Under the unrelenting heat of Slateport Beach, a redhead felt the echos of his childhood home.

In the moment he was now as he was back then; energized and famished for competition.

All fired up. There was no better way to articulate it.

The hazy fog that seemed to have settled over him the last three months was dissipating; Sénon was awake again.

He'd let the better part of two months slip away but the summer wasn't done, so he had lost time to make up for.

As he waited just outside his circle he could make out the shape of someone walking directly toward him. His fingers grazed his eight pokéballs as he mumbled to himself.

"Show me my opponent."

Perhaps it was foolish, to participate in such a public event like this. Especially in her condition, with her eyesight still in dire straits and her body still weak in any stiff breeze.

But this was an opportunity to address her strengths and weaknesses and to push herself. Perhaps it was also, too, an attempt to prove her worth. To prove to herself that she hadn't been beaten.[break][break]

And the weather was nice, warming her skin. [break][break]

Emma breathes in, chin tilting down to the man's fingers brushing his belt. Although she cannot truly see, she isn't stupid. The woman glances back up to his face, eerily accurate in her stare.[break][break]

Back in his day, Kanto operated on a strict six slotted belt policy. It wasn't illegal to carry more pokéballs than your belt allowed but it was considered in highly poor taste among serious trainers which late-teenage Sénon very much regarded himself as.

Here in Hoenn; no belt limitations. The Kantonian found it liberating.

Still, it was nice to see some people still vied for the old ways. "A ranger's always prepared." He smirked.

He didn't know who he was up against so he didn't let his subtle boasting go any further than that.

She looked a little worn for ware even if he found her face to be easily modelesque.

She was pale, and seemed to lack for energy. Still it was her pokémon who would be doing the heavy lifting so her seemingly compromised state was none of his business and no reason to hold back on her.

A ranger, was he? One of those righteous Pokemon activists that baffled her. They, too, used Pokemon like tools, but they boasted companionship and trust. She scoffs, unimpressed and more than a little tickled at his arrogance. If she could see him, she's almost certain he's posturing.[break][break]

"Let's see, then."[break][break]

With a gentle toss, Emma releases a Pokemon. The white glow fades away to reveal a golden-furred Luxray. It flexes its claw into the ground, nails biting sand, tail lashing from side to side in anticipation.

One of the younger lot needing the most attention and development he called Terawr from his pokéball.

The dino-tot looked as ready as ever for a battle. Rather than cower to the illustrious charisma and menace of the Luxray, the Tyrunt size it up for food.

Or at the very least, victory. "Terawr, ICE FANG!"
Bearing down on the Luxray with teeth fit to frostbite the Tyrunt was fearless and for good reason. The dino was half its height but two-thirds its weight.

Meaning it was sturdy enough to bring the Luxray down to size by biting away at its legs until it had none left.

Terawr used Ice Fang!

Luxray glowers, staring down his tiny, toothy opponent with an unsettling stare, INTIMIDATING the creature to some extent. However, even with that factoring in, the little dino-tot charges.[break][break]

He is all teeth, all confidence, all strength. Luxray doesn't have the time to move or react, too impressed or too stubborn to step aside and let the little creature barrel past him. Or perhaps he's simply too slow.[break][break]

Regardless, ice-cold fangs sink into fur and skin, piercing flesh. It leaves behind a hot and cold sensation, ice forming on his dark fur. Instinctively, the Pokemon reacts to pull away, severing the connection. Ice sprinkles off of him and he bounces back, performing a MAGNET RISE that lifts his paws off the ground.[break][break]

Try to chase a target you can't reach, tiny dinosaur man.

Unlike most of the ranger's other younglings Terawr had been raised from fossil restoration with his moveset already charted. He was now capable as he would ever be.

He only needed the battle blessings time could offer; experience, empathy, restraint.

As the Luxray magnet rose looking majestic as all hell, Terawr was less happy about it than Sénon himself. He'd never fought something that could be off the ground. (What sorcery was this?!)

It was madness on baby brain from a species that wasn't known for its intelligence to begin with.

Experience, empathy, restraint; Terawr had none of them.

In his anger he did what he did best. Even looking down at his blue 'stompers' all he could see was red.

He let out a wailing of a roar from the Luxray's liftoff and chased him down crushing the sands of the beach so hard the grains exploded upwards and their section of the beach rocked with mini-tremors from every step.

Terawr used STOMPING TANTRUM!

It wasn't even worth wasting his breath to now that the 'runt was a rampage. Sénon could only wait for the next moment to attack, trying to find the eternal patience he would need to be father.

"Ugh.. Kids."

This Luxray was similar. A beast ripped from the belly of the black market. Everything it knew, it had come with. Emma had learned almost everything she needed to know from it, as well as pried the tracker out of its shoulder. [break][break]

Emma tucks her chin, listening intently at the Tyrunt's tantrum. The ground shakes, rumbling with every impact of his heels. But Luxray is unaffected, hovering above the air, distended by electricity beneath each paw. His nails are hooked, his spine rigid. He is a machine bred for war, reduced to dealing with a squawling child.[break][break]

"Hm.."[break][break]

Is Emma's only response for the man's attempt at humor. Was it humor? Or an observation?[break][break]

Electricity explodes from the Luxray's chest and tail, a ball of yellow light that extends from his center, pouring outward. It never touches the ground, but it does surge for the Tyrunt.[break][break]

When his tantrum subsided Terawr finally turned back to Sénon for guidance.

Feeling the outstanding desire to teach the prehistoric pup a lesson, Sénon turned his gaze from the tyrunt. Forcing it battle by its own wits.

Of course thinking wouldn't lead most tyrunt to victory and terawr was just barely smart enough to rely on his instincts. Instinctual processing told him stomping about again wouldn't work.

Digging his meaty thighs and feet into the sand the runt cleared a vertical leap to take it above the Luxray and fall down right atop it. Its spiky head protrusion being used as a ramming horn, with a little help from gravity.

Terawr used Horn Drill!

Babies are unpredictable, as Luxray would come to find out. Even with his paws off the ground and lightning at his fingertips, even with the power of a demi-god coursing through his veins (or so he felt like), he could not anticipate the wild and erratic nature of the child.[break][break]

He falters, unsure where to pivot, and he feels the little tyke crash into him. It's a one-tap and he's out, pulled to the ground, unconscious. Emma tilts her chin up, brows furrowed.

HORN DRILL was a strategic last resort. A great neutralizer that defied type disadvantages, ultimate defenses and even ridiculous experience gaps.

A deadly move that less than ten evolutionary lines of pokémon were capable of learning, (according to his most recent cross referencing of DEXapp). Aside from being largely obscure it was also largely inaccurate.

Yet... three out of ten times. It was a hit.

The tyrunt came down with all his body weight crushing the Luxray down into the sands with a sand-quaking boom.

With a clawed foot on the Luxray's shoulder the Tyrunt perched over its opponent roaring in a high-pitch.

Luxray does not get back up, not even when hooked claws dig into his shoulder. Emma returns the fallen brute before the dinosaur could accidentally reopen the wound in his shoulder. [break][break]

"Efficient battling. I can appreciate that."[break][break]

However, given her lack of Pokemon to follow up with at present- the rest of her Pokemon were likely stored elsewhere on the beach- Emma begins to make her exit. She does not move quickly, however, and seems to be heading for the tally board nearby to mark down her loss and his win. [break][break]

In other words, he was welcome to follow her.

It wasn't the purest triumph of skill nor strength.

By and large the match was determined by luck. If the other trainer was any kind of battle maniac, they would surely have a rematch at some point.

Not that even that would be possible if he let her go without getting her name.

Following her along he signed off on the battle results for the sake of updating the ledger. "Don't give me too much credit. It was basically my unruly kid throwing a tantrum." He crossed his arms. "-and then still getting his way by the end of it all."

At that moment he made it his point to push the little brat to his limits before he could rest again.

As for his battle partner, he couldn't say he was ready for her to make her leave. He found intrigue in her temperament.

She was as chilled as he was smoldering. His instincts pushed him to pursue study of such a dynamic.

Emma slows down only because she can hear him in pursuit. She catches the brief scrawl of pen against paper, hurried, before he moves to catch up. His voice carries over her shoulder and she tilts her cheek subtly to catch it.[break][break]

"Perhaps he needs a stricter hand."[break][break]

It is a very poor attempt at humor, but an attempt nonetheless. This man's interest in her is simultaneously welcome and unwelcome, and she comes to a halt to turn back and face him. Evidently, he wants to keep talking to her, and she is really not in any hurry to go anywhere.

She was right about that. He couldn't refute her in the least. "That's exactly what he's going to get."

Terawr was special. Sénon intended to make him a champion Hoenn would never forget.

But as he watched the tyrunt eat sand and stomp about the shallow waves he understood the tyke would need the steadiest of hands and discipline in excess.

When it came to battles the inclination he got was that she seemed to have it all together.

Yet... "What about you?" He put his arms behind his back at-the-wrist in poise. "Whose providing the 'strict hand' you need?"
