at the spewpa with a wave of his hand and sits down on a bench to smoke. in turn, the tentacruel keeps staring at dominic for a long moment and then starts to copy the other released trainer pokemon as it snatches up the spewpa in its tentacles.

flitting among the potions slung their way, the togekiss's body would illuminate with a translucent sheen as it covered itself with a MAGIC COAT. on impact, the liquid glides simply off its feathers and is practically sent ricocheting back toward the galarian slowking that brewed them.

the path runs parallel to a body of water, and dominic soon opts to release one of his pokemon, a tentacruel to provide the pokemon an opportunity to traverse the depths in search of anything of interest. the tentacruel's body seems to bleed into the water, the gelatinous mass a LIQUID OOZE on the surface before disappearing below the surface.

dominic follows the curvature of the makeshift path until he sees scuttling in the shadows. he gives a piercing whistle, prompting his tentacruel to rise from the water, surveying him for a moment before following his gaze to where the roggenrola trotted. a tentacle quickly lashes out and constricts around the wild pokemon's body. dominic regards the creature as it wriggled around, its little legs kicking at the air, and then tosses out an empty pokeball to secure it.

capturing

when it’s over, when the sediment settles and everything becomes still once more, dominic will realise he’s disappointed. the chaos they unleashed was short lived and too clean; he prides himself on his efficiency as much as he loathes it.

as he watches the dhelmise’s chain draw the ship to the depths in a cold embrace, as the remnants of flames get swallowed by the sea, dominic bites the inside of his cheek and thinks that he wanted more. the consolation prize in his arms doesn’t feel like it’s enough to satiate the call for violence.

until the ship is taken in full, dominic’s hydreigon will coast along the air currents, only turning out back to the sea and to the direction of the submarine when gavin’s pokemon completed its task.

dominic’s lips twist into a smirk, but he doesn’t comment on her accusations. it’s better, he decides, to maintain something like plausible deniability rather than risk revealing things he rather keep close. "sure. and you’d know all about what they sell on the street," he counters, casual as he ushers the remainder of the pokemon through the pipes. they certainly seemed to shape up at least, marching in order and acting positively polite.

when his colleague next speaks, dominic’s expression seems to sour for a moment, his mouth growing taut at the edges as he shoots circe a reproachful, narrow-eyed glance. "yeah? your “reward” is your paycheck," dominic sneers. he lets a moment pass before speaking again. "i want a shower first. and i pick the place."

the native pokemon in their custody don't quite look right. dominic has seen any number of trainers, with their charges brought to heel using a variety of methods; drugging pokemon isn't necessarily something novel to him, and even so this looks distinct.

his vision is limited to awkward angles while he moves, creeping within the gloom. idly, dominic wonders if this is what their ghost types see when they enter their umbral forms and dissipate into nothing but wisps. he makes a few notes of the megapoloan numbers - people, pokemon, unknown beasts and equally foreign technology - and turns to make his way back to the fringe of the camp.
