her people had never truly grown accustomed to the cold - and she doubted they ever would. cait felt sluggish in both mind and body when she was forced to endure such conditions, little more than a trembling and miserable mess beneath her thick coat.

"rose," her companion grumbled.

"i know, roserade," cait muttered. "but we just have to deal with it."

the grass-type huffed, his warm and expensively-made cloak composed of a crimson material fluttering in the chilled winds that plagued the surrounding area. she navigated the snow and the greenery buried beneath with obvious difficulty, forced to strain herself in order to make any amount of progress.

'that delibird should be around here, i think.'

she fully intended to locate the bird and escort it from 'point a' to 'b' as quickly as possible.

'i'm on orders to help - so i guess the delibird has an item of value; otherwise the league wouldn't be intervening on its behalf.'

both her and her pokemon continued down the path, searching for their 'client' all the while as their gazes swiveled to and fro.

"n-no, I understand." francie had been lectured about four ways to sunday about how dangerous this mission was going to be. "we won't be taking it lightly," she explained. "we'll be taking this with the utmost care and respect, ma'am."

once again the woman, who owned the delibrid, nodded and started to bid her precious little bird farewell.

in a way, it was cute. in another way, francie couldn't believe the amount of affection the woman was giving to her pokémon but at the same time admiring it. maybe it was awkward because it was in public? either way, francie looked away a few times and then finally watched as the delibird started to walk forward.

"no wait hang on!" francie tried to reason with the dual type. "i'm waiting on--" oh, and there she was, right? yep, green hair, francie was told she'd have green hair. "great! there you are! ooop, and here we go." francie laughed because that made it a little less annoying of a situation- if she found it comical instead of annoying.

"stubborn old bird." she mumbled low enough that the woman who was blowing her delibird goodbye kisses wouldn't be able to hear her. holding her hand out to the girl, francie smiled. "i'm francie, petalburg's gym leader. it's nice to meet you. i really hope you're the green haired girl that i'm supposed to take this delivery mission with, otherwise, this is really awkward."

'she's a gym leader?'

cait managed a smile, successfully maintaining the expression as she subtly swept her gaze across the slip of a girl. the blond could accurately be described as boasting a more simplistic form of beauty; her features soft yet pretty. but, from the officer's perspective, she failed to physically represent her official title.

'you were taught not to judge a book by it's cover. it's unbecoming.'

"oh - uh - yes! i'm miss alfric. it's an honor."

she'd reach out with the intention of shaking the woman's hand, her grin broadening out somewhat as she recovered from her surprise.

"i'm the one you're looking for," she assured. "i received my orders from the league roughly two days ago."

cait gestured toward her companion, whom was in the midst of squinting at the delibird.

"and this is my companion, roserade," she said. "he's not exactly the friendly sort, i'm afraid. but he'll be useful if we run into any... complications."

she'd offer the delibird's owner a wave, hoping that her presence would ease the woman's fears as they began to make their way toward the route and down the pre-determined path.

"sorry about being late, ma'am. don't really have much of an excuse for getting a bit turned around."

the very first thing that francie noticed was just how polite and nice this girl was. it was amazing to find members of the league that weren't all seriousness or business. though, she supposed FERNANDO SILPH was a terrible example of the league as a whole. he wasn't the face of the league either, but francie hadn't had the opportunity to meet kim just yet.

"alfric's a very pretty name." francie ... wasn't. it was 'cute' at best. she envied people with pretty names.

at mention of orders from the league francie couldn't help but smile. how swell! somebody else who got orders from up top and actually followed them. another moment later and francie was introduced to cait's roserade, to whom francie gave a small bow before standing back up again.

"well it's a pleasure to meet you both," francie admitted out loud. "and don't worry about being late, if anything that woman could have held her tarous a few more minutes. she was impatient.. or maybe that was him being impatient." francie lifted a pointed brow at the delibird before them, then furrowed her eyebrows at him. "he seems the more impatient than patient type, you know? and so serious about his presents..."

'she seems normal.'

the girl's notably lax and warm nature despite her holding a superior position proved itself to be like a breath of fresh air to cait.

"rose," her pokemon murmured.

to the officer's surprise, the dual-type responded to the polite bow with his own.

"it should take us roughly two or three hours to get where we need to go," she surmised.

inwardly, she feared her guesswork would prove unreliable in these conditions - cait uncertain of the weather due to its unpredictability as of late. it was tolerable for now, at the very least; the sky dark but only releasing the occasional bit of snowy powder.

"so you're a gym leader..."

cait tentatively raised the topic of francie's position after a silence had befallen their little group.

"i've only really met one before," she said. "he was a handsome man - but... troubled. yes, i believe that's the right word for it."

she pause for only a moment, considering carefully what questions she'd like to ask.

"do you enjoy it? being a gym leader, i mean. i imagine during times like these it'd be difficult."

cait didn't doubt that there were individuals whom actively sought to bring francie under harm's way, her name and face recognizable and her position likely increasing her value as a target.

'would i even be willing to take on such a position?'

she doubted she'd have the mental fortitude to manage such a burden.

Francie wasn't sure she evern weighed the possibility that she was in harms way while being a Gym Leader. Yes, obviously it was possible, but perhaps it just never... clicked to her, that her life could be in danger. She just assumed if something terrible were to happen, the city would have her back. While they had a problem accepting somebody so young, small, and female as their lead - with their small minded nature as a small town in the woods - she knew that a lot of them had tried to help her out on more than one occasion. She didn't doubt that they'd do it again if needed.

"I think it'd be silly to be worried about threats that may or may not come, but instead to prepare about them and then deal with them as they do appear." Francie smiled warmly at the Delibird in front of her, the stubborn thing trecking through the snow. A bit how she felt trying to figure this whole Gym Leader thing out in general.

"It's not easy, I'll admit that. And sometimes, I'm fairly certain I'm doing it wrong." Francie couldn't help how she laughed at herself. "But I've never felt more myself, or more at peace with doing something. I traveled around for over ten years trying to figure out where I fit. I tried it all, but in the end, protecting whatever I thought was important ended up taking my full attention."

As the Delibird stopped, Francie did as well, looking around. There was a tension around that Delibird, it must have sensed something was the mater. Without much hesitation, out popped Lyonel, one of Francie's Rockruffs. She'd released him once the Delibird stopped for longer than gathering his barings.

"I think there's something close, probably some wild Pokémon looking to take whatever gifts our Delibird's got in his sack."

she considered the gym leader's words, noting that there was an astonishing amount of wisdom contained within her response.

'being league by itself is difficult - but being a gym leader doesn't seem like a burden i could manage.'

cait blinked, fresh memories of what had occurred at slateport only a month prior shifting to the forefront of her mind. she thought of the death and the splattering of crimson as both pokemon and humans alike fell. the blood of civilians had been spilled as the rockets happily executed non-combatants.

'we lost so many of our comrades, too.'

the death toll had been depressingly high that day, with cait reminded of the moment when she had been given a list of those whom were either confirmed dead or missing.

'i could only read a few of those names before i just... couldn't anymore.'

"this war," she said. "it's a terrible thing, isn't it?"

cait fell silent for only a moment, the brief window of time spent in contemplation.

"surviving is going to be hard - but i'm thankful we have people like you to lead us, ma'am. we'll be fine."

'i hope we'll make it - i pray we'll make it.'

the mention of a something or someone being near caused all whom comprised their party to veer their focus toward it. the conversation was abandoned, temporarily, in favor of focusing on the task at hand.

"my pokemon aren't the strongest trackers," she admitted. "but i brought along someone who can scout."

her butterfree appeared only a moment later, fluttering before the human females as she awaited orders from her mistress.

"butterfree, scout out the area - if you see anything suspicious you come back to me immediately to let me know."

"freee," her pokemon crooned, nodding her head before she departed.

admittedly, francie hadn't seen what happened at slateport, she'd only heard. it was enough though, to cause the girl to want to become gym leader and make a damned difference. in a way she was thankful for the subject change. yes, the war was bad. yes, what was happening was bad, but it was necessary. for whatever reason, it was necessary. bad things sometimes happened but such good came of them, didn't that make it necessary? unfortunate, terrible, terrifying, but ... necessary. a very bittersweet thing to think, and that's why she kept it to herself and kept her mouth shut.

fortunately, the threat ahead was a more important focus. francie turned her full attention forward, smiling at the scout. "good, then I can keep my rockruffs close and use them as our protection." she nodded down at the pups and off they went, spreading out in a small semi-circle around the delibird.

feeling protected, though skeptical and francie swore she could hear the thing chortle at her pups, the delibird moved forward. the rockruffs kept their positions, alert as they slowly began moving forward.

"i wouldn't be too terribly worried," francie started with a warm tone, attention forward, or she'd be looking at the girl politely. "it's probably just some wild pokémon thinking they can get a quick treat from the delibird's bag. i have a feeling this isn't the first time he's been on this route."

butterfree navigated the skies without difficulty, her wings taking advantage of the light but chilled breeze that offered her a helpful lift and assisted in her hovering.

"free," she chimed.

the bug-type's gaze shifted to and fro, her head swiveling back and forth upon narrow shoulders as she sought to catch a glimpse of whomever may be hiding among the frost-laden greenery.

"free?"

there was nothing that would immediately grab her attention - and nothing that could be considered 'suspicious' by her mistress's standards. she'd linger for several moments before returning, her green-eyed human peering at her expectantly as she did so.

"free."

"nothing?"

cait's well-groomed eyebrows rose high upon her forehead before she shifted her attentions toward her superior.

"the tree cover is either too effective or whatever it was got away," cait reasoned. "but it seems we're alright for now."

the butterfree's head bowed, a look of disappointment lightly twisting at her features as she realized she had failed to report anything of use. the grass and bug-type specialist smiled fondly in reaction to such an expression, her gaze radiating with warmth.

"it's alright, girl," the woman soothed. "you did your best."

So basically, they were back on square one. Francie couldn't say she was surprised, but she did feel a little uneasy. But, she decided to trust in her partner's judgement. "Guess we'll just have to keep alert then, hm?"

Francie decided to stay positive, despite the possibility that the Delibird was in danger. They were growing closer with each passing moment and Francie loved that Cait was just as capable as she was at keeping herself aware of her surroundings.

"We're almost there, I can see the town entrance from here." Francie said with delight, but as if the wild Pokémon could hear her, she saw figured approaching the Delibird quickly. Her hands immediately released her Rockruffs, ordering them forward. "Protect the Delibrid!"

Two of the Rockruffs created a stone barrier with STONE EDGE around the Delibird on the side that wild Pokémon had approached, making sure to separate them while another used ROCK SLIDE against the wild Pokémon, causing the rocks and snow from above the Stone Edge barrier to fall down the side of the small slope and roll into the wild Pokémon and slam them against the rock barrier.

Too bad there were wild Pokémon coming from the opposite side, but Francie had faith that Cait would take care of those.
