after managing to hunt down a booth selling lemonade, prince had decided it was time for a brief break from walking at the very least. but it seemed they weren't going to have much luck, because the line was already backed up and they were miserable. it felt like they hadn't had anything to drink in hours- maybe it had been hours- and they were debating asking how long they had been there.

Doug peered behind himself, tipping back his glasses as he came upon an incredibly pretty person with an incredibly fake smile.

Must've been terribly parched.

"'Bout 6 minutes." The youth replied promptly, just in time for his turn to arrive, the stall attendant calling out to him.

Slipping his finger under his vinnie to tug it off his ear, grinning at prince garrido.

"Want me to order one for ya?" Since they looked ready to murder and all, might as well help out before they acted on the impulse.

John Sullivan turned to look at prince, and his first thought was wondering why the fuck he was having to deal with a kid— like doug was much younger than he was. his second thought was to wonder if there was any way to skip him in line; or just the whole line in general. because, yes, he was debating murder if he didn’t get something to drink right now. much to his fortune, he managed to hold back a grumble of pure irritation at the younger man’a answer, but the look on his face probably did enough to express it, fake smile totally forgotten.

”yes. please.” and maybe, just maybe, a touch of an overly dramatic, ‘i will literally die if i don’t get something to drink’ tone entered his voice at his answer, but he’s already offering doug his money before too much can come of it. ”just a regular lemonade is fine.”

Experienced in the art of dealing with highly irritable folk, though Andy Blackadder was rarely so swift to become murderous, grasped the money and smiled at the other placatingly, before turning his attention to the person manning the stand.

He tried to be quick and efficient about it, and before (too) long, he was approaching prince garrido once again, regular lemonade in hand.

"'ere ya go." He said, handing it over at the other, taking a sip of his own lemonade as he got a good look at prince before making a guess. "Long day?"

Definitely.

"This tourney's more popular than I thought; so many international trainers... it's almost like they don't even care about everything else goin' in Hoenn." The youth said with a laugh, before tilting his head slightly at Prince. "Are yA 'ere for some battles too?"

to his credit, John Sullivan didn't take long in getting their lemonade, and they relaxed a little at the sight of him coming back with it in hand. "thank you." it's genuine enough, and they take a drink of their lemonade before answering doug with a little laugh of their own. "very. i'm not used to this heat at all." it's more than they had wanted to admit, and they really hoped the heat wasn't getting to their head already.

prince looked over the crowd with maybe a little disdain, wishing they could at least find somewhere cooler that didn't involve getting in the water. "yeah. it's almost sort of overwhelming, though." not really; prince didn't know what had led them to lie about that, especially considering it was something small, but they supposed it would make up for their earlier admission.

"Been living here for 4 years and I gotta say: Me neither." He said with a chuckle, before blinking at the question.

"Huh? Oh, I'm a gym leader." The youth dropped on the other bluntly, pointing casually at a bus passing by, which had a long spread of all 8 current gym leaders plastered over it. Among them, a single one had a scar just like the youth's own... though he was dressed in full military apparel.

"We're sorta required to be here, but I've been having fun." He said with a grin, shrugging his shoulders. "Met new people, had interesting battles, reconnected with folks I hadn't seen in a while."

prince shouldn't be surprised that the younger man has been here so long, but he is anyways. "how old are you?" the question escapes him before he can really think about it, and he takes another drink of his lemonade to try to ignore the embarrassment at how suddenly he had.

if prince hadn't been surprised at how long the younger man had been here, the fact that he was a gym leader would have done it. if it hadn't been for the bus, and the poster, he would have made a solid attempt to call his bluff. but he couldn't, not with the proof right in front of him.

"talking to people all day doesn't get tiring?" in a way, prince respected John Sullivan for being able to deal with it- he knew he wouldn't be able to.

"so you came here when you were thirteen?" this time, prince couldn't keep the surprise out of their voice. mostly because they doubted they would have left that young. of course, if there were other reasons, they weren't about to question them. it wasn't their business, after all, and they didn't want to even ask after he had been nice enough to order their lemonade.

Doug thought he understood where prince garrido was coming from now, a look that said 'ah, gotcha' crossing his face.

"Wasn't originally alone." He admitted, smile slipping as he turned his gaze to one of the many large screens in Slateport. "My parents and I had to move here after what happened to Kanto."

A subject that even now, Doug struggled with speaking of. Thankfully, with the introductions, they could put the topic behind them... hopefully.

"Oh, right! Pleasure to meet'cha, Prince! Name's Doug Sullivan!" He said with a smile, offering his hand to the other youth. "'round these here parts, most people know me as Captain Sullivan."

so John Sullivan hadn't come to hoenn on his own- there was a bit of relief at that fact, because damn a kid did not need to be in this mess while being all alone. but kanto- there was a sinking in his gut at the mention of the region. sure, prince himself hadn't been there for it, but it was still a group he was allied with.

one that, if things worked out, he didn't exactly plan on leaving any time soon. not unless something happened and it ended up being disbanded again.

prince was just as happy to let the topic slide- he didn't want to deal with that particular mix of emotions, and he was sure doug didn't want to linger on the subject any more than he had to. despite himself, he found one side of his mouth twitching upwards in a crooked grin, this one more genuine. "it's nice to meet you, too." there's a moment of hesitation as he debates making a joke about their names, but leaves it.

The topic is thankfully abandoned without issue and the two youths finish their introductions on a nice note.

Meeting yet another person is a pleasant enough break from all the rush of battling that has been Doug's past few days, but in the end, the excitable, eager battler in his gut eventually manages to worm its way up, the youth leaning back were they sit as he sets down his empty lemonade glass.

"Hey Prince, ya 'ere as an spectator, or a competitor?" He asked with a smile, raising his hand in the air before showing off some deft sleigh of hand, producing his gleaming, multicolored badge with a twist of his wrist.

"How's bout a battle? If ya win or impress me, ya get one o' these, no Queues or waiting lines needed!"

if John Sullivan is too upset about the mention of kanto, prince can't exactly pick up on it. sure, they're not exactly trying, but maybe there would have been something. but they're not about to push it, and instead focus on drinking the last of their lemonade and relaxing; and trying to tone out the dull rumble of the crowd around them.

it takes a moment for them to register doug's question, and even then they only do because of the glint of his multicolored badge. it's eye catching enough, and that alone is what makes prince decide they need it. "bit of both? i've been doing some battles, but probably not as much as other people." even as they say it, they're reaching for their sylveon's pokeball in an unspoken answer; of course they wanted a battle.

Doug grinned as he saw the other youth reach for their pokeball, leaping up to his feet.

The badge was substituted by a net ball a short moment later, safely stored for later as Doug jogged a few feet away before turning around to face prince garrido.

With a flick of his phone, THE LEAGUE APPROVED SILPH BATTLEFIELD SYSTEM came to life, a PokeBall symbol appearing between the two youths before spreading outwards into a full length circular battlefield, erecting a protective barrier around it as it finished.

"Let's go ahead and add another one to yer record, then!" The youth said, throwing out a PokeBall to reveal a Scizor onto the field, the pokemon swiftly jabbing in the air like a boxer as it stared at Prince.
