she stared at the woman with awe, taking in her dark skin and her bright eyes. her mind compared mother and son, noting the hair - the melanin present within their skin - their features. it was almost like the genetics skipped and favored one parent over the other.

'oh.'

cait looked down at her own children, wondering if senon's lineage was at fault for the obvious disparity in appearance.

'that... tracks,' she acknowledged.

at least there was a possible answer to that question.

"i'm fine," she said. "a little tired. but that's to be expected."

hypno moved to attend to her master, retrieving a cloth and insisting on cleaning senon's face despite his protests. a smile tugged at the corners of the avatar's lips, primose's suckling becoming less intent as the babe became full.

"it's nice to finally meet you."

"gods, i hope," she sighed.

maybe without the constant missions, her husband-to-be would realize life simply lived wasn't utterly lacking in fulfillment.

"i'm trying to convince him to open a restaurant in fortree. do you know he actually went to school for it? and he has a genuine talent in the kitchen - its his element. i honestly think that's where he belongs."

he could also focus on being a father and a husband. there was always work to be done in that department. she'd make sure he was happy - even if he persisted on acting glum for the foreseeable future.

"what have you been up to since giving up the seat? it's nice having so much time, isn't it?"

cait quickly took a peek into the nursery as she spoke, the door already cracked open. her pair were snoozing away, which was a relief. they weren't particularly sensitive to noise.

cait startled and hypno stiffened, the connected pair sharing a glance. the young mother found herself holding both of the twins in each arm, watching as the psychic-type rose to quickly investigate the source of the commotion. hypno would stare blankly at the sight of her felled master, mild bemusement twisting at her usually stoic features.

- master, are you well? -

her pinprick gaze shifted toward what was likely the parents of the young master. the pokemon cocked her head to the side, taking in their appearance before mentally easing her mistress's fears.

- family, my lady. it's only family. it appears to be the master's parents. they have an odd way of greeting their child, it seems. -

"senon? are you okay?"

she appeared to be satisfied by the compliment, maintaining her look of contentedness. of course, her exterior merely reflected the pleasure she presently felt. when he mentioned her wayward fiancée, cait gave a sigh lined with mild weariness.

"he's in one of his moods," she informed. "and i'm sure you already know the reason behind it. i hope he didn't cause a scene."

cait considered the time, half-tempted to 'blow up his phone' as usual. now that he was no longer distracted by his ranger duties, they could prioritize gathering resources and solidifying a plan to escape the meteoroid.

"come in and relax," she invited. "i'll call him. but i doubt he'll answer. how's the wife?"

the idea of rushing their marriage along didn't sit well with the woman. it was an event that required a careful amount of planning. and she wanted to make sure it was perfect. she'd invite family, friends and the entirety of her tribe if they were both willing and able to join in the festivities.

but now?

she thinks of the destruction that could potentially be wrought in the not-so-distant future. would she lose everything?

'no. we'll all be together in the end.'

"i'll think about it," she murmured.

she wouldn't say no outright - but she most definitely wouldn't concede to the idea. arceus would understand, surely, if such a celebration was held following hoenn's ruin.

"the..." she paused, searching for an appropriate term for it. "... the other me would have married the other you if given the opportunity. i actually had a dream she tried whisking you away. can you imagine? being involved in modern-aged groomnapping? i'd have saved you of course."

cait pecked him on the cheek, the mood lightening somewhat.

FERNANDO SILPH had sent her a message on a private channel regarding the decision before her fiancée had shared the 'unfortunate' news.

he had been dismissed.

she was immensely satisfied with the knowledge that senon was no longer the head ranger. but she had to keep up appearances and feign some semblance of displeasure and outrage.

"'i'm so sorry, baby.'"

cait peered into the mirror, managing a sorrowful look.

she paused and cocked her head to the side.

"'i can't believe this happened. why would they - ?'"

the woman broke out into a broad smile. but such a look would promptly vanish as she heard a knock upon the door. she blinked, bemused but secure in the knowledge that it was likely either John Sullivan or even kim cole-essam . very few individuals were allowed to enter her property without her being alerted, after all.

"kim?"

the young woman's appearance was that of the modern day housewife. modestly dressed in a blouse and skirt, with her hair pulled into a high ponytail and her make up expertly done.

"i'm surprised to see you here."

she'd move to pull him into a hug, happy to be greeted by such a familiar face.

her gaze settled upon the expanse of heavily scarred flesh. the woman experienced a sudden surge of emotion at the memory surrounding their origins, one which resulted in the young mother tightening her hold upon her babe.

'gods,' she thought.

her belly churned and she swallowed thickly.

"you should have stayed," she said, her tone firm. "we all should. until we're adults and ready to make that decision for ourselves and never before."

cait would fight to keep her children for as long as possible.

iseult stepped across the boundary that separated her land from the outside world, having accepted the young mother's invitation. they would press onward into cait's personal domain at a leisurely pace, the former gym leader appearing somewhat lax in the woman's presence.

"i assume you personally attend to fernando?"

there was a brief pause followed by an inquiry laden with concern.

"is he doing alright? has he been eating well?"

she hadn't seen the man in-person for a period of time and she naturally worried about his wellbeing.

"lord celebi has been terribly worried about him - and so have i."

the woman gave a short laugh as she processed the man's response.

"dear gods no."

cait briefly recalled a moment when senon and her occupied an island by the lonesome, the woman having been perched upon a rock when she openly disparaged the idea of their future children inheriting their sire's temperament and likeness.

"i'd much rather they take after someone with a calmer demeanor. i can only hope these two aren't throwing themselves into terrible danger by the age of ten."

she stroked enca's chin with a finger.

"i'm hopeful they'll stay with me until their eighteen, at least. but i'm not holding my breath."

"no, you haven't," cait replied.

her expression remain unchanged as she responded to the woman's concern of being a bother. but her freckle features soon softened as she considered her choice - and the consequences of refusing to provide aid. after all, the idea of children starving due to her unwillingness to help did not sit well with the woman.

"i will make a compromise. i will allow ten - and only ten acres to be used for the sole purpose of providing resources to hospitals, orphanages and foster homes."

she beckoned the woman to come closer with the curl of her fingers, encouraging her not to leave.

"i also wish to know more about you. you work for fernando - but i haven't had the pleasure to make your acquaintance. i'd like to invite you to my home for a tea and a small meal so we can talk."

the woman appeared taken aback by the request, halting abruptly in her steady march back home to turn toward iseult.

"absolutely not."

her answer was carried onward by a tone that left very little room for argument.

"it's the league's responsibility to feed the population. isn't it? i've five-hundred acres which comfortably accommodates my pokemon. i use only a portion of that to farm for resources. presently a large percentage is going toward my compound of origin - my tribe, to be more specific. while what remains goes toward me and fernando's company."

she paused, politely allowing her immediate response to the request sink in for a moment.

"the milk, meat, water, vegetation and fruits i produce will go toward these three parties."

cait tilted her chin up as her eyes narrow.

"i won't allow my land to be used to ease the league's burden. it's not my responsibility."

"'better circumstances.'"

she gave a snort.

"right."

the subject is quickly changed and she gestures for iseult to follow.

"fernando mentioned something about food production. which makes for an understandable concern considering that we'll no longer receive imported goods. i imagine prices are skyrocketing in the local markets. thank arceus that i'm completely self-sufficient in regards to keeping my family and i fed."

she paused briefly and threw a curious look over her shoulder at the woman.

"tell me what you need from me. if it's a favor for fernando, i'll consider it."

she manages a smile.

"oh?"

the sky is clear, the familiar shimmer of stars expertly concealing the object that hurtled toward them as this very moment.

"i suppose we could always hide underground."

such an idea had come upon her a while ago. and she took it somewhat seriously, beginning the process of canning and prepping all manner of food. with her power of growth and healing they could potentially last - they could even survive if they were careful.

'but the aelfric tribe will be wiped out.'

yet her people did not did not despair - for it was against their nature to do so. at the moment they celebrated their life and history; spending what was likely the remainder of their days praying and enjoying the time that they had left.

"we should get married. when this is all over."

the date had been an unknown, but she was struck with the urge to plan. if - by some miracle - they survived - she didn't want to wait for another disaster to rob her of this chance.
