In all of his years not once did Samuel ever challenge a single gym, he hadn’t given it much thought before. So imagine his surprise when once he finally decides to challenge that this would be its interior. But what was he expecting?

Well, he figured it’d be more of just a simple stadium setting with maybe a few banners here and there but not this. He couldn’t say he wasn’t into it though.

”This should be fun.” He mused to himself as he admired the décor.

”Hello! This is where I’m supposed to be, right?” He called out, stepping into the battle arena.

Katherine answers when Samuel enters, her eyes scanning him from head to toe. "If you have a challenge scheduled, then yes, this is the right place. But if you're here to apply for the new gym trainer position, then you only need to fill some papers at the reception."

Something tells the gym leader that this man wasn't here because he wanted to join her staff. And yet still, she opts to ask rather than make an assumption.

The sound of a door opening could be heard before Katherine's shiny Reuniclus floated inside. Soul closed the door after herself with the aid of a PSYCHIC, and then made her way towards her trainer. Still levitating in the air, the pokemon merely waited to hear whether if she'd be needed or not.

He honestly hadn’t expected to get an answer back so quickly, head-turning to lock eyes at the source which whom would be the exact person he was looking for.

”I’m here for the challenge.” He replied, stepping further into the room.

But since she had brought that up he was curious about what the process of becoming a gym trainer was like. Was it as simple as just filling out an app? Did you have to fight the leader so see if you were strong enough for it? It was probably all of the above, made the most sense to him at least.

As the leader’s Reuniclus was making its entrance Samuel would reach for his pocket and take out one of his capsules, throwing it to release the Glalie that was inside.

”You’d be my first one so I’m looking forward to this and having some fun.”

The Reuniclus shifted some in the air, almost as if offended by her trainer. Their expression, however, is devoid of any sadness that she may have felt. It'd take more than that to penetrate through the psychic-type's walls.

"You are my first challenge of the day." It wasn't very comparable to one's first gym challenge, but still. "As long as you remain focused and trust your partner, it should be fun." Some challenges happened to bore Katherine, sure, but she imagined that those who came to challenge her always enjoyed themselves.

Her gym's interiors were like no other's, she looked great, and her Pokemon were perfectly capable of putting up a good fight. What was there not to admire and love?

”Oh the first, huh? Hope I this’ll be a good start to your day.” Their foe would be the Reuniclus, Samuel going through his mind all the information that he had on the Pokémon from past experiences.

A crafty Pokémon and one not to be underestimated, this'll be fun.

”Glalie, are you ready?” He’d ask his Ice Pokémon, the response he got being in the form of a roar.

”Alright let’s start with something simple. Freeze-Dry.” Samuel ordered, finger pointed at the opposing Psychic-Type.

Between the horns of the Glalie a light blue ball of energy formed as the Pokémon charged this energy and then fired a beam of energy from the orb and towards the Reuniclus, using FREEZE-DRY.

The liquid surrounding the Reuniclus freezes solid at the touch of Glalie's FREEZE-DRY, causing the pokemon to turn into a massive glob of ice. A moment passes and then another before the ice shatters to small pieces, a PSYCHIC breaking through the frost Soul had been encased within.

"Give him a taste of his own medicine." The PSYCHIC continues, and the control over the shards of ice is maintained.

"Shoot." At the command of the gym leader, each of those shards are shot at the ice-type in a blast of telekinetic force.

Samuel smiled at the Gym Leader’s response to the Freeze-Dry attack.

”Iron Head. Let’s go straight through.” Samuel ordered.

The Pokemon used IRON HEAD making the top of its head glow a bright silver color as the Pokémon then tilted over and charged straight for the Reuniclus.

The Glalie’s now steel-hard head would crash into the shards, the Pokémon would be unrelenting in its charge and endure whatever damage as it forced its way through the shards with its steel head and towards the Psychic Pokémon.

Soul doesn't move an inch.

The Glalie's approach doesn't deter the psychic-type or forces it to respond with fear to the eventual IRON HEAD. Instead, it simply waits until the ice-type is close - only a couple of inches away - and then, with a snap of her trainer's fingers, Soul shields herself with an invisible barrier of PROTECT. It's as sturdy as a wall, intent on keeping her rival away and to stop it in the midst of his tracks.

It's a test to see how well both Samuel and his pokemon adapt to a situation. Do they capitalize on the situation and respond to change gracefully, or does it startle them?

Keeping their composure when threading the line as close as they were kept the smile on Samuel’s face going, he was enjoying this battle so far.

The PROTECT stopped Glalie’s attack but it wouldn’t faze the duo.

”Create space and use Earthquake.” Samuel ordered. His Glalie would stop pressing against the barrier that was between it and the Reuniclus and instead quickly retreated back to its starting positioning, the Glalie making sure to face the Pokémon as it did so.

And as the Glalie moved back it used EARTHQUAKE, slamming its body onto the ground and creating violent shockwaves through the ground. Samuel would keep a close eye on the Reuniclus and how it responded to the ground below it shaking and distorting.

Her command is short and sweet, and it promotes her psychic-type to do none other than what she requested: it aims at Glaile an attack that has yet to show itself. Energy is collected and slowly amassed at the core of the pokemon, charging ominously.

It is only when the ice-type slams its body against the ground that the Reuniclus releases its attack and launch a powerful HYPER BEAM, sacrificing any chance at defending itself now (and later) at the cost of inflicting serious damage on its rival now.

Katherine maintains her posture despite the shockwaves that travel through the floor and threaten to cause her to trip.

Samuel’s careful eye on the Reniclus allowed him to catch the Pokémon gathering energy. He didn’t like to look of that at all.

”Glalie, brace yourself with Protect!” Samuel called out to his Pokémon, warning it of a possible attack. The Reuniclus would then launch a HYPER BEAM attack at Glalie.

The Glalie would use PROTECT but it would not save itself completely from the attack.

The beam had reached the Glalie and the Ice-type suffered from some damage before it could get its barrier up to protect itself from the rest of the damage.

”Well that was close. Not holding back, huh? That was one hell of an attack.”

It's either a rookie mistake that the gym leader makes or an oversight. Regardless of the nature of her error, the HYPER BEAM comes with the cost of leaving her Reuniclus vulnerable as it charges its energy. It's expected and a known side effect of the move.

There's little both her pokemon and her can do now. The ice-type is kept in her stare, as she expects some follow-up attack. Another freeze-dry? Another shockwave? Her mind makes several leaps of logic, as if it's a chess game that's being played.

Expecting a move is one thing, but preparing for it happened to be a lot more complicated.

"It took too long to charge," She comments, half to herself and half to the trainer on the opposite side of the arena. "But it can be fixed with more practice."

The ball is still in Samuel's court.

”Glalie, are you alright?” The Pokémon might have been able to get a barrier up to protect itself but it hadn’t done so in enough time to prevent all damage so it was best to assess its condition.

Samuel smiled at the Glalie’s response to his question, letting out a roar to show signs of being fit to continue.

”Good because now it’s time to strike back.” Since the Reuniclus just fished using Hyper Beam it would take a moment before it could attack again, making it an easy target.

”Another Freeze-Dry.” Samuel ordered. And like the last time the Pokémon used FREEZE-DRY a beam of light blue energy was fired from an orb in between the Glalie’s horns and straight for the Renuiclus.

There's nothing the psychic-type can do in order to defend against this FREEZE-DRY. Still recharging her energy, Reuniclus takes the damage in full. It causes her to cry in pain as the frost reaches the inner parts of her body, freezing parts of the blue liquid into ice.

"Hold on, Soul. You can take it, I know you can."

The gym leader's words prove to invigorate her pokemon some, who stifles her cry and attempts to exert some psychic-force in order to lessen the damage done against her. It works— but not in the way the pokemon expects it to. Despite the damage being lessened, the FREEZE-DRY encases her in a sphere of solid ice, leaving her FROZEN.

It spells the end of the battle for the gym leader and Samuel's victory.

Katherine smiles all while recalling her partner to their Pokeball and retrieving a badge from her bag, "Here you go. You and your Glalie fought well." She makes her way over, stepping on small pieces of ice and a bit of snow until she's facing Samuel.

"Not bad for your first challenge, by the way." The clairvoyance badge is offered to him, ready to be claimed.
