“Not far.”

Eliora turned a soft face to smile up at him, eyes pinching a little. A salty breeze drew them back out to sea as they walked along a dirt path, getting ever closer to the edge of a small cliff.

She cut off to the side, towards a clearing in brush. Her voice was easygoing with the smallest chirp while she navigated. 

“Over this way... just down the rocks, and then we’re there!”

They descended down uneven layers of rock, hidden partially by tall grass and dunes. She looked back, having gone up ahead a few paces.

“Mhm.”

Something glinted in the sand and she bent to pick it up as they walked, not immediately assessing it.

“Kalos is nice. I miss it sometimes. Have you ever been?”

She kept her eyes on the place ahead of her feet, still leading far off whatever dirt path they’d been on. The rocks smoothed, leveled off from what was visible, and faded into the ocean below.

Eliora crouched and placed her hands behind her to lower down off a last slick ledge, first placing her found object there and then retrieving it from the bottom when she'd made it safely.

“Careful here too. Slippery.”

equipment clangs against his shoulder, swaying before a shrug stabilizes them. he narrows his eyes, looking ahead.

“Oh, Ambrette Aquarium is beautiful. I have to go every time I visit.”

Once they were settled, Eliora went to place her small glass treasure off to the side, positioning some rocks so she’d know where she left it.

“This is it.” she echoed affirmatively. “The drop off is close.”

Her bag was slid off her shoulder and set on the ground with a light thud. She then went to work snapping and securing equipment. While doing so, she looked over. “You’ve done this before, right?”

It hadn’t occurred to Eliora that she’d be teaching Theo today. She’d been under the impression that the man merely needed an escort to interesting locations.

“I guess we’ll fix that.”

A smile went up to him warmly, and she approached to help him make sense of all of the various equipment.

Theo was very stony-seeming at times—perhaps even stoic. She glimpsed his awakening smile while helping, and it tickled her own. Seeing such purity in people gave her joy.

Hands drew back away and she shook her head. “No, that’s okay. I can manage.”

Eliora made fairly quick work with the remainder of her gear. Once she was ready, eyes went over to find him again, witnessing the look on his face and returning it with ease. To watch the stone give to his excitability delighted her. It was almost childlike.

“Ready?”

She nodded, beaming. Turned, chirping on their way in: “Try to watch your step… we should always disturb as little as possible.” Perhaps difficult with long flippers.

As they approached deeper water, Eliora waded into topics like how to use the regulator, and safety regarding atmospheric pressure.

“It’s important to go slow.” She explained.

Eventually, goggles were fitted on, and it was time to go swimming.

he's inexperienced, she's experienced, so it's only natural for him to follow her lead. he listens intently to her explanations, finding comfort in the way she seems to not mind guiding him through the most basic of things.

nodding, he slips his goggles on, sinking deeper into the water, then starts swimming.

it's slow at first; he uses the time to get acquainted with his surroundings, to how he feels so light and vulnerable in the water. to not have control should scare him. but for this, for fishies, he's able to compromise.

so they continue on deeper.
