An enclosed wildlife area... such a vast expanse of it, too. Sven had never seen anything quite like it before. Lupa, herself, seemed to feel rather peculiar about it herself. But they were told to come for the experience, so here they were. The rangers would be pleased.[break][break]

A white paw broke past the barrier of palm leaves barring the way, their shimmering drops of dew shaking or sliding off soundlessly as the Absol pulled herself through. The moisture in the air was fresh and cool. The young man who followed along behind her seemed entranced by it. He rose a single hand in the air to feel it.[break][break]

Neither of them took notice of the small Castform hiding behind a boulder nearby. It had been left behind by its billow. It was still far too young and timid to approach this pair of strangers.[break]

Just as their hike through the safari zone was gaining some momentum, Lupa motioned for Sven to freeze. There was an odd silence, followed by the flutter of birds flying out of trees nearby. A rustle of leaves. A foreboding wind. Then, out of seemingly nowhere, a wild Morpeko riding an AURA WHEEL blasted by them before running out of sight in seconds.[break][break]

If Lupa hadn't stopped them when she did, they would have surely been run over. Sven just wasn't sure whether he should thank her FUTURE SIGHT, SUPER LUCK, or both.[break]

Lupa had scouted ahead. By the time Sven had caught up to her, he came to find the Absol in a heated staring contest with the Anorith submerged in the river's bank. Neither creature blinked as they continued. Sven froze in place without even thinking.[break][break]

When the Anorith finally caved and blinked, however, it quickly scurried backwards and away into the darkness of the river. It seemed either embarrassed, frustrated, fearful, or all of the above. Sven almost laughed.[break]

A juvenile Shinx had chosen to follow them along for a mile or two. It jumped from bush to bush, practicing its hunting technique playfully before crashing into Lupa's leg by accident. For a moment, upside-down on the ground with its tail swinging in the air, the Shinx blinked and looked up at the intimidating beast. But then she lowered her head, and gently rubbed the side of its face with hers.[break][break]

The juvenile brightened and quickly got up onto all four feet again to play. But the call of its mother nearby suddenly captured its attention. And it was off before either Absol or trainer could say goodbye.[break]

Without warning, the little spider descended onto Sven's face and clasped itself to it with all of its mandibles and legs. Its vicious bite preceded a burst of RAGEPOWDER from its abdomen as the young ranger stumbled about frantically and tried to pry the bug off with his fingers. Lupa, unable to attack the Spinarak without possible hurting Sven, encircled him frantically as she tried to find some opening to help.[break][break]

Sven's grunts of struggle slowly turned into whimpers of pain as the poison from the bite seeped into the veins in his face. Lupa finally decided to attack with NIGHT SLASH but made a fatal mistake when—[break][break]

Yeah, nope. Not going to happen.[break][break]

Having used her FUTURE SIGHT, the Absol shoved a currently healthy and unharmed Sven towards the eastern route rather than the western one. The Spinarak waiting to ambush its prey on the latter would have to go wanting today.[break]

The Tympole had only been born in these waters two days ago. Unlike its multitude of brothers and sisters, however, it strayed away to explore closer to the riverbank. There, it was delighted with the presence of other pokémon, lots of food, and beautiful sunlight.[break][break]

This venture would come to an abrupt end when a giant clawed foot suddenly plunged in the water beside it. Lupa had come to wash the mud off her paw.[break]
