The last thing she remembers is a blurry, blood-smeared battleground. Nothing is distinct, mere shadows and shapes, indecipherable. It comes back to her in painful flashes, debilitating. [break][break]

Explosions, over, and over, and over again.[break][break]

Rotting flesh, unbound intestines, blood and bile, strewn across the ground like spilled paint. [break][break]

And there she lays among it all, among the filth, among the desecration. Beneath the life-giving tree, but she is not alive. [break][break]

She wakes to the touch of a cold nose beneath her palm. It roots, stubborn and deliberate, until her fingers slip through matted fur. Slowly, Emma's fingers twitch, a weak response to stimulation. But the being whose nose begs for attention responds by pushing harder, a tongue rasping against her skin.[break][break]

It's warm.[break][break]

Blinding hospital lights bleed through the bandages around her head, and it hurts to open her eyes. But that would be like a second skin, soon. Everything hurt.[break][break]

She is roused every half hour, a nurse nervously entering the room. Emma knew she was there only by the vibrating beast curled up at the end of her hospital bed. He keeps her feet warm. He is her protector, her tether.[break][break]

Lips peel back in warning but he allows the nurse to oversee Emma regularly. Whatever it took to keep his master alive.

The first few days were restless. Agitation, fear, pain, hunger, love. It pours out of him like a busted faucet with the water running. He lashes out, blood sprays the wall as his teeth find purchase in someone who is just trying to help.[break][break]

At some point, murmurs of putting him down had surfaced.[break][break]

"The beast is dangerous," they said. Oh if only they knew.[break][break]

But Emma, despite being delirious and in pain, held onto them with a grip worse than the Lycanroc's teeth.[break][break]

"Don't you land a fucking hand on my dog."[break][break]

And eventually, it got easier. Emma was stable, Hades relented in his blind fury, his desperation to keep her safe. He realized that the only reason she was still alive was because of them.[break][break]

Even still, he never left. He hadn't eaten since she'd been hit. Any attempts the nurses or visitors made to feed him had gone untouched. He survived on whatever rotten scraps he'd ingested in the fight. The nurses complained about how foul he smelled, how he had gotten mud, blood, and God knows what else all over the sheets.[break][break]

Nothing they could do about it though, so they eventually stopped bringing it up.[break][break]

Until Emma was safe, Hades would not rest.
