Cardamom took a few deep breaths as she leaned back on the inflatable platform she'd been provided with. She was wearing her usual orange-and-yellow swimsuit, though she'd added a pink ribbon around her waist to match with the Gorebyss swimming around below her. This was supposed to be a fully underwater match, and she'd signed up for it with the one swimming Pokemon she had. After a bit, the Gorebyss poked her head out of the water, letting out a soft "Gor?" Cardamom shrugged.[break][break]
"I'm not sure why our opponent seems to be late," she admitted. "But no, we can't just claim a victory by getting them disqualified." The serpentine Pokemon nodded, diving back down into the water to continue circling, checking out the underwater environment and seeing how she could use it to her advantage.

If there was one thing he—absolutely detested; it was the deep blue.

For one thing, he hated the ocean.

Seasickness usually is never far behind for him whenever he steps onboard a boat.

However—to his utter chagrin and consternation, one of the battle formats for the tournament involved fighting—underwater.

Well, with some clarification he realized that it would just be the Pokémon and not them swimming. Hopefully.

Plus he’d gotten lost, and almost got himself disqualified!

“Gah, s-sorry!” he shouted as he limped into view, still leaning on the crutch. “Kinda hard looking for some of these arenas. Are you my opponent for today?”

Trailing right behind him was a Swampert who looked utterly exasperated.

"Yup, that's me!" called Cardamom, waving cheerfully. "I'm just glad you're finally here, Plasha was getting impatient." The Gorebyss let out a light huff at being called out like that, before poking her head out of the water and hissing a challenge at the large Swampert approaching them.[break][break]
"So, that guy's your choice for this fight?" she asked, gesturing at the Swampert.

The Swampert trailing behind him gave a wave at the young individual in front of them, before taking a running start and jumping into the arena with a loud splash.

“Yep, that’s him alright. Just as overeager as a big kid,” he chuckled as he was splashed on by the cannonball his Swampert launched.

Now that both challengers were there, the whistle signifying the start of the match finally went off.

“You can have first move!” he called out, finally getting the chance to sit down and get some relief.

Hobbling around was tiring!

"He looks pretty tough," noted Cardamom. "Start with a Coil!" The Gorebyss responded with simple action, circling herself into a tight-looking spring as she watched the Swampert approach, keeping much less of herself exposed to whatever move it might make next. Although the look on her face said that she couldn't wait to start actually getting physical, as it were.

Time to see what Shuyin was capable of.

While rough around the edges, he was still in the middle of training him, so there was bound to be room for error here and there.

As he was about to make the Swampert start off with a Mud Shot to obscure the pink ichthyoid Pokémon’s vision, the dual-type had other ideas.

“Shu, don’t you dare—” he started before the Swampert momentarily disappeared to swim underwater, before surfacing again sometime later and then proceeding to Throw a Rock at the Gorebyss!

Oy.

Swampert used Rock Throw!

Both Cardamom and Plasha blinked at the hurled rock. Neither of them had been expecting something like that. Plasha even let out an offended whistle that made Cardamom chuckle despite herself. "Alright, then," she said. "Let's give him something big! Whirlpool!" Water started gathering from around the tank, swirling slowly as it collected around the Swampert, trapping him in the middle. Perhaps as a little bit of revenge, a few tiny pebbles caught in the whirlpool then started plinking off his own hide.

This left Alexei smacking his left palm to his face before dragging it down.

Yeah, about that…

“Shu, what did I tell you about—” he began again, only for the Swampert to cackle—for all of five seconds before the water around his area started spinning around.

And then that’s when he got the exact same idea and decided to throw a Whirlpool of water as well at the Gorebyss!

Hit one with a Whirlpool? Do the same thing!

Swampert gets swept into the vortex, and just to be petty-af ALSO used Whirlpool!

endeavor completed: use a not-very effective move on an opponent!

Plasha let out another offended whistle as her own move was turned back on her, leaving both of the Pokemon stuck in swirling waters. Angrily hissing, she started swimming closer anyways, the two whirlpools beginning to touch each other and merge slightly. "Hey Plasha, be care-" called Cardamom, only to be ignored as Plasha acted on her own anyways. Snorting, she drew back and fired a Water Pulse right towards the Swampert's face.[break][break]

Though considering they were both already underwater, it was kind of hard to see.

The sight of the two Whirlpool attacks merging together—at least on the surface—had him looking down, rather concerned.

“Sorry!” he called out to the other. “Shuyin’s such a jackass…” he apologized with an embarrassed chuckle as he could pick out the two swimming Pokémon being drawn closer due to the combining vortexes of water.

Beneath the surface, the Swampert was inadvertently drawn closer to the Gorebyss, who was smacked around by the Water Pulse before deciding to use Take Down, risking an underwater tackle on the other Water-type in the process.

Swampert takes the Water Pulse in the face and is being stubborn-af, however attempted to use Take Down on the Gorebyss once he was swept closer to the other!

endeavor completed: sustain recoil damage!

Plasha snorted haughtily as the Swampert charged towards her, and suddenly a shimmering Barrier appeared between them, diverting most of the damage, though the vibration of the strike still seemed to shake her up a bit. Meanwhile, the twin Whirlpools continued to swirl-or was it a single Whirlpool now?

“You could say that, yeah,” he replied, watching as—oh boy. Both the vortexes has combined and were now a singular Whirlpool from where the two were now battling.

Not that the Swampert minded though—although he crashed into something, he was at least able to land a hit on the Gorebyss before backing away—and then spitting out a Mud Shot in the process!

Oh, things were going to get muddy now…

Swampert hits the Barrier before backing away and then throwing a Mud Shot attack!

The Mud Shot somehow managed to hold together underwater before splattering over Plasha's scales, making her pause to shake herself off before returning her attention to the battle. "Keep it at Water Pulse for now!" called Cardamom. The Gorebyss seemed content to listen this time, sending another burst of watery rings towards the Swampert.

Now the water was getting mucky due to the mud mixing in.

“Shu, don’t be a jackass and do things your way—” he said as the Swampert floated up for a few moments before he took the chance to Throw another Rock at the Gorebyss!

At the same time, the Swampert shook off the Water Pulse—even if it did land on him, it still bothered him.

Honestly, hitting water with water was a bad idea so he decided to stick to the other moves he knew that were not Water-type.

Swampert gets hit and takes the Water Pulse, before using Rock Throw once more!
