she doesn’t think shes dressed inappropriately. her tea dress shows off a youthful bosom and ends just below her knee. its floral pattern and sheer layers match the lace white gloves that tint her hands three shades lighter. her manicure (a blue just to the left of what might be considered sea foam green) can still be seen through them if you were to look close enough.

perhaps it is a bit gloomy for her current ensemble, but she did bring an umbrella! it’s open now, as it’s just begun to rain again.

this isn’t inappropriate, it’s only just past 3pm after all.

when else does one wear an afternoon dress?

she’s confused because all these men are dressed in black. they surround her and her partner, faces expecting something she’s unaware of.

she’s confused because she doesn’t quite remember when she got here, but she’s smiling like she knows them. does she know them?

she looks at their faces, weighted heavy with sleep deprivation and work.

she wonders what that feels like.

nanette never tires.

“hi, hello. how do you do?”

and she never stresses.

she extends her hand for a greeting. the man looks uncertain, and if it weren’t for his facial hair you could see the roses on his cheeks bloom in full.

“h-how do you do,” his voice is just as uncertain as his expression.

“it’s a beautiful day, isn’t it?”

he sputters. his clothes are heavy with rain.

River is far too enamored, awkward, and dense to think about standing underneath her umbrella. On too many occasions he's caught himself straying to her perfect.. shape.. beneath that lovely floral dress of hers. It makes him blush and he awkwardly tucks his chin, averts his gaze, and displays himself as rude and uninviting- which, frankly, isn't out of character at all.[break][break]

How had he gotten stuck with her of all people? This was no place for a woman, surely, especially not on a run like this.[break][break]

But here she is, the one with the biggest pair of the two of them, standing up to three men dressed in black, smiling up at them with that blank, pretty smile. Like she knew them, like she'd just woken up from a dream, or.. Arceus, she was weird.[break][break]

And the men stare back at them both, scrutinizing, bewildered, because River's not nearly the man they expected and Nanette..[break][break]

She opens her mouth to speak, and her voice is so perfectly pretty, so natural, so easy-going and relaxed that it quite literally sends a shiver down her spine. River watches her, a stupid, blind-sided, empty stare as she extends out her hand and he catches a glimpse of her almost seafoam green polish through the thin white lace.[break][break]

her hand extends past the brim of her umbrella. droplets kiss at her palm and caress her wrist. for a moment, she's fascinated. as if she forgot how water feels, how it falls from dark sky, how it drags down slopes, but pools where it can.

only for a moment though.

"weren't we here for a reason?"

she looks to river, molten eyes cooling in the rain.

And River watches her, owl-eyed and bewildered by the awe and fascination he sees reflected in her eyes. She is childlike, staring at her hand and the raindrops beading on her glove like she's never seen anything like it before.[break][break]

What a weird lady.[break][break]

He tries to look past her hand and back to the men who seem to be just as transfixed by her weird fascination. They make eye-contact almost awkwardly, bashfully looking away from one another as if this whole situation was something inappropriate or embarassing.[break][break]

"Wha-- Nanette, are you in there? I swear I told you like four times already: we're here for a shipment of Slowbro. For the sciency-guys to look at."[break][break]

He shakes his head, exasperated, before fishing into his jacket for the wad of cash meant to be delivered to the smugglers. They take it, inching away, and River is left standing in the pouring rain, watching the woman swallow him whole.[break][break]

the men mutter along, heads nodding. they move, and so does nanette. looping her arm under his, she expects him to lead her.

isn't it just so funny? she doesn't even seem notice his rain-soaked arm wetting layers of sheer silk, cool arm pressing into warm body.

Who the hell was this girl?[break][break]

River tenses as her warm hand slips through his arm. He is acutely aware of the distinct placement of each and every one of her beautiful, porcelain-molded fingers. She might barely be holding on to him, but her closeness leaves him breathless.[break][break]

Women were trouble.[break][break]

The men shuffle off and leave just the two of them, and it takes River far longer than it should have to realize if @nanette wasn't moving, neither of them were. With a slow lurch, River exhales and pulls her along with him, an awkward, irritated blush forming behind cold cheeks.[break][break]

He doesn't even bother asking her to hold the umbrella a different way, because he'd be the one holding it in the end and that was far too much effort for him. Let the pretty girl stay dry, who the fuck cared.[break][break]

The shipment, thankfully, isn't overly large. It appears that the Slowbro are already crated and River's parked the truck out back just off the edge of the dock for easier transfer. Awkwardly, River attempts to detach from the woman, his other hand wiping back wet hair.[break][break]

"Uhh.. you just.. stay here, yeah? Wouldn't want you hurtin' yourself unnecessarily. Just have a couple of cages to move into the truck."[break][break]

River eyes her, attempting to piece together any scenario in which she does something airheaded. Like walk off the dock and drown, or something. But these men aren't too keen on moving all of these crates themselves, so he knows he has to.
