Ten.

That was about the number of badges that Katherine needed to collect in order to catch up to kyle lopez . Of course, pursuing such a goal had nothing to do with the champion’s rank - for she had no desire to challenge him for it - but she still wanted to be his equal, in a sense. She was rather dismissive of both Thomas and Stormy, both of her colleagues, who seemingly weren’t in whatever made-up competition the woman made for herself.

Nowadays, disregarding people that were deemed inferior to her came as second nature.

All of this brings Katherine to the doorstep of Melody Miro ’s gym, the first of the many gyms she intended to conquer.

Removing the dark pair of sunglasses she wore, a smile was offered to the receptionist before she handed them her ID, “I believe I have a challenge scheduled for today.”

Ah yes! Another bullet hell challenge! It seemed to be quite popular among challenges despite it's difficulty, however she had quite the special guest attending her challenge today. A Katherine Fairburne , she was a former gym leader now turned into the newest elite 4 member so she had quite the shows to fill huh? Melody was riddled with worry however, she saw the recent media "incident" with Selena Desmarais and the challenger and wondered if that's all there was to her. Surely not!

At the lobby where katherine was waiting, The attendant would ask Katherine for her I.D and once given will usher her over to the main area of the gym after walking down a long hallway. Once she passed the hallway there would be a large open area that serves as the concert hall for her gym where she had her performances, all around her were empty stands where people could sit to watch her performances and battles. The four corners of the gym had holes in the floor open to the ocean for her water pokemon to come in and out of as well. Melody would be sitting on the stage scrolling through her phone as she looked up to realize her challenger was here!

She waved to her and shouted from the other end of the room "Welcome to my gym!" as an energetic wave accompanied the greeting. She stood up and put her phone away as she placed her hands behind her back as she started her usual introduction "Please let out your Pokémon so I can select my team around them!" she said as she awaited to see what kind of Pokémon she chose for the challenge. She totally didn't forget to look at the application before hand, nope, no siree.

With such a dry, cold tone, one would think that this compliment was all part of some charade and that Katherine didn’t actually like the appearance of the gym. In truth, it didn’t speak to her - but it wasn’t the worst either. That much was already promising, wasn’t it?

“Oh, yes. Of course.”

It was quite unusual for her to need a full team for a gym challenge, but it was refreshing enough that she couldn’t resist temptation and had to choose that challenge. Traditional ones were usually her favorites, yes, but it was about time she changed that habit.

In rapid succession, each of her pokemon is released.

Belladona. Reaper. Ruby. Dazzle. Emma. Radiance.

"Thank you!" the tone was completely lost on melody as the thought hadn't even registered in her heard that it could be taken such a way. She tried to see the best in everyone to a fault and made her too trusting. Melody gave a small smile as katherine released her team of pokemon "Ohhhh interesting! I can tell you've taken really good care of your pokemon! Good!" she said complimenting katherine in return.

Melody then chose her own team as she turned on her mic's headset and called to them. "Missy, Boom, baile, sensu, chatty, and toxi!" she said as it took a few moments for her pokemon to all appear. The bird pokemon all flew in from the upper area of the arena as they made it their little nest, toxtricity and rillaboom appeared from behind the stage and mismagius sorta just manifested behind melody. "Alright im already to go, just as a refresher pretty much anything you can think of works as long as my pokemon or myself arent injured as a result, try not to damage the gym too much either. You just need to survive until the music stops, ready?" she said waiting for katherine to respond before she raised her hands up in the air and snapped her fingers and the lights came on and the music began and her pokemon began their assault. "Go!"

Both oricorios fired an air slash at shedinja in an attempt to take care of the pokemon quickly.

Toxtricity used sludge bomb and aimed it towards hatterene

Rilaboom fired a drum beating towards starmie

lastly Chatot fired a hyper voice at blissey

“Begin.”

Their tactic was simple and fluid. No pokemon needed to stand about and loaf around, they all had orders and commands to follow. After all, for a challenge as specific as this, Katherine made some time to prepare them and think of a tactic before scheduling her challenge.

A SPOTLIGHT shines from above, Ruby the Starmie guiding it to illuminate Shedinja with its light. It was the main actor of this play, and it deserved the focus. Each and every attack is diverted to the ghost-type instead of their intended targets. Melody’s pokemon would find the oddity to be too alluring and fascinating to brush off.

In the meantime, Hatterene sprinkles her MAGIC POWDER on the pokemon, causing its typing to change into Psychic instead. Thanks to Shedinja’s ability, that means that all the attacks it sustains deal no damage to it - leaving it invulnerable at this stage.

Blissey sets up a LIGHT SCREEN, whereas Belladona the Scolipede armors herself with an IRON DEFENSE.

notes: spotlight on shedinja to cause the attacks to target it instead. magic powder turns shedinja into a psychic-type, meaning that it takes no damage thanks to its wonder guard ability. blissey uses light screen whereas scolipede uses iron defense to prepare herself for the next stage. speed boost is also in play, passively increasing scolipede's speed.

Melody was impressed with Katherine's tactic's there was no doubt in her mind that she would have came prepared for most situations like this. However she did seem to be lacking so far in the showing their relationship as trainer and Pokémon, no matter! The show was just starting! Melody clapped for Katherine "Very smart! Shedinja's are quite common in this challenge so far, also a nuisance. But I've developed strategies around them!" she said as she flung out her hand and her Pokémon got excited as it was now their time to shine.

"Rilaboom! Taunt that starmie! Chatot mimic Magic powder!" As she obviously couldn't let Katherine steal her spotlight! Rilaboom began to yell obscenities at Starmie applying the taunt to the Starmie to prevent further as Chatot sat on it's head mimicking Hatterene using magic powder and using it on itself to change it's typing to psychic

Then melody began her assault "Alright baba, Sese! Air slash! Mismagius shadow ball! Toxtricity! overdrive! and Lastly Chatot use synchronoise! Rila drum beating go go!" Her pokemon let out a ferocious cheer and she let one out alongside them! Her pokemon followed their orders dutifully, how would katherine fairburne react to them now? Melody was eager to see katherine in action.

The taunt sets her team back, no longer allowing them to fall back on a basic tactic. She had hoped for that, at the very least. It was good to know that Melody's gym wasn't all looks and no talent.

”Reaper, SHADOW BALL. Deal with the birds, Starmie.”

Katherine's own ghost-type unleashes a wave of spectral, shadowy orbs that aim to collide with those that belonged to Mismagius. The music continues to boom and echo within the arena just as the woman's Starmie wills forth a mighty wave of SURF to drown out the AIR SLASHES.

Belladone strengthens herself with another IRON DEFENSE in preparation of the DRUM BEATING, allowing the vine whips to lash against her. She uses her already reinforced body to protect the others from the assault as the shockwave of SYNCHRONOISE is emitted.

Her team’s already set up LIGHT SCREEN decreases the effectiveness of the move, but the heavy downpour that comes from a combined LIFE DEW of both Hatterene and Blissey negates the damage entirely.

”Don’t let up. Continue.”

notes: reaper uses shadow ball to cancel out the other shadow ball. starmie uses surf n swallows the air strikes with the wave. belladone uses iron defense before tanking the drum beating. the synchronoise goes through the team's light screen before a doubled life dew rains from above, healing each of kat's pokemon.

Good, her Pokémon were able to adjust on fly with just a simple command. She gave more thorough instructions that her Pokémon obeyed to the T but she still lacked any feeling of warmth from it, troubling... Maybe she was just not the type of person to do such a thing? Maybe she just had to turn up the heat then? Very well. "Alright you guys! Let's play an elegy! Go!" She tells them as they all let out a small cheer and focus in on one target with their moves. Let's see how she handled some focus fire! She called out her next set of moves

"Magic powder! Hex! Mirror move! Knock off! Revelation dance! Phantom force! " she calls out as it seemed all of those attacks were aimed right at Katherine's Blissey! The range attacks fly out first as Mismagius vanishes from sight and then tries to strike at the Blissey from behind who should have psychic typing now.

”Radiance, Belladona. Together.”

Sparing not a single word more than necessary, Katherine commands the pair to operate as one unit. Radiance takes that as a sign to issue a HELPING HAND that enhances Belladona’s PROTECT, erecting a large barrier around the group. It’s maintained long enough to protect against each and every one of the gym leader’s moves, except for the PHANTOM FORCE.

It easily goes through Katherine’s defenses and Mismagius manages to land a hit on the now newly-transformed Psychic-type Blissey. The super-effective move deals quite a hit, but a LIFE DEW that the woman's Hatterene calls upon heals some of the damage sustained by the Blissey.

Tick, tock.

The clock continues to tick.

notes: blissey uses HELPING HAND to aid scolipede and enhance its PROTECT. they defend against all moves except for the MAGIC POWDER that transforms blissey into a psychic-type and the PHANTOM FORCE that mismagius casts. blissey sustains the damage from the ghost-type attack before hatterene uses LIFE DEW.

Oh? Very clever set of moves again. She really thought about this strategy huh? But what would happen if melody threw a total wrench in the plans instead? She'd have to do something really ridiculous to try and throw katherine off right? Very well then! "Mismagius phantom force, and get out of there, everyone else sorry for this but let's go for Appregio." [break][break]

She tells them as Toxtricity preps a protect and mismagius vanished again with phantom force. That's when baba and Sensu both began to dance in duo, using the move Teeter dance to confuse everyone and throw the whole concert into a tizzy. Baba went first so by the time that Sensu went there would've been a significant delay for a second round of teeter dancing during which baba fires a mirror move from copying Mismagius and vanished into shadows. [break][break]

Toxtricity and Mismagius however were fine since they blocked it with their own way of dodging. "Now. Everyone Rondo!" she ordered meaning they were going to use primarily sound attacks and hope they'd land. Overdrive, round, boom burst chatter for more confusion chances and lastly oricorio would try to use revelation dance on Blissey.

Mismagius used shadow force, baile oricorio used teeter dance and then mirror moved mismagius to vanish with shadow force as well during sensu oricorio's follow up teeter dance because of dancer to avoid confusion[break][break]

The song must have been nearing its end by now.

The longer this battle continued Katherine's odds at winning Melody’s badge grew. Her pokemon, despite having sustained some damage, were mostly recovered thanks to the effects of not one but several healing moves.

Her Scolipede had been ramping up both its speed and natural defense.

Losing now would be embarrassing, wouldn’t it?

Melody’s pokemon begin to move, sway and dance to the beat of the music, inflicting the confusion status effect upon each of the elite four member’s own pokemon. Unfortunately, that too comes at a cost.

She waits for her opponent’s pokemon to reappear before yelling out her own command.

“You too, Radiance.”

Confusion or not, she expects her pokemon to press on and deliver when asked to perform. The Blissey, a true COPYCAT, attempts to mimic the TEETER DANCE and dance to the beat of someone else’s drum.

“The rest of you, heal up.”

Once again, Hatterene will attempt to conjure a healing rain to pour from above, as the Starmie seeks to REFRESH itself and the Scolipede utilizes its IRON DEFENSE.

notes: blissey uses copycat on teeter dance. it's used just as melody's own pokemon reappear and the protect is lowered. starmie uses refresh, hatterene life dew and scolipede iron defense. rolling four times.

The song WAS indeed ending soon and Katherine managed to hold up really well against Melody's onslaught of attacks. The gap between the two was widening with each moment that passed as the speed boosts and defenses her pokemon continued to build up. She paused for a moment after as all of the pokemon at this point were confused and thought about doing something a little different instead.[break][break]

"Stop!" she calls out as all her pokemon looked around as their eyes still swirling wildly "Looks like they cant continue like this haha. I went a bit too far. Katherine, you did stellar during your battle. But do you mind if we have a bit of a conversation?" she asked as a tsareena walked out and released an Aromatherapy surrounding all the pokemon and curing them of their confusion. [break][break]

She moved towards the front of the stage and sat down before her "Now your strategy was practically flawless during our battle as I expected it to be. But I wanted to just ask you a few questions. Do you love your Pokémon?" she asked "Do they love you?"

The AROMATHERAPY, along with Melody's own words, bring a sweet conclusion to the battle. Katherine would've liked to believe that she was the victor, but it didn't feel like there was a loser.

“Not at all. I figured you'd want to know about why I brought these specific pokemon—” Or, well, that’s what she had imagined. In reality, Melody had something else to ask - something far more… Relevant?

Well, depending on who you’re asking, really.

“I love some of them,” she admits, not shy to hide the fact that others were deemed to be tools. Ultra Beasts could not be loved. They were weapons, and she would continue to treat them as such.

“And I am sure some of them love me too. The rest probably just appreciate what I give them, and the others…”

They can’t leave, she almost says.

“I suppose there must be something that keeps them with me.”

"I see." she says as she places a finger under her lips and seemingly starts to think. Hmm this was a pretty difficult situation to think about.
