THE OPERATION: Kazimir Wynter [GYM]
POSTED ON Apr 13, 2021 17:55:42 GMT
John Sullivan Avatar

A large, modular, general-purpose military tent stands exactly where the coordinates point. Inside, a tall, well dressed Officer awaits from the other end of the room, his arms folded behind his back. His gazes slowly moves away from the many maps spread over the long table set between yourselves to settle on your own.

Three light bulbs hang off the spine holding up the tent, their incandescent yellow light working in tandem with the man's cap to cast a strong shadow over his gaze.

He seems slightly familiar... but the clothing and mannerisms are so alien to the person that such feelings quickly go away.

"Greetings, challenger. I am Captain Douglas, the Gym Leader." He said, before leaning forward and bringing a single hand to the table, revealing a docket he had been hiding behind his back and sliding it across the table with a swipe.

"I trust you know what you signed up for." The Officer said, "All the information you need pertaining the operation is there."

With a gesture of his arm, he brought attention to many unique items spread over a table.

"You may choose a single one as loadout." He said, before bringing that same gesturing arm back to the table, his finger pressing over a single, particular map. Two spots were marked; blue, and red. "You may choose your starting point, as well."

With his words said, the Officer folded his arms behind himself once again, nodding.

"Weight your choices as if the dangers and consequences of this Operation were real, Challenger Wynter." He said. "Good luck."

THE OPERATION

Map of the Installations.

CHOICES

  • You may sneak into the installations through either the red or blue spots marked on the map.

LOADOUT

Choose one (1):
  • Radar: Upon activation, allows one to see through walls or elevated areas until the batteries run out. [3 turn duration]
  • Smokebomb/Pokedoll: A single use, free get-out-of-jail card for a deadly failed roll. Preparation and a little luck pays off in dividends.
  • Running Shoes: Special Shoes that can temporarily bolster speed when activated. Move action can now cover up to 3 Squares, but the shoes are feeble and tear swiftly. [2 'Move' Actions]

VICTORY CONDITION

Eliminate the Enemy Leader.

FAILURE CONDITION

  • All pokemon are 'killed' in action.
  • is 'killed' in action.

DETAILS & CONDITIONS

  • You've 10 rounds to locate and eliminate the enemy Leader.
  • You are allowed 3 Pokemon of choice.

SUMMARY

Operative Wynter, you are tasked with eliminating the terrorist Leader. Intel claims they'll be visiting the facility at a specific time of night. You are advised to prioritize stealth, but how you handle the mission is left to your discretion.

REMEMBER THAT:
  • The terrorist group has set a number of soldiers as watchmen around the perimeter.
  • The skies are constantly monitored, so flight should be kept to extremely short distances, if utilized at all.
  • It’s been confirmed that Growlithe are being implemented as security measures. These are pokemon with an extremely acute sense of smell- but the terrorists’ batch has relatively poor discipline. Handle with care.
  • Terrorist soldiers are armed with assault rifles and have access to radio communication. However, they wear helmets for protection and face coverings intended to protect their identities, both of which limit their visibility and dim their hearing. Keep this in mind, but do not underestimate them or their senses.
  • Remember that pokeballs are a thing. No guard is ever truly alone- and they'll surely employ their pokemon if sufficiently suspicious or alerted.

GAMEPLAY MECHANICS

There’s elements of Choose-your-own-story, as well as an economy of actions.

Missions are timed. The Challenger has 10 posting rounds to accomplish their objective.

Player’s have an economy of two actions per round. Their commands are:

  • Move [1-2 squares, provided no insurmountable obstacles; All Trainer movement is stealthy, so long as one evades a guard's line-of-sight.]
  • Action Command (Can be anything; using a pokemon move, commanding a pokemon to scout, attacking a guard, etc.)
  • Shoot [2 bullets, target can be up to 4 squares away, provided no cover/obstacles. Difficulty may increase with distance.]

The player can Move twice if desired. They can forego moving at all and make two Action Commands instead as well.

ACTION COMMAND

Every round, the player is free to decide what they'll do and how they'll handle their current circumstances. For every Action Command taken, they must roll a dice.

As the DM, The Gym Leader looks upon their actions, judges the level of risk and reward on a (Low | Mid | High) scale each, and then determines if the result of their roll was enough.

The consequences of a failed roll are context dependent.

A Growlithe failing a roll on an attempted Odor Sleuth may simply not find anything, or even lead their trainer astray, but not immediately pay any consequences other than lost time.

A Growlithe failing a roll to scout an as-of-yet unseen, unexplored part of the map will be taken out.

Your pokemon can only attack someone/something it can see, and only with the means available to it. For example, If it doesn't have incredible speed, or a move of considerable range, then attacking a far away enemy is either impossible or of exceedingly high risk/difficulty.If the player is not entirely certain of whether an action would or wouldn't cost a pokemon, feel free to ask the Leader directly.

Despite its mechanics, the game is fairly free form, and so, if a Challenger is uncertain of whether something is allowed or how a specific action they have in mind would play out, they are encouraged to discuss it directly with the Gym Leader over Discord.

CHOICES

Sometimes, players will be given 2 to 3 choices to make based on their previous actions. These choices are context dependent, and generally offer both something to gain and lose. Choices don’t cost the action economy.

as he entered the tent and was greeted by the officer kazimir was a little taken back. the guy was really going full on serious with the whole military motif he had going on with this gym. even the documentation he was handed was as properly made like it was the real thing. of course he was told to treat it as such and probably for good reason, this challenge was going to probably be tougher than the usual kinds. as he read over what he needed to do he was brought forth to choose some equipment to take along with him, and very quickly did he take the SMOKEBOMB/POKEDOLL along with him as he headed out to the field starting out in the RED AREA of the map.

"ok let's cover some ground first, itty bitty? up for a run little fella?" he asked his joltik as it crawled along his shoulder and was greeted with a light rubbing of kazimir's finger as he MOVED UP NORTH of the map before setting the little spider down onto the ground. as its feet touched solid ground it sped off to try and SCOUT ahead to see if there were any dangers ahead of their path, its small size making it perfect for sneaking around in and out of places undetected. hopefully that same luck would help them out during this mission of theirs.

tldr;
- kazimir takes smokebomb for loadout
- kazimir moves up two squares up from the red starting area
- kazimir has joltik scout ahead 3 squares to the left for trouble.

ROUND 2

You emerge from within a hole on the wall into a forest area, segmented from the rest of the installations. Nothing as far as can be immediately seen, a confident, stealthy advance is to be expected.

Even before you send out your Joltik however, you can see the signs of trouble in the distance. Further north in the distance, the distinct shape of a man stands out from the shadows, a rifle in his grasp. His body language is lax and unalert, the much greater threat being the Growlithe running circles excitedly around him.

One danger identified, your Joltik is sent out to scout, and it does with exemplar results. As it advances west, Itty Bitty witnesses many things; most eye-catching in the beginning is the sight a pickup truck moving through the roads beneath the elevated ground the spider treads.

The Joltik can see that the road leads towards the westmost exit of the Forest, were faint, human shaped figures seem to stand guard at some sort of toll booth.

The slow, trudging pickup truck fades in the background however as the Itty Bitty suddenly sees something in deeper inside the forest. A shape that does not belong amongst the foliage; utterly manmade... A cabin in the woods. And if he strains his ears, he can swear he hears the sound of a voice... shouting...? Trying to, perhaps?

There's not much time to think about it, however. The chilling sight of powerful claw marks are left upon the bark of several trees surrounding the Cabin... In fact... A lumbering shadow can be seen moving between the trees and undergrowth, west from the cabin.

This information is relayed back to Kazimir upon the Joltik's return.

With all this in mind... What do you do?

OPERATION KAZIMIR

Map of the Installations.

STATUS REPORT

- advances two squares; he can see in the distance a Rocket facing away. Beyond the guard, the far away, distant vista of warehouses.

-Itty Bitty the Joltik stealthily advances through the forest' undergrowth, completely undetected. While scouting, he sights a pickup truck advancing through the road westward, towards the westmost exit of the forest.

-Itty Bitty sights a cabin deep inside the woods, hearing what he believes might be muffled shouts from inside... He also finds several signs of a powerful, predatorial pokemon near it.

-Itty Bitty sights a large, ursine figure lumbering through the woods. The large pokemon thankfully does not notice the tiny spider, allowing it to crawl back to Kazimir to deliver the intel.

"surrounded on all sides huh? sounds like our kind of odds." kaz smiled as he processed the information his little spider gave him before placing the bug onto his shoulder as they moved ahead. as they moved EAST along the path laid out thanks to itty bitty's reconnaissance, kaz taking a careful look at the shadow of the thug and his growlithe in the distance as they moved along. he figured it was best to try and not get into any fights right off the bat despite that being more of his style. he was on the clock and sometimes taking it slow was the way to go!

that caution would come in handy as they were nearing what he figured was their first crossroads as they took a second to stop. ahead of them was a truck heading along the road. his first thought was to jump onto it but there was also that cabin that his joltik told him about. shouting and a strange large pokemon wandering around? it was probably the most dangerous route they could take.

which is why its the exact one to take!

as the sounds of tires on pavement grew closer kazimir decided to move farther away from it, traversing NORTH and into what felt like elevated land and trees that hopefully hide his presence from any humans nearby as he nears the CABIN where he could start to make out the faint sound of voices. hopefully the trees around him would protect him from whatever was roaming around. luckily he came prepared.

tldr;
- kazimir MOVES UP TWO SPACES!
- kazimir MOVES UP ONE SPACE then moves ONE SPACE LEFT to get closer to the CABIN

ROUND 3

You now stand by the cabin. Just approaching seemed like a daunting task earlier, when the steps of the lurking ursine thudded heavily through the forest's undergrowth nearby.

This close to the building, you can see a few windows, some of which are cracked, and the closer you come, the clearer the voice inside becomes. Peering inside through the frames reveals a tame but informative sight.

There's an old, soot covered hearth connected to the chimney above the roof.

Old bookcases filled with tomes, as well a small dining table, with a man dressed as an officer tied to a chair. His head hung low, he mutters incomprehensible things under his breath.

As the lumbering steps coming from the forest grow further and further away, his voice rises ever so slightly, making his words more clear... he's trying to call for help; from someone, anyone that will come. This man is also afraid of what lurks outside, not trusting the shabby cabin to protect him.

The door leading into the cabin is locked, and the windows are only meant for staring inside or out, they do not move. Of course, such things can't hope to stop a smart, determined man.

In the far distance, you can pick up the sound of an old engine as it advances through the road, the pick up truck from earlier slowly making its way to the toll booth. You can estimate that it'll be on the other side within... a single round, give or take, whatever that unit of measuring might be.

What do you do?

kazimir presed himself against the wall of the cabin eyeing what he could around him to see if anybody, or anything, saw him. so far teh coast seemed clear and he was quick to turn and peek in through the windows that surrounded the building. from inside it looked pretty dilapidated save for the man tied to a chair in the middle of the room. kazimir remembered that this was supposed to be all a simulation of some kind of military operation but he didn't think they would go so far as to have prisoners or hostages of sorts here as well.

it was a nice touch and trigged his hero complex as he stuffed itty bitty into the collar of his shirt and moved away from the wall. with a few steps forward he quickly turned around and ran back towards the cabin and bring his arms up to brace himself and jumps through one of the windows of the room and comes to a skidding halt along the floor. "don't...worry...i am...here...ow." the blonde groaned as he slowly picked himself up and made his way over to the man and walked around him to get a better grasp on the bindings and fiddled with them to loosen them up. "what ya in for buddy? traitor to the cause? know too much? jeez these guys sure know how to tie a knot don't they..."

tldr;
- kazimir JUMPS THROUGH THE WINDOW INTO THE CABIN
- kazimir HELPS UNDO THE MAN'S BINDINGS AND QUESTIONS HIM

ROUND 4

With a deft leap you throw yourself through the cracked window , your large, well sculpted muscles offering you a measure of protection against impact as you land inside the shack's wooden floors, pieces of glass panels spread near the window cracking audibly as you skid to a stop.

The kidnapped man's gaze immediately snapped up upon seeing your shadow land nearby, your voice somehow making him only more alert.

"Shhh!" The man hisses lowly, looking around wearily, obviously afraid. Your questions do not go unheard, however, the man replying in a low voice as you try to work the knots. "Tried to feed the Leader poison."

Now that you are close, you realize he's legs are in a cast- both of them. You realize he's not capable of walking.

"Are you 'the' operative?" He says in another whisper. He's really in character; he might have offered to do this job- he's quite the dedicated actor. "You are almost there... Just north from here-!"

THUD!

The man's face paled, his words dying in his throat.

"... Oh no."

THUD THUD THUD THUD!

CRACK!

The western wall of the shack came flying in pieces at both of you as soon as you heard a thunderous crack, sending you and the still seated kidnapee to the floor as a large, furry figure stood by the hole.

The moon cast a long shadow over the large pokemon as it huffed and puffed, its large claws gleaming menacingly... before it charged at you!

SUDDEN CHOICE

These choices DO NOT consume ACTION ECONOMY

An Ursaring is charging you!

  • Lose a pokemon but survive, and roll to keep the kidnapee. [Choose 1 pokemon, roll dice above 50 to keep Kidnapee.]

"yeah! don't worry we'll get ya loose and then-" all he really heard was that north was the direction to go when the wall was brought down and an ursarang came through. kaz could feel the blood drain from his body as he quickly reached for that thing he got at the start of this challenge and started to drag the other man with him. "oh...arceus damn it, hold on tight!"

he grabs the pokedoll and tosses it at the ursarang as he heaves the man up and out the window he came in through and jumps out after him and pulls him away from the cabin and quickly undoes the bindings on him with the help of his joltik chewing through them. "ok! i think that outta do it, ya said north right? got it. hey don't let them other guards catch ya alright, maybe lead that bear to them if its still around, that'd outta be funny!" with that he gave the man a pat on the back and scrambled to his feet racing off towards the north, giving a thumbs up as he ran.

tldr;

ROUND 5

The pokedoll hits the Ursaring in the face, bouncing off and over it and rolling off the length of its back. For whatever reason, the large pokemon almost immediately doubled back for the doll shortly after, its ursine paws crushing wooden floors under their weight as it launched itself back.

Following that, your joltik manages to free the kidnapee from his bindings and cast. The man woobles on his feet, leaning against your strong frame to remain standing.

"G- good job!" He says, giving you a thumbs up, before looking back east. "Now quickly, I think if we can-"

His words are interrupted by your own. The man's jaw slacks slightly as you jet north.

"W- wait, that's not- there's a wall-!" He begins to say, before you athletically manage to haul yourself up and above the tall wall.

"But..." Crack. "Damn it."

CRASH!

You think you can hear another wall coming down faintly as you land on the other side of the wall deftly, but it might just be your imagination.

You land in a pack of bushes, the rustling of which makes a very nearby guard glance your way sharply. The man stares for a moment, narrowing his eyes before turning his gaze forward once more.

Beyond him, you can see another guard in the distance, and far beyond him, you can see a large, two floored warehouse with a flag at the top, flapping dramatically.

However, more important than that... despite the guard's gaze not looking at the bushes... his hand is slowly inching towards his belt, were a pokeball can clearly be seen.

What do you do?

OPERATION KAZIMIR

Map of the Installations.

STATUS REPORT

-You've consumed your smoke bomb/pokedoll. Ursaring has been escaped.
-You have freed the kidnapee.
-You have left the kidnapee.
-You have jumped over a wall and landed on some bushes.
-A guard heard you, but didn't see you. He's uncertain.
-He's subtly reaching for a pokeball.

For example, If it doesn't have incredible speed, or a move of considerable range, then attacking a far away enemy is either impossible or of exceedingly high risk/difficulty. If the player is not entirely certain of whether an action would or wouldn't cost a pokemon, feel free to ask the Leader directly.

"that...doesn't sound good...whoa!" as he heard the breaking down of a wall and remembered that he left a very angry bear and a man all by himself he was for sure going to get some points taken off of that. so much for being a hero. still before he could even lament his problems he found himself falling into a bush that cushioned his fall but also put him next to a guard as he could see the shape of a man walking around through all the bramble. he could also see him with a hand close to his belt.

in his mind kazimir cursed himself as he realized he was in between a rock and a hard place. then he felt the poking of itty bitty's feet and looked at the joltik sitting on his chest pointing out towards the guard. it seemed like it had a plan, and a risky one at that. well risk was their middle name after all, itty risky bitty, so kazimir nodded in agreement as he grabbed his joltik and lowered it to the ground to let it put its plan into action.

the small little spider shook a few of the branches around it before making itself stumble out of the bush and into the line of sight of the guard before slumping to the floor. it let out a (fake) weak cry and slowly raised its arm before having it fall flatly against the ground. here was hoping that its playing dead act was oscar worthy as kazimir watched from the bushes, wishing he had a bit of popcorn before readjusting himself and hoping that the guard took the bait as he quickly jumped out of the bushes and threw himself at the guard to try and wrap and arm around his neck and drag him back into their bush.

tldr;
- kazimir sends out joltik to act as a DECOY!
- kazimir jumps out to choke out the guard and pull him back in the bush!

ROUND 6

Pop!

Your poor Joltik is splashed with a red paintball, leaving it in a wet splotch of paint.

Itty Bitty the Joltik has died.

But its Emmy-worthy performance held true, and for a moment, the guard's bored expression slowly shifted to one of worry as the bug remained still as a statue.

Finally, he looked around wearily, before tentatively approaching the spider on the floor, moving to prod it gently with the muzzle of his paint gun.

And that's when he got snagged up by your large, powerful arms and dragged into the bushes. The man was quick to tap out as you did, slapping your arm and the floor twice to signal his defeat before promptly pretend limp, letting you more or less handle and hide away his body as you chose.

Once that was done...

The largest warehouse still remains in the distance, directly north of where you stand. A single guard is standing there.

You've got the feeling the guy you freed is not gonna be avoiding detection or capture (from either the local guards OR his ursine friend...) for long.

What do you do?

OPERATION KAZIMIR

Map of the Installations.

STATUS REPORT

-Itty Bitty falls in the line of duty, but manages to steal the guard's attention away with an award winning performance.
-You make him tap out with a choke hold.
-Coast is clear, but based off your memory, you are guessing it won't be long now before the guy you freed gets seen and/or caught.
-What do you do?

"don't worry buddy...yo u will be avenged." he whispered to the "corpse" of his fallen comrade as he returned him to his pokeball. it was risk that the both of them knew that might happen but they still weren't prepared for it. at least they managed to take down one guard out of many in this huge place, that was a victory even if it was a small one. the shadow of the large building up ahead loomed over him and kazimir was ready to sprint forward when he remembered something.

there was still an ursarang about, and it was probably chasing after someone he helped. he took a glance back at the wall behind him, the one he climbed over, and then looked back towards the building. his goal was right there, right in front of him. and yet...he couldn't just let a guy behind to deal with a wild pokemon, could he? it was probably the best distraction he could hope for, and would get some attention from the guards off of his back. "some hero i turn out to be huh..."

with that he looked back at the guard he managed to subdue and suddenly wrestled off the guy's clothes to put on himself, hoping that despite the tight fit of them he looked like just another guy put out here to keep guard. "sorry, gotta borrow this for a bit!" he whispered before dashing off...in the direction east of him where he remembered that there must be another guard that would run into the ursarang and the freed captive sooner or later.

tldr;
- kazimir takes the subdued guards clothes to DISGUISE HIMSELF AS A GUARD!
- kazimir MOVES 2 SPACES TO THE LEFT!

ROUND 7

You somehow manage to fit yourself in the guards uniform.

It's, uh... A tight fit, and the guard is none too pleased to be naked in a shrub, but silver lining! Your ass has never looked better. The uniform truly makes the man.

Properly disguised as you were, there was (hopefully) no need to remain hidden as you made your way through the base. You quickly advance East, and before long, you arrive at a guarded entrance leading into the Forest area you had just recently leapt out of.

Even before you can see it though, you can hear the shouts and roars. You arrive to find the man you freed running in large circles near the entrance to the forest area, arms swinging wide as he's chased stubbornly by the Ursaring, who seems damn near determined to... you aren't sure, either make a meal out of him or show him its scratched tree bark collection.

The guard seems... entirely distracted by the sight, laughing his ass off at his co-worker- er, kidnapee being chased around by his own Ursaring- I mean, the guard Ursaring.

They are all not really paying attention to you, fortunately.

What do you do?

OPERATION KAZIMIR

Map of the Installations.

STATUS REPORT

-You equipped the Guard's Uniform! You can now walk through guard's line of sights, but don't linger in them; if they stare for too long they'll see through the ruse. You don't have to worry about stealth as much, so you can now move 3 squares per Move.
-You move 2 squares east, and find the kidnapee victim running in circles with the Ursaring in tow, and the guard laughing. They have not noticed you.

the suit chaffed but it fits snug as a bug in a rug, so at least it might actually disguise him pretty well as he ran in the direction of the one guard in front of the forest. sure enough as soon as he reached the entrance to the wooded area he was greeted by a sight that made his stomach churn a little bit. there was the kidnapee being chased around by an ursarang while the guard was busy laughing at him, not aware of kaz coming up behind him.

kazimir reached down for the gun he was allotted for this challenge and made sure that it was primed and ready. he was planning on saving it for the boss of this challenge but it was times like these that called for some drastic measures. as he slowly approached the guard he also removed a pokeball from his belt and placed the gun against the back of the guard as he came up. "your dead~"

BANG!

red splattered over their clothes as he tossed a ball into the air and out came his volcanra flapping its wings free of small embers. "soleil, up ahead there's an ursarang, go deal with it with a hurricane ok?!" with that the volcanra flew ahead of him towards the sound of the ursarang and flapped its wings wildly, causing a great hurricane to pick up and sweep away anything that was caught in its path.

tldr;
- kazimir SHOOTS the guard laughing at the kidnapee!
- kazimir sends out volcanra!
- volcanra uses HURRICANE on the rampaging ursarang!

ROUND 8

Pop!

The guard flinches for a moment, chocking out a laugh before reaching out behind himself, noting the red paint before promptly flopping to the floor, remembering his role.

A powerful hurricane whips through the area as the Volcarona unleashes the devastating winds all over the forest. The winds smash into the Ursaring, taking it off its feet and giving the poor, tired kidnapee a chance to rest, the man latching onto a nearby tree.

The Ursaring, however, is not out of the fight just yet, its attention now squarely on your Volcarona. With a furious below, the bear's powerful arms smash into the floor, before it launches itself towards the bug, flying through the air with both arms rearning back wide.

A powerful boom rocks the night as the Volcarona empowers its hurricane further to meet the Ursaring's attack, generating a powerful shockwave.

In the aftermath, you find the Ursaring unconscious at the top of a tree.

And your Volcarona face down on the dirt near your feet.

Soleil has died!

"Y- you... came back for me..." You hear the kidnapee say as he approaches you, the winds calm now that Soleil is no more. He pants, looking down at your 'dead' pokemon with a grave expression. "I am so sorry."

Man, he's truly in character here.

The man looks upon his watch, his brow furrowing.

"You are running out of time- you'll not make it to the leader's base, at this rate." He said, cupping his chin as if in thought for a moment. "Well... I was saving these for myself, though I didn't have the time put 'em on while running... And it doesn't seem like I'll need it anymore."

After another second of thinking, he finally nodded, before reaching into his bag, producing an item for you.

"Here... These are for saving me. I hope it helps you on your mission!" The man said, turning away. "I'll make my way to the sneak hole! I wish you the best!"

You have obtained 1x Running shoes!

Running Shoes: Special Shoes that can temporarily bolster speed when activated. Move action can now cover up to 3 Squares, but the shoes are feeble and tear swiftly. [2 'Move' Actions]

REMINDER that all movement not directly in front of a guard is considered stealthy!

What do you do?

OPERATION KAZIMIR

Map of the Installations.

STATUS REPORT

-You managed to take out one of the guards. You've only one bullet left.
-Volcarona took out the Ursaring. Volcarona has died.
-You saved the kidnapee! He gave you 1x running shoes as a reward!
