priam was taken aback by the offer. it takes him a second to recover from the recoil as the words send him to a mixture of emotions. should he be glad that he's wanted? awkward since it came out of the blue? in hysteria since it might be a joke?

unsure on how to answer, he blurts out what was the most natural for him to say in this situation. he'd been building up this character for the sole reason of appearing independent, after all.

"i'm grown up now! i don't think i need adopting!"

a dad to teach him horse riding would've been nice. elijah gardner was one of the worst teachers for it, but thank arceus that priam was just god at learning new things.

"hmm, that makes sense."

he never thought of the pros and cons before, mostly since there wasn't any point of doing so. maybe he considered it before, but conditions given to him by rocket's division on kanto did not permit such thinking back then.

"but wouldn't that make things worse for your daughters? like having a dad be a part of rocket's one thing, and another for a sibling too."

a hand rubs the back of his nape.

"i'm trying to find a roundabout way to say this, but that's a similar reason why i can't accept, uh, that."

priam starts to make hand gestures as he scrambles for words.

"like, i want to say i trust rocket to have my back, but the risks of being emotionally attached to someone in this line of work outweighs the pros. that's, like, rocket training 101! you understand, right?"

he's been taught to trust, but always leave room for doubt for his own sake, not by the higher ups per se, but by people who's also had his back since then.

priam's future was doomed, but he has already come to terms with it.

"you don't need to worry about me! i can handle myself better than anyone else!"

the message comes not out of arrogance, but from experience. if there's any citation needed to back up his claim, priam will gladly get the receipts out like dreams from the multiverse experience during the soiree.

"i should get ready for that fishing trip though!" maybe he can still rush the mall before its closing hours. "thanks for the fishie store invite!"

priam waves goodbye and gets out of the basement. the last part was too awkward that he's not sure if they can continue the talk without being awkward.
