[attr="class","giada i"]the outskirts feel familiar, even after all this time. there's a certain air to them now, a feeling of nostalgia lingering in shadows of alleys. somehow, it almost makes her uncomfortable.

to combat this, she finds herself in the seediest bar in town, nestled in the corner. out of sight, out of mind. a first for giada morgan, really, but that's not the point. there's a method to her madness, a purpose to her movements.

"didya miss me?" she murmurs, finally, when the background noise has reached a comfortable level for personal conversation. blue eyes leave a half empty glass to dart toward her companion. curiosity eats away at her, masking something else she can't quite place. is it worry? care? affection? all, neither, who knows. what she does know is it's been a long time since she's had the absolute fucking honor of seeing emma in person and she's hungrily drinking her in.

"i hope so, given how close we were," a snicker follows and she's leaning forward, planting herself directly into the woman's line of sight. she's always wondered what would happen if she stayed in emma's crosshairs a moment too long. would it be as messy as she thinks?

maybe she'll find out.

Fingers drum idly against the rim of her glass, nails tapping, prompting noise from the bottom of the barrel. This is the third or fourth glass she's nursed over the course of the night, and while she can hear, can see, can smell the familiarity of the woman slipping into her peripheral, her reaction is slower.[break][break]

This is in part due to the alcohol swimming warm in her system, and because her memories as a whole are foggy and difficult to read, even harder to navigate. [break][break]

"Didya miss me?"[break][break]

"No."[break][break]

Her response spills naturally, without her sayso. Emma blinks, though her eyes are hidden behind dark sunglasses that blot out the light. Emma looks right at her, in part due to the fact that Giada has positioned herself directly in front of her.[break][break]

"Hmm."[break][break]

There is no reason for the woman to lie, surely, but Emma's head aches trying to remember. Giada is nothing but a shadow or shape in front of her thanks to her sunglasses. Emma breathes in deeply, pulling her drink closer to her.[break][break]

"Hey-- get her whatever she'd like."[break][break]

Another drink, catered to giada morgan's preference, is slid across the bar to her.

[attr="class","giada i"]no. the word stings enough for her to reach for her glass, to allow remaining alcohol to wash bitterness down her throat. it's to be expected, she knows, but in the face of such an admittance it's difficult to not feel something. the empty glass is slid away, blue eyes just barely darting to make sure it doesn't slide right off the counter. glass doesn't shatter, not yet, and she lingers on it. a way of easing herself back into a comfortable composure, maybe, or simply nothing more than her avoiding.

either way, her gaze returns once emma lets out a soft hmm.

"it's fine," she murmurs. there's a softness to it that she almost despises, mostly due to her ignorance of the situation. "the past few months have been hard." for emma, absolutely. for her? perhaps not so much. there's lapses in memory, in part due to alcohol and poor choices. the rest she chalks up to something she doesn't want to know and leaves it out in the cold to die.

the bartender ignores her and gets to work on the order emma placed. a replica of her just finished drink soon arrives and she stares at it for a moment before reaching and wrapping fingers around it like a lifeline. tonight, drinks keep both of them afloat.

"i'm sorry i wasn't here sooner," she whispers. it's barely audible against background noise but she's certain emma will hear it anyway. girl is like a bloodhound in that aspect: always acutely aware of what's happening around them. perhaps it comes with the territory, the line of work, or perhaps it's more deep-seated than that.

either way, giada is downing the glass with a sudden ferocity akin to washing away a weird taste in her mouth.

Regardless of whether Gia's discomfort is noted, Emma doesn't move or show any indication that she cares. The truth was, she did, she just didn't care for anyone getting close to her. Giada was intense, a dizzying collage of emotions and alcohol and bad decisions. A ticking time bomb of anticipation and carnal energy.[break][break]

And yet, even despite her constant, unshakable cold shoulder, the woman stays. She hovers, grasping the drink as if it is a tether. Emma glances down and into her drink, exhaling.[break][break]

The woman's first response is ignored, slightly, as Emma doesn't grace her with a verbal response. But her shoulders sink in some semblance of defeat, and she lifts her drink to her lips as if to say 'tell me about it.'[break][break]

But it is Gia's whispered apology that makes her skin flush with goosebumps and her back stiffen instinctively. She sets her jaw, letting the burn of her liquor carve a path down her throat. She focuses on it, lets it consume her.[break][break]

"And what would you have done if you had been here sooner?"

[attr="class","giada i"]ah. in hindsight, she probably should have prepared for the question presented. of course giada morgan is all impulses and blind emotion, however, and any preparation to be made is lost on her. she glides through life on feelings, on split second decisions and consequences.

this is no different. in some way, it's almost worse.

"had your back," she offers. it's not enough, that much she knows. and yet, it feels like everything. emma wolfe is a woman who needs no one but there's something that compels gia to stay. despite the cold front, despite the lack of anything, she stays rooted in place. what remains of her drink is downed and mulled over until it burns its memory into her throat.

"god," comes tumbling out of her mouth before she can stop it. there's an almost sheepish look to her, as if it doesn't quite fit on her features enough to make full sense. "could've done something more than just left you."

it's not that simple, though. it never is.

"How, exactly?"[break][break]

Her mind is foggy and at this point, she can't tell if it's the alcohol or her trauma. If she had any vision at all, it'd probably be spinning. Emma glances over at her slowly, deliberately, her gaze piercing even if there's nothing there.[break][break]

"You don't even know me."[break][break]

She barks a laugh, swirling ice cubes in her cup. They tink against the glass and Emma shakes her head, looking down into her lap.[break][break]

"It was an accident, anyway. I think."[break][break]

She's had difficulty remembering, but when she swallows, she's sure. What had happened that day hadn't been intentional- at least, not the part where she'd been blown to hell. Something had been rising out of the ground, it had been an act of fear, of desperation.[break][break]

"Am I the only reason you came back?"
