Emma is drawn by the smell of food, however does not indulge. Rather, the woman makes her way idly through the dining hall without any real sense of direction. She glances at people along the way without really settling on one person in particular.[break][break]

It is only when she spots a face in the crowd, bloodied, bruised and broken, that she stops.[break][break]

Her heels draw to a soft click as she pauses. The urge to interfere is an odd one, and yet she does so anyway. Emma waits a moment longer, studying the girl from afar. Whatever interactions she makes with her peers would help her to dictate in some capacity the way she'd approach.[break][break]

But the result would ultimately be that she approaches the girl anyway.[break][break]

It is somehow less of a command and more of a request. Emma inclines her head subtly, inviting her to join her for a moment.[break][break]

Every time someone floats too close, every time someone bumps into her in line, every "oop" and "watch it" and "excuse me" it's making her sick she wants to -- no. She stops whatever train of thought she was hurtling down.

It's not their fault that she didn't get any sleep last night. Not their fault she couldn't sleep last night. That she had to spend all night washing out her mouth and icing her face and fucking pressing at bruises because if she falls asleep she might . . .

She breathes hard through her nose. Every thought keeps getting away from her she needs to . . . needs to focus on one thing at a time. Her chicken fingers. She needs to eat those, she needs to find a table, she needs to --

"Vela."

The clicking of heels is lost to the sound of an opening door and Plank almost jumps out of her skin. Her tray jumps with her. She loses a couple of chicken fingers to the floor.

Great, just fucking great!

All that self-control she'd been trying to exercise melts away in seconds.

"Yeah, and who the fuck are you?" she growls and whips around to see who's calling her name today, eyes (bruised from abuse and sorely missed sleep) narrowed and teeth bared.

Emma's eyes slant to the ground, focusing momentarily on the dropped chicken strips. They linger a moment before drawing up slowly to meet the defensive, enraged gaze of the girl. It brings her back, vividly, to an unwelcome memory of herself in Plank's position. But it hadn't been here, and it hadn't been chicken strips.[break][break]

With a forced inhale, the memory is drowned and she narrowed her own eyes at the teenager and her misplaced anger.[break][break]

"Not the person who hurt you, that's who."[break][break]

Her voice is cool and even, without a note of frustration. She states this matter-of-factly, all while noting the pattern of bruising, the swollen skin. [break][break]

"We can go someplace quiet to talk, if you'd be more comfortable."[break][break]

She waits if only because she has no intention yet of letting the girl go. Dread trickles down her spine, uninviting. [break][break]

".. and I'll replace your food- though I'd recommend something easier to manage that won't cause you pain. Like soup."[break][break]

The woman's words (meant to comfort, to soothe) do nothing for her. She's sick of taking people at their word when they say they don't want to hurt her. The promise of a quiet place to talk hits her frayed nerves like a trap. A tactic to get her defenses down. Plank's first instinct is to tell the woman this place would be plenty quieter without her pestering.

But then again, what the hell. This place is too loud and she's too fucking tired to fight with people right now.

"What the fuck does my comfort matter," she mumbles and tosses her tray onto a counter. What food was left on it shifts and splatters about. Despite the petulant comment, she crinkles her nose at the mention of soup -- and then screws up her eyes and lets out an irritated groan when it sends shocks through her face and up to her brain.

She eats enough soup at home. The only plus to being on this shitty sub is that she can get some real food.

"Eatin' anythin' hurts," she says, "I might as well like what I'm eatin'."

Though she does not express surprise, she is. She shouldn't be, but there had been a reason she had spotted Plank amongst the rest, been drawn to her injuries. This was Rocket. People got hurt all the time, the grunts put through gruelling combat training. But this-- the severity of her bruising, the mutterings around headquarters.[break][break]

And now her subtle admission.[break][break]

"Hmm."[break][break]

She doesn't press the issue, but she holds fast. And it does not surprise her in the slightest that her half-hearted attempt to comfort the girl is rejected. She can see in the way Plank squares her shoulders and sets her feet apart that she is an unforgiving woman. [break][break]

It reminds her of herself.[break][break]

"With an attitude like that, I suppose you assume it doesn't."[break][break]

The tray clatters onto the counter, noisy and depicting clearly just how upset she is. Emma breathes in through her nose slowly, patience waning ever so slightly. However, Plank's following response is encouraging if only because it means she's listening.[break][break]

"How do you expect it to heal, then, if you keep pushing it?"[break][break]

"Figure if my comfort mattered," she starts, wincing through the words as if to prove a point (she's not, talking is just a fucking nightmare right now), "I'd be able t' eat solid food without, without chewin' like a Mudsdale."

If Plank notices the woman's building frustration she doesn't let it show. Shoves her hands in her pockets and sucks at the bloody spit pooled in her mouth. She probably shouldn't be so animated when her mouth is full of half-healed cuts. This realization doesn't stop her from dismissing the woman's reasonable comment out of hand.

"Pushin' it's never stopped me from healin' before," she says, shrugging, "not when I was a kid 'n' I'd bet not this time neither."

The way she phrases it, however, is less a question of what occurred as that part should be obvious to anyone, and more a question of who happened. Whether or not Plank sees through it isn't important. In fact, Emma doesn't count on the girl giving her a straight answer at all.[break][break]

She already knows who did this to her, the question was why.[break][break]

Emma's eyes harden as her thoughts run rampant. Her attention remains fixated on Plank's eyes, seeing not the damage but the expression behind it. She had never been good at people, but she had picked up a thing or two about reading them. Despite how hot Plank's blood ran and how on the sleeve she expressed her emotions it wasn't real.[break][break]

Emma's chin drops in response to Plank's retort. Forced bravery and bravado, if one could call it that, oozes from the girl without end.[break][break]

"I know."[break][break]

"Listen, if I'm gonna be interrogated for the second --" she bites down on a flash of pain mid-sentence, takes a beat to find words that will hurt less coming out, "Just take me t' this quiet room or whatever first."

To be honest Plank doesn't want to talk about yesterday no matter what the setting. Not when she's still hurting and struggling to keep her thoughts properly sorted and so, so fucking tired; but if she's going to have to get into it she'd rather do it somewhere with less eyes and ears curiously aimed in her direction.

Rocket could be cruel, she knew, but there is a distinct tug of guilt when she watches Plank's suffering. All of her training and her conditioning had turned her cold. But right here, that cold front faltered. [break][break]

Rocket had promised a white world, without pain, without suffering.[break][break]

Rocket had promised to be better.[break][break]

But what she saw right in front of her was not better- it was merely the same. It was the same cruelty, the same savagery, the same desperate attempt at control. Only the weak lashed out in this way, in a desperate attempt to regain control. [break][break]

"No rooms."[break][break]

Just someplace unused, without all of the prying eyes and open ears. Not that what she had to say warranted any secrecy - but there was some sort of secret already being passed aboard the submarine. One she wasn't privy to.[break][break]

Emma leads the pair of them towards the courtyard, slowing her pace not to accommodate for Vela, but because she appears to be lost in thought. Her attention occasionally flits to the ceiling and the various vent coverings and openings, but they always return to Plank before staring straight ahead.[break][break]

People pass them by without a second thought, too intimidated to meet Emma's gaze and therefore rendering Plank invisible.[break][break]

"Did Theo do this to you, Vela?"[break][break]

[attr="class","sunshine"]No rooms. On the upside, that probably means a relatively open space. On the downside, that still means people can pass by chance. Plank is blind to the woman's status. She's not blind, she can see the way people give them space, but she doesn't know the amount of security she's stumbled into.

It's fortunate, but in ignorance you can find no comfort.

"Fuckin' hell, would it kill 'em to put in moving floors or something," she mumbles as they make their way to the courtyard. The size of the submarine is impressive, but it means long hallways; and right now with the way her raw ankles chafe against their bandages hallways are some real shit.

The people who pass by on their way and the few who share the space with them -- however momentarily -- find that if they overcome the woman's intimidating aura and sneak a peek at Plank that she's more than happy to put up with some pain and bare her teeth. Thrust her chest forward in a challenge that seems out of place on a girl so small.

"Theo?" she asks when their conversation finally picks up again, "Dunno, his name didn't come up. Dunno if I could even blame him. Pretty clear he had some instructions."

It doesn't occur to her that the girl doesn't know who she is. Frankly, she doesn't care. If she did, she was bold and perhaps a little stupid to be so hostile. If she didn't, she was bold and brave, and probably still a little stupid. It made little difference in the end, and Emma wasn't present here with her to flex her authority. [break][break]

The woman side-eyes Plank, and although the note of amusement she feels would normally prompt a slight smile, Emma's face is expressionless and flat. One might call it 'resting bitch face' for the kids that were hip. She was not hip, she was simply unfriendly.[break][break]

"Hmm."[break][break]

People pass them by but, for the most part even given the cramped quarters of the hallway, manage to give them a wide enough berth. It even appears that for some people, they're more intimidated by the teenager than they are by their admin. [break][break]

However, once they come to a halt next to a plant that looks distinctly like a weed. She idly tugs at the fronds, listening as Plank answers the question. Her agitation is measured in the way her hand slips, plucking a frond off with some sense of force. She hesitates, gathering herself.[break][break]

Her ankles are already thanking her for their break and the way the cool sub wall's chill seeps through her clothes and settles against the bruises on her back . . . heavenly.

Like all good things in life, though, this relief is not built to last.

"From who," she echoes the question and instantly raw emotion starts bubbling to the surface. Anger, bitterness, betrayal. She bends her legs and pulls her knees to her chest. Rests her chin in the space between them and glares at the floor while her fingers play with her socks, flashing dirty bandages hidden just beneath. Her sweater's sleeves ride up, revealing similarly stained bandages wrapped around her wrists.

Gavin.

His name sticks in Plank's throat. It wasn't that long ago that she first learned it, and already it feels like a forbidden word. A place she cannot go.

"An underboss," she says instead, her words muffled by the fabric of her shorts, "just sat back 'n' enjoyed the show."

Emma's attention does not follow her where she chooses to sit. She assumed the girl would seek out a place to rest and she didn't fault her, mostly. [break][break]

It was a sign of weakness, one that in her youth she would never have expressed in the presence of another, let alone a superior. But Plank was not herself, she realized- and in that respect, she finds some sort of twisted sense of comfort or relief. [break][break]

The raw emotion, however, catches her by surprise. This was different than the frustration from earlier, the defensiveness she'd exhibited to keep herself self. This was heartbreaking if Emma were ever capable of feeling it anymore.[break][break]

She sees something flash behind Plank's eyes, though it isn't all that difficult to detect given the way the girl tucks herself into something similar to a fetal position. Her attention shifts slowly over the girl, noting the dirty bandages. Were they self-applied? Had she even been to the medical bay?[break][break]

Emma's eyes flash back with ferocity, however, at the mention of an underboss. Plank doesn't name one out loud, but dread rises in her chest immediately. She exhales slowly, choosing to remain even, unreadable. The intention wasn't to intimidate the girl or scare her, and it wasn't to express any sort of ill-will towards her counterparts either. But it takes a great deal of strength to not react outwardly.[break][break]

[attr="class","sunshine"]The bark of laughter from Plank is short. Mean. Takes her back to the room where she'd collected all these cuts and scrapes and bruises. When she laughed at Gavin for telling her she had a concussion. It's the same kind of bitter humor that inspires them both.

"Yeah, pretty sure," she stops fiddling with her socks to cross her arms over her knees, "been on a few missions with him."

Was recruited by him. Killed a man at his direction (no, that's not fair, she did that herself). Thought she was becoming something for him. Thought maybe he'd cared at least a little bit about -- no. She's doing it again. Her thoughts are getting away from her. This concussion . . .

"Tried t' fix up my face before I left, like the guilt was catchin' up t' him or somethin'. Stupid," she grumbles without being prompted. Mostly to herself.
